Customer Reviews:
For a hard-to-find but truly great book.......2002-08-16
If all the pictures were of just the campgrounds, they would all look alike after a while! Instead, it's obvious as can be that the brilliant photography helps one visualize what you can experience if you spend time in these carefully chosen places. The highly readable text describes much more in detail.
Careful readers have noted that no campground gets in the book unless it has clean, accessible bathrooms. The author notes right from the beginning how important that is to many, especially families.
An update would be great. And a version for Southern California, too! This is a great book!
Good...but read my review for caveats........2001-07-31
De Wolk and Swain put together a very helpful book; but I think Swain decided to take on a bit more artistic license. Some of his photographs are of locations far from the campgrounds (but still within the defined area). For example, the photos of Yosemite Valley were taken about 23 miles away from the campground mentioned in the book. Other photos are of the more "select" campsites like at Samuel Taylor State Park. What you'll see is not necessarily what you'll get.
There's also a debate going on about this book on whether toilets are mentioned or not. A cross-check with Stienstra's "California Camping" book on a sample of 10 camps, plus De Wolks own preface, shows that they recommend camps that have toilets unless mentioned otherwise in the text. What isn't mentioned with consistency is whether or not the camps have hot showers.
The contact information and fees for the parks need to be updated as well. Some of the telephone numbers don't work and there's no forwarding service.
Still, this is a good book if only because it provides a bit more detailed information on these 50 campgrounds than any of the camping bibles. It's NOT the only book I use when choosing a campground for my family but it is a good starting place to get ideas. If you're into family car-camping, you can start with this book and cross-reference the data with books by Foghorn Outdoors (author Tom Stienstra), Menasha Ridge (author Bill Mai), and Frommers guide books.
BTW, some of the campsites mentioned in this book have grown crowded since its publication date. A revised edition is definitely called for.
HAS GOOD BATHROOM INFORMATION!.......2001-07-27
Roland De Wolk makes a big point that every campground he puts in his book has clean, working and accessible bathrooms -- otherwise they wouldn't be suitable for inclusion!
Needs information about bathrooms!.......2000-06-07
For a book geared for children, it seems very odd that campground amenities are not detailed. When traveling with young children, flush toilets and showers are very important!
more accurate and better choices than steinstra's books.......1999-09-23
great photos also help decide where to g
Book Description
"Laux writes gritty, tough, lyrical poems that depict the actual nature of life in the West today."Philip Levine
In her powerful fourth collection, Dorianne Laux once again strikes fire from neighborhood moments: a quiet street at dusk, a pool hall, a bare tree. Focusing on the grace of working people, she captures the pain and beauty of women in all their variety, caught in the "lunar pull" of our time.
Customer Reviews:
Working a healing.......2007-01-19
Laux's voice is impeccably skillful in the American Grain. Her imagery dances nice as you please and her music is clean as a whistle. What's best here is her passionate commitment to and celebration of a healing process that entrusts poetics to the uncanny capacity of love to pull wholeness out of chaos and pain if only you stick with the quest. These poems encourage and nourish.
"How could I have imagined then how alone I would become?".......2005-11-19
Speaking with authority from the first page, this collection is accessible, familiar, the poet's trenchant observations sitting like pearls upon the tongue, not precious, but the flawed ones that are left behind.
Democracy requires open eyes and a willingness to suffer discomfort for its own sake, the burr of memory kept sharp:
"... the woman with her purse clutched
to her breasts like a dead child, the boy, pimpled, morose, his head
shorn, a swastika carved in the stubble,
staring you down...
"You can feel it now: why people become Republicans: Get that dog
off the street. Remove that spit and graffiti. Arrest those people huddled
on the steps of the church." (Democracy)
The title poem reflects upon the reality that the moon is receding from the earth an inch and a half each year, that one day in the distant future it will finally spiral out of orbit and "all land based life will die". The moon is our regulator, our constant companion, a mother we have treated badly, defied and scorned:
"... a mother
who's lost a child, a bad child,
a greedy child or maybe a grown boy
who's murdered and raped, a mother
can't help it, she loves that boy
anyway, and in spite of herself
she misses him...
... and you know she's only
romanticizing, that she's conveniently
forgotten the bruises and the booze...
and you want... to slap her back to sanity...
... and then, you can't help it
either, you know love when you see it,
you can feel its lunar strength, its brutal pull." (Facts About the Moon)
Making peace with the years, Laux appreciates the value of the struggle, the small slivers that drive us from place to place for survival, leaving behind people, places, parts of ourselves:
"... But I know its only luck
that delivered him here, luck and a love
that had nothing to do with me. Except
that this is what we sometimes get
if we live long enough. If we are patient
with our lives." (Music in the Morning)
Laux spares nothing in her observations, not nature, others or self, alert to sea changes, monitoring the world around her:
"Go on, he beseeches,Get going, but the lone elk
stands her ground, their noses less than a yard apart.
One stubborn creature staring down another.
This is how I know the marriage will last." (The Crossing)
This collection bears the ring of truth, a view of the world from the street, the earth, nature's embrace, beneath the eye of the watching moon. Feelings are dissected, offering images that inform and transform, the power of language enhanced by an unflinching honesty. This is a poet who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty or her heart broken, a survivor of life's brutality and bounty. Luan Gaines/ 2005.
Book Description
If God is love, why are so many Christians fearful, and why do so many church leaders sound hateful? Two controversial pastors address issues the church won't face, calling us to restore grace as the center of the Christian life.
o In If Grace Is True, Pastors Philip Gulley and James Mulholland revealed their belief that God will save every person. They now explore the implications of this belief, and its power to change every area of our lives. They attempt to answer one question: If we took God's love seriously, what would our world look like?
Gulley and Mulholland argue that what we believe is crucial and dramatically affects the way we live and interact in the world. Beliefs have power. The belief in a literal hell where people suffer eternally has often been used by the Church to justify hate and violence, which contradicts what Jesus taught about love and grace. The authors present a new vision for our personal, religious, and corporate lives, exploring what our world would be like if we based our existence on the foundational truth that God loves every person.
Gulley and Mulholland boldly address many controversial issues people in the pews have wondered about but churches have been unwilling to tackle. For too long, the Christian tradition has been steeped in negativity, exclusion, and judgment. Gulley and Mulholland usher us into a new age––an age where grace and love are allowed to reign.
Customer Reviews:
Either you get it or you don't.......2007-04-16
I've already shared this book with my closest loved one, and I intend to get copies for other members of my family. With humility and humor, the authors explain their personal revelations, concerning the ultimate salvation of everyone. One of the important things that has been lost amongst all the bickering, about who's right and wrong, which ironically is covered extensively by the authors, is the fact that these are personal revelations that they decided to share with anyone who has an open mind and heart. I found many of the details of their own experiences with christianity, mirror my own. I left the 'church' long ago. I had my own personal revelations and found fellowship with others who are spiritually like minded and never looked back. I stumbled on this book at a friends' home, but I know it was a blessing that was delivered to me. What people fail to comprehend is that anytime they are in earshot of a sermon, they are listening to someone elses interpretation of scripture. So it makes no sense to berate these fellas for having an opinion. If the Christ appeared today, he would be crucified again, faster than you can say Easter. The world would sadden me beyond comprehension, except for the fact that I know everything and everybody will be alright in the end.
Wonderful........2007-03-09
While I do not agree with the authors on their "salvation for everyone," I do agree with virtually everything else in the book. I would love discuss this book with the authors one day.
Out of my Comfort Zone.......2007-03-09
This book and their other, "If Grace is True," were the basis of a spiritual breakthrough in my life. I devoured them both, I underlined and highlighted line after line. For the first time in my life, all my questions were being answered and everything I had thought/believed/questioned started to fall into place. Both challenged me beyond my comfort zone...questions about spirit, religion, politics and patriotism. It wasn't always fun but it was so so good for me.
Smorgasbord Christianity.......2007-01-05
Phillip (or the publisher) 'reels' in the reader (especially the Christian reader) with a catchy subtitle about rediscovering Grace (which I would argue is what we all need to be about - all the time). The important point that he makes early is that we all need to rediscover God's Grace so we can live graciously in an ungracious world.
So what is my beef with his book? In his great quest for spiritual answers, Phillip has decided that he is greater than God. For he states, up front, the rather bizzare claim that "all will be saved". He then goes on to take the Bible WAY out of context to "prove" his point.
He wants us to believe that all will eventually be "goodness and light" - he professes not to believe in Satan - etc, etc.
The SERIOUS problem that I have with his book is that he absolutely fails to deal with the issue of evil in this world. If we are all going to be saved, and there is no devil, or satan, or evil force - then why is there so much violence, hatred, and malice in the world today. Phillip does not have an answer for that, simply because he has decided to lift a brand of 'goodness' theology from the Bible, and has refused to acknowledge the greater truth - that salvation only comes from Jesus Christ, because man is inherrantly evil at his core, and cannot save himself, or enter a relationship with God by himself, without Christ. His refuses to believe this CORE tenat of the Christian faith, and his solution to his unbelief is to write this book to essentually say "Look, I know what the Bible said, but what you (the reader) read in the Bible is NOT the truth. I know better and I am going to tell you". In taking this approach, Phillip has taken on the very blasphemous role of deciding that he knows God better than Jesus did, and that he is a better truth-teller than Jesus. How arrogant.
This bad theological message should come accross loud and clear to the mature Christian reader. The danger of the book is that it has the potential to lull many Christians into thinking that Jesus didn't mean what he said when he said things like "heaven can only be entered through a narrow gate" and "at that day I will say ... depart from me, for your deeds were evil"
Phillip Gulley practices a brand of Smorgasbord Christianity that is akin to eating Chinese fast food - it leaves you feeling full and satified, but in only a few hours you find yourself hungering for more, and you have that dissatifying, empty feeling.
I found it an interesting, thought provoking read for a mature Christian who is very grounded in solid biblical truths. All others should stay away.
Please, come to the Scriptures with humility.......2006-10-11
My mother has been friends with Mr. Mulholland and his family for several years, and she and I will both testify that he is a kind man with good intentions. However, we are both saddened by the message he and the other writer put forward in this book and his other works. I sincerely hope that readers of this book will not embrace everything that is said without also going to the scriptures to examine his claims. I feel this issue is important enough to warrant such extended study, and I hope you do as well.
