Book Description
Disillusioned by urban life, Trish Tuley found sanctuary in the American wilderness. After escaping the Los Angeles corporate world in 1993, she picked up a camera and walked thousands of miles, capturing her communions with the land on film.
Eight years later, a chance meeting with poet Myra Dutton revealed a kindred spirit, an individual who had also hiked many miles and shared her passion to serve nature through art. This connection lead to HEALING GROUND, a collection of 10 years of visual and literary meditations on the natural world. Comprised of awe-inspiring photos juxtaposed with soul-stirring poetry, this illuminating work is a much-needed reminder of our scarce and sacred Mother Earth, and her capacity for healing the soul.

Book Description
In June of 2002, the U.S. Open was played, for the first time in history, on a true public golf course. Bethpage State Park is owned by the state of New York, and no membership is required to play there. This is golf at its most populist, most pure-and most challenging. In what Tiger Woods himself would declare 'the most difficult national championship,' Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson, Nick Faldo, and the rest would, through days of rain and roughs, learn the hard way that while Bethpage may be open to the public, even for the pros the chance of winning can be closed off to mere mortals. With unprecedented backstage access, John Feinstein finally removes the mystery shrouding golf's most famous event, unraveling how pairings are made; qualifiers; setting up the golf course; and all the complexities of bringing golf's most exclusive competition to a truly public setting. In fascinating detail, Feinstein takes readers through every step, every thorny hole, every bitter rivalry of golf's greatest tournament.

It took a Long Time to get "Inside the Ropes".......2007-08-28
One of the more disappointing books by John Feinstein. He acts like the people putting on the 2002 U.S. Open were working on a cure for cancer. But seriously if the people described have all the abilities that Feinstein accredits them with, why aren't they doing something more meaningful than putting on a Golf Tournament. ALSO since I am a Huge Tiger Woods fan the usual Feinstein bashing of Tiger is not appreciated. One thing that surprised me is that NBC dictates pairings and starting times. If David Fay has all the integrity that Feinstein gives him credit for, he should not allow NBC to be so selective.
Also, I remeber watching this event on the tube. And Feinstein does not capture the enthusiasm that New Yorkers displayed for Phil Mickelson. The Book does not mention that he was called "The Mick."
The only question was how low to rate this book. Though unscientific 3 stars "feels" right.
Somewhat disappointing.......2006-11-06
Typical Feinstein ("A Season on the Brink" excepted). Quick, gossipy, superficial, fawning, etc., etc. This book is about the 2002 U.S. Open Golf Championship at the Bethpage Black Golf Course, a New York State Park course on Long Island. The subtitle, "Inside the Ropes at Bethpage Black," is used here as a figure of speech, meaning "behind the scenes." ("Inside the ropes" is normally used in the context of a professional golf tournament to refer to the actual playing area itself -- spectators are separated from the golfers, caddies, officials, and other chosen few by thin ropes that tell the spectators how close they can get to the action.) Feinstein's purpose is to give the reader a look at the unfolding of a golf tournament from its conception to its completion. We see U.S Golf Association (the organization that conducts the tournament) leaders in action and learn something about the logistics of putting on a golf tournament (e.g., 4,850 people willing to volunteer their time so that the professional golfers and U.S.G.A. can have a huge payday), about random qualifiers and random competitors, and about the resurrection of the Black golf course. Yet the book does not fulfill its promise. My guess is that Feinstein's indebted to too many golf people for both his past and anticipated future lifestyle to offer the kind of critical insights and analysis I had hoped for.
Good book........2006-05-15
Being from Long Island, I understand the story behind the US Open. I was also able to go to the Open on the Saturday and get a feel for the event. As such I really appreciated this book because it is hard to build such an event in the public course like Bethpage. It is a testament to the USGA on how organized they are and all of the event preplanning they do. I thought it was a different and insightful look at the Open
A good look at this historic U.S. Open.......2005-04-28
John Feinstein's writting never sucks you in to leave you with the "I can't put it down" feeling. No, his books move slower and more methodically.
But in the end his books, this title included, leave the reader with a satisfied feeling. A feeling that they have gotten an in depth look, with thorough reporting and a sometimes unique perspective, at a sports issue.
The beauty of "Open" is that this event was widely reported on and covered by the media at the time of the U.S. Open. But the author's reporting starts us on this jpurney decades earlier and shows us many more reasons why this particular U.S. Open was an historic and dramatic event, aside from the obvious answers that are already known.
He merges the players on the course with the players behind the scenes who made the event happen. He shows the history of the financing of the U.S. Open and how that has evolved. His wrttting is crisp and clear and he sets the scenes in the book nicely with important details about key figures that help the reader appreciate their role in the events even more.
This book should appeal greatly to the golf fan and have a slightly broader appeal to those who enjoy good reporting from behind the scenes of major news events.
Perfect for Golf Geeks.......2005-04-28
I loved the book -- absolutely loved it. But then, I'm a golf geek. I love to learn all the details about running a classic event like the U.S. Open. But if you're not a golf geek, you'll hate the book. You won't care about the groundskeeper and how his team brought this aging course back to life. You won't care about how the USGA caters to corporate sponsors. You'll skip pages, maybe even chapters. It'll be a complete waste of your time and money.
But for a golf geek, the story is fascinating. I found myself turning page after page, soaking in every detail about bringing the U.S. Open to Bethpage. And while there's alot of detail, Feinstein's narrative moves you through at a good clip. He doesn't labor for pages on the needless or the pointless. All-in-all, it's a solid book. If you enjoyed Feinstein's "A Good Walk Spoiled," you'll enjoy this. (Note: If you haven't read "A Good Walk Spoiled," buy that first. "Open" is good. But "A Good Walk Spoiled" is better, and you shouldn't miss it.)

Book Description
One of the greatest treasures in the collection of the Folger Shakespeare Library, The Trevelyon Miscellany is a 400-year-old hand drawn and lettered book created by the skilled scribe and patternmaker Thomas Trevelyon. Borrowing words and images from English and European woodcuts, engravings, broadsides, almanacs, emblem books, and the Bible, Trevelyon created a rich and fascinating encyclopedia of daily life and thought in Shakespeare's England. Familiar scenes of domesticity and husbandry are intertwined with accounts of the rulers of England, descriptions of local fairs, the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, astronomy according to Ptolemy, illustrations of the seasons, the nine muses and seven deadly sins, Old Testament history, household proverbs, alphabets, and embroidery patterns. A massive volume (18 inches tall and weighing over 17 pounds), this monumental work is now available to be studied and enjoyed in a gorgeous facsimile edition, thanks to state-of-the-art conservation and high-resolution digitization. Produced to commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Folger Shakespeare Library, this limited edition facsimile is printed on archival paper, Smyth sewn, and bound in cloth-wrapped boards with a reinforced spine and full-color dust jacket. In addition to the 594 pages illustrated by Trevelyon, the volume includes a new introduction and indexes to poetry, scripture, subjects, images, and Trevelyon's sources.

Book Description
In the best tradition of sound-bites and pithily entertaining witticism, David and Ben Crystal's The Shakespeare Miscellany gathers together essential facts and fascinating insights about William Shakespeare--probably the most famous writer of all time--and the world in which he lived and worked.
The Shakespeare Miscellany includes essential biographical facts (and fictions) that have been part of Shakespeariana for centuries, as well as a great deal of information that will be unfamiliar to most general readers. Some topics include anachronisms, the lost plays, what Shakespeare would have studied at school, pronunciation, why the Globe burned down, the difference between a Folio and a Quarto, and malapropisms...just for starters.

A groatsworth of wit bought without a single repentence.......2006-07-05
I cannot more enthusiastically recommend this delightful little encyclopedia of Bardolotrous arcania. I am especially impressed by the ample amunition provided for Stratfordians like myself in defense against the senseless conspiracy theorists who continue to contend that someone else authored Shakespeare's works. I wonder: has there been a single publication of Shakespeare scholarship contributed by an anti-Stratfordian, or is their only interest in Shakespeare in regard to the authorship? What a waste of intellect!
A Compendium..........2006-03-27
A gathering of useless facts, and trivia. A must have for a Shakespeare fan...
PURE PLEASURE.......2005-08-18
Everything you always wanted to know and then some about the greatest wordsmith of all time is found in this slim, trim volume by Shakespearean scholar David Crystal, and his son, Ben Crystal. Ever wonder just how many words Shakespeare invented? Well, in case you do there are "357 instances where Shakespeare is the only recorded user of a word in one or more of its senses."
Now, just in case listeners aren't properly impressed with the profundity and depth of your knowledge, you can always toss in the number of times the Bard was among several to use a word for the first time.
Jack Lemmon is quoted as saying that he was unconvinced that Shakespeare didn't make up words just to upset the actors. (Lemmon was rehearsing for his part in Kenneth Branagh's "Hamlet.")
How's that for cocktail party conversation?
David Crystal won a host of readers with his "The Stories of English." We quickly learned that he makes the most esoteric subjects fun, and he continues to do so with "The Shakespeare Miscellany."
This is one of those delightful books that you can pick up and enjoy for a minute or two and then return to as you wish. Lest you think Crystal is all fun and games - `tis not so. There are numerous insights into Shakespeare's poems and plays offering a greater understanding of this master's work, as well as interesting information about his life and the world in which he lived.
"The Shakespeare Miscellany" is pure pleasure.
By the way, do you have any idea who might have been "the dark lady" that Shakespeare addressed in many of his sonnets? Or, can you guess some of the folks who shared birth or death dates with the Bard? Alright - I'll tell you two: Shirley Temple shares his birth date, and Miguel de Cervantes shares his death date.
Did I mention that "The Shakespeare Miscellany" is addictive? - Gail Cooke

Unique and superbly presented.......2001-01-11
The Naxos production of Great Historical Shakespeare Recordings offers the listener a unique and superbly presented compilation of some of the greatest recordings of Shakespearean material dating from the very beginnings of the recording era. Here you will find Shakespeare being recited by such legends of the stage as Henry Irving, Ellen Terry, Herbert Beerbohm Tree, John Barrymore, John Gielgud, Sybil Thorndike, Hugh Cassohn, Laurence Olivier, and many more. Also included are performances by such unlikely but gifted Shakespearean performers as Charles Laughton, Edith Evans, Laurel and Hardy, Bransby Williams, Dylan Thomas, Sarah Bernhardt, and others. In addition to Shakespeare enthusiasts and scholars, Great Historical Shakespeare Recordings is highly recommended to students and the non-specialist general listener who would enjoy sampling the variety of impressive performances over the past several decades.
The Shakespeare is pricessless.......2000-09-09
Of especial interest to students of the theatre and certainly to actors is a Naxos collection of
(NA 220012) on two CDs or tapes.
The first one gives us the voices of such Shakespearean luminaries as Herbert Beerbohm Tree, Arthur Bourchier, Lewis Waller, Frank Benson, Johnston Forbes Robertson, John Gielgud, Sybil Thorndike, Lewis Casson, John Barrymore, Laurence Olivier, Henry Irving, Edwin Booth, and Ellen Terry. The last three are preserved on cylinders and the Booth one is scarcely audible. All of these readings are in the grand style, and it is instructive to compare the "Once more unto the breach" of Waller and Benson with that of Olivier. Terry's youthful delivery belies her age, but too many of the readers came to the recording session far past their prime. Still, this is living history and utterly fascinating as such.
The "Miscellany" is a mixed bag indeed. We have pairs of actors such as Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence in "Private Lives," Fred Terry and Julia Neilson in a poorly chosen scene from "The Scarlet Pimpernel," John Gielgud and Edith Evans in the marvelous handbag scene from "The Importance of Being Earnest," and even Laurel and Hardy recording in London. (Strange bedfellows indeed.)
Solo "turns" are performed by Tree as Svengali, Bransby Williams imitating Irving in "The Bells" and several (then) notable theatre personalities in his monologue "The Stage Doorkeeper," Henry Ainley reading "The Charge of the Light Brigade," and Charles Laughton reading (of all things) The Gettysburg Address (from the film "Ruggles of Red Gap").
The last foreign-language selections will not be of great interest to many listeners and of immense interest to students of European acting styles. We have Sarah Bernhardt reading "Phedre," Jean Mournet-Sully as Oedipus (in French), Constant Coquelin, the original Cyrano, racing through the Ballade of the Duel, Feodor Chaliapin reading a poem in a language I cannot identify, and Alexander Moissi doing excellent readings from "Faust" and the "Erlkoenig."
The notes are brief but informative and were written by David Timson, whose "History of Theatre" is also available on Naxos and reviewed on its appropriate web site.

Book Description
Readers will learn to understand and experience the extraordinary goodness of God!
Gloria Copeland believes that far too many people-even Christian believers-are living with far too little of God's provision for them. Why? For the simple reason that they've never discovered the true nature of God.
By tracing God's goodness throughout the entire Bible, she demonstrates to readers that because of God's great love for them, they can receive salvation and so much more-healing, deliverance, peace, blessings, and every other good thing God has promised in His Word.
Copeland goes on to show the keys to receiving these blessings, beginning with the first step of discovering and embracing God's true nature of goodness and kindness toward His children-not the all-too-pervasive image of an angry and condemning God.
This will be one of the most important books of the year to help Christian's grow spiritually and experience God's absolute best for them.

All that is good.......2005-08-26
When things seem down and out and you don't know where to turn, pick up a copy of BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE by Gloria Copeland. This book will be your inspirational cheerleader to remind you of God's awesome goodness. From Genesis to Revelation, this book is chock full of reminders relating to God's wonderfulness. The first step in recognizing God's potential is accepting Him as your personal Lord and Savior. By understanding the truth of the words in the Bible and believing in the goodness of God is the foundation of our faith, Mrs. Copeland states, "He will restore wholeness in your life, spirit, soul and body." She cites Psalm 84 which tells us that "No good thing will be withheld from those who walk uprightly."
The book is laced with metaphorical encouragement that just prompts the reader to be enlightened and renewed. One passage that stuck with me was "Feed your heart with the goodness of God." Here, Ms. Copeland is urging readers to not only trust God for eternal salvation but challenges us to see the daily goodness of God in the land of the living. He is a redeemer, a conqueror, and all in all, He is love! BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE reminds us that God will fulfill our desires, and by having faith, God will bless us and provide deliverance just like he did for Israel.
This book is filled with positivity and has an upbeat vibe that is undeniable! If during your Christian walk, you're looking for some solid reinforcement and reassuring direction, look no further. BLESSED BEYOND MEASURE is written in a flowing manner that is easy to understand yet filled with wonderful insight.

God Is Good.......2005-06-09
Many churches focus on how to be saved, but teach little about prosperity, healing, living a victorious Christian life, and how to live joyfully. Many people base their ideas about their heavenly Father by their earthly father which provides only a distorted view of God. If their earthly father was harsh, they see Jesus as unloving and unforgiving. If their earthly father was kind and gentle, they see Jesus like their earthly father kind, but full of mistakes. Jesus is like neither of these. Gloria Copeland takes us through the Bible quoting many verses simply, so a child can easily understand who we are in Christ and who Jesus really is and what he stands for. I encourage everyone to read this book. It contains the truth about God's love and the good things he wants to give all of us if we will just receive them As a certified Biblical Counselor, I am using this book with the Bible to help others see who Jesus really is.
God IS a Good God.......2004-11-28
"I have not said...Seek me in vain. I the Lord speak the truth; I declare what is right." Isaiah 45:10
All of the Goodness of God described in the Holy Scriptures of the Bible is for You and me today. Healing, freedom, protection, and prospertiy is for you. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.
Gloria Copeland gently leads her readers from the very basic truth that understanding God's Goodness is the foundation of our faith. As you progress through each chapter Gloria takes the reader through the scriptures where the goodness of God is declared.
It is hard not to get excited when you discover that God has blessings stored up for you, that God has a good place and a good plan for your life. And, it is not too late to get started.
As I read through Gloria's book, I kept asking myself, how do I experience ALL of God's goodness? I was not disappointed to find there is a chapter called "The Key to Heaven's Storehouse."
My friend, God is looking for a "Receiver."
"For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him." 2 Chronicles 16:9
Don't let the word "perfect" throw you off the track. The word that is translated "perfect" in this passage actually means "devoted, faithful, dedicated, loyal and consecrated."
Baby steps. Begin with receiving the gift of salvation. As you learn to trust his goodness, the more he will show his goodness and strength on your behalf.
Get the full picture. Read this book. Let Gloria Copeland minister to you as she leads you through scripture and be challenged to receive the Goodness of God in Your life.
