Book Description
Health Ecologybrings together a variety of approaches from different perspectives and different locations, the contributors examine the various dimensions of health ecology in the framework of human ecology.
Book Description
Fantastic computer graphics systematically explain how to tune-your-yacht, keelboat or dinghy.
This beautifully illustrated and well-organised book shows the reader step by step, how to trim their sails and rig for maximum performance. Ivar Dedekam’s revolutionary approach to sail and rig tuning tackles the practical and realistic elements of tuning your boat as well as the theory of sail aerodynamics. The book covers the many variations in boat, sail and rig design.
Customer Reviews:
All most of us need to know on sail & rig tuning.......2007-05-30
When it comes to sail & rig tuning I think it is important not to complicate things too much and write 3 exceptions for every rule. This book gives clear advice on the biggest issues in sail & rig trim and illustrates them as well.
Very good book to get the most out of your boat!
Racing or Cruising; this is stuff you NEED to know.......2006-05-29
Good physics, good illustrations, good explanations mean that you will have the intellectual tools to maximize your sail power. That will mean minutes in a race, and hours or days on a passage...as well as the safety of a well tuned rig. A must read for anyone powered by sail.
Excellent on tuning, not so good on engineering........2005-06-21
I brought this book to check the rigging on a boat that I want to build.
The diagrams are very clear and the book is concise and easy to read.
While this book was helpful it was not really what I was after.
I see this book being great for those sailors who want to win races.
One of the Best Books on Rigging Out There.......2004-05-11
There is nothing more frighten then a mast coming down at sea. Just the mere thought of it is enough to have a lot of cruising sailors pouring pockets full of money into the hands of riggers up and down the island chain. However rigging isn't that hard, heck I even know a couple guys who decided overnight to be riggers. They hung up their shingles and we started genuflecting before them as if they were the font of all knowledge. Well before you reach your hand out for that holy water, maybe you should check out this very fine book. It will educate you into the black art of rigging a sailboat. You'll know, without consulting that expert, when to replace that turnbuckle or wire. You'll learn how to tune your rig yourself and, need I say it, you'll probably save enough money to pay for that new laptop you've had your eye on.
Great Explainations and Illustrations.......2002-09-03
This is my favorite book on sail trim. It not only explains what to do, but why to do it. It is organized well and has great illustations. It is not just for novices, but has information that more experienced sailors will find useful. For example, it has pages with illustrations showing the comparative (in percentages) sail drafts to use for various winds strengths and conditions.
Customer Reviews:
Good book on Marconi Rig sail trim.......2004-06-30
This is not a book to read once and then go sailing and win. At least for me, I had to read a chapter or two, go out and try it, the read and repeat. The bit that helped me the most was the theory of the vang. I've used it for downwind legs to hold the boom down but not for upwind. With a bendy mast you can open up the leach by using the vang on the upwind legs too. It pushes the mast forward and induces a bend. With a stiff mast it closes off the leach. It's just one more control that I wasn't using well.
The terms "power up" and "vector" and used all over the place, and honestly if I knew what would "power up" the boat while keeping my boat pointing all the time I wouldn't need this book, but there are clues as to what will help drive the boat.
The text on the spinaker is also great. You really do need to keep the leading edge just at a curl and Stuart explains why. It does help, I pass boats going downwind all the time who have stalled their spinakers.
If you are a serious single design racer you need this book. You PHRF'ers will rarely know if what you are doing helped other than to watch the knot meter. If you beat another boat, was it just sail area and hull length? Or did you really get the maximum performance out of your sails.
And yes those tell-tails are key to seeing the air flow on the sail.
It's a cookbook of sailtrim.......2003-01-02
Walker's sail trim book is a cookbook of sailtrims. I found the information that I had lacked from this book so it is useful for sail racers. The organization of the book is poor - information conserning some topic is hiddened to 2-3 places and is difficult to find due to poor table of contents and short of index. The book is mostly for dinghies(?) because vang sheeting was always used and often the only solution for correct trim. Backstay, or runners was only mentioned few times. About checkstays I could not find any information. But - because the correct sailshape information could be found for every situation, it was very useful, but good background knowledge is needed to apply the information for other boats having checkstays, runners, etc.
I don't recommend it for novice or even intermediate level or cruisers. With some reorganization it could be recommended for everyone.
Two lessons learnt.......2002-07-02
After reading this book, I learnt two important aspects of sail trim which helped improve my racing.
1. Tell tails are very important, especially regarding sail twist.
2. The positioning of the jib track, whether forward or aft or inboard or outboard is crucial to maintaining speed on a tight reach.
Therefore, I am happy with the purchase of the book. I have many other sail tuning books have not transferred any successful ideas to my racing skills.
Sail. Read. Think. Discuss. Repeat........2001-05-31
If you've got a couple of seasons of serious sailing (racing) under your belt, and you're looking to improve your mastery of sail trim, this book can aid in understanding. This is not the most approachable read, but it's equally true that there is detailed knowledge here that you just won't find anywhere else.
Another reviewer pointed out that the book is organized by sail controls, not by conditions, or shapes you want to achieve. But it's very important to point out that great information about desirable sail shapes and how they are appropriate to various conditions IS contained in the book. For instance, my understanding of how much sail twist to put in, based on wind strength and water smoothness comes from applying what I read in Walker.
Here's how it works for me.
Sail a bunch. Reach a threshold. Read Walker. Sail some more. Think. Sail some more. Attend a sail-trim seminar such as the one held by Kame Richards, in the Bay Area. Sail some more. Talk things over with guys I sail with. Sail some more. Improve. Repeat.
You can't get better at sailing just by reading. No book can do that for you. But Walker is one way to get the in-depth knowledge you'll need to continue to improve.
Don't let the term "vector" cause your brain to immediately turn off. Remember, "vector" is just a fancy word for a force applied in a specific direction. And we do use a few of those in sailing ;-)
Lots of information, but lacking reasoning about why..........1998-10-06
The book is filled with solid information about the sail trim. However, I found the book dull to read (despite the fact that I am a keen sailor with a Master of Science in Engineering). The book takes the approach to explain each trim device in isolation. There is plenty of information about each trim device. I could not find any trim device not described in the book. If you want to know everything you can do with the vang, then this is the book for you.
The book fails to explain what kind of overall sail trim you want in different situations. There is not a single example starting with a specific situation (like high waves, 2 knots of wind) and then explaining how -- and why -- to use all the trim devices to achieve maximum speed. There is very little information about the interaction of the trim devices.

For more than forty years, the Haugen Norwegian–English Dictionary has been regarded as the foremost resource for both learners and professionals using English and Norwegian. With more than 60,000 entries, it is esteemed for its breadth, its copious grammatical detail, and its rich idiomatic examples. In his introduction, Einar Haugen, a revered scholar and teacher of Norwegian to English speakers, provides a concise overview of the history of the language, presents the pronunciation of contemporary Norwegian, and introduces basic grammatical structures, including the inflection of nouns and adjectives and the declension of verbs.
Customer Reviews:
recommended!.......2007-10-15
This dictionary is very good, the best one I've found so far, and I've been in Norway for 2 months. maybe if I try the best bookstores in big cities can find something similar, but in Norway, most dictionaries will be aiming norwegian speakers who want to learn english, so they don't come with fonetics or gender for words. the only problem with this dictionary is that it's only norwegian english, so I had to buy an english-norwegian, norwegian-english one. what i have to do when I want to learn a new word i know in english, is to look for it in the english-norwegian one and then go to my nice green one and look for gender, plural, etc. also, i'd add some fonectic symbols!
The Best Dictonary you will need when learning Norsk!.......2007-07-30
Learning Norsk had been a real challenge for me. This book really helped me with my travels and learning the language. A real must for anyone learning Norwegian. A great book!
Good dictionary.......2006-11-10
Good and complete, a very nice book. Too bad it's only norwegian to english, the other way round would have been fantastic.
YES!.......2006-08-23
Finally, a comprehensive and full dictionary that show pronounciation, and even though for the beginner the "ny-norsk" entries don't seem to be of much use, my husband now after he has become more proficient in the language actually find it interesting having the "ny-norsk" words in there.
Only thing missing to make this complete would be a English-Norwegian part to it, and also this dictionary is due for an update (it's from 1974!!) into the millenium, that would definately give this puppy a clear 5 star, but for now a sturdy 4 star.
Very comprehensive.......2006-08-07
I studied Norwegian for about 3 years in college and used multiple dictionaries. This seemed to be the most comprehensive dictionary that we used. Just like any dictionary it is meant as a reference and not a comprehensive way to learn a language. This is a very handy book to have on your bookshelf if you feel comfortable reading the language but need to translate words every now and again. Highly recommended.

Deep Black: Dark Zone (MP3-CD Unabridged) .......2007-02-06
I bought this to listen to in the car while I drive but have thus far not had a chance to listen to it yet. However, I did check it out to determine if the MP3 format would play in my car, as I thought CD formats and MP3 formats were interchangeable. However, the MP3 format will not play in my car's CD player, and I am greatly disappointed about this. Consequently, I cannot give an accurate rating to this product at this time.
Ending endings endings!.......2005-05-22
Knowing how to start a book is one thing, figuring out how to end it is another.
As a techno thriller it is better than some, but occaisionally an author needs to consider reality. Without putting a spoiler into this review, the ending of this book just couldn't happen and have the good guys survive.
Leave the ending aside, I thought this Deep Black installment moved away from the razzle-dazzle (which was good) and left the action to the Deep Black Agents (I wish I could feel something for the characters).
This book rolls along pretty well.
Will I read another Deep Black, probably. Will I expect a masterpiece - uh-uh.
Deep Black Returns!.......2005-03-07
Once again you have the stars of the NSA(National Security
Agency,Charlie Dean,Tommy Karr,and Lia DeFrancesca back into
action. Lia has to first escape Korea before she can join her
teammates in France. While the head of NSA Ruebens is battling
for the security and existance of NSA the team has incovered a
frightening consparicy. There is a nuclear weapon missing from
the French stockpile. After an intense investigation it is found
to be in the possession of an Algerian terrorist. The villain in
this story(the terrorist) intends on exploding the nuclear bomb
and disrupting the landscape of France. This blast would alter
the coastline and affect the landscape of France.Charlie Dean
and the team are also having to deal with a traitor in their ranks as well. You have several exciting scenes at the Eiffel
Tower and the Chunnel. The story has an exciting ending as well.
Who actually wrote this thing?.......2005-03-01
I have never written a review before but i just had to so others would not feel the same pain. I have read almost all of Coonts other books and bought this with anticipation. What a boring bunch of junk this was. It was obviously wriiten by the co-author and then had Coonts name put on it by the publisher to give it some credibility. Save your money and look elsewhere.
Thoroughly Entertaining.......2005-02-20
This was book was a page turner. Took me 2-1/2 days to complete it, it was the type of read that sucked you into the story. The characters were well developed, and the scenes had an almost "zen" like flow between them. Personally I felt this book was almost a cinema for the mind.
It's worth the money.
