Book Description
This is the "bible" for new surfers! It covers everything from board design to board repair. From wetsuits to wax. From building your own to waves, wind and tides. There is so much info in this book that will help the new surfer understand his sport before he even gets wet. A "must" for beginning and intermediate surfers.
Customer Reviews:
Good information.......2006-01-29
I found the information good. Specifically I liked the review of design options for a surfboard and their relation to performace. It was what I was looking for.
Definitive source for technicals on surf board design.......2000-09-18
Outstanding book. I have read it several times over. Although it is a bit dated technology wise(materials), the dynamics and mechanics involved in the physics behind the sport have remianed unchanged. The author explains how different desings(template, tails, bottoms, rails, ect.) affect the boards performance characteristics. I really enjoy reading the book. In fact, it was my companion in arms when I shaped my own surfboard recently and applied all the lamination. The board came out perfect, and I attribute most of the sucess to this book.

C'est vraiment excellent! BEST language book!.......2007-05-16
Used in combination with the audio materials, this course promises so much more than the usual (colors, numbers, basic greetings, etc.), and places a strong emphasis on pronunciation and idioms. You finish with a useful knowlege of French--the kind people actually speak. Comprehension is difficult at first because the speakers talk at a normal pace without overemphasizing the words, but it is this technique that leaves one able to know what people are saying without having them slow down.
As for the method of delivery--it's fun! The textbook follows a narrative structure, specifically a story about Robert, an American student in France, and Mireille, a young and witty student at the famed Sorbonne in Paris. There is love, mystery, and lots of important cultural information on the way, as well as an underlying humor that made our class laugh quite often. I recommend it highly for use in a class, and if you are willing to dish out the cash, for independent study as well. It has everything you need to gain a firm grounding in French language, culture, and idioms.
Language Dunce - even have trouble with English.......2006-08-05
I went through the 52 PBS programs first, then went through them again making notes, then I bought the book.
This immersion method I believe is like a child learning their own language for the first time - you watch and over time figure out what people are saying - you do not begin taking courses for 5 years.
If I had, had to take a typical language course to learn my native English - I believe I would never have learned.
The book is the immersion method in writting [and also in French]. You can go back and forth between the book and the 52 programs and everything is in French. You pick a word here and a phrase there and then start putting a few togeather. You learn the situations also.
For a person like me who fails every language course - this has been fun. It makes me want to go through the chapters and tapes over and over again.
So if you think of this method as a way to pick up French as a child would - a word here and a phrase there and a spark to continue to learn - it can be a lot of fun.
So far I recommend the 52 PBS programs and this Book.
I don't believe the so-called "immersion" method.......2006-07-15
An adult needs all the help his mature abilities can bring, including the language he knows to mirror and bridge the language he is learning. The "French only" method seems to me almost idiotic. It didn't work for me and I know I am not alone. I love French and have kept my eyes on all the self-study French courses available in the States.
Besides, French may not change much but the video is around 20 year old.
NOT good for travel prep.......2006-05-09
After reading the reviews I thought I had found the perfect course to learn French before a trip. I had two months to study and am a motivated language learner. That being said this course was practically useless. This a course designed for college classroom study, not independent home study. Also if you need ANY explanation at all for grammar or pronunciation look elsewhere. I think the immersion method works well when coupled with some explanation. But this course gives no instruction on conjugating verbs, subject-noun agreement, etc. It just expects you to absorb this information. This would be fine if you had a year of college class and a teacher to guide you. If you are buying this to prepare for travel find a concise and cheaper guide to learning french.
Fun, structured, and a great beginning. Needs CD ROM.......2006-03-22
I now live in France and am fluent, and I can say French in Action helped me out on my path to learning French. First, the blond girl Mireille is quite pretty and a joy to watch (for males). The guy, Robert, is a little goofy. Anyway, the story is entertaining enough, with some nice scenes of Paris (especially Jardin Luxembourg) and with a grand finale of a visit of many of France's finest sites.
The text book, workbook, and video combination is excellent. As others have noted, it is one of the best self-learning guides available in any language. The workbook has the answers in the back. If you take this in conjunction with a course, so much the better.
However, this will not make you fluent by any means - at most it gets you up to intermediate. Enough for tourism at any rate, but not enough to prepare you for a life in France and working in French. But the books don't claim to do so.
It would be nice if there were CD-ROMs available (if there are, i haven't seen them). These CD ROMS could have games, quizes, etc.
Just one other thing - the book is GIGANTIC! At least when I had it; it was almost too big for my bag, and was the largest of my university books.

While the workbook is not crucial to the program, it helps practice written skills that might otherwise get neglected. It also goes well with certain audio activities and reinforces the material.

3 Short Stories.......2007-06-18
If you are looking for some easy reading, romance, marine rescue-type, then this book is for you. Not complicated. They move right along, steamy and well written. This book is large style, not small paperback. Can read it on the treadmill with no problems! LOL
Really Enjoyed It.......2006-09-28
I didn't think I would like this book. I'm not big on short stories but I enjoyed this author's book Naked Truth and this book is better. She does an excellent job of being the characters to life in minimum pages. The characters really clicked and you could feel their lives. I loved the Marine background. I would highly recommend this book to any romantic readers. Great beach book.
Oh, yeah!!.......2006-04-23
These three stories are so good, so hot! This book will go on my keeper shelf. Ms. Fetzer is a GEM! Fantastic - much more than a mere 5 stars!!
Are men really this hot?.......2006-02-17
This is the first book I've read by this author. I'm hooked. I plan to purchase anything she has written in the past or will write in the future. This book consist of three novellas. All three heroes are to die for hunks, that can't possibly exist in real life. They were too tough, too tender and just so yummy I wished they could have materialized. The sort of hero portrayed in this book is the reason I read romance. This one is definitely a keeper.
Action, adventure, sex & Marines - what more could you want?.......2005-03-30
I don't think I've ever given an anthology 5 stars but this one was just so much fun to read that I'm rounding up from 4 1/2! I had only ever associated Amy J Fetzer with Irish medievals and did not realize that she even wrote military contemporaries. Since I'd never read ANY of her books, I decided to start with this collection of three short stories to get a feel for her style and to see if I'd enjoy it. Well, I certainly did! She seems to know her stuff when it comes to the military and the three Gunnery Sergeants she has created here are really yummy heroes!
Hot Conflict is the story of DJ McAllister and longtime friend Mary Grace Heyward. They met as teens, DJ the bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks and Mary Grace, daughter of wealth and privilege. DJ has loved her for years but feels he's not good enough for her. Now she's been abducted while attending an event for her sister and her husband (the ambassador to Panama) and it's up to DJ and his team to save her. Will their time on the run through the Panamanian jungle reveal how they really feel about one another? 4 stars.
Hot Landing Zone has loner Jake Mackenzie and his team dropping into the lair of Al-Qaeda terrorist Kali in SE Asia to extract scientist Dr Katherine Collier who was abducted in Hong Kong and brought to this island to create a chemical weapon. Unfortunately, a major storm strikes during the rescue and Jake and Katherine are swept to a deserted island and must await rescue. During this forced time alone together she reveals the loneliness and isolation she has always felt being a child prodigy and now an "egghead" scientist who has difficulty relating to others. And Jake reveals his loneliness resulting from being orphaned as a child and never really belonging anywhere. Are they two kindred spirits who belong together? Oh, yeah! 4 1/2 stars.
My fave of the three was Hot Target - oh Rick!!!! I just really liked both Rick and Sam's characters! Rick Cahill and his team have their orders to extract Peace Corp volunteer Sam Previn from the Amazon. What Rick discovers when he arrives, is that Sam is actually a very pretty Samantha! But their chopper is fired on by drug lords/rebels/whatever (down there, take your pick!) forcing it to take off without Rick and Sam. And so they must trudge through the jungle to reach the alternate rendevous point. All the while becoming more and more attracted to each other. But Sam has a pretty big secret that she's keeping from Rick. Will it tear them apart once they return to the real world? 5 stars!
I really only read this to see if I'd like her style, as I've heard really good things about her most recent release OUT OF UNIFORM and thought about reading it. Well, with this fun collection, I've made up my mind that she's an author I'd like to read more from and I will definitely be ordering OOU.
Highly recommended if you love stories about men in uniform (and who doesn't)!

Book Description
It is 1987 and college professor Thomas Martindale is teaching a summer writing seminar at the university's marine center on the rugged Oregon coast. A marine biologist dies under bizarre circumstances and his assistant, Tom's former lover, is arrested for his murder. The death occurs during a conference of the International Whaling Commission at the center. In Martindale's mind, there are more likely suspects than his friend: the Japanese fisheries minister, an Eskimo whaling commissioner, and several radical environmentalists.
Soon Tom's investigation uncovers the murdered man's involvement in a graduate student's drowning at sea and his collaboration with the Japanese to alter whale population statistics. It also puts him in danger from unknown pursuers who keep following him in his car. At the same time, a large Gray whale has beached herself near his house, adding yet another twist to this perplexing mystery.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent read from an accomplished writer.......2003-09-11
Ron Lovell is presently on the Journalism staff at Oregon State University. His career has spanned several writing positions in New York, Houston, Denver, and Los Angeles. He has written thirteen textbooks, and Dead Whales Tell No Tales is the successor to his first Thomas Martindale mystery, Murder at Yaquina Head.
Thomas Martindale is co-teaching a seminar on whales with Susan Foster, a marine biologist and former lover; Randy Webb, a journalism colleague; and Howard Phelps, professor and world renowned expert on marine biology. Several special interest groups are among the student body, including a Japanese fisheries minister, and Eskimo whaling commissioner, and a fringe radical environmental group. Naturally, the atmosphere is tense with whaling interests verses environmentalists, and it is not surprising that the Susan Foster's indubitably accurate report on the whale population is discredited and a new report more in tune with whaling interests is substituted. But when Howard Phelps is found murdered in the mouth of a beached whale, the plot thickens, as they say:
"Susan Foster. I have a warrant for your arrest for the murder of Howard Phelps. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You have the right to talk to a lawyer and have him present while you are being questioned. If you cannot afford a lawyer..."
Marine biology is just another area that is begging for a great mystery to be written. The plight of the whales is an International concern, and Lovell does a thorough job of outlining the forces locked in battle and the reasons for the fight. He spins a straightforward tale full of interesting side trails, such as the lure of big money to professors who are supposed to be our leading minds, but who all too often succumb to the temptation of money and [physical activity] to undermine their position in our society. His characters are bigger than life, and his description of the Oregon coastline is simply stunning. Dead Whales contains a first-rate plot that snags the reader from the first page and doesn't let go until the final denouement. Thomas Martindale is an entertaining hero who exacts his revenge on his former love who has done him wrong just as he rescues her from certain doom. An excellent read from an accomplished writer.

A Real Pagae Turner.......2003-05-02
Dead Whales Tell No Tales is a great followup to Lovell's popular Murder at Yaquina Head! His protagonist, college professor and amateur sleuth, Thomas Martindale is a very real and "human" character who is driven in his desire to help those who he knows are in need.
Highly recommended! An easy read...lots of suspense and fun. Lovell keeps you guessing whodunit until the very end!

donovan adds wit and verve to rainbow fish.......2001-11-15
Gail Donovan has brought new wit and verve to the Rainbow Fish
series with this delightful book! My young son and I both
enjoyed the humor and drama of this undersea glimpse into a
'school' of fish and other sea creatures who reveal their
personalities-- familiar to anyone who's ever been to any
sort of school!-- through a wittily rendered session of
Show and Tell. Donovan's gentle humor and perfect ear for
both 'teacher-speak' and genuine kid voices make this book
one that can truly be enjoyed by both young readers and their
parents. I hope Donovan will continue to make Rainbow Fish
shine!

Book Description
The extraordinary life of Captain Charles N. Bamforth spanned most of the twentieth century, beginning with his childhood at the turn of the century and continuing through his retirement and death during the Cold War era. During his sixty years at sea, Captain Bamforth experienced the Depression, two World Wars, and a number of troublesome labor disputes. Through it all, he also had to navigate loneliness, confusion, and marriage to both his family and the sea. His story is told in meticulous detail and with refreshing honesty.
Captain Bamforth's handwritten diaries, logs, and personal letters all have been carefully compiled by his sons, Charles and Richard, and reveal as much about the hard-working, unassuming courage of the captain as they do about the turbulent times during which he lived.
Customer Reviews:
A Giant Imprint of the 19th Century.......2003-08-19
"Iron Jay" is classic American stuff; a great reading experience and absolutely absorbing from a social/historical perspective. Truly a working man's autobiography, the story sustains a tension that makes it intriguingly essential reading. Captain Bamforth's spirit is extraordinary -- chaotic and poetically tender in one quick flash. At one point you're in love with the man, idealist and poet; the next moment he looms up at you in patriarchal horror.
Iron Jaws.......2003-08-12
I wish everyone would get their own copy. I gave up waiting for those who borrowed mine to part with it so I bought a second copy that I will NOT loan out. It is a must for my library of favorites.
Suzanne Seller
A Rewarding Read.......2002-10-02
As the Skipper's granddaughter, I dutifully picked up this book... and then found myself turning pages late into the night!
Throughout the book, Captain Bamforth's voice comes through as authentically human and intensely engaged in the world around him, revealing an honest naivete, an unflappable work ethic, a remarkable sense of satisfaction in the rich details of his travels, and the challenges that his chosen life at sea imposed on his family and home life.
Some have said that my grandfather's stories are the stuff of legend. Keeping his crew alive for six days after his ship was torpedoed in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean certainly falls in that category. At the same time, I think what's fascinating is the day-to-day perseverance of a very ordinary man, grappling with and embracing his understanding of right and wrong, of loyalty and betrayal, of life and peril in the 20th century. It is this testament of a hard-working man that, through its sincerity, becomes extraordinary and perhaps legendary.
Iron Jaw: A Skipper Tells His Story.......2002-09-02
An enjoyable and informative book. The narrative gives insight into the many aspects of being a sea captain far beyond the mere steering of a ship.
