Book Description
The perfect training supplement for martial artists, The Martial Artist's Book of Yoga shows how the ancient practice of yoga was the genesis of all martial arts. It clearly illustrates how specific yoga poses can directly improve one's martial arts abilities, with asanas that the reader can easily incorporate into a balanced workout.
Designed for those practicing any martial art including judo, karate, kung fu, tae kwon do, jujitsu, and hapkido, the book explains the training needs and challenges of the various universal techniques: kicks, strikes, blocks, throws, falls, joint locks, and grappling. Then the author identifies the underlying fundamentals necessary to advance one's skill in each area and presents a series of yoga poses specially selected to make those improvements - from increased flexibility and strength to better body control and balance.

Written by a martial artist for martial artists.......2005-11-16
Lily Chou is uniquely qualified to give us a guide to yoga specifically for martial arts. Her ten years of experience include cross training in Yongmudo, Taekwondo and over four years in Hatha yoga, coupled with her skills in editing numerous health and fitness books and participation in the UC Martial Arts Program is an exceptional combination for an author. Lily has divided her book not by the typical yoga poses, but by their application to specific martial arts skills. Thus, we find chapters on grappling and throws with the poses she and her co-author Kathe Rothacher (a yoga practitioner for over 30 years) see as most appropriate. The book is well illustrated with photographs of every position (including martial arts examples) and cross-referenced to other pertinent sections so that the reader may quickly move back and forth from the benefits of yoga to the details of each pose. While hardcore yoga practitioners may find the book too elementary, this is exactly the kind of guide practicing martial artists need to get them motivated to attempt something that is both beneficial and out of our comfort zone.
A creative blending of concepts.......2005-10-04
While I'm not convinced by these materials that yoga was the genesis of all martial arts, the author does make a compelling case that yoga techniques can complement martial training. The routines described herein can help improve body control, balance, flexibility, and strength. Not surprising since many of these techniques are already found in most traditional martial arts training.
There's really nothing earth shattering in here, but there is some good stuff that can help you become a better martial artist if you add it to your daily routine. It's pretty well written and easy to follow, an interesting and creative blending of concepts not generally associated with each other. On the other hand, I certainly would not consider it a "must read" by any means.

Exhaustive, painstaking work on the strange and anomalous in the U.S........2006-04-17
This book, originally released in 1983, was revised in 2001 (which is the volume I am reviewing) and it's a great one. Coleman explores some of the usual cryptozoological anomalies (Bigfoot, lake monsters, et al.), but he also profiles other anomalous happenings, such as the Dover Demon, the Jersey Devil, the "Little Men of Kelly," black panthers, African lions in the U.S., strange kangaroos and "devil monkeys" and other strange or out-of-place animals and anomalies. Strange weather is also profiled, such as the "raining fish" and "raining frogs" phenomenons. Coleman also gives his own thoughts to all anomalous happenings in America and even discusses strange names and coincidences related to the strange and unusual. There are lists at the end of the book which profile different areas of the U.S. and the strange happenings that occur in those areas. This book is recommended highly to all who are interested in the unusual, not just for the cryptozoological information, but for all strange anomalous happenings in the U.S.
Coleman's theories are based on the .......2006-04-16
Wow, what a disappointment! I was really anxious to read this book after all the hype. I guess my scientific background grounded me in science because Loren has fallen into the same pitfalls as nearly every other cryptozoo-geek. Yes, it's true. The scientific method is founded upon principles such as Occam's Razor (the explanation of any phenomenon should make as few assumptions as possible, eliminating those that make no difference in the observable predictions of the explanatory hypothesis or theory...Wikipedia). From my reading thus far, it seems that Loren Coleman, Christopher Murphy, and absolutely Mark Hall seem to follow a convoluted version of Chatton's Anti-Razor. The question is, obviously, why? Here are a few glaring examples concerning Loren's conclusions in this book:
1. The Dover Demon: Loren asserts that he knows Moose and that the demon couldn't have been a misidentified young moose on several accounts. One of his assertions is that Moose are not nocturnal. Then, why are there night-danger road signs in Ontario, Canada? It could have been possible that a couple pot smoking teens may have misidentified a young moose as an oddity. Or is that too simple of an explanation? One of my friends in college, while on a similar "trip" as those teens, thought the pop-up head lights on a nearby car were ghosts and proceeded to scream. Maybe he too saw the Dover demon.
2. Giant catfish aren't a cryptozoo species. They are not unknown today and we do not have to make weird correlations between their existence and lake monsters. Loren made no mention of the wels catfish...what a shame. Ever hear of the wels catfish in the UK? Anyhow, back in the states, the Flathead catfish are serious predators and choose live bait over that stinky dough [...] that most amateurs fish with. Even smallish 30 pounders have been found to have ducklings, large fish, and yes even squirrels in their stomach upon dissection or as we call it gutting. They don't have to be 200 or 2000 pounds to be a serious predator. If you wanna go big, bad, and ugly then consider the gar families.
3. The chapter on Phantom Panthers is absolutely bullet-ridden with respect to Occam's Razor. Loren should research the jaguarundi. These cats have been killed in rural NC, SC, and FL by hunters. The home range of the jaguarundi extends from northern Mexico into Texas and Florida. Could it explain variations in color noted by observers? Yet again, this is the simplest and most easily digested explanation but it eludes Loren and never makes it in the "mention" column.
4. Loren asserts that Mountain lions do not prowl during the day. Wow! Yet again, he seems to twist biological behavior patterns to match some far-fetched explanation based upon the fossil record of long ago. First, having spent much of my life in the West, I have seen quite a bit of mountain lion activity during the day. Second, consider the attacks on those unfortunate joggers, mountain bikers, and hikers by mountain lions in recent years. Do you think that all these people were doing their thing in the middle of the night?
Overall, if you want to throw the brain in neutral and feel tingly like a teen at a campfire as ghost stories are being told, then by all means this is the book for you. If you want logic, plausible conclusions, and a little scientific extensions into the world of the "truly" unexplained then look elsewhere.
An Old Friend Reissued.......2006-03-10
This must rate as Loren's signature Fortean work. I just bought the new hardbound copy to insure it's continued residence in my library. I was going to send my old paperback to one of my children, until I noticed that it is heavily annotated and highlighted! In short it is an essential book for any Fortean and along with "Curious Encounters", it placed Coleman into the top ranks of modern Forteans.
This is what turned me on to T-birds!.......2006-02-07
About 5 or 6 years ago, I ordered this book, the first of a good number of Loren's books that I've ordered. When I read the section about Thunderbirds and the experience of the Lowe family, I was hooked on T-birds from then on out, in spite of the Bigfoot junkie that I am. And since Texas seems to be a hot spot for T-birds (not to mention pterosaur sightings too), I started researching them and engaged in lengthy e-mail correspondence with a couple of actual witnesses. I also struck up a friendship with another of my now favorite authors, novelist and crypto researchers D. L. Tanner (who incidentally is one of Loren's biggest fans), whose first novel was about that very thing, and learned a tremendous amount of T-bird history from him as well.
Loren is one of the most readable writers in the world--you don't have to have a degree in zoology to absorb and enjoy the information he offers in every book he writes. MA-R is one of his best endeavors, and I recommend it even to those who are not into crpyptozoology. This book may well get you hooked on it.
Thanks for all the Strangeness!.......2005-10-25
I've read other book by Mr. Coleman, and if nothing else they've all been helpful tools in researching cryptozoology and the unexplained. This book is no different. It contains excellent reviews and overviews of many sightings of mysterious, unexplainable creatures, and strange phenomena around the country. As a resource for one interested in Forteana this book is worth it's weight.
I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone interested in Fortean mysteries. It is well written, with Loren's trademark light humor and forthrightness. Loren even helps the reader understand what many writers and researchers interested in the paranormal, UFOlogy and Cryptozoology, have to put up with.
Not everyone takes this stuff seriously, so to take it seriously and write about it requires resolve, and a certain amount of courage. Writers of books like these inevitably encounter their share of cinicism and jesting at the hands of the media and others they may encounter.
Loren helps us to understand the writers point of view, and clarifies the notion of "belief" in the unexplained. It's more about open-mindedness and willingness to accept the possibility that there is something going on that could be causing these strange experiences and creature sightings. It's nothing to be ashamed of, and in fact, something that we can have great fun with while we explore the mysteries of our world, for there are many.
The last portion of this book contains listings of mysterious happenings around the country, giving the reader an opportunity to find strange sidetracks in their area to explore.
Mysterious America will remain on my shelf as a reference for my own research and entertainment.
Book Description
From AAFES to Zeller's, this is the only book you will ever need to identify and value your retailer exclusive Barbie dolls! This book includes all retail exclusives since 1972, when Montgomery Ward issued their own 'original Barbie' on the occasion of their 100th anniversary. As of 2004 over 90 retailers have sold a Barbie exclusive at one time. This exhaustive book includes all of those retailers and their treasures, and many dolls feature close-ups for ease in identification. Over 500 dolls not shown in previous editions have been added to this volume, along with 60 new fashions. Fans of Barbie doll's little sister Kelly will be delighted to learn that over 100 Kelly dolls have been added, making this a great Kelly reference as well. Some of the latest retailers to join the exclusives bandwagon include Big Lots, Dollar General, Hard Rock Cafe, Mary Kay Cosmetics, the Mattel Store, See's Candies, and Walgreen's. It's author Augustyniak's best work yet.

What an excellent resource. We had three generations reading every page about their favorite Barbies and we all learned so much.
Collector's Encyclopedia Of Barbie Doll Exclusives: Identification & Values 1972-2004 .......2007-01-16
The Collector's Encyclopedia Of Barbie Doll Exclusives is a great reference to the value of different types of Barbies. I was a little dissapointed that the Holiday Barbies and Bob Mackie Barbies are not listed in the book but I was pleased, otherwise. I would recommend this book.
Collector's Encyp. of Barbie Doll Exclusivies/1972-2004.......2006-07-20
Having read the other collector's encyclopedia's written by this author, this one is also a beautiful collection of the Barbie doll's one may want to know about and/or collect. The pictures are well done and the descriptions very clear and understandable. At a book store, before even my first purchase of these books, I skimmed other books stating they had what I was looking for, but none compared to Michael J. Augustyniak's. Through his books, I have been able to purchase Barbies at what I know is a fair and good price for my own collection. Very good resource book. Highly recommended.

"Exactly what I was looking for!".......2003-10-07
I have looked at many many books trying to find one that would help me to easily identify Barbie. Well folks, this is it! The pictures are wonderful, brightly colored and large enough to see detail. This is a "Must Have" book if you are a collector. (or if you buy used dolls to make up an OOAK) Well worth the money spent. I highly recommend!
Wonderful Encyclopedia for Barbie collectors!.......2001-10-24
This book is the most wonderful Encyclopedia about Barbie dolls. It has so many dolls listed with descriptions, prices and pics of the dolls in their boxes. Many pink boxes, OOAK Mattel dolls and collectibles. Pictures are nice, they are from the doll in box, and there are closes on some dolls.
If you need information on Pink Boxes, this book is the best!!! There are a new version 'cos this is not updated, the dolls showed ends on 1999. There are no 2000 dolls or 2001. But there are a second edition, so search for the new edition!
Good Book.......2001-03-30
This book was very informative regarding dolls and values. I wish it would have had more of the "Special Edition" models and values though. Lots of pictures that are a good size for viewing and easy to see.
This book is put together very well, the index pages in the back make it easy to locate the dolls that you are looking for. I am a beginner and this book was very helpful for me to put a value on the dolls that I already have.
And I Thought I Knew Barbie!.......2000-04-06
I just received the COLLECTOR'S ENCYCLOPEDIA of BARBIE by JMichael Augustyniak. I thought I knew a lot about the value of eachdoll, I sell them and buy them regularly right here on amazon.com auctions. However, I opened the pages of this book and it is fantastic and a must for any serious collector. All the photos are in color, by date, series, it is all in this book. You will be amazed that some Barbies are valued in high 5 figures! I'm so glad I have this reference. Everyone who is interested in Barbie should! END

The WORST of all Barbie Book Series!.......2003-01-25
If you have any love of the English language, and are able to tell good photographs from bad ones, you will truly dislike all of the books by this woman that I have read, including Barbie Exclusives volumes 1, 2 and 3. The text is virtually unreadable, almost completely devoid of any real information, and is generally a painful experience. The photographs are almost equally bad, ranging from grainy yellowish shots, to lovely ones in which box-front glare almost obliterates any details of the doll inside. Truly, you can do much better than this series! Try the Collector's Encyclopedia of Barbie Doll Exclusives and More by J. Michael Augustyniak.

Timless Creations- A Timeless Book.......1998-05-30
This book by Margo Rana is fun and informative. The pictures are very detailed, bright and well done, making the reader feel like they own each doll. I got my book over a year ago for $25. I missed out on this great deal, but I hope that others won't. Margo Rana really explains the dolls in full detail, but they are in her own words. She marks pricing well, so when you go to a doll show or are shopping for dolls, you know what is a good deal and what isn't. When Margo talked about the Pink Splendor doll, the last doll she talked about, she commented to the reader about the $900 listing price on the doll. She said, "Be kind when judging this doll; it's not her fault she is so expensive." This book is extremely fun to look at. I seem to find something new and special about each doll every time I read it. I hope that you will buy this book and enjoy as much as I did. Even as a young collector (I'm 13) I find this book a great blessing.
