Book Description
Barry Reynolds and John Berryman use a seasonal approach to teach you everything you need to know to catch northerns, tigers, and muskies on a fly. There are chapters on pike gear, favorite pike flies, fishing for trophy pike, and planning a trip to Canada, the pike angler's mecca. Other chapters deal with flyfishing for pike in rivers, special tactics for tigers, and state-by-state pike fishing information, including top spots, state records, and stocking facts.

Great Book.......2006-09-06
I found this book extremely useful. I moved to Minnesota (land of pike) from New Mexico (land of trout). Very few people in Minnesota fly fish, and most that do fish only for trout. Because of this, it is very hard to find people to teach you what you will need to catch pike/muskie on the fly. I combined this book with one evening with a guide, and I am now catching pike. When I'm not catching fish, I now have a good understanding about what I should try changing. I'd be lost without this book. It has saved me years of trial and error.
After reading the book, I started taking a thermometer out with me while I fish. When the water is above about 70, I know my odds of catching a pike while wading are low so I switch to bass.
When you catch your first pike, you'll be hooked. Mine was a small pike, but it was larger than the biggest trout I ever caught.
Muskie or Musky - great fish on the fly rod.......2003-12-06
If you are interested in catching a big musky (or muskies), or any pike, on a fly rod or other tackle this book is an excellent sourse of useful information on the fish, how to hunt them, what equipment you need and how to rig. Very worthwhile reading before a day on the water with a good guide.
Think like a predator!.......2001-04-30
I had the privilege to work on a TV show called HIGH COUNTRY OUTDOORS with Barry the same year he and John wrote PIKE ON THE FLY. I devoured this book and still have it on my shelf in close reach. The techniques aren't just old hackneyed phrases but are true tested tactics gleaned from Barry's experiences. I know of no better way to understand the ways of flyfishing for pike and other large gamefish than to read this book over and over. I refer to it for much more than just pike and muskie, its a great handbook to have when I want to think like a fish.
Pike on the Fly.......2000-03-26
I read this book then went to Canada fly fishing for Pike. I found out that Barry Reynolds knows fly fishing for Pike. Take the advice of this book and you WILL catch Pike, lots of Pike on a fly rod.
fair to middlin.......1999-05-20
Compared to Murray's Flyfishing for Smallmouth Bass, expect vague generalizations without enough specifics to sink your teeth into.

Great.......2007-01-27
Superb book. The author is the master of spring creek and tail waters and explains all that very well to the reader. Pictures are fantastic.
Every fly fisherman, experienced or novice, needs to have this book.
A Missed Opportunity.......2004-04-20
Within the corpus of technical American fly-fishing literature an innovative and influential text on the finer aspects of flat-water trout angling eludes us. For years I anxiously awaited "Spring Creeks" and had automatically incucted Lawson into the "KLM club" (i.e. the best American fly-fishing authors to date: Kreh, LaFontaine, and Marinaro). Unfortunately, this book is a missed opportunity and certianly does not deserve a "must read" distinction.
Why have I elected to write such a harsh criticism of Lawson's "Spring Creeks?" Foremost, Lawson has been working on this project for a long time (10 or more years I belive), which provides ample opportunity for critical and innovative research. Additionally, he has the best labratory imaginable--Harriman State Park on the Henry's Fork. These two factors, I argue, should have resulted in something new and profound (e.g. fly design theory pertaining to flat-water trout, technical "how to" features that expand upon current tactics, unique insect and trout behavior, and more) but "Spring Creeks" is largely anecdotal and undisciplined; more importantly, it does not expand upon the previous contributions provided by other authors. A beautiful book it is, a fine addition to any angling library--sure, but a text that consumes one's free time--no.
A must read--carefully--for trout anglers.......2004-01-06
Except for the last 1/4th, whichis more directly instructional, Lawson writes in a casual conversational style that must be read carefully to pick up many little bits of information and insight. He credits others for all his know-how, but I watched him fish a difficult stretch in front of his shop. He and Will Godfrey were the only ones who caught anything that afternoon. He knows western spring creeks as few others do. One minor criticism--he mentions midwestern spring creeks only in passing. (He also ignores his own advice concerning red shirts.)
Book Description
In this classic account of the Revolutionary War experiences of the North Carolina Continentals, Hugh F. Rankin traces the events leading to war in North Carolina and follows all the campaigns and battles in which the North Carolina Continentals took part--Brandywine, Germantown, Charleston, Savannah, Camden, Eutaw Springs, and others. He also provides descriptions of almost all of the significant personalities in the Continental Army. Originally published in 1971, this new edition contains a foreword by Lawrence Babits, introducing the book to a new generation of scholars and general readers interested in the Revolutionary War.
Customer Reviews:
Great reference and point of departure.......2006-09-25
This is a great history of NC & the Revolutionary War, not just the NC Continentasls as the tilte implies. Its valuable for researchers of the era in NC, as Rankin's work is based solidly in the archives. It should be noted however that this is a MILITARY study almost exclusively, and has very little to say about the social aspects of the war in NC.

Like fishing with a seasoned expert at your elbow.......2002-05-01
Unlike most guidebooks, this book defines an approach to the Driftless Area spring creeks. Streams change, and the typical guidebooks are soon obsolete--but not this one. It devotes two full chapters to understandng and exploring the resource. The excellent discussion on tackle, leader design, and two-fly rigs is overshadowed by an abundance of innovative and proven fly patterns for year-round angling. Mueller's expertise is evident throughout, but his writing remains clear, compact, and full of "good things to know"--like the spring creeks themselves.
Right on the money.......2000-04-10
This book is packed with a lot of useful and practical information for the flyfisherman. Not only are you given tips on where to go, but what flies to use as well-if you are unfamilar with a pattern it gives the instructions and materials needed to tie the fly. Ross has also included a general hatch chart for the driftlees area. The book is easy to read and moves at a good rate. It contains several color plates of flies as well as fish and scenery. Another nice aspect of the book is that the color plates of flies are shown after reading about them- I believe that the book is broken into 4 or 5 sections like this. I bought this book to help out my summer vacation- I will be fishing in several areas that were written about. This is one of the better "guide books" that I own. It contains good information on the "how', "what", "when", "where" and "why".
Quite a helpful little book.......2000-04-10
Ross Mueller's Fly Fishing Midwestern Spring Creeks is an excellent introduction to the unique terrain and fishing of Southwestern Wisconsin, Southeastern Minn, and Northeastern Iowa. The driftless area is unique in the United States, and the fishing for spooky brown trout it provides is exciting and rewarding. Mueller describes why the area is unique, what sorts of insects are to be found in its waters, what kind of fish to expect, and how and when to go after them. The book is divided into seasonal sections with beautiful photographs and excellent fly selection suggestions. Mueller's spent quite a lot of time on driftless area creeks and his love for the area shows in his ebullient praise for its natural beauty. Not only should you buy this book, but you should do your best to travel to this fantastically beautiful area and see for yourself. Fishing the coulee country is the most peaceful and solitary things I've done in the last few years. This book helped me gain my bearings.

New York publisher and writer Nick Lyons records in diary-like detail an angler's dream come true: a month-long invitation to fish a private spring-fed creek in the Rocky Mountains. The trout are large but wary, and each day represents an opportunity for Lyons to learn more about fly-fishing, the natural world, and himself. Spring Creek is an eloquent meditation on one man's pursuit of his passion.

Dairy of a trout fisherman.......2005-08-06
Start to finish, a wonderful book. The author recounts his adventures (and in some cases, misadventures) from one month on a private trout stream. The epic "battle" with the snake alone is worth the price of the book. Any rabid fisherman should have this book in their library.
Nick Lyons' best work........2002-06-06
For me, the premier flyfishing book. It's the only fishing story I'll read every year.
If they had a hardcover version, I'd buy it.
One of the best fly fishing titles ever!.......1998-10-24
I was a fan of Nick Lyons' after reading "Bright Rivers" and this book just solidified that. Although not a "how to" book on fishing spring creeks, it does offer some instruction in the form of the author's experiences. Lyons' books are similar to Gierach... well written, funny, witty with a little self deprecating humor, and A LOT of fishing! Some of his experiences on this creek are nothing short of amazing. A definite classic.

I laughed, I cried, then I laughed some more until I cried. Then I read it again and enjoyed it just as much the second time. The fun doesn't in any way diminish the inspirational value of the book, but rather enhances it. I have read a number of humorous inspirational books, but none better than this one.

Adventures Down Under Series.......2000-05-29
Right at the beginning, these books capture your attention and keep it: from the father's mistaken arrest and deportation to Australia, to his family following on another ship, to countless adventures as the McWaid family searches for their escaped father and unknown grandfather. Patrick, the main character, is a courageous boy who learns to trust God through all the uncertainty of his new life. I picked this series up for the church library, and then decided to read the first one so I would know how they were. I found myself running out to get the other books in the series, just to find out what happened next, and now I have books 1 through 8! This series entertains, as well as teaches its readers to trust God through both the good and bad times.

Nascar .......2007-08-25
Great book and very uplifting. I purchased 15 copies for my group because I was interested in the Pit Crew stories. They are very motivational.
A good book, but something was missing.......2007-07-23
If you want to read heart-warming stories about the greatest sport ever, then get this book. There are stories in there by drivers like Ned Jarrett and Richard Petty that are really cool. For some reason however, I was expecting more from this book. Don't get me wrong, this is a great book and you should certainly get it, but for some reason I was expecting something extra. A good overall book however. Get it.
I stand corrected.......2005-11-04
This book is a non-stop, top-speed, edge of your seat, adrenaline rush of grieving widows, disfiguring injuries, and terminal illness. When my eldest boy R.J. bought me this book for America Day (a MacAllister family holiday tradition) I nearly kicked his teeth in. But lucky for R.J., september 11th fell on a sunday this year, so didn't have my steel-toes on, just my regular soft-toed church boots. Those boots are soft as an angels cheek, and as i proved last mothers day, couldn't knock a baby tooth from a infants mouth. Needless to say, when i saw that book i assumed my boy was callin me a queer, and challengin' my claim as man of the house, much like his older brother Cody had done three years prior. Turns out i was mistaken, and after i got to pokin' around in this book i discovered a treasure trove of high-octane life lessons from Dale Jarret, Monte Dutton, and countless other heros of the golden loop. If i had known what a joy this book would be it could have saved me a $300 hospital bill, and R.J. about 20 pints of blood. It was Bobby Labontes tale of overcoming adversity that inspired me to sue the WWF for their role in puttin my boy Cody in a wheelchair, via Rick Flair's instructional pamphlet, "How to Apply a Figure-Four Leglock, the Rick Flair way". That pamphlet is a menace that should be stricken from the Holcombe County public library. Had i not been reading it that fateful day when Cody decided he was a bigger man than me, he might still be walking today. All in all i give this book 8 thumbs up, 10 American Flags, and 4 hell yeahs!
Profundity beyond imagination.......2005-10-27
A wonderful, touching book, at least once I got past the tricky words snuck into this book by some snooty, Merlot-sipping elitist in a New York City publishing house (e.g., "concentrating," "motivation," and "rooster"). Also, I couldn't help but notice one highly glaring typo: For some reason, "Git-r-dun" is consistently misspelled as "Get it done." Guess they don't teach spelling in those fancy Ivy League schools, huh?
best nascar book.......2005-04-18
I read this book because I am a huge NASCAR fan and I thought it would suit me. This book includes exactly what the cover says it does, inspirational stories of courage, speed, and overcoming adversity. If you aren't usually a NASCAR fan, I think you can still enjoy this book. I also think you can enjoy this book if you aren't a common Chicken Soup reader. While watching coverage of races and reading the stories on the NASCAR drivers, you really only get to see the racing side of the drivers, but in this book, you get to know what some of the drivers are really like. For instance, some wouldn't have thought Gordon would be so charitable and take his show car to a kids' school, who was going blind and take him on a ride. Throughout this book, you hear from nearly every perspective in NASCAR, whether it be the drivers, fans, commentators, reporters, or even people who work in the garages. Something unique about this edition to the Chicken Soups' are the color images inserted in the middle of the book. I thought these were a bit out of place for this books theme because they were mostly images of drivers in victory lane or racing. This book will make you proud to be a NASCAR fan if you are one, and if you aren't, then you will probably begin tuning into the races on Sundays. My favorite story was the one where an older racer by the name of Joe Weaver takes one more lap around the track years after a highway accident left him rehabilitating in a nursing home and stopped him from racing. It was truly an inspirational story. I highly suggest this book to anyone and everyone, it is a great read.

Book Description
Traditionally, Old Philadelphians keep a low profile. They associate with one another and leave life as discreetly as they have lived it. So Philly Prep English teacher Amanda Pepper, who thinks her only current problems are keeping her well-meaning family from hijacking her wedding, is understandably stunned to discover a perfect specimen of the species dying at the foot of the school’s marble staircase.
It is anybody’s guess what led to Tomas Severin’s apparent fall and, indeed, why he was in the building in the first place. More questions arise when Amanda enters her otherwise empty classroom and finds a take-out cup of herbal tea laced with the party drug her students call roofies. Why would a middle-aged Philadelphian have a date-rape drug in his tea? Why does he have Amanda’s name scribbled in his pocket notebook?
Hired by a member of the Severin family household, Amanda and her fiancé, C. K. Mackenzie, realize that many people felt their lives would improve if Tom’s life ended–making it seemingly impossible to determine who’d been harassing Severin with threatening phone calls. Tom Severin leaves behind angry ex-wives, one recently dropped fiancée, and the current (about to be exed) Mrs. Tomas Severin. As secrets are unearthed, and cruelties old and new revealed, it’s apparent that The End of Tom is just the beginning of the grief he caused.
To thousands of adoring Amanda Pepper fans, Gillian Roberts’s new mystery offers unmitigated delight. A note to the uninitiated: There could be no better time for you to meet “the Dorothy Parker of mystery writers . . . giving more wit per page than most writers give per book” (Nancy Pickard).

Time Wounds All Heels and Heals All Wounds.......2005-02-12
Till the End of Tom reminded me of Agatha Christie's classic story, Murder on the Orient Express, in its plot built around the ultimate-victim-you-love-to-hate. But the story offers much more. Ms. Roberts also comments in fundamental ways about what a family is (and should be), sexual stereotypes, and wedding traditions. That combination made this book a definite thinking person's mystery . . . with the mystery, though rewarding, being of secondary importance to the overall relationships of the characters.
Amanda Pepper is frazzled by her impending marriage, her family's insistence on her enthusiastic involvement in the plans, papers to grade, and her need to work part-time to make a little money as a clerk in the private detective agency where her fiancé is working.
It's not surprising then that she chose to duck out of another boring assembly led by the school's headmaster where she teaches. When she does, she steps into trouble!
Here's the book's great opening:
"My mind was on Steinbeck; my foot was on a hand.
"I screamed."
Amanda finds herself drawn into investigating a mysterious accident in her school after she steps on the injured man's hand. The clues are eclectic and puzzling. How did a well-to-do society fixture come to visit Amanda's classroom? Who spiked his tea? Who was making threatening calls to him? What is the danger presented by the victim's mother's young fiancé? Who did it?
With so much to praise, why didn't I think this was a five-star book? Well, you'll have to read the book to know . . . but Ms. Roberts makes all sorts of "out-in-left-field" connections and coincidences that undercut what is otherwise a most entertaining story. The story would have been more than enjoyable without those ridiculous stretches. I would have preferred they not been included. Perhaps you will decide to read the book and decide for yourself about whether the plot overreaches or not. In addition, the plot builds around ignoring the possible roles of several characters until near the end. I found this to be a most unrealistic and unfortunate way to develop the story.
I love the Amanda Pepper series and was not disappointed.......2005-01-10
by this latest in the series. I started the series in the middle and have been reading the books in no particular order, but it really doesn't matter.
All of the books in this series use the motif of commenting on a theme in a classic book (earlier books have used Romeo and Juliet and Jane Eyre, for example). This one uses East of Eden, Steinbeck's story of a parent's preference for one child. That theme is developed in this story line.
The book begins with a punch, as Philly Prep English teacher- and "detective" -- Amanda Pepper trips over a badly injured man lying at the foot of marble steps inside the school. Everyone else is at an assembly; she calls the police and sends the school secretary to tell the principal to keep the students in the assembly hall. The injured man quickly dies and the police are looking around for suspects. One of her favorite students seems to be a possibility, and if that weren't enough to get Amanda interested in the case, she and her former homicide detective and now part-time PI fiance CK are asked to see if another person might be the culprit. The dead man turns out to be a wealthy Philadelphian, and Amanda is drawn into the world of Philly high society. In the meantime, she's got this wedding in 3 months, and various relatives and friends are trying to get her to make decisions about the wedding -- like where to hold it.
What I didn't like about the book is the last two pages, which deals with Amanda's wedding plans. I hope Gillian Roberts changes her mind before the next book!
entertaining academic mystery .......2004-11-01
When Philly Prep teacher Amanda Pepper ducks out of the headmaster's speech in the auditorium she finds a man lying comatose on the bottom of the marble stairs. He dies en route to the hospital; Amanda thinks he was murdered because he fell backwards and has an injury to his cheek. She learns that the victim, Tomas Severin, wanted to hire her services as a private detective to investigate threatening phone calls he was getting.
Later, Amanda finds a cup of tea in her office that she assumes was Tomas' drink. She gives it to the police to see if there was anything in it. It turns out that somebody put a date rape drug in the tea. Not too much later, Amanda and her fiancée are hired by the social secretary to Tomas's mother Ingrid to find out whether her employer's fiancée who is forty-six years younger than his future bride had something to do with the homicide. Amanda feels needs to solve the case fast because Tomas's son Zach, Amanda's favorite student, confesses to killing his father. Amanda wants to clear Zach by finding out how Tomas really died because she doesn't believe her pupil committed patricide.
TILL THE END OF TOM is a very entertaining academic mystery due in large part to the heroine's trying to work two jobs and plan her wedding. This leads to some very numerous scenes and will have any reader who planned their own wedding chuckling out loud. Gillian Roberts is a talented writer whose clever plotting and excellent characterizations make TILL THE END OF TOM a very erudite mystery.
