Book Description
The theoretical background of cytogenetics as well as the practical methods to investigate chromosomes from Drosophila to mammals and humans are presented in this book. Theory and practical protocols on the following topics are included: Cell culture methods, chromosome preparation and banding techniques, radioactive and fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) methods and their derivates (chromosome painting), meiotic chromosome methods using light and electronic microscopy, the polytenic (Drosophila) and lampbrush (urodeles) chromosomes as well as flow and slit scan cytometry. The editors, all at INRA, played a prominent part in the development of cytogenetics. Paul Popescu, a specialist for domestic animals worked with gene mapping, Helene Hayes, together with Popescu showed the homology of bovine and human chromosome disorders, and Bernard Dutrilaux focused on human cytogenetics.

Book Description
In addition to the traditional cytogenetics still used as the basic methodology for everyday clinical diagnosis, new molecular cytogenetic techniques provide a useful basis for routine diagnosis. Flourescence in situ hybridization (FISH) has become a standard technique, and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), spectral karyotyping (SKY), and multi-color FISH have shown their potential for diagnostic purposes. Following a section on tissue culture, chromosome staining and basic information about karyotyping, nomenclature and quality standards, protocols of relevance for comprehensive cytogenetic diagnostics are presented.

Book Description
Human Cytogenetics: Constitutional Analysis covers all basic aspects of human cytogenetic study other than malignancies and abnormalities. They are covered in a separate volume. Since the publication of the 2nd edition in 1992, there have been major advances in technology and the emphasis of this new edition is on the spectrum of technologies available to conventional and molecular cytogenetics. Perhaps the largest new development has been the transition of fluorescence in situ hybridization to an essential tool for all cytogenetecists and consequently its use in chromosome analysis is covered in detail. Another important new technology to be described in detail is computerised image analysis. The conventional techniques have not been forgotten, with chapters on chromosome staining and banding techniques and meiotic studies. New authors have been brought in to take a fresh look at lymphocyte culture and prenatal diagnosis. As before, there is an introduction to human chromosomes, their analyses, and the application of cytogenetic investigations to clinical practice. There is also an appendix on health and safety concerns in the cytogenetics laboratory. This book will be invaluable to any scientists using basic cytogenetics and along with its sister volume Human Cytogenetics: Malignancy and Acquired Abnormalities will be an essential purchase for any cytogenetics laboratory. The volumes are available individually or as a set.

Book Description
Leading scientists in cell biology, genetics, cell culturing, and gene transfer present their most productive methods for the preparation, characterization, and use of artificial chromosomes. The authors cover all relevant areas of artificial chromosome research-from basic genetics to daring attempts at building new gene therapy tools-and describe possible applications in genetic manipulation requiring large portions of the genome. Each fully tested protocol is described in step-by-step detail and includes a background introduction outlining the principle behind the technique, reagent and equipment lists, and tips on troubleshooting and how to avoid pitfalls.
Book Description
Written by a veteran firearms instructor, this book addresses the profound need for basic instruction in safe firearms use by the beginner—the new firearms owner, as well as the police cadet or correctional officer trainee in the academy—in dire need of instruction in how to safely handle and care for their new weapons; and not only to use them safely, but effectively, accurately and with good judgment and skill. With 45 years of experience, much of it in training others to use firearms, no one was better equipped for writing this book than the late George L. Tooley. His down-to-earth insistence on addressing the basics, his continual attention to safety, and his detailed explanations of the inner workings of firearms make this book unique in its field.
Customer Reviews:
Revolver pistol safety.......2002-05-24
If you have just purchased a revolver style of pistol, this is the book for you to learn all about its operation and safety. However, if you would like to learn all about your new semi-automatic pistol, this book does not discuss semi-automatic pistols...
It's about time a book like this was written..........2000-03-04
Written by a veteran firearms instructor, my best friend, the late George Lane Tooley, this book addresses the profound need for basic instruction in safe firearms use by the beginner-the new firearms owner, as well as the police cadet or correctional officer trainee in the academy-in dire need of instruction in how to safely handle and care for their new weapons; and not only to use them safely, but effectively, accurately and with good judgment and skill. With 45 years of experience, much of it in training others to use firearms, no one was better equipped for writing this book than George. His down-to-earth insistence on addressing the basics, his continual attention to safety, and his detailed explanations of the inner workings of firearms make this book unique in its field.
George Tooley was killed in a traffic accident in 1995, and he left this book behind, finished except for the drawings and photos, which I completed. All proceeds from the book will go to his widow, Darleen.
But, don't think of your purchase of the book is an act of charity. Far from it! This is, without a doubt, the best book of its type that I have ever seen. I've used firearms all my life, shooting everything from BB guns to machine guns, and I've read about everything there is on the subject. This is the best.
The rest of them can blow about how to quick-draw, and talk about all the bad guys they've shot, and how it felt. George gives you tips on how to shoot accurately. He tells you what to do, and what not to do with firearms.
For $8.95, it's the bargain of the century. Don't pass it up.
Joe Pierre
Customer Reviews:
a handy tool for students.......2004-08-21
I am a student in high school, and I have found this book to be quite handy in increasing one's vocabulary, especially for standardized tests such as the SAT. The words, in alphabetical order, are typed in big font with the prounciation key, part of speech, definition, and sample sentence below the word. There are quite a few words in this book (1,200) from a-z, so this should satiate the vocab-hungry.
What I like in this book are the simple, concise definitions of the words and following it, a slight elaboration on the definition. As I flipped through the book, I realized these words make good "word of the day" if one likes that kind of thing. However, I must note that some the definitions are a little too concise (too brief), so I often have to rely on the example/elaboration and/or consult a real dictionary source for clarification.
The word difficulty range is nice, from somewhat simple words like "affect" and "effect" (do you know the difference?) from words that seem, to me, even archaic at times and not exactly words one would use in a conversation: "My boss is such a troglodyte!"
Anyway, I recommend this book for students who want to build their vocabulary or other vocab-hungry people. However, if one wants extreme detail, one might have to consult an additional source. I "prognosticate" that, if put to good use, this book can make one use complex words with great "aplomb!"
Aptly Named.......2003-07-10
This book is an excellent reference for me. The words in the book are words I would not think twice about if I heard them in conversation or read them in a novel. I know what they mean...kind of. By reading this book, however, I am able to learn a precise definition of the words so I may feel comfortable integrating them into my own vocabulary. This is exactly what I was looking for.
The definitions are not your typical dictionary definitions that leave you more confused after you've read it. They are simple and concise. Each word has a clear example that shows the word in context.
I also enjoyed that pronunciation was shown phonetically. I appreciated not having to flip back to a key somewhere in the book to figure out how to pronounce each syllable.
Overall, this book is excellent for anyone wishing to expand their vocabulary.
Good vocubulary list, poor editing.......2000-09-04
This book contains, as the title suggests, a good list of vocabulary words that you should know. However, the editing in the book is atrocious. There are many typographical errors and probably a dozen words that omit a second definition that is widely used. The book will help you to recognize words that you should know, just be careful before you use these new words yourself since you may be using a definition that is not widely accepted.
To its credit, this book does present the words in a manner that will help you to learn them quickly. It is also easy to read and if you can dedicate as little as 30 minutes at a time studying from it, it should expand your mind and ossify your loins ;^)
A Very Useful Book.......2000-03-01
This book is excellent in providing the meaning and use of words that most people may not use in their everyday conversations. However, for those who wish to improve in their understanding of such words and who want to have greater understanding of the words used by educated persons, this is a useful book.
Excellent book for those interested in the use of words........1999-03-21
This is a fine book for those who want to improve themselves in the use of words. It contains 1200 words that educated people should use and gives examples of how to use them. I recommend this book also to those wishing to improve their vocabulary. It is especially useful for those preparing to take SAT, ACT and GRE exams.
Book Description
Gritty, scary, hilarious, heartbreaking, and wild . . . these remarkable true stories will take you on the roller coaster ride that is life as a Cleveland police officer. These are the real stories cops trade with each other after the shift, over a couple of beers. They're stories the rest of us rarely get to hear, because cops are often reluctant to open their world to outsiders. But writer John H. Tidyman got the officers talking, one-on-one, and now he shares their compelling personal tales with the rest of us. Listen in as dozens of copsactive and retired, young and old, from rookie to chieftell about their most memorable moments patrolling the streets of Cleveland. The biggest arrests, the dumbest criminals, the funniest practical jokes, the most frightening calls . . . Their stories will give you goose bumps on one page and make you laugh until you're gasping for breath on the next. Some hit like a punch in the gut, some will make you stop and wonder. On this ride you'll get a front-seat look at one of the toughest jobs in townand gain a better understanding of the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to do it. This collection is a real eye-opener, and great fun to read.
Foreword by Edward P. Kovacic, Chief of Police (retired), Cleveland Police Department.
Customer Reviews:
Jimspolice.......2004-12-21
I found this book very exciting and interesting. It is a book that I could hardly lay down, I had to keep reading it.
This book brought to my attention just how critical a Police Officer's job can be, and a job I feel very few could do.
I recommend this book for readers who like reading true stories that they can enjoy reading.
Good Cops...Tough Town.......2004-12-01
After a lot of bad press, this book may help remind folks they have some very good cops in Cleveland - courageous and solid.
One retired cop to all others - read this one!
Straight to the point, Honest, No holds barred........2004-11-14
As a retired Police Officer, I have read literally hundreds of Police Books. Cleveland Cops takes out the "sanitizing" usually done on Police stories and takes you inside the real world of law enforcement. This book is "in your face" from start to finish. The reader will get to ride in the police car and learn the realities of the job.
Chapter 8 "Some stories you never want to talk about" [ Kids in the crossfire] was a moving tribute to the officers involved. One story takes you to the scene as 2 officers respond to a domestic, only to arrive to a man holding a baby and shooting at them. Then having to feel the helplessness as this man pistol-whips the baby, throws a samauri sword at the officers having set fire to the house. He goes to the roof and jumps with the baby in his arms.
It doesn't get any more real than this book. Straight from the Cops who were there.
