Book Description

Now in its tenth decade of publication, Michigan Trees has been, since it was first introduced in 1913, the must-have reference book for anyone who wants to know about the trees of this unique North American region.
In this new and updated edition, several new species have been added to the lineup, as well as sections on tree ecology and fall color. Written and illustrated in a style that appeals at once to academic botanists and armchair arborphiles alike, Michigan Trees gives readers everything they need to know for identifying trees in the Great Lakes state. Included with each description are fascinating notes and asides (for example, this tidbit on the jack pine: "Parklike or savanna stands in north-central Michigan are prime habitat for the rare Kirtland's warbler that breeds nowhere else in the world."). Also includes a tree key and identification section illustrated with elegantly simple line drawings that reveal the tiny, signature details that make each tree unique.
Burton V. Barnes is Professor of Forestry at the University of Michigan. Formerly a research forester, he is best known for his research and publications in forest ecology and forest genetics.
Warren H. Wagner, Jr. was a world authority on ferns. He had been Professor Emeritus of Botany and Natural Resources at the University of Michigan before his death at the age of 80 in 2000.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Concise Guide to Trees.......2007-01-24

I have been identifying trees since childhood, and have found this book quite useful. It is applicable not only to Michigan, but also to surrounding states (I live in Illinois).

The front of the book includes a summary of basic leaf anatomy. It includes sketches of leaf shapes and leaf margins. There is also a diagram of oak leaves as related to their immediate environment of growth (swampy, etc.). A sketch of inflorescent types is also provided.

The remainder of the book is primarily a key to tree identification. Two pages are devoted to each tree. The left open page is a description of a particular kind of tree. A moderate level of knowledge of botanical terminology is needed to fully comprehend it. The right (facing) open page contains diagrams (not photos) of leaf shapes, flowers, seeds, etc. for the tree being identified.

1 out of 5 stars Michigan Trees.......2007-01-11

I did not realize when I ordered this book that it was in black and white illustrations. I would have much more prefered it had colored photos of trees to help me identify them. I considered it a waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars nice tree book.......2006-12-22

Pretty decent book, quality paper and covers, informative, a fairly good guide, I would prefer full pictures of trees, which would show the bark, even if only in black and white. If your new to trees this book could be quite helpful and useful.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting & useful!.......2004-05-15

This is a great book both for identification and for planning which trees to plant in your yard. For each tree, not only its size, but also shade tolerance, growth rate, moisture requirements, preferred habitat & other trees that share its habitat are listed. A second book is planned to cover the shrubs & vines, which I am looking forward to.

The final chapters cover aspects of the Michigan climate including the different types of plant communities, vegetation history of Michigan from the glaciers to the present day, length of growing season for different areas, and average temperature & precipitation.

5 out of 5 stars must have for Great Lakes area tree enthusiasts.......2004-02-10

The new edition of Michigan Trees has lots of goodies--including colorized maps of serficial geology and vegetation communities, new species, and information about chromosome numbers for each species. However, the information about shrubs is gone (presumably to be put into a separate volume?), which detracts (slightly) from the book. However, it is still the best guide to trees in the Great Lakes region because of its beautiful line drawings, copious information about habitats, and plethora of identification characters.

    Product Description

Wildflowers are different from many wild things in that they don't scurry away never to be seen again, and they are not afraid when we approach them. Wildflowers are wonderful. They are colorful, they smell good, and they are everywhere. They are an integral part of our environment appearing almost as if by magic in our backyards, neighborhoods, local parks, woods, and fields. With a little effort, we can become acquainted with the wildflowers of our yards and neighborhoods, learn their names, and even a little more about them. You will find yourself looking forward to them each year and will discover that you learn something new each season. The purpose of this book is five-fold. First, it will help you learn to identify the most common wildflowers in any neighborhood, field, yard, or park. Second, you will learn about the basic anatomy of the plant and its flowers as an aid in the identification process. Third, you will come to appreciate the role of the wildflower in the world of nature. It is exciting to realize that the Goldfinch feeding on the thistledown of the Bull Thistle could mean the young are in a nest nearby, or that perhaps the Finch is taking the thistledown to build a nest. It is fascinating to know the Teasel head will soon be getting two rings of flowers as it continues blooming, and if it is to be used in a dried fall flower arrangement we need to bring gloves in order to handle it safely. The fourth purpose of this book is to encourage you to use these plants in your own backyards and gardens. Many of these plants can be successfully used to enhance the landscape design. Often this can be done as effortlessly as collecting seeds or digging a plant or two. However, care must be taken not to violate any laws or the integrity of another's property. Many wildflower gardeners are willing to share. Wildflower gardening is very popular and many gift catalogs exist as well as local garden shops that can take care of your needs. As this book cannot possibly cover all the wildflowers, the fifth purpose is to pique your curiosity and encourage you to learn more about other plants and wildflowers.

This is one of the finest books on Midwestern wildflowers. I originally bought the book for my mother and then needed one for myself. I continually pour through this book in anticipation of spring and as I find something in the woods that needs identifying. The book contains great pictures and is organized in general order of appearance in the wild.

Everyone should have this book in their personal library. This is the best book I have ever seen on wild plant identification. I use it regularly to identify and know the difference between native wild plants and weeds making sure not to destroy the beneficial plants.

I have learned a lot about plant identification from this book and wish it was more available. Everyone I know would have a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Needs to be reprinted.......1999-09-12

I do volunteer prairie restoration and this book is currently used by many people in the field. The people who use it a great deal say it is the best for plant ID. I have a list of 13 people who are looking for a copy of this book and it is highly recommended. Anyone know how to get 13 copies of this book or get the publisher to put it back in print?

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Work.......2001-08-16

I was extremely pleased when I received this book in the mail. I wasn't expecting the the pictures to be so beautifully vibrant and colorful. I'm not really sure what the previous review was making reference to. Each photograph is accompanied by text describing exactly how tall each flower is. I did take this book with me to a few parks, and I was easily able to locate and identify plants with its assistance. Even if you don't plan to use this book as a reference guide, it makes for beautiful viewing nonetheless. I hope this review was helpful to you.

2 out of 5 stars Not a plant ID book.......2001-07-30

If you are looking for a book with beautiful color photos of northeastern U.S. wild flowers, then this book will serve that purpose well. However, this is not what I would consider a helpful identification book. Many of the photos are close-ups of just the flowers which gives no sense of scale. The close-ups also mean that the leaves/vegetative parts of the plant remain a mystery. The text is kept to a minimum for each species. There is plenty of room on the page for more information, but the authors have left that space for the reader to make notes. The information that is provided is very sketchy in terms of habitat, identifying characteristics, and so on. Obviously a book of this size can't have everything, so the authors have sacrificed information in favor of visual stimulus. So enjoy the nice color photos, but don't expect to get much more out of this book.

3 out of 5 stars Great photos and variety; less than adequate description.......2000-06-06

The best feature of this book is the photos, period. There are some excellent shots of wildflowers from the dunes, prairies, woodlands, and wetlands found throughout the book. Plants are grouped according to their habitat, making plants easier to identify in the field than they would be in an ordinary key. There are quite a few problems with the book, though. Bloom dates are very misleading and seem to be stilted to the very northern portion of the range covered. There is also a misidentification of appendaged waterleaf (canada waterleaf in this book), which is an oversight considering three botanists worked on the manuscript. There are also quite a few spelling errors that should have been corrected. Finally, the information is tired and recycled from the writers' past works. Great for the photos but I was highly disappointed by the text.

I have read a number of different books on where to fish in the Virginia area and loved the coverage here. I typically do not go back to the same place in the same season in order to spread the pressure. David's book provided a large number of options that allow the reader to go to a new place each week and still have places left over for the next season. He includes hatch charts, directions as well as local references on hotels and restaurants. The info is up to date with the 2006 revision. Good work!

This book is for the beginning creative nonfiction writer--one who needs to be told that writers are an eccentric lot; one who has never heard of the Yaddo artists' colony. Still, Lee Gutkind, the author of several books of creative nonfiction and the founder/editor of the journal Creative Nonfiction, has some interesting things to tell us about this genre of writing, which strives to communicate real-life stories dramatically. The most important quality that a creative nonfiction writer can have, writes Gutkind, is passion: "A passion for the written word; a passion for the search and discovery of knowledge; and a passion for ... understand[ing] intimately how things in this world work." Gutkind offers instruction on finding story ideas, focusing one's work, keeping story files, fact checking, and interviewing; he tells us what to expect from editors and agents; and he teaches us how to know when we're ready to start writing (when you can "think of nothing more to ask or to learn"). Perhaps the best tidbit here is Gutkind's emphasis on delving deeply into one's subject matter without inserting oneself into the situation. "While immersing myself in a writing project," he says, "I routinely like to compare myself to a rather undistinguished and utilitarian end table in a living room or office. It is a fixture. You walk in and out of your living room dozens of times a day. You see the table, you expect to see the table, but you do not say, 'Well, there is the table, hello table.'" Appendices include a sample book proposal and readings.

4 out of 5 stars Understanding intimately how things work........2001-12-08

A clown for Ringling Brothers, an assistant in liver and heart transplantation surgeries, a baseball umpire, a motorcyclist and a participant in psychotherapy: When it comes to having the experience necessary to write interesting essays, Lee Gutkind is ahead of the game. In his textbook "The Art of Creative Nonfiction : Writing and Selling the Literature of Reality," Gutkind uses his passion for the written word and the experiences that inspire it to assist beginning creative nonfiction writers in their quest to share life through writing.

Covered in the book's outline-reminiscent chapters are instructions on interviewing, fact checking, finding ideas, creating dialogue and keeping story files. Straying from the norm of "interesting... [and] accurate," Gutkind stresses that the most important requirement of a creative nonfiction writer is passion- "A passion for the written word, a passion for the search and discovery of knowledge, and a passion for... understand[ing] intimately how things in this world work." In the following chapters, he offers advice on what creative nonfiction is (the relation experiences, often subjective) and is not (encyclopedia truth) in a concise yet affable manner.

Peppered with brief works from other writers used as illustrations of his suggestions, "The Art of Creative Nonfiction" is a solid, friendly text for beginning writers and an excellent stepping stone into the world of writing for a career.

          3 out of 5 stars Shallow.......2001-07-20

This book reads like an outline of a book on Creative Nonfiction. A beginner might find some chapters useful or inspiring, but anyone with writing experience is likely to find it too shallow. The chapter on Immersion--one of the key methods of reporting a highly detailed, creative story--is only 8 pages long, gives a few anecdotes, but provides next to no useful information to a writer contemplating this technique. The following chapter, on interviewing, is 10 pages long and more than half of it is composed of long excerpts from other stories. You might see the _results_ of doing a good interview, but not much beyond the obvious in actually carrying out a good interview.

This book doesn't stand out for me among the large number of mediocre books aimed at beginning to intermediate nonfiction writers.

5 out of 5 stars Confidence Building Tool for every aspiring writer.......2001-02-02

Initially I was afraid to invest hard cash on this book because I want my nonfiction to be totally factual. However, my fears were unfounded. This book was well worth the investment and I recommend it to all aspiring writers of nonfiction. The book is a tremendous eye-opener. It blows the myth that nonfiction writing has to be dull. Dull does not sell. If you are writing nonfiction, you need to read this book. For one thing, the author teaches that the words "creative" and "fiction" are not synonymous. You CAN write creative nonfiction.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for All Nonfiction Writers.......2000-06-09

How often has a piece of nonfiction writing left you bored to tears with its rambling of fact after fact, a completely limp, motionless piece? Well, Gutkind has developed a structured teaching method for this genre: frame, focus and scene. Once you understand his "yellow test," your writing will vastly improve, bursting with energy and radiating the essence of life, that is, the truth with a capital "T." He lifts your head, redirecting you from gazing into your own belly button, and unveils the techniques of capturing and presenting universal themes--a focus that touches us all. This book not only shows you how to write, more importantly, it show you how to think. Buy it today--he's the godfather of the genre, creative nonfiction, and the editor and founder of the only journal devoted exclusively to the genre.

          5 out of 5 stars Loved It.......2000-05-03

Great book. Makes me want to quit my day job and become a writer. I enjoyed the book thoroughly.
