    Book Description

This volume presents recent progress in our understanding of various mechanisms involved in chemical communication between individual animals. Such communication is important for survival and reproduction of any vertebrate species in a variable environment. Apart from visual and acoustic signals, many animals developed highly complex means of conveying message by odor and taste. Low molecular weight and volatile compounds known as pheromones affect many metabolic processes and behavioral traits. The chapters in this book are derived from presentations and discussions at the Ninth International Symposium on Chemical Signals in Vertebrates, held at the Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland, on July 25-29, 2000. The four days and nights of discussions at the conference explored diverse topics in chemical communication, and many of the chapters in this volume were improved by revisions in which the authors took into account the discussions in Krakow.

      Book Description

The Boston Red SoxÂ's loss to the New York Yankees in the final game of last yearÂ's playoffs has been called “the game of the century,” evidence that the rivalry between the Red Sox and the Yankees is hotter than ever. In the wake of that defeat, author and Boston Globe sports columnist Dan Shaughnessy has updated his bewitching story of the curse that has lain over the Red Sox since they sold Babe Ruth to the hated Yankees in 1920. Here he sheds light on classic Sox debacles—from Johnny PeskyÂ's so- called hesitation throw, to the horrifying dribbler that slithered between Bill BucknerÂ's legs, to last yearÂ's stunning extra-inning home run that kept the Sox without a World Championship for yet another year. Lively and filled with anecdotes, this is baseball folklore at its best.

1 out of 5 stars WOMBAT - Waste of money, brains and time.......2007-03-20

Don't bother - complete and utter rubbish. Too bad this cannot rate zero stars, it's not even worth that.

      4 out of 5 stars What Curse?.......2006-06-07

First of all, let me make one thing perfectly clear; there is no curse. Dan Shaughnessy is a writer who wrote about an imaginary curse that, incidently, was conjured up by Red Sox fans. Had he the foresight to envision readers actually presuming that he was depicting a real live curse, I'm certain that he would have included a disclaimer at the beginning of his book.

Why did the Red Sox enjoy success when Ruth was a member of that organization? It's very simple. Besides Ruth, the Red Sox also employed Hall of Fame pitcher Herb Pennock, and solid players such as Joe Dugan, Everett Scott, George Pipgras, Joe Bush and Sam Jones, among others. They were the team to beat at the time. When Harry Frazee sold Ruth to New York, it started a "house cleaning" that eventually sent the aforementioned players to the Yankees over the next two years. The Sox weren't cursed, they just became Yankees.

4 out of 5 stars My goodness, are Red Sox fans bitter.......2005-05-18

For a good laugh, go back and read some of the older reviews of this book. "Shaughnessy's an idiot", "Go away loser", and "You're not a Red Sox fan" seem to be in every review. I read this book as a Yankees fan savoring every chapter of Red Sox misery. Shaughnessy tells the story of the Red Sox since 1918 in a breezy style and with a dry sense of humor. Of course he doesn't actually believe there is a "curse." He simply uses the Babe's sale to the Yankees as a backdrop to the real reasons why the team was unable to win a World Series. Ignorant ownership, bad personnel moves, and prickly relationships between players and players and management. Baseball fans should enjoy this book as the stories flow nicely. Red Sox Nation no doubt loves this book has more or less been rendered obsolete.

      1 out of 5 stars Curse is a misnomer.......2005-01-13

The idea that the Red Sox were cursed because Harry Frazee sold the Bambino to finance a show is a misnomer at best, and a sincere lack of honesty at worst. The true reason the Red Sox failed to win a World Series title in 86 years was due to ethnic racism, pure and simple. The Red Sox had Jackie Robinson tryout in Fenway Park and commented that Robinson was a great hitter, but it was "too bad that he was colored". They also watched Willie Mays in a tryout and passed up the opportunity to sign him. They refused to have a young Henry Aaron tryout for the team when they found out he was colored. That is how the old Boston Braves were able to sign Aaron in 1952 to play for them (albeit in Milwaukee) and the fabled cross town rivals were not. Racism was the true curse of the Boston Red Sox. Boston has had a serious problem with racial hatred in the neighborhoods of Dorchester and Roxbury for decades and refusing to acknowledge this problem leads the naive to assume that there could be any relationship to the trade of Babe Ruth to the NY Yankees and the 86 year drought of a World Series championship. Pure, utter nonsense. Racism was their curse.

      1 out of 5 stars Thank goodness.......2005-01-06

Thank goodness this book is finally obsolete. It thrills me to know that this worm will no longer cash on the misery of the fans of the team he claims to root for.

Did Mr. Shaughnessy disappear in a puff of smoke when the final out the World Series was recorded?

      Book Description

Some believe that the ghost of Babe Ruth -- the most famous baseball player who ever lived -- is still watching over the game today. What would you say?

It all started on January 5, 1920, a fateful day in baseball history, when the Boston Red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees for a mere pile of cash. That's when, some say, the Red Sox's reversal of fortune began. Before Ruth was traded, the Red Sox had been the best team in baseball, winning five of fifteen World Series. Since then, the Yankees have had twenty-six World Series to their credit. The Red Sox have come painstakingly close over those decades, but not close enough. Could it be that Babe Ruth took revenge on the team that traded him so long ago -- making the Red Sox wait a torturous eighty-six years before they would win another World Series?

Baseball legend? Fate? Coincidence? Here's the story of the Curse of the Bambino -- the greatest baseball legend ever told.

The Legend of the Curse of the Bambino is a joy to read. It talks about Babe Ruth in his baseball career. This is a very intense story.
This story captures the magic of baseball. It shows the smiles and the tears that are a part of this game. The invisible bond among the generations is inspiring. The new players remembering the old players, really shows the dedication and love they have for this sport. The Legend of the Curse of the Bambino shares the joy of rooting for a team. When the fans get excited when their team wins is so exhilarating.
This book is a blessing for all ages. The pictures are very interesting and detailed. The clippings from the newspaper are a great touch to the story.

5 out of 5 stars The legend of the Curse of the Bambino.......2005-11-12

Sorry, but, the reviews I have just read on Amazon,in my opinion, missed the point. The "Red Sox Curse" is essentially a legend that has been around for years, and Dan Shaughnessy's book does a great job to break it down-simply-for kids. The illustrations are great for kids and the text is simple and to the point. The book does a great job in getting the story (LEGEND) across to kids. By, the way, I'm a transplanted "New Yorker" into the Boston area, and I didn't know the legend. I, as well as my two young girls, loved the story. It gave us a whole new perspective.

1 out of 5 stars Attention good parents: Don't let Shank disappoint your kids!.......2005-10-14

One would think Shaughnessy, a.k.a The Shank, would be perfect writing for children. His Boston Globe columns amount to no more than childish drivel. Yet one should expect a writer who is so disappointing to adults to do likewise for kids. He attempts here to get his claws into children and brainwash them into believing his so-called "curse" gibberish, and therefore perpetuate his own revenue stream. The Shank's hope, so transparently self-serving, is that these kids will grow up buying more of his foolish fiction. The real "curse" was the alcoholic haze under which the Red Sox were run and managed by the Yawkeys, Harrington, et al(thank you Clark Booth and Leigh Montville, two real journalists, for pointing this out). Parents: Be warned! Keep your kids away from The Shank.

      2 out of 5 stars turning anti-semtism into a children's book.......2004-11-25

In a recent ESPN article, baseball historian and author Glenn Stout revealed the truth about the so-called "Curse of the Bambino": it is rooted in anti-semitic slander that originated 80 years ago with Henry Ford's racist newspaper, the Dearborn Independent. (Evidently, Ford thought Red Sox owner Henry Frazee was Jewish.) Now that the truth has been exposed -- a truth that evidently escaped Mr. Shaughnessy's reporting of the original "Curse" -- it is sad and disappointing that Mr. Shaughnessy and his publisher have chosen to push all this on children.

Then again, perhaps Mr. Shaughnessy will do the right thing and revise his book to acknowledge the anti-semitic roots of the "Curse" he helped popularize. It would be the honorable thing to do, and he should be commended if he chooses that approach.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story, Great Read.......2007-04-10

Book was suggested by a friend and I took it on vacation. Finished in a day and a half, kept rushing to get back to it. Great blend of one of the greatest moments for Mets fans (I was lucky enough to be at game 6)with true baseball history. Author Camerik's descriptions of the events from the 20s (or was it 1918) were stellar especially considering this was a pre-ESPN, pre-internet era with limited recorded history.

Always fascinating to ponder how slightly tweaking the past could affect the future/present and throw in the sports twist and you have one entertaining read.

4 out of 5 stars Cool book for true fans.......2007-03-23

The Carl Mays/Ray Chapman tragedy is a great story and hardly any fans know about it (except those who have read Mike Sowell's "The Pitch that Killed." This book takes the fictional route to the story, with some twists and turns that I don't want to spoil for you. But Howard Camerik brings the story to life, especially if you are a Mets fan and still remember Game 6 in 1986. Great for a true fan. Bravo! But don't let your kids read it, because there are a lot of curse words in here. Eeeks!

5 out of 5 stars Quick Read; Transcends Baseball Theme.......2006-11-17

I don't generally read sports books, but this one caught my interest. Baseball with a surprise historical twist that one would never anticipate takes this novel to another level. Clever, humorous and extremely well researched with obscure references to former players and observations on the antics of others more current, it invites you into the clubhouse and the bullpen to share their thoughts, problems and dreams. You don't have to be a baseball fan to enjoy this book. And, you don't even have to like the Redsox to find yourself staying up late and turning pages in this compelling read. Recommend highly. Can't wait for Howard Camerik to publish his next novel.

4 out of 5 stars Reading Material for Red Sox Fans this October.......2006-09-13

I'll admit: when I first saw a description for Howard Camerik's The Curse of Carl Mays, I was a bit skeptical, especially when I saw the book involved the 1986 World Series, the subject of that flop-written-all-over-it movie from last year, Game 6. Successful Boston mayor has baseball dreams left over from his aborted playing days, blames the 68 year World Series win drought on an ornery Red Sox pitcher (Carl Mays, a headhunter who supposedly learned his malicious ways from a Red Sox manager, sold by the Sox to the Yankees in 1919 and then went on to accidentally kill a player by hitting him in the head), plays for a senior league charity game in Yankee Stadium the day of Game 6, gets hit in the head Matt Clement style and then strange cosmic events occur?

However, odd concept aside, once I started reading I found myself drawn in very, very quickly. Camerik is writing historical fiction, something I've always liked when well done and The Curse of Carl Mays is a great example of the genre for two reasons:

      1. Research: everything in Camerik's book, from the layout of the Polo Grounds in 1920 to the political views of Bill Lee to the names of minor league baseball players with peripheral interest to the plot is meticulously researched, something that's vital to any good piece of historical fiction, where attention to detail is very, very important. In the case of a book like The Curse of Carl Mays, where the main character (Boston mayor Pat McCarvill) is a fictional character inserted into highly documented situations like mayor of Boston and member of various minor and major league baseball teams, this amount of research is absolutely vital to making the plot work at all.

      2. Description: going along with the attention to detail in The Curse of Carl Mays is a good deal of description for characters, places and events, which help the reader to visualize exactly what's going on. Description is certainly helpful in any piece of fiction, but it's even more important when you're writing about the past.

On the whole, if you're looking for an exciting story about baseball, the Red Sox and more importantly, being a Red Sox fan, you can't go wrong checking out Howard Camerik's The Curse of Carl Mays.

They would sit together at Fenway. They would exchange emails. They would write about the games. And, as it happened, they would witness the greatest comeback ever in sports, and the first Red Sox championship in eighty-six years. What began as a Sox-filled summer like any other is now a fan's notes for the ages.

                    Book Description

The bridal bouquet is a tradition in almost every culture on Earth. Year after year, millions of women walk down the aisle, each carrying a personalized blend of carefully selected, artfully assembled flowers. To ensure that one's bridal bouquet lives forever in the memories of all those who share the day, this exquisite book introduces 40 original arrangements to complement the wedding gown, celebrate a special theme, honor a treasured family custom-and keep shaky hands occupied.

Gorgeous photography showcases each season's variety and diversity of flowers in creations from the simple to the elaborate: daises with ivy for the June bride; a mid-summer bundle of fragrant herbs; mistletoe and roses for a Christmas Eve wedding; hydrangeas with glass beads and tiny sea shells for a seaside ceremony; an Asian fan with amaranthus and chrysanthemum for an autumn reception. With detailed directions for wiring, taping, using tools, and choosing and grooming flowers, leaves and ribbons, Bouquets enables every bride-to-be, mother, sister, and friend to recreate these designs-or inspire the florist to fashion the perfect handful of flowers for that special day.

3 out of 5 stars Nice pictures for your coffee table.......2007-03-04

This book was not as good as I expected. Some of the bouquets were creative, but worth the price of the book. I got more out of Better Home and Garden's Creative Collection "Simply Creative Wedding Flowers". This magazine was a thousand times better than this book in terms of getting creative and unique ideas for wedding flowers.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice wedding flower book................2007-02-25

Finally, I have found a wedding flower book that gives you at least some ideas on how to make it yourself. Perhaps, the instructions could show more step by step pictures, but I think I can at least have an idea on how to make some boquets myself. So, I recommend this book. You might also want to find another beginner type arranging flowers book to go with this.

                    4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-03-13

This book gives you some great ideas on the kinds of flowers you may choose and gives you a good idea of how to put them together if you choose.

5 out of 5 stars It worked for me!.......2006-03-01

This book is great! There is a lot of detailed information so that people with no official floral experience can recreate the arrangements.

You can take inspiration from the illustrations and tailor your arrangements for other colors, etc.

This book made the floral arrangements for my wedding affordable. We were able to buy our flowers from a local florist and arrange them ourselves and we probably decreased the cost of flowers by at least half. We received lots of compliments on the flowers at the wedding -- we didn't use a particular arrangement as our inspiration, but the information from all the various arrangements was sufficient for us to create our own beautiful bridal bouquet, bridesmaids' bouquets, and altar arrangements.

2 out of 5 stars Poor content. Not for flowershop owners.......2005-09-16

If you are a flowershop owner and searching for a variety of fresh ideas for your clients this is not the appropiate book. It has a few nice photos but they are scarce. Definitely not worth it.

                      Book Description

Brought to the kitchen table by Hip Mama managing director Bee Lavender and editor Maia Rossini, Mamaphonic collects confessions and conversations about the exhilarating, entertaining, and difficult aspects of remaining creative while raising children. Essays range from the hilarious, such as "The Rudest Muse" by Lisa Peet, an illustrator and specialty baker who, by listening to her teenage son, finds new directions for her work; to the heart-wrenching "Childish Things" by Lori Pfeiffer, a writer diagnosed with a terminal illness during her pregnancy, who asks, "If you had only six months to live, what would you write?" Including voices as diverse as a transgendered teenage couple, an academic feminist, a punk rocker, and a poet, this eclectic mix of musings proves that becoming a mother is not the end but the beginning. Contributors include Ingrid Wendt, Ayun Halliday, Phoebe Gloeckner, Jen Thorpe, Gayle Brandeis, and others.

Let me preface this by saying that I really appreciate that we are able to hear the voices of a variety of different mothers, and their parenting styles. I purchased this book because I thought I would get some input on how to balance the struggling-artist type lifestyle of my husband and myself, with new parenthood. The end sentence on the back of the book "...becoming a mother is an expression of creativity, not its silencing" really got me to buy this. Some stories are very good and touching, but others just weren't interesting and were poorly written. The editing is also poor, as there are mistakes in many of the stories. The vast majority of the stories were written by women attempting to balance a writing career with motherhood. I really questioned the judgment of a few of these women, since I don't think it's appropriate to feed your kids junk food all day and have frozen waffles for dinner so that you can have time to be 'creative.' Some stories read to me as if these mothers were more concerned with their own achievement than with raising their children, and that the goal of the day was usually to get away from the kids and find time to work. However, most of the mothers did mention that their children were incredible boosts to their creativity, and some were very insightful. I just got the overriding impression that the work of motherhood mostly sucks, but ends up paying off somewhere down the road.

If you're at all familiar with the Hip Mama website or the Mamaphonic website, then you know that this book rocks! This book is a wonderful anthology filled w/ honest excerpts about women's lives.
Some of the essays are heartbreaking and poignant and others will make you laugh so hard that you'll cry. I'm going to give this book to all my friends with kids. It's a perfect gift.
If you liked Bitch in the House, Slacker Mom or read zines like like Edgy Catin' Mama, Hip Mama, or East Village Inky then you'll "get" what these mamas are saying.

                      Read and enjoy!

                      2 out of 5 stars Rather dull.......2004-12-09

I didn't find this book very exciting. The writing styles were poor and none of the stories really caught my attention. I really question how these children turn out when their mothers are so focused on themselves.
