A complete mess.......2007-07-13
This book is absolutely the worst golf instruction book ever written. It shouldn't be named after Mike Austin, for the takeaway is in complete contradiction to Austin's method. Shauger actually 'borrows' his takeaway from Joe Dante of "The 4 Moves to Winning Golf". Shauger is only 40 years behind Dante in that department.
But the biggest beef with this book is the ridiculous pictures and drawings. They don't in any way shape or form correspond to a golf swing. That's why you see no actual swings of his models analyzed. You do see lots of posed pictures and confusing descriptions.
The diagrams are - to be most charitable - unhelpful.
If you buy this book, buy it from me, I'll let it go very, very cheap. It is a complete waste of money.
Really helps understand some important aspects of the MA swing.......2007-03-10
I have had the peace river tape for about four years. Until I read this book, I never really fully comprehended the throwing the club intricacies. After reading this book and ordering the accompaning DVD, I finally tried out the swing at the driving range last night. I really enjoyed the crack sound of the driver as the ball took off. I am eagerly anticipating taking this swing to the course and further perfecting the swing over the next few months. As for the book, it is a little simplistic in parts and somewhat repeditive. But enough details are there to help with the swing development. I am not too certain that I would have received as much benefit if I had not previously viewed the peace river tape over many times.
The only way to play golf!.......2007-02-09
I've been playing golf for 40 years and as I've gotten into my 50s I've lost distance and the game was becoming difficult. I was about ready to give up the game when I discovered Dan's book. I've been working on the swing as taught in the book for about 5 months now and the difference is amazing. Driver from weak 225 yards to booming 275 in the air. 150 yard club from 6 iron to 9 iron. This swing's release makes accuracy easy. This swing is very easy on the body. His follow-on book "The 21st Century Golf Swing" expands on the swing principles. If you want to get good at this game, get the books and DVDs and spend some time! You will be delighted.
DR SE GREEN.......2007-01-24
Congratultions Mr Shauger.Between this and new book "The Golfswing of The 21st Century",you are revolutionising the golf swing.
I am a medical doctor with an interest in biomechanics and a passion for golf.I am disillusioned with the inconsistency of the traditional golf swing .Even top professional golfers struggle to consistently hit fairways and greens.
When I discovered that Mike Austin hit the ball far further than any man in history,I researched his method. It is unique. Shauger describes this method and has added some amazingly effective refinements.
The book describes this method in great detail. My only criticism is a degree of repetition. This may be justified because of the vast difference to the traditional method.
It has now fallen into place, and a friend( with whom I'm studying this method)and myself are hitting the ball straighter and further than ever.
Long time golfer D Mann - Australia.......2007-01-15
I first read about Mike Austin's ability in a golf tips magazine years ago when he was 68. Whilst he gave a brief summary of action to hit the ball far then, the detail was insufficient to adopt his method. I was delighted to learn of publications about his swing, via the internet and have "How to Kill the Ball-etc. My 70 years of age may be considered too late for swing change but less back strain and more efficient use of the legs and body to produce better trajectory with longer more accurate ball flight is coming from the information detailed in this book. Perhaps the editorial standard could have been better but i believe any purchaser should simply ignore that and concentrate on the instruction given by the author Dan Shauger on the way Mike Austin so effectively hit the golf ball. For those who have never heard of Mike Austin and his unbeaten long distance driving record, this is simply great instruction worth acquiring.

Book Description
Designed to be a true alternative to traditional argument texts, Everything's an Argument takes a fresh and friendly approach to the subject by showing students that argument is everywhere. Everything's an Argument with Readings complements this approach with a uniquely broad range of examples -- from essays to billboards to emails to radio programs -- that help students recognize and respond to the arguments all around them. Andrea Lunsford and John Ruszkiewicz's instruction is fresh, elegant, and jargon-free, emphasizing inclusivity (moving beyond simple pro/con positions), humor, and visual argument to make Everything's an Argument immediately accessible. Students like this book because it helps them see and understand that a world of argument already surrounds them; instructors like it because it helps students construct their own arguments about that world.

Book Description
Everything's an Argument's unique, student-centered approach to teaching argument has made it the best-selling brief argument text on the market. The book's engaging, informal style shows students first how to read and analyze a wide range of argumentative texts -- verbal and visual, scholarly and "real world" -- and then how to use what they learn to write their own arguments.

Everything's an argument.......2007-09-30
Everything's an Argument was shipped in good condition as described. Unfortunately, I had need the Everything's an Argument with Readings. So just as a suggestion...please make sure the correct book is ordered....I did order the correct book and the amount of the wrong book purchased, was refunded to me. Thank you.
What junk.......2007-03-21
This is quite possibly the worst book I've ever read in my life. Pointless repetition page after page. This book justifies why some people unfortunately despise reading. In this case, it was like pulling teeth to read this trash. We all KNOW what this book tries to tell us. However, Lunsford feels the need to take a sentence, and expand it into 300000 more saying the exact same thing. Please do not buy this.
A Solid Resource for Persuasive Writing.......2005-12-31
This book is designed to be an undergraduate-level textbook in persuasive writing. I read the book to see if I wanted to use it as a textbook for one of my classes. I think it's a very good textbook.
Part One introduces the types of arguments and various forums, as well as introducing the importance of context in persuasive writing -- it really matters who you are speaking to.
Part two covers the specific kinds of arguments in depth - arguments from the heart (humor and emotion), and those based on character, values, and facts.
Part Three is the meatiest portion of the book, addressing the structure of arguments, such as Toulmin analysis, arguments of definition, evaluation, cause, proposals, and humor.
Part Four deals with the style used in perfecting one's argument in written language, visual presentation, and spoken performances.
Part Five is shorter and discusses issues related to evidence, fallacious arguments (such as ad hominem attacks or slippery slope arguments), and intellectual property issues.
I like the clear writing style of the book and the informative explanation. The best part of the book, however, is the excerpts and examples. They are modern, relevant, engaging, and the students will enjoy reading and analyzing them. The chapter on Fallacies of Argument was also very strong, as well as the issues related to evidence.
Some things I did not like were the review questions at the end, some of which seemed ambiguous and overly time-consuming. Also, though the title is catchy, I do not accept that EVERYTHING is an argument -- the "Buckle-up" sign on the highway is just a sign.
That being said, I think EAA can be used as an effective textbook if certain sections are used instead of the entire book. Also, more in-depth analysis of Toulmin arguments might be examined in other sources, as it is treated somewhat lightly here. Overall, however, it can be a strong resource to help teach persuasive writing.
I wouldn't if I were you..........2005-12-16
This book is irritatingly repetitive and needlessly jargon-packed. The essays are too shortly excerpted, and often uninteresting. If you wish to teach or learn only that the things we say, write, and/or do convey meaning, societal training, and possibly false assumptions on our part, this is your book (especially if you like very floppy bright red square things). If you would like to teach or learn more than that fundamental Toulmin-based premise, look somewhere else.
A short book that tells students something they need to know.......2005-11-23
I have taught argumentative writing for 10 years, and this book is among those I have required at various times. Contrary to the "big deal" attitude some students take toward learning that all communication is argumentative, understanding the pervasive use and misuse of argument strategy is extremely important. Students need to learn, for example, that there is no logical connection between needing a break and eating at a particular fast-food restaurant. More importantly, they need to learn that there is no logical connection between a person's military history or his thoughts on whom other people should sleep with and his ability to lead a nation. The overwhelming use of poor argument in mass media has led to a culture of unsound reasoners and college students who cannot even identify the claims and reasons in their own arguments (not to mention that they, apparently, can't spell argument or Toulmin or avoid sentence fragments). This text attempts to address both the practical concerns that students face and the higher-order philosophy that was once the provence of postsecondary education. It covers both Aristolelean deductive argument and Toulminic inductive argument, yet it is concise and clearly written. While it does not cover everything, its conciseness and clarity free class time for discussions of the topics it does not cover, such as understanding the variety of discourse communities represented in the academy and how to adopt different argumentative strategies to establish ethos within those communities. It is extremely difficult to take students who cannot write a simple declarative English sentence and in 32 weeks of instruction move them to a point from which they can negotiate the labryntian discourse paths required for academic, professional, and personal success. Texts such as this one help.

Great for Critical Thinking Course.......2003-01-08
I teach Critical Thinking at a junior college in central California. This is the only text for my class. I have chosen it over several others for the following reasons: ease of use, detailed explanations, MLA and APA format guidelines, and excellent readings that give both sides to current topics.
A blend of Schemes, Tropes and Toulmin.......2001-02-05
As a Freshman Composition Teacher, I found it hard to explain the idea of argument using mainstream texts such as Axlerod and Cooper's St. Martin's Guide. The second edition of Everything's an Argument provides an accessible way to illustrate classical rhetorical ideas to the modern student. Lunsford, Ruszkiewicz and Walters provide a readable breakdown or Aristotle's concepts of Ethos, Pathos, Logos and Audience. Toulmin is also used nicely. The second edition also provides readings which are contemporary in nature and on intersting topics. There are the traditional readings on Title IX, Language and Identity, Free Speech and Euthanasia for the more conservative course instructors. In addition, this book ellaborates on topics which I will be excited to introduce into my course next semester: Technology's involvement in Conception and Birth, Intellectual Property rights, Genetics and Privacy Loss. While the content of the book is exactly what I've been searching for, I find the physical book design also appealing. The cover design and visual elements will demand attention from my students. While the compact paperback design will not break anyone's back, it has me a little concerned about how well it will hold up over a semester. This text should be a definite consideration for anyone who has been wondering for years how to work audience, argument, critical thinking and style into their course. My favorite part is the chapter on tropes and schemes.

Excellent for beginning teachers.......2007-09-16
This is an awesome resource for new and student teachers. Very simple, basic and claerly written.
Excellent Resource.......2007-05-30
Full of ideas I don't have time to implement. Regie Routman is wonderful.
Great Resource!.......2007-03-18
If you want to become a better teacher of writing, then this book is for you! I am a huge follower of Regie Routman's teaching methods, and I think this is her best book yet. The greatest part of this guide are the step-by-step lesson plan suggestions, each of which guide you over a 5-day period of time. The lessons cover a variety of genres and can be adapted for any grade level. The DVD shows Regie in action, conferencing with students. If you're serious about wanting to change the way you teach writing, read this book!
Content, NOT conventions!.......2006-07-13
I purchased this book a few months ago as a textbook requirement for a graduate course I took. Little did I know that I would end up dog-earing practically every page! Regie's approach to teaching writing resounded with me on so many levels. As a kindergarten teacher coming off her first year in a classroom, I had felt a nagging dissatisfaction with our school's packaged writing "program", but really didn't have the professional chops to move from yammering at my kids about sentence conventions and "three sentences, three capitals, three periods!" to teaching the writing process in a joyful way. This book was an awakening, because it showed me how to do just that. If you're a teacher of just about any grade level, and you're uneasy about producing a classroom full of automatons who write in lockstep, BUY THIS BOOK. Yes, it is a textbook, but it doesn't read like one. Nigh unto every page is flooded with examples from Regie's own teaching experiences, and-- as if that weren't good enough-- the appendices give you the lessons Regie taught WORD-FOR-WORD so you can model her practices in your classroom! I cannot speak highly enough of this book. I wish more teachers had the opportunity to learn from Regie and realize that writing CAN be a joyful experience!
Writing Essentials.......2006-07-10
This book is an outstanding resource for K-5 teachers who want to bring joy and student engagement to classroom writing. It is a simple, straight forward approach that is extremely teacher friendly. Every elementary school teacher will benefit from reading it...and watching the DVD that accompanies the book.
