Excellent resource for selection and maintenance of pond plants.......2007-07-27
I have had a pond for 30+ years. This is one of the best and most detailed resouces that I have come across. It is one of the few that details the type of waterlily corms that each variety has. This is extremely helpful in identifying plants that have spread naturally and are not blooming. Great photographs. Uses both common names and scientific names.
A Water Garden Must.......2007-07-09
I love this book. I am new to the pond world and have found my passion. This book is the water gardener's bible. It is extensive in the coverage of all water plants and gives practical information on their care. It is suitable to ponds in any climate. Also, photos are lovely and are great for plant identification.
Excellent Reference Book!.......2007-05-12
I am having a pond build and needed a comprehensive book of aquatic and bog plants that are suitable for Koi ponds. Everything is there at your fingertips. The color plates are wonderful as well as the descriptions. The only downside, it that I wished the authors would have a listing of the fragrant hardy and tropical waterlilies. Other than that, this book is a beauty!
The best in aquatic information.......2007-05-07
I have found the encyclopedia of water garden plants a valuable resource in planting in my area. It contains a wealth of information for your aquatic plants, and how to's.

Customer Reviews:
Good, but not an encyclopedia.......2003-11-29
This is a book that will guide you in planning, building and maintaining any type of water garden you could imagine. It covers a lot of territory, from container water gardens to formal pools, bog gardens, rills, canals and even dew ponds. It will help you plan lighting, bridges, stepping stones and wet islands. It is especially useful in letting you know what you should be planning ahead for, what aspect you might not have considered that should be factored in. The writer includes a goodly section on plants too, including bog and marginal plants.
Some of the pond construction details are complex and might make you consider getting expert help. Sound foundations for even the most simple rustic bridge require concrete footings, perhaps with reinforcing rods. The book has much to offer in the area of pond maintenance, and in how to propagate and plant water plants - I loved the idea of planting them in old panty hose, rather than planting baskets or burlap - but I thought the section on fish and pond ecology was weak.
While comprehensive and having plenty of useful ideas and caveats, this is not an encyclopedia. Written by a water garden specialist from Britain, the book will make an interesting and attractive addition to your water garden library. It is useful and well illustrated with step-by-step how-to-do-it photographs, but it is nowhere near being an encyclopedia.

This is a good guide for those that are experienced at backcountry winter travel. He shows several routes and peak descents, and rates them according to difficulty. There is some basic information on winter travel, including snow camping and avalanche safety, but you would be wise to study these topics further before attempting any of these routes.

a useful source.......2002-04-06
I found this book to be both interesting and informative and also very useful in writing a crime story. It will definitely give you an idea of how the cops in your story should act at a crime scene and what they should and shouldn't do. The book is also helpful even if your main character isn't a cop at all. I do have a couple of complaints about the book though. For one thing, the author gives way too much detail on some things. Like the fingerprints. The chapters on fingerprints seemed to be aimed more at someone who wants to become a fingerprint expert instead of just writing fiction about them. I found parts of the fingerprint chapters to be extremely boring and I even skipped through a small portion of it. Although some amount of detail can add realism to a story, I really cannot understand why anyone would want to put THAT much detail on fingerprints into a work of fiction. Secondly, the author slips into stories of personal experience several times in the novel. Most of the stories are interesting and could help a writer, but a couple of them just seem to be rambling by the author and really have nothing to add that would help anyone in writing a novel. But despite these complaints, I still found the book to be very useful and, for the most part, very interesting. I would definitely recommend it.
Scene of the Crime: The Howdunit Series.......2001-03-20
A great source of information on the field of Crime Scene Investigation. This books gives a great comprehensive overview of the field and how it may work from small towns to larger cities. A great source to find out if it may be something you would like to get into as a career.
A fingerprint in the Howdunit series.......2001-03-02
Scene of the Crime has lots of facts about fingerprints and examining possible pieces of evidence at a crime scene. I found the sections about identifying remains and what changes the body goes through after death very interesting. I learned a lot of information that will help me in my writing.
On the down side, I did have a hard time focusing on this book. It is very similar to the other books in the Howdunit series, and this is the only reason for a lower rating. However, I do believe that the entire Howdunit Series (I now call it "The Writer's Bible series") could not be complete without this book.
Scene of the Crime may be similar to other books in the series, but it DOES have a lot of knowledge that the other books missed!
Tempted to gloss over.......2000-11-29
Not being a full fledge crime writer, I am always tempted to gloss over scenes that require me to do research in an unfamiluar area. That is what I depend on this series of books to do... fill me in. At three a.m...I just want to know one or two little facts that add realism to a small scene. This book was a very helpful reference guide...who comes first to the scene of a crime. Who ask the questions? Who gathers the clues? You only get so much from watching Murder She Wrote.
Very readable and helpful.......2000-07-11
I'm working on a series of mystery novels and have read most of the books in the "Howdunit" series. They're all more or less helpful, but this is far and away the best. The other authors seemed to think in terms of "I'm going to tell you everything I know in 100 pages," so their books often read like criminology Cliff Notes. Ms. Wingate, on the other hand, is a practicing mystery author and has an excellent sense of what an author needs to know, so the book is not only full of useful information but well-organized and fun to read (if you're not squeamish). She's clear about her areas of expertise and non-expertise: she has years of experience in fingerprinting, so she's very explicit and thorough about that, whereas in other areas (e.g., guns) she just gives a quick overview and refers the reader to the "real" experts for the technical details.
I found the sample forms and reports very helpful as a guide to what investigators are looking for, and how information is communicated from (say) the fiber experts to the police. I've always especially enjoyed Ms. Wingate's novels because of how they depict the personal dynamics WITHIN a police department, which she well knows as an ex-officer. Her anecdotes in this book are not only memorable, and often very funny, but also contribute a great deal to the reader's "feel" for how a police department operates in real life.
In general, I feel this is the most readable and helpful volume of the series. I hope Ms. Wingate revises it periodically -- the technology is constantly changing -- but as a guide to the "feel" of how an investigation is conducted, the book is ageless.
Book Description
The New York Times bestselling authors take a journey into the Cape Light of Christmas past.
As the citizens of Cape Light deck the halls for a Christmas to remember, the curmudgeonly Lillian Warwick has been confined to her bed with pneumonia. Cared for by her daughters, Emily and Jessica, she lets her thoughts drift back to the holiday season of 1955, to the magical time when she first met Oliver Warwick-the dashing man who would become her husband.
Back then, Lillian was beautiful, spirited, and idealistic, and Oliver was a wonderful man who took a real joy in living. As she recounts those romantic early days to her daughters and faces the mistakes she's made, she is reminded of a time when she had much to be grateful for-and of all the special gifts Christmas can bring.
And, to cap off this special, life-altering holiday season, there just might be a winter wedding on the horizon...
Customer Reviews:
Don't Hesitate to Read These Books!.......2007-05-06
I have read several books by Thomas Kinkade of this Cape Light series, including this one. While they are all related, you can pick up a random one and very easily know what is going on as the author will review the characters. I've read them out of sequence but it's been very easy to follow along. This one I especially enjoyed as I loved the flashbacks to Lillian's life. I guess the only thing I don't understand is that Lillian runs away against her parents' wishes to marry Oliver, and in another book in the series, her daughter Jessica marries someone against her wishes. You'd think she'd be more tolerant after what she went through with the estrangement from her parents.
I'd love to live in a town this close where everyone cares about each other and steps in when they are needed. While I'm not overly religious myself, these books have just enough religion in them that you don't feel like you're in church or being preached to. It's just comforting.....don't hesitate to read any of these books.
great book.......2007-01-15
I have read all of Thomas Kinkadebooks. this book is one of the best.
Another Great Tale from quaint Cape Light.......2007-01-09
Each book in this series features a different character in the quaint little New England town just North of Boston called Cape Light. Each story brings those characters to life, so you feel like you've gone back home to visit all your friends and relatives again. This particular story zeroes in on Lillian Warwick, the fiesty, often sarcastic grandmother of Emily, the town's mayor. She isn't your typical "warm, cuddly grandmotherly" type, that's for sure, but in this episode she's fallen down the attic stairs trying to retrieve a box of old photos and letters that are very precious to her. She winds up in the hospital, and needs a cast on one arm and one leg. As she's home recovering from her injuries the holiday season approaches. She does a lot of reminiscing about her youth as she re-reads those old letters and looks at the photos. The story keeps flashing back to the 1950's when she was a young woman, and you gain insight into this character's past. At the same time, you're enjoying all the preparations being made for the current holiday season, getting reacquainted with what's going on in the lives of all your other Cape Light friends. An excellent read, during the holiday season or any other time of the year. If you've read and enjoyed the previous Cape Light stories, you'll enjoy going back for another visit in the pages of this book. The last couple of pages get just a little too sappy for my taste, but otherwise - a truly excellent read!!
Cape Light Series is the best!.......2007-01-09
I love the Cape Light series! This book is great!!!
Delightful Kinkade/Spencer Book.......2007-01-05
Cape Light is a charming, friendly town filled with believable characters who lead normal, yet interesting lives. Although a work of fiction, these stories bring a feeling of home-coming the moment I open one of their books. Great fire-side reading for those of us who like enjoyable, clean, and posative Christian fiction. The romantic attractions of the book's characters makes it a great alternative to all who are tired of the usual romantic fiction, plus the Kinkade/Spencer series offer a bonus of having thought-provoking situations and Christian ethics included to give us something to mull on long after the last page of each novel.

It’s Christmas Eve, and both Melrose and Croc are all alone in the city. They dream of a wonderful Christmas but feel sad when there is no one to share it with. It might have been their loneliest holiday ever, if not for a collision with fate. Could this be the beginning of a magical Christmas, and the start of a cherished friendship?

A book of friendship centered on Christmas.......2006-12-18
I loved this reading this book to my kids. They enjoyed these animals and felt for their plights. Emma Chichester Clark's illustrations were warm and amusing and the incongruity of the cold and snowy winter scenes in the city next to the sandy palm-lined beaches added an odd and interesting touch.

Book Description
Retells the story of the Nativity from an angel's point of view and tells how Earth was made ready for that one special, glorious evening.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent review from ALA's BOOKLIST magazine, Sept 1, 1996.......1996-08-29
Ages 5-8. A lovely blend of words and pictures presents the Christmas story from an angel's point of view. Daring in its attempt to explain the idea of eternity, the book rises above the mediocre as an angel explains how the supernatural has interacted with the real world to bring truth. The angel remembers events on Earth leading up to the Nativity, but he explains that in heaven, where there is no time, it is eternally the first Christmas night. Kiesler's illustrations provide a subtext to this difficult concept. Her pleasing palette, suffused with light, ranges from the golden tones of the desert to the bluish hues of dusk. Doves, found among clouds, as shadows cast in the sand, represented by feathers adrift on the wind, or on a pendant around Mary's neck, constitute a playful motif. A fine choice despite the recent glut of books on the subject of angels. -Shelley Townsend-Hudso
