Book Description
When The Trustees of Reservations was founded in 1891 as America's first private, statewide conservancy, belief in the restorative powers of nature was a relatively new idea in America. Gradually, the colonial impulse to subjugate the wild was transformed into a humanistic reverence for the spiritual power of nature, and land was set aside for preservation. Thanks to the efforts of The Trustees of Reservations and many others, Massachusetts now has 1.1 million acres of land permanently protected from development-more than one-fifth of the state.
The custodians and promoters of this remarkable legacy of conservation include town and city governments, state and federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, private institutions, and generous landowners, all of whom have been influenced by the work of The Trustees of Reservations.
Land of the Commonwealth is the first photographic book devoted exclusively to the conserved landscapes of a single state. It is both a visual introduction to the diverse natural and cultural sites that have been protected and a tribute to the accomplishments of all those who have worked to safeguard Massachusetts's rich landscape heritage.
Organized geographically into five regional sections, the book uses spectacular color photographs by Richard Cheek to capture the scenic, historic, and ecological dimensions of the conserved landscapes of Massachusetts. Each chapter begins with a description of the region's defining characteristics, followed by images of exemplary natural, designed, working, historical, and literary landscapes. Some are popular and beloved, others little-known and waiting to be discovered.
Customer Reviews:
Breathtaking!.......2000-12-20
Each turn of the page reveals another exceptional view. It's easy to take gorgeous landscape photos of New England in Autumn, but Richard Creek goes far beyond that. The lighting, cloud conditions, reflections, and seasonal conditions bring out the most in each photograph. I want to frame each one and hang it on my walls, or better still, visit each place and hope to see and capture a similar moment. I hope Mr. Creek follows up with a series of other states.

complete triathlon book.......2007-09-24
This book is full of information about training for any kind of a triathlon, from sprint to ironman. Very informative
Highly recommended!.......2007-09-15
I found this book very good. I first got it from the Library and then decided it was a book I wanted on my shelf. It covers all the bases for learning about, training for and performing in Triathlons. It is very up to date and very practical in it's approach. I am a novice and this book has made me feel quite competent in how to approach, prepare for and perform in triathlons. It is chock full of information and I highly recommend it if you're at all serious about improving your performance.
The most scientific approach to triathlon I have encountered........2007-05-15
This book is by far the best scientific guide to the science of fitness and nutrition associated with triathlon. I have always had unanswered questions about carb consumption and storage, oxygen usage, aerobic, and anerobic thresholds. This book gave me more answers than any other I have ever read.
A Beginner's Triathlon Reference.......2007-04-09
Athletes just getting into the triathlon movement can learn important tips about nutrition and workouts. This is a great training reference too.
Extremely Basic and Fairly Obvious Material.......2007-01-24
I read this book in a couple hours after I received it in the mail. I've competed at the most basic amatuer level in triathlons, and I've led a life that is relatively healthy (I run often, know how to swim, and I take a long bike if the weather permits). Knowing how to eat right, and how to stretch, this book provide absolutely no help to me. If, though, you've never done anything althetic before, and you don't know that "whole foods are better for you than processed foods," and you need to be told not to eat mayonaise three times a day, then maybe you should consider reading this before competing in a triathlon. I was very disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
All you need to know to "complete a triathlon!".......2002-07-03
For both the novice and the experienced, this book offers triathletes all they need to know to finish the race ahead of the pack. There's detailed information on how to rate yourself physically in swimming, bicycling, and running and refine your skills at each; how to improve fitness for peak performance; develop a training program; keep a training log; cope with hazards and avoid injury; select the right apparel and equipment; eat properly in training and during the race; and condition the "mental muscle" as well as your heart--There is a great section on training using your heart rate monitor that is particularly informing for those just getting started with a heart rate monitor--all in all, I thought it was very complete, precise and to the point--Lots of good tips and helpful information for the Newbie and more experienced. I keep it handy for referencing and recommend it to those who are new to the sport or looking for ways to improve.
Great reference and motivation inside.......2002-06-24
I became hooked on this book when I did my first Triathlon last autumn. I felt it gave me the information I needed and the upbeat way it was presented just added to my excitement. I can tell that the author is completely in love with triathlon and wants to see others have the same kind of fun she does. I keep this book handy and have referred to it several times this spring as I train for the three tri's I plan to do this summer. The book is my main triathlon reference and I very much recommend it.
Overview of the basics to get you into Triathlons!.......2002-06-13
As a newby to the sport it was nice to read a book that gave me an overview of what I could expect. I had only done 2 races when I read this book and it really helped me understand what I was doing right and wrong. If you want an overview of the sport and are planning to do your first race this is a MUST BUY!!
Sally does a great job of explaining all the ins/outs of the sport and provides a good base of knowledge. She provides resources to more information on specific subjects which is helpful.
Dissapointed.......2002-03-06
I was fooled when I read the back cover and Scott Tinley's recommendation. The book is total fluff. Ms. Edwards tries so hard to cover everything, she ends up covering nothing in any worthwhile detail. I spent less money on the Triathlete's Training Bible by Joe Freil and it was worth so much more. For beginner triathletes, there are much better books. (Swim/Bike/Run by Wes Hobson and even Triathlon 101) For current triathletes looking to improve, stick with Joe Freil's Bible.

Book Description
A bilingual dictionary of high-frequency Spanish and English idioms alphabetized according to their key words.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful for students.......2007-03-21
I'm a senior citizen taking a Spanish conversation class. This book was recommended by our instructor and each week we select 2 or 3 at random and discuss them. The material is excellent and fun. I always like just browsing and seeing how similar and how different Spanish idioms are from the English.
Solid coverage of Spanish idioms.......2005-08-19
Compared with some of the other books in my Spanish reference collection, this one is not absolutely indispensable, hence the four-star rating. It does have a lot going for it, though, and the previous two reviewers mentioned some of those useful features. For one thing, the book is highly readable and easy to follow. Also, the sample sentences provide excellent context for each idiomatic expression. And the format of the book is almost identical to that of a bilingual dictionary, allowing the reader to look up idioms by language. All expressions are translated between the two languages, but some idioms are listed in only one language or the other.
As a supplement to this book -- and to have a measure of comparison -- I bought "The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs" by Peter Weibel. Besides claiming to have 12,000 idioms, "Big Red" is a little more recent and is part of the outstanding Spanish reference lineup from publisher McGraw Hill. I have yet to find a be-all and end-all bilingual reference book of Spanish and English idioms. You can definitely choose worse than "2001"; you can choose better by going with Weibel' book, but "2001" is a pretty close second -- for me, anyway. Savaiano's most comprehensive entry in the field (he's written other similar books) has generally met most of my expectations.
A great supplementary study guide-fun reading material........2002-05-15
Any additional reading material other than a text book is always helpful when studying a language. Idiomatic expressions always present difficulties or challenges especially if they cannot be translated word for word. The objective of this book is to provide the reader with an explanation of the meaning and an example of how some common idioms are used in the Spanish language. I found that the book is well organized, divided alphabetically, concise and covers a broad range of examples non specific to a country, region or group of Spanish speakers. Once again NTC Publishing Group has provided readers and learners of Spanish with a useful and handy reference that can definitely enrich one's knowledge and understanding of Spanish either written or spoken. Here are some examples of the range of idioms that are outlined in the book:
1) de hecho = in fact (cannot be translated literally)
2) sin embargo = however (cannot be translated literally)
3) a primera vista= at first sight (common, everyday expression. Easy to understand)
4) dar la lata = to make a nuisance of oneself ( cannot be translated word for word, common expression)
5) tener mala pata= to have bad luck (common everyday expression)
This book not only contains idioms but everyday short frases that sometimes are hard to express correctly if one has not learned the correct way or has not heard it used prior. An example of this would be #1 and #2 above. These types of short frases are important because they are of everyday usage and the more one knows the more authentic the Spanish will sound. If you are looking to enrich your Spanish regardless of your current level, this book will definitely be of great help and will broaden your overall knowledge and understanding of the language.
Don't just memorize words, learn to use them!.......1999-01-29
I picked up this book from a shelf in a bookstore and I just had to have it. It is neatly organized by keyword and has both a Spanish and an English side. Each entry consists of a keyword, a brief definition, and the most common expressions using that word along with an example using it. People often face the problem of hearing a word in the context of an expression and finding it in a dictionary that gives its literal meaning. This book solves that problem. There are too many expressions, and no book could have every one imaginable, but this book makes a great attempt. I recommend this book to anybody who is at all interested in Spanish, in any stage of learning it.
