Biological Oceanography
ASIN: 0195067320 |
Book Description
This textbook for advanced level courses in oceanography focuses on the interaction of ecological and physical processes that govern the ocean. The book begins with an introduction to ecology, using foraging theory and analytic formulation of encounter rates of predator and prey as organizing principles. Examples used are primarily marine to convey how marine systems differ from terrestrial environments. These differences, which carry through the remainder of the book, arise primarily through the ways in which deposit feeders process seafloor muds, suspension feeders extract particles from seawater, bacteria absorb solutes, and marine plants gather nutrients and light. The next section of the book is devoted to central issues of biological oceanography: controls of primary production, the role of bacteria, and questions of recruitment. The last part treats interdisciplinary topics as the arena in which the non-biological environmental scientist is most likely to find need for some biological background. The book is designed to introduce and develop concepts rather than to give extensive factual detail.
Book Description
This text is a "must-have" for any serious karate student who wants to truly understand how Kata works and where real applications seem "hidden".
Customer Reviews:
Great Book In A Sea Of Copies.......2007-09-21
It is great to see another book from this author who actually caters for those who seek new knowledge instead of just repackaging old theories and techniques. I have been teaching similar theories about kata in my class for years and having done Judo I found many throws, chokes etc., in all the kata. A great book for beginners to aspire to and some good direstion for veterans.
Can this be true?.......2005-10-31
Could someone who has this book list the evidence that Mr. Schmeisser provides to explain how he happens to know a Kata that has been lost for almost a century now. The only karate masters who ever mentioned it, in books written in the 1940's, say that no one knew it then and it had been forgotten. They obviously did not teach it, so how has it now popped back up? I would like to know whether this book is credible, or just a clever way to make a buck..... before I buy it.
Misguided attempt.......2005-09-24
I read this book with great interest. I have known a few people that practiced these kata. This book does not present the real kata but instead a modified version of the first two pinan. The history is good but if you want these Kata get Funakoshi's Karate do Kyohan because the heian/pinan kata are there. I guess this wasn't a bad attempt just misguided. There are still a few that practice these Kata if you look hard enough.
Kata Origins .......2004-09-06
Channan: Heart of the Heians, by Elmar T. Schmeisser, explores the possibility of the modern day Heians as derived from the chinese kata Channan-Dai and Channa-Sho. The author makes no definitive claim that his studies are absolute, but presents his research in a sound historical manner leaving the reader to make his or her own decision regarding the origins of the Heian kata based on the research presented. The book is loaded with simple-to-follow, step-by-step, photos of Channan-Dai and Channan-Sho and accompanying text for each step. In a simple straight forward way, the author clearly illustrates apparent or perceived correlations between the Channan kata and the modern day Heians. An added plus in this book is the way it is laid out; the book is designed in such a way that keeps the reader flowing seamlessly from one photographic illustration to another. Only two things might have improved this well produced book and research, one of which is nearly impossible to do on the printed page, showing the transition moves in sequence, and crisper photographs with a higher quality camera. Overall, regardless of these two minor shortcomings, this book is a fantastic work and will be greatly appreciated by anyone who enjoys the study of traditional Japanese kata, bunkai, and kata origins.
Dr. Schmeisser Continues to Break New Ground.......2004-06-28
This is the first book of it's kind to my knowledge. Dr. Schmeisser presents for us two kata, Channan Dai and Channan Sho, of Chinese origin, that he believes are the root kata that Itosu Yasutsune used as the source material to create the 5 Pinan kata (known as Heian in Japanese styles). Dr. Schmeissar's writing style and organization is extremely logical. There's no fluff here, just the meat. He begins by providing us with a background and historical context of these kata to convince us of his theory. This chapter is chalked full of fascinating footnotes from the research that he did. He then takes us right into Channan Dai and Channan Sho, showing the movements with pictures and detailed written description with full Bunkai. In the fourth chapter, he relates the Channan sequences and bunkai to their respective Heian sequences, teaching us bunkai for the Heian kata. The 5th chapter is a historical note discussing the kata origins and the question of whether they are the root kata of the Pinan/Heian. The chapter demonstrates to me the author's professional integrity and honesty by admitting that his theory cannot be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt but provides us his reasoning and allows us to make our own judgement. The last chapter provides us with a photographic sequence of the kata to use as a reference for learning. This is, perhaps, the only place in the book where I find fault which, quite possibly, could be due to my own short comings. I found it hard trying to follow the sequence and often got confused on which direction I needed to go in or what my feet needed to do during some of the turns and transitional movements (I'll need the video to get my performance correct). In my opinion, more photos of the transitional moves would have alleviated this for me. Despite this small fault, I believe this to be an extremely valuable book and there's no other like it on the subject. I highly recommend it.

The Budding Author.......2007-07-27
After starting the journey of becoming a published author years ago, I've come across many "self-help" books on how to write a novel, and my experience is that 90% of them are a load of rubbish. This one fortunately for you and me, is not.
If you're serious about becoming a writer and you've already begun the journey, then this is one for the collection. I'm not positive that you will come back to it afterwards like Solutions for Writers by Sol Stein or your English Grammar reference book, but it will help you write/tell your story better.
Specifically it gives you examples of how to:
1. Show vs Tell (a common problem with most new authors)
2. Description (description for literature vs description for popular fiction)
3. Characters
4. Timing
5. Grammar (a very brief section that you'll probably already know if you've been writing for some time now)
There is other useful info as well, but these are just a few.
Lastly, unlike most authors in this genre, he does not solely reference his own books. He uses a wide range of writers encompassing literature as well as popular modern fiction.
WELL WORTH THE PURCHASE PRICE.......2006-11-21
The Description & Setting volume for the Write Great Fiction series might not be the last word on these subjects, or the one book that has it all, but it provides a good overview and plenty of material for further reflection. Well worth the purchase price.
This one goes to the trash can ... .......2005-09-18
Sorry. I hate to pile on, but I must agree with Lit Teacher on this one. The thinking was sloppy and contradictory, and the writing was wooden, stiff, irritating. I bought it a few months back and hid it in a drawer until I could get around to it. I pulled it out today with a smile and high hopes.
Boy was I disappointed. I thought maybe I was having a bad day. Maybe my concentration was off. So I pulled out Truman Capote. Smooth as silk. So it wasn't my fault. It was Ron's. I finally decided to scan the book, and that revealed there was really nothing new here, nothing interesting.
I wish I had not wasted the money. I must be more careful. But, as for this book, there is nothing I need to refer to later, so I'm putting it in the trash. It is Saturday evening. They will come on Monday to take it and the other garbage away.

Par Excellence.......2005-08-20
Chock full of massive amounts of advice. A nice feature is an appendix with a listing of each chapter and all the points from it. So you can skim this appendix and see the entire book in about a dozen pages, there is about one page per chapter.
I have been reading through many, many books in preparation for writing my own. This one is well worth the trouble of purchasing and reading. I keep it handy as I write.
Helpfull.......2005-08-09
Very helpful and gives great ideas on how to get started with your story or to improve on that manuscript

Interesting recipes.......2005-07-24
I just orderes this book as I am primarily vegetarian (eat some fish) and it is easy to fall into a rather boring routine of a few favorites. The Basics section alone was worth the price of the book. It is usually the sauce or dressing that adds the flavor to vegetarian meals - the Chiptole Sauce is HEAVENLY, try the Papaya-Habanero Sauce - WOW. And the Curry butter, Chipotle Mayonaise, Hananero Honey....if you like spicy, or just that added pique, this is truly the book for you. You don't have to be a cook with lots of time - just use the Basics and add to your normal cooking. Or use the recipes like Autumn Black Bean Salsa to add to pasta,Green Papaya Salad (a personal favorite), Marinated Garbanzo Bean Salad, etc. Personally I don't make recipes which all for loads of preparation and I find this to be a wonderful book which will add great dimenson to your cooking with minor effort.
Refreshingly Spicy.......2003-03-03
For the most part, I really like this book. I get really tired of boring vegetarian recipes, and enjoy that I have a complete array of spicy choices to cook from this book. She combines interesting ingredients that create suprisingly delightful dishes. My only complaint is that some of the receipes are complicated and time consuming to make. My favorite recipe is the Roasted Corn Chipotle Soup...it is incredibly spicy, but so delicious.
Lots of variety.......2002-08-11
This is a neat book - it has a real variety of recipes, covering lots of different nationalities (although not spelled out per se) and there are all sorts of tid bits of advice in here that discuss things types of noodles, and there are even thought provoking quotes scattered through. Recipes are good - they're a bit more adventurous than I first expected which is great. They're combinmations I might not have thought of on my own so it's been fun learning new things. (e.g. corn on the cob with chipolte-tequilla butter) I highly recommend it! (and it's not *that* spicy) Another good book is Some Like it Hot by Robin Robinson
Excellent.......1999-08-17
The meals are great. If you like it spicy, this book has it. Additionally, the range of genres is fantastic. You can do oriental, mexican, italian, etc. Best of all, a great deal of the meals are vegan, not just vegetarian. You don't have to worry about your diet. It's there. The recipes aren't simple, but they're worth it.
Not a Vegetarian cookbook alone, a great spicy resource too!.......1997-09-01
Vegetarian foods are not just for vegetarians. With today's healthier eating and with so many people having alternatives to the main meat dish, many books have been written towards vegetarian eating.
Jennifer Trainer Thompson has written Jump Up and Kiss Me ~ Spicy Vegetarian Cooking published by 10 Speed Press. I met the "Hot" Jennifer in New York recently, and she sent me a copy of her newest book, and after reviewing this one, I now want her others that include the Great Hot Sauce Book, Hot Licks and Trail of Flame. She was also involved in a boater's cookbook, the Yachting Cookbook.
Jump Up and Kiss Me is a nominee for The James Beard Awards and many of the recipes show why. Some of the recipes that are found in this book include: Sundried Tomato Relish with Cayenne Toasts; Roasted Shitake and Walnut Pate; Sweet Potato Fritters with Jerk Sauce; Artichokes with Rosemary-Curry Vinaigrette; Toasted Corn Salsa, Portuguese Vegetable Stew; Shitake Stew with Crisp Polenta; Buckwheat Pasta with Peanut-Coconut Sauce; Rice Noodles with Vegetables, tofu, and Watercress; Pasta Gratin with Mustard Greens; Focaccia Pizza with Pears, Walnuts, and Gorgonzola; Chutney, red Pepper, and Grilled Cheddar Sandwich; Hot 'n' Dirty Rice Salad; Jalapeno-Onion Corn Sticks; and Rosemary-Serrano Red Wine Vinegar.
The book is filled with many great recipes with a lot of ingredient information throughout the book. There are no suggestions to alternatives to the ingredients used for other recipe ideas, and in my opinion the paper the book is printed on, is not conducive for a cookbook. The paper is a newsprint style absorbent paper and not a slick cleanable paper that should be used for cookbooks. This would have been a great book to have some of the recipes in full color photographs, yet I'm, sure due to higher cost were not available. In spite of these few setbacks, Jump Up and Kiss Me is a great vegetarian cookbook, and an even better spicy recipe reference. Most of the ingredients are available through your local grocer, with only a handful that may need to be purchased from a specialty store

Romance, mystery and a wily villian.......2007-03-17
The hero and heroine are both unusually intelligent people caught up in a intriguing mystery concerning a missing family member and an ancient family heirloom. Our hero and heroine were first captured by the author in an earlier book "The Tiger's Mistress", so knew each other before this book takes place. Once you begin this tale, you won't want to put it down until the end!
Give it 3.5 stars.......2005-04-08
First, Olivia's assistant Winslow is a terrific character. One does feel the first book should have been read first; I often wondered what background information I was missing. There are some great moments, especially regarding danger and suspense. Honestly I was more intrigued by secondary characters the Wolfhound and sister Cara than by the romantic leads here. I did like Davenport, a lot, but he seemed much too insecure to make a good mate for Olivia. As for her, I never really warmed up to her. The suspense was quite good, but the romance lacked something for me. I'm interested in the other books, particularly the one I imagine is on tap regarding the Wolfhound and Cara, but I wasn't thrilled by this one. Three 3 1/2 stars.
A Good Read...But Not Without Some Problems!.......2005-03-12
This was overall a good read. What kept it from being a "Great" read was the fact that the reader might feel as if they have come into the middle of an on going story between our two main characters Olivia and Davenport. As a result their romance was a little less than full-filling since this reader felt as if she had missed out on something important with their past interaction.
This read was peppered with very good chemistry between Olivia and Davenport, a mystery surrounding a family heirloom that has a particularly nasty curse attached to it, and a search for Davenport's younger brother. Combine all of these aspects and you have a very good read.
I recommend this book but suggest that if you are new to Ms. DaRif you might want to pick up her first book "The Tiger's Mistress" as I feel that some of the missing pieces may be found here. I know that I will be picking up a copy none the less.

engaging historical romance .......2004-10-27
After spending time in India working for Grenville & Company Import Tea, Olivia Marquand returns to England. Her hostess Catherine enjoys her company as Olivia proves quite competitive with men in so called manly occupations like riding and shooting arrows. Catherine demands her older brother, recluse Max Bingham, come see her because their brother Kipling has vanished along with his long time female childhood companion and the Ruby Lion heirloom. Other thefts nearby have occurred with the evidence pointing towards Kipling.
Olivia and Max know each other from when he thought she as the Lady in Red was involved in nefarious activity. Although they cleared the air in which she was proven innocent and they were halfway in love with one another, his visage was disfigured so he became a recluse. As Max investigates in an increasingly dangerous situation in an effort to prove his brother's innocence and to find him, Olivia assists him. This second time they fall fully in love, but will love change Max from a hermit to a nurturing lover?
This engaging historical romance stars two delightful protagonists who see life as opposites. Since his injuries Max is the poster boy for introverted pessimism while Olivia is an I can do anything optimist. Together they make a formidable team although the adversaries seem tougher. Will love prove enough to keep them together?. Fans will want more kiss and tell sequels by Andrea DaRif whose latest is fun to read.
