    Book Description

This true-life adventure story, set in the wilds of Canada's Northwest Territories, is the narrative of a father and son team who have canoed more than 3,000 miles above the sixtieth parallel.

Cold Summer Wind takes the reader down three of the major rivers of Canada's vast barren lands -
    - The entire 920 miles of the Kazan River system from Snowbird Lake to Baker Lake, then out through Chesterfield Inlet into Hudson Bay.
    - The Elk River and the Thelon River, through the heart of the Thelon Game Sanctuary
    - The wild and seldom-traveled Back River, from Muskox Rapids to within ninety miles of Chantrey Inlet on the Arctic Ocean, in the land of the midnight sun.

This is an action book! And action the Kleins had, shooting through boiling rapids and swirling white water, or while bucking high seas on some of the larger lakes.

In Cold Summer Wind, the author shares the sights and sounds, the excitement, the danger…and the unforgettable slendor of Canada's far north:
    - The phenomenon of mirages and the Ross Light
    - The migrations of the Barren Lands caribou
    - The Barren Ground grizzly
    - Tundra wolves
    - Muskoxen
    - Chesterfield Inlet tides
    - Ferocious insects
    - Caught in a whirlpool
    - The Old North Trail
    - The King of the Barrens
    - Flora and fauna
    - The Legendary John Hornby
    - Missionary of the Barrens, Joseph Buliard, O.M.I.

          Book Description

Behind each winning horse is a groom, the person responsible for every nuance of his care, his health, and his spirit. In Service to the Horse explores a year in the life of three grooms, all working with champion thoroughbreds. The profession is largely dominated by young women, who work for no glory but their love of horses. Nusser tells the story of a stud groom in the most storied stable of Kentucky racehorses, home to the most high strung and dangerous stallions in the world; a show jumping groom struggling to square her desire to compete with the exacting demands of the rider she works for; finally, at the book's heart, Samantha Burton, a groom at the stables of an Olympic gold medalist in the controversial and rarefied sport of Three Day Eventing. In gripping detail, Nusser-a former groom herself-tells the stories of these horses, their owners and riders, and the multibillion-dollar industry of equestrian sport. Through the major competitions that define their year, Nusser interweaves stable lore, horse mythology, animal behavior, and meditations on the precise nature of the intense bond between humans and horses.

4 out of 5 stars Grooms work HARD!! Yikes!!.......2006-08-19

This book will certainly give you an appreciation for the hard work grooms put into caring for "their" horses, as well as the difficulty proffessionals have in finding and keeping gooms. Grooming is often a thankless job (more often than not, unfortunately!), with long hours and hard work, as well as little to no time off, but most people are unaware of this fact, even many horse enthusiasts. It's nice to see the grooms get the attention they deserve, as well as being an enlightening look into the world of professional riding.

My only qualm is that the book reads like a 200 page newspaper article, not like a novel. The writing (especially the tense of the writing), distances the reader from getting into the "story". Nonetheless, it's a worthwhile read for anyone interested in horse care or professional riding. Those with only a casual interest in horses or without any real experience in showing or stable management may want to look elsewhere for a book, but those with a working knowlegde of horse care and terminology will find this an interesting read.

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what it's supposed to be.......2006-07-03

This book left me thinking about grooming and a grooms life for days after I read it. Straight forward, with lovely descriptive passages about the things grooms do and are, it reads easily and quickly--and is over too soon. Nice too, that it parallels three types of grooms: racing, jumper, and three day. Well done.

          5 out of 5 stars BOTH ENTERTAINING & INFORMATIVE!.......2006-02-24

What more can you ask of a book? When first I picked out this book, it was with the intention of learning about the world of a professional horse groom. What I did not count on was learning all about that and so very much more. I would not have given the equine sport called Three Day Eventing a second thought before reading this book. This author describes it so brilliantly & colorfully, I could not wait to turn each page to, as they say, "find out what happens next". It is the true account of this groom's daily life in the professional stables of World Olympic Champions David & Karen O'Conner. Many other well-recognized names at the top of the horse world are featured as well, as this skilled writer takes you on an intimate journey few spectators are ever privey to. This honest & intrigueing portrait of life at the top of the equine world is one that no horse enthusiast should miss. However you feel about the sport of Three Day Eventing, this honest & compassionate portrait will engross you page after page. The sheer strength & beauty of the writing made this book a joy to read.

5 out of 5 stars I Didn't Want to Put the Book Down!.......2005-03-09

And I didn't. I read the entire book in one sitting! Susan Nusser depicts the lives of these professional horsepeople (and their horses) with humor and sensitivity. Her writing made me feel like I was there with the horses and their handlers. Not only was the book interesting, but it was informative. It makes you think about your own abilities and qualities as a horseperson.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all riders, owners, & equine career wishers!.......2005-01-05

As someone who has groomed for years on the 'A' show circut, a stint at a top QH breeding farm, and now owns a small H/J barn of my own, I can say this book does an excellent job of illustrating the 'real world' of the horse show and breeding scene. Too often riders (and owners) have absolutely no idea how much time and effort are involved in producing and maintaining a top notch operation. This book should be a must read for anyone wanting to go into any form of an equine career. It offers the worker a true perspective on what to expect, while also reminds the owners and managers how hard the grooms work and how they are often motivated. It is also a wonderful 'behind the scenes' look at a level of expertise many equine enthusiasts will never otherwise have the opportunity to share.

5 out of 5 stars The appetizer before the feast.......2007-04-03

This is a wonderful anthology of Lewis' writings. Taken from many of his well known and lesser known works, this is a great reference tool for anyone who is familiar with his works and especially those of us who only know him from his Narnia Chronicles. After much soul searching, Lewis became converted to Christianity. He moved from atheist to Christian theist. With much thought and talks with Henry Dyson and J.R.R. Tolkien, he became convinced about Christianity. From this conversion, a great Christian apologist was born or perhaps reborn as his life and thoughts expanded and shifted. Within this work are the thoughts of the pre and post converted Lewis. His train of logic can be followed and examined in a more readily available format. This hopefully will not eliminate the need to read his works but serve as a taste that leads to further readings. Lewis had an interesting perspective and viewed things from both sides of the coin and sometimes the edge as well.

Reading through these thoughts causes me many times to stop and reflect. Lewis was the type of author that really makes one think. Whether browsing by specific subject or source, this is a reference tool that is well worth adding to the shelf.

What a gem. If you like (love) CS Lewis, or aren't very well acquainted with him, this book is for you. It's a quick and delightful way to get Lewis' insights. Then you can go to the source material for a deeper examination if you want. This book is never on the shelf - it is always sitting out so I can grab it for a quick uplifting read.

                Book Description

Lewis Carroll's two great Alice stories -- Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass -- have entertained and amused both small children and grown adults alike for nearly a century and a half. Set in Victorian England, these wild, remarkable flights of fancy have had a lasting appeal to the world over and are surprisingly modern in their outlook. With Alice's adventures, which take her down a rabbit-hole to Wonderland or through a mirror into a fantastical game of chess, Carroll tells stories that are amusing and witty, but also surprisingly insightful and profound. Many of Carroll's phrases and expressions -- "Curiouser and curiouser," or "Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast" -- have entered the language of everyday use.

In Quotable Alice, David W. Barber, whose books include Bach, Beethoven and the Boys and Better Than It Sounds: A Dictionary of Humorous Musical Quotations, brings together the best and most memorable of Carroll's pithy expressions from the Alice books. With the text is a selection of the famous illustrations John Tenniel created for the original editions.

3 out of 5 stars Handy Little Reference to the Lewis Carroll Books.......2003-11-06

A nice book which contains the "best & most memorable" of quotes from "Alice in Wonderland" & "Through the Looking Glass." Contains many well reproduced original illustrations by John Tenniel. This book is divided into two main sections, one for each of the above works, but oddly, there's a separate title page for "Through the Looking Glass" on p. 51, but no such page for "Alice in Wonderland." Each quote is accompanied by the book title, chapter, & chapter title from where it came. There's a nice little keyword index to the quotes, but it could be more complete. For instance, if you want to know which quotes are from the Cheshire Cat, you won't find it in the index. The word "cats" is listed in the index, but those listings refer to only the subject matter of the quotes, not their sources, so the index won't help you find quotes by any particular character. A little overpriced at $14.95 for 118 pages in a small dimensioned paperback.

This 1980 compilation of quotes is a real find. It is a general collection, arranged by topic, taken mostly from _The New York Times_ and various newsmagazines. The quotes are trenchant and pithy, and would be a fresh discovery to those who are only familiar with the big annual quotation dictionaries. Some examples:

Cocktail Party: A hundred standing people smiling and talking to one another, nodding like gooney birds.

TV: What we have is a chatterbox-equipped nightlight.

                  This is worth searching for.

                          Book Description

Based on a wealth of documents long buried in the Vatican archives, Prisoner of the Vatican tells the story of the Church's secret attempt to block the unification of Italy and seize control - not in ancient times, but in the late nineteenth century. For more than fifty years, the pope was a self-imposed prisoner within the Vatican walls, planning to flee Italy, to return only as the restored ruler of Rome and the Papal States. The scheme to dismantle the newborn Italian nation involved not only the cardinals and the Curia but also attempts to exploit the rivalries among France, Germany, Austria, Spain, and England.
Kertzer brings to light an untold drama played out among fascinating characters: Pope Pius IX, the most important pontiff in modern history; King Victor Emmanuel, working behind the backs of his own ministers; the dashing national hero Garibaldi; France's ill-starred Napoleon III, and many more. During this time, Italy was besieged from within and without, and Church history changed forever when the pope was declared infallible for the first time. Prisoner of the Vatican looks deep into the workings of the Church in its final bid to regain the pope's temporal power. Kertzer sweeps readers along with riveting, revelatory panache. No one who reads his new book will ever think of Italy, or the Vatican, in quite the same way again.

                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent History.......2006-05-02

David Kertzer provides a detailed account of the Vatican's attempts to return the Pope to his temporal throne, reigning over the former Papal States, for many years following the successful unification of Italy. Exercising one of the very freedoms that the Vatican had vowed to suppress if returned to temporal power, Kertzer uses his freedom of expression to give us a fair, honest, and balanced treatment of events. His history does not come off as being anti-Catholic, but it deals (factually) with issues that others might wish to avoid in order not to appear being so. It is, therefore, a rich source, taking us behind the scenes to experience the very human side of the Vatican. If it is a rule that all governments engage in disinformation and spin, then David Kertzer shows us that the Vatican is no exception. He also reveals the tightrope that the new nation of Italy straddled in its first years, governing a people who were, for the most part, faithful Catholics who did not always know how to make distinctions between loyalty to faith and nation while also working with the rulers of other European nations whose citizens were struggling with those distinctions. One comes away we a new respect for those early leaders of Italy who held on when challenged from within and from without to their newfound freedom and newly founded republic. I highly recommend this and Kertzer's other books.

5 out of 5 stars From documents buried in Vatican archives.......2006-04-28

Documents buried in Vatican archives have only recently been made available to some historians, and David Kertzer's access to some of these records lend a lively touch to his political and religious history PRISONER OF THE VATICAN: THE POPES, THE KINGS, AND GARIBALDI'S REBELS IN THE STRUGGLE TO RULE MODERN ITALY. In 1870 Pope Pius IX and his successor decided to go into exile secretly to attract support among the faithful for the papal cause: to conspire against Garibaldi and the king of Italy to control the Italian state. It was a brilliant move: popes became prisoners of the Vatican for sixty years and even considered moving it outside Italy. A riveting true story of religion and a political scheme which changed the world.

                          5 out of 5 stars Untold history.......2005-06-02

The subtitle of this book is a bit misleading: there didn't appear to be a "secret plan" to recapture Rome from the new Italian state. Most of what happened was rather straightforward, and done by diplomatic means. In any event, this is an extremely interesting book about a little-known subject. Of course, everyone knows the basic story of the taking of Rome from the Pope by the new Italian state, but after that, nothing. This book very well fills in the knowledge gap by showing how the new state "bent over backwards" to try and mollify the Papal folks, only to be rebuffed at every turn. From the vantage of more than 125 years of Italian sovereignty over Rome, we can see how foolish the fears of the Pope actually were, but hindsight is the best sight. At the time, the Pope felt he was protecting the sovereignty and independence of the Papacy by having a temporal land under his control. This is fascinating history at its best, and I strongly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars A Little Known Incident that Shaped the World.......2005-03-11

Hidden here and there within the history of the Roman Catholic church must be dozens, even hundreds of stories that would surpass the best fictional writing. Here is one of them.

We view Italy (and Germany for that matter) as countries, countries with a history going back for thousands of years. But this isn't true. These two countries came together as countries in the middle 1800's. Before that they were a loose collection of city states, small kingdoms I'd guess you call them.

This is one such story. Victor Emmanuel II, the king of an Italy finally united wanted to make Rome/The Vatican a part of Italy. The pope, at that time Pius IX, didn't recognize Emmanuel or for that matter Italy. Thus began this story.

The Pope retreated into the walls of the Vatican, and they remained at impasse until Mussolini finally came to an agreement that stands today where the church recognizes Italy, and Italy agreed that the Vatican was a soverign state.

This is a fascinating and little known story based on recently opened archives.

Now if the author could go back to the Vatican and get the archives on Galileo.
