For the past three decades the University of Nebraska football program has set the standard of excellence for successful conditioning. Complete Conditioning for Football presents the same program the Cornhuskers use to power their way to national championships.
Base, development, peak, and in-season training programs are provided for beginning, intermediate, and advanced players. The book includes 98 position-specific exercises that help players improve speed, agility, power, and endurance. Sample workouts are provided for offensive linemen, defensive linemen, linebackers, running backs, receivers, and defensive backs. Chapters also cover the key training principles of adaptation, specificity, overload, periodization, and proper rest and nutrition.
Fully illustrated, Complete Conditioning for Football takes the latest in strength and conditioning research and turns it into a detailed, practical approach that will help players gain the performance edge.

A Great Conditioning Book; A MUST Have For Football Atheletes!!!.......2006-06-18
I have looked a while for a great conditioning program for football players and when I found this book, I was amazed by the detail, quality, and effort obvoiusly put into it by the authors which made it a great conditioning book for High School football players and beyond. The authors incorporated not only the physical ways in which to get better but mental ways as well which are both important for conditioning as well as the successful winning of football games by not only being ready on the outside but also believing and knowing you can do it on the inside. The whole conditioning program is, when performed with the best potential and effort, a challenging one that will more than likely get you the preperation you need. These authors, coaches of the University of Nebraska football team which is famous for this strenghth and conditioning program, first introduce you to factors that build on one another to make a great football player and then give a very complete program of conditioning and training including a nutrition and shopping list for best atheletes to use for great energy. The structure of the book and organization is exceptional and it literaly gives you all the information you will ever need on how to prepare for football in any aspect. It contains specific exersises for speed, flexibility, strenghth, and more, and contains workout plans, inconclusive descripiton, and even helpful football tips in the process.
I would strongly recommend this book to any football athelete looking to prepare for football through conditioning at any level because of the very helpful information you will find in this book. I guarantee this book will never sit on your shelf too long if you get it because you will be refering to it constantly. I know I made the right choice by buying this book.
Simply the Best.......2005-05-27
The book "Complete Conditioning for Football" is a must for any football player. Inside includes performance needs; conditiong principles; testing, evluating, and goal setting; flexibility training; lifting techniques; speed drills; agility drills; nutrition and rest; and last but not least conditioning workouts and programs.
Performance Needs:
This chapter includes a performance pyramid which if followed can lead to "making the play", or success on the football field. It includes character, conditioning, ability, practice, game, and with the top brick, performance. Also it breaks down each of the components, exa. Character- belief, resolve, discipline, courage... and gives a descriptive explanation for each of them also.
Conditioning Principles:
This chapter guides you in developing and implementing a program to allow you to peak the four athletic indicators of speed, agility, power, and endurance. It breaks down and explains the principles of specificity, overload, and periodization.
Testing, Evaluating, and Goal Setting:
This chapter outlines step-by-step procedues on how to safely test and evaluate athletes' fitness and athletic abilities so ou can develop the objectives and specifics of your conditioning program. Here it gives some tests, such as vertical jump test, pro agility run test, 10- and 40- yard dash test, 300-yard shuttle run test, and even height, weight, and waist measurement tests. It also gives you percentile ranking charts of all the positions in high school and college. With your test results you can see where you rank among those in the 10-yard and 40-yard dashes, pro agility run, and the vertical jump. Percentile ranks are from 5-100.
Flexibility Training:
This chapter gives you the proper warm-up routine (high knees, heel ups, ect.), stretching routine (partner stretches), and mobility drills that should be done during the conditioning workouts (warm-ups and stretching before, mobility drills after the workout).
Lifting Techniques:
Provides valuable information on proper technique of all the lifts, to warming-up, spotters, breathing, and so on and so forth. Strength training exercises include: explosive, complementary, base strenght, and specialty. Not many weight rooms that I know of have the complementary, or "ground based jammer", so in the workouts in the back of the book give replacements for these lifts if the jammer is not available.
Speed Drills:
Included are 29 drills for speed (2), acceleration (9), plyometrics (9), and resisted speed (9). Also gives the proper sprint technique especially used for testing the 40.
Agility Drills:
Included are 58 drills for improving your agility. The drills include ropes (8), bags (15), backpedal drills (11), cones (12), line drills (6), and jump rope drills (6).
Nutrition and Rest:
Basically describes all the foods you should eat to make it short. This is a chapter you should allow as many people as possible to read, since without nutrition, athletic performance is low. Also gives a grocery shopping list with all the foods listed under the vitamins and minerals it has in them (example: almonds, corn oil, ect. are listed under vitamin e) and a section of drinking fluids and getting plenty of sleep.
Conditioning Workouts and Programs:
Guides you to building a successful conditioning program. Lists all the speed/agility drills and notes which drills are appropriate for which positions. Included are sample programs in development and peak phases for the positions. Also included in this chapter is the lifting programs for the beginner (base, development, in-season), intermediate (base, development, peak, in-season), and advanced (base, development, peak, in-season). This is an absolutely outstanding weight program in my opinion, with lifting days on monday, tuesday, thursday, and friday.
All in all, this is the complete book for any football player looking to get in great shape for the next season. It is mainly a year-round program by giving types of workouts (base, ect.) for each month of the year in which to apply the right workout to. I also recommend the book "52-Week Football Training" to combine the exercises in the books if you want a more varied program. I suggest taking the time to looking into "Jumping Into Plyometrics" for a plyometric program to add into your schedule and "Play Football the NFL Way" for techniques and tips to help you excell in the game of football.
this book helped me greatly.......2004-11-29
This is a great book because the program's strengths are based on what you want to do for football. If you want to get big and strong to play oline/dline then it has a stellar weight program. But if you are looking to develop speed and quickness it has a series of drills for that too. You just have to concentrate on the area that suits your needs the most. Excellent description of all the drills and excersies as well.
Informative Read..........2004-04-04
Gives a in-depth view on football specific training and is helpful in developing a custom program for yourself. All-in-all worth the read.
One of the best!.......2003-05-01
From the school that really started weight traininging in college football, Coach Arthur has done a great job of setting forward the principles that we should use in designing the programs that we use to build our athletes. You need this book.

An outstanding, comprehensive guide for youth soccer coaches.......1999-02-23
Having been both a player, coach and referee for many years, I found Dr. Brown's work to be a complete text on coaching youth soccer. This handbook takes the reader through the basics of developing a new soccer club, working with parents and the players and provides a comprehensive understanding the roles and responsibilities of the the coach, players and parents. Included are indepth descriptions (with diagrams and photographs) starting with basic soccer movements and going through complex team drills. If one had to pick only a single book on the game of soccer, this handbook would be it.

TWENTY QUESTIONS, one of the best selling introductory anthologies available today, presents a proven, well-acclaimed forum for introducing students to the rich variety of philosophical reflection. Animated by some of philosophy's more concrete questions-questions that students are likely to have pondered long before signing up for their first philosophy classes-TWENTY QUESTIONS fosters the creative exploration of many renowned classical and contemporary thinkers' responses to the very same questions.
Customer Reviews:
For Use in Some Intro to Philosophy Courses.......2006-11-04
I am a philosophy instructor, and I chose this book last summer in my first intro to philosophy course.
The selections are very short and ecclectic. To object to the book on this basis is rather disingenuous because one should know that about this book prior to selecting it. That is one of the main selling points of the book for others.
This book really worked for me and my students because I wanted to give them short tastes from a broad spectrum of philosophical topics and authors. Since philosophy includes such a diversity of topics, writing styles, and time periods, and because philosophy is not so much about reading the one true theory as about discussing many contrasting viewpoints, and because you never know what kind of philosophy each student will gravitate towards (some love Nietzsche, while others prefer Socrates), it is a nice thing to be able to expose a class to such a wide array of topics, time periods, and styles from which to begin their philosophical researches.
I required supplemental readings (available online) for those philosphers that we wanted to spend more time on.
If you are looking for a more in-depth approach to each philosopher then this is not your book! But if you want a broad spectrum of fun, short readings (an ADD approach to beginning philosophy), this can be a wonderful and enjoyable first experience of the subject.
A distorted picture of philosophy.......2004-11-24
This is a terrible book. True, it's hard to go wrong with the likes of Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Wittgenstein, and the other great figures represented in this volume. But the editors manage it just the same.
One problem is the length of the selections. There is no way a reader can come to grips with, say, Marx's critique of capitalism or Russell's theory of sense-data after reading a two-page snippet wrenched from its context. Some of the selections are even shorter than this; at least one is only 80 words long. Often the reader is given a philosopher's position on a particular issue, but without getting the arguments for the position! The subtext seems to be that reasons don't matter -- which, it seems safe to say, is distinctly unphilosophical.
Another problem is the banality of many of the chapter headings. As the title indicates, the book is structured around twenty philosophical questions; each chapter gives the answers of various philosophers to a different question. Chapter 10 is called, "How Should I Feel About Abortion?" This one seems easy to answer -- presumably, everyone feels pretty badly about abortion, regardless of their position on the issue. The more important question, obviously, is how we should *think* about abortion. Chapter 4 is called, "Which Should I Believe: Darwin or Genesis?" This question assumes that there is no way to harmonize Darwin's claims with those found in Genesis. It also assumes that, if they can't be harmonized, there are only two possible positions on this issue. Anyone with a passing acquiantance with the literature on creation and evolution knows just how naive these assumptions are.
Finally, the book's selections reflect a palpable bias toward the extreme left of the political spectrum. For instance, in the chapter on creation and evolution, Duane Gish, an ignoramus, is pitted against Philip Kitcher, a leading philosopher of science. The fight might be fairer had the editors chosen J.P. Moreland, Alvin Plantinga, William Lane Craig, William Dembski, or any of a number of other leading critics of naturalistic evolution, rather than a minor figure from the fundamentalist lecture circuit. Another question asks, "Does Religion Give My Life Meaning?" Apparently the answer is NO, since, with the exception of a couple watery selections on Buddhism, all of the other selections in this chapter come from opponents of traditional religion. There is also an emphasis placed on irrationalist views of science, linguistic determinism, and other liberal themes. The editors are entitled to their opinions, of course, but anyone interested in an objective and fair-minded introduction to philosophy should look elsewhere.
Create a quantum leap in your philosophical fluency.......2004-07-01
I recommend this book for the same reasons that others have criticized it. The book is brief, clearly organized, amazingly deep, and covering a wide breadth of common sense questions.
Some members of the philosophical community are not comfortable with this. Some conservative members of the old guard are less interested in creating philosophy so much as studying philosophy that already exists. For them the study of philosophy is an ends in and of itself, whereas it should be a means to the greater end of developing your own philosophical opinions. Actually, philosophical opinions are only useful insofar as they provide a person with a framework to clearly and logically decide what they think about real issues in the world and their life.
This book is all about Applied Philosophy, a phrase I coin to describe the divorce of philosophy from the non-creative, non-applicable academic study that actually discourages people from developing their own opinions. Like Applied Physics it recognizes that the study of philosophy does not necessarily have anything to do with the paramount goal of philosophy: having your very own sound, philosophically based opinions of the world.
After all, what is the value of Aristotle if not to provoke new thinking in people who read his work and had never thought of it before? Is Aristotle the person somehow better than any other man today? Is it that words, simply by virtue of Aristotle speaking them, become true, valuable and immutable? I would take a less theistic approach to the veneration of past philosophers. I would say they are useful and commit their ideas to print so as to provoke others to think like them. Where that provocation comes from, be it Wittgenstein, Napoleon, the Buddha twirling a flower, a schizophrenic's hallucinations, or MTv, what does it matter? The product is all the same: philosophical inspirations, leading to philosophical theory, leading to applied philosophy.
Some entrenched in the academic establishment of Philosophy have a vested interest in not seeing this broad of a philosophical education become the standard. Why? Because they are not themselves trained for independent thought. After all, what need would we have for conventional philosophy teachers if this were the case? Instead, they decry anything that is readable as `over-simple' and anything that presents philosophy in layman's terms as not serious work, because they suppose that everyone should have to go through what they did to approach philosophy, that it should be difficult and inaccessible, and that it can only come from taking their classes at their universities.
If you want a revolution in education and intelligence, abolishing ignorance, then the solution is to make education and philosophy something that is easy to approach. That is exactly what this book does. It creates a broad survey of philosophy that will familiarize anyone with the issues of philosophy with out an 8-year doctorate.
My favorite articles include Pinker, Kant, Kuhn, and Popper.
A great starting point for a journey through philosophy.......2001-11-11
This book is used as the primary text in my university's introductory Philosophy course, and I think it's an excellent choice. It includes classic texts written by well-known philosophers and the writings of scientists, novelists, religious figures and many others. The inclusion of philosophical writings from such unlikely sources is a great illustration of how philosophy is woven into all aspects of our lives. Reading this book will help you to realize how many philosophical issues you already deal with in your own life and will also help you to find new ways of thinking about and dealing with them.
Great introduction into philosophical thought.......2001-01-16
I ordered this book as a requirement from a great professor during college. Having only read just more than a handful of chapters in that semester I became hooked. I have since moved on and really started to appreciate the ultimate questions of life. Not that this book answers them. That is still the uniqueness of humanity, individual thought. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to be a better skeptic. We so readily just accept things that our ancestors accepted without a thought as to how reality really is. The wide array of topics is to be applauded and a great concept to take a look at may arenas of thought. Thank you professor Buenter(Binter).
Book Description
One of the most inspiring stories of the recent past was that of Brooke Ellison. The victim of an automobile accident that left her paralyzed from the neck down when she was eleven years old, Brooke never let her disability stop her from living her life to the fullest and becoming the first quadriplegic to graduate from Harvard University. But, as she eloquently reveals in this beautifully moving account of her life and accomplishments, her identity extends far beyond her physical limitations. Told with grace, warmth, and sparkling humour, The Brooke Ellison Story is not just about living with a disability, it is about overcoming adversity and celebrating the miracles that every day brings.

One Mother, One Daughter, One Journey.......2007-03-29
I believe this was a terrific book. It was filled with excitement when Brooke graduated form Harvard University. This book was one of those books where you always wanted to know what is going to happen next. I learned that even though you are paralyzed you can still be a straight A student. I do recommend that all people will love this wonderful non-fiction book because it describes a great biography about a 7th grade girl named Brooke and her mother Jean that led the way for her.
Inspiring story of hope and the strength of human spirit.......2005-03-11
Brooke Ellison's magnificent achievements, both because and in spite of her disability, can't help but inspire the reader. Her biography is both a tribute to her and to her loving family, especially her mother. I didn't find the story lacking because it didn't discuss her daily life and limitations in depth; I think perhaps she wanted to maintain SOME privacy in a life that of necessity has sacrificed so much of it, and the whole point of her story is that Brooke is not defined by her disability. I think the true tragedy of her accident was not that she was so severely changed, but that we were all so nearly robbed of a remarkable and gifted human being. I wish Brooke and her family well, and hope to see her on the speaking tour. Five stars for an inspiring story.
Inspiring An Unbelievable Mom.......2005-02-27
Brook Ellison really could be an inspiration to us all.Her positive outlook and her "go get em" attitude really is inspiring. That said, her mother Jean is a phenomenal women. I cannot imagine getting up everyday,7 days a week,24 hours a day at 4;00 am to bath, dress, feed, and groom another human being. Would I do it for my daughters? Of course, but it is easy to say that when you are not in the same situation. Let's face it,we have all griped about having to drop them at friends homes, going to pick them up at school when they are sick etc....This woman is one to definitely be admired. The other day I was on a message board reading all these nitwits gush on about a certain mobsters daughter and how much they admire her...WHY??? I posted about this book and this extraordinary woman, truly God blessed Brook with having Jean as a mom. I also think she was blessed by all the sacrifices her brother, sister and father made as well to make her dream come true. Brook's sister stated in an interview that the movie does not have their Grandmother in it and they should have, as she was the one who cared for the rest of the family when Brook and her mom were away. Jean is truly a modern day hero. God Bless the whole Ellison family.
The Brooke Ellison Story - a wonderful book!!.......2005-01-28
This biography/autobiography was amazing. It pulls you in right from the beginning and keeps you there. It is a sad book, but it has happy times and it can make you laugh and cry. The Brooke Ellison Story was very well written. Each chapter switches back and forth from the daughters' perspective, to the mothers' perspective. It was absolutely wonderful.
On Brooke Ellison's first day of seventh grade she was hit by a car on her way home from school and left paralyzed from her neck down, and relying on a respirator for her every breath. This story tells how she made it through, and 10 years later graduated from college.
Reading this book has opened my eyes to reality, and what happens almost every day to people around the world. Reading this book, on how she lived was astonishing. All the things Brooke accomplished even though she was paralyzed, was amazing.
"Try to imagine being in a chair with your feet bound and your hands tied behind your back. Then imagine being on a machine that gives you thirteen breaths per minute and doesn't allow you to sigh, or take a deep breath when you feel you need one. Then imagine never being able to use the bathroom or shower when you want to, to brush you teeth, feed yourself, scratch an itch, or wipe your eyes if you need to cry. Imagine never having any privacy, not being able to be physically intimate, or never being able to hug someone when you really want to. Compound that with sleepless nights when you are unable to breathe, equipment failures that threaten your life, and wheelchair malfunctions that leave you stranded in bed. Then put yourself in one of the most rigorous academic settings in the world and ask yourself to read thousands of pages of text without being able to turn the pages; attend lectures, seminars, and labs in all kinds of god-awful weather, study, prepare papers, take tests, and then do an original independent research thesis, submit it on time, and ultimately defend it. That will just start to scratch the surface of what it's like for Brooke." - Jean Ellison
I recommend this book to people who enjoy books that reach out to you and drag you in, only letting you go when you finally decide to close the book. Books that you say you're going to stop, but then you find you are ten pages later already. This books brings tears and laugher, and is wonderful.
inspiring but needed more depth.......2004-12-12
I like the reviewer "Martina" found the book inspiring yet also believed that it could have provided more depth to the
day to day experience of what it is to be a quadripalegic. Mrs. Ellison only gives the readers a glimpse of this experience when she talks about how Brooke has to be suctioned each day and turned to avoid bedsores. Maybe like "Martina" I'm gross for wanting to read about such information, but I as well like to take away new information and understanding from the subjects I read about. I would still recommend this book and the movie as both are inspiring and a true testament of how with great desire a person can achieve their dreams.
