5 out of 5 stars Louis van Gaal: Genius.......2001-04-15

During the late 1960's and early 1970's Rinus Michels and Ajax took flowing, attacking soccer and turned it into a science. This science has become widely known as 'Total Football.'

The fortunes of Ajax and the Dutch national team have always been inexorably linked. As it was in the 70's, 80's, and 90's Ajax's stars of today are the Dutch international stars of tomorrow: Cruyff, Van Basten, Kluivert etc.

In the early 1990's Louis Van Gaal and his staff took over at Ajax, reshaping the team, and in less than six years conquered Europe with what was essentially a youth team. Many of these former Ajax stars have gone on to become the backbone of the Dutch national team, and are among the world's best players.

Kormelink and Seeverens,' 'The Coaching Philosophies of Louis van Gaal and the Ajax Coaches,' is a wonderful book, that details Louis van Gaal's time at Ajax, including system/tactics, drills/training, youth development, goalkeeping and general philosophy. This book takes you behind the scenes of one Europe's most influential and respected clubs, allowing the reader the unique experience of critically observing Ajax through eyes of one of football's greatest minds. Van Gaal and his staff meticulously dissect all aspects of the Ajax system from the ground up, providing coaches, players and fans with an indispensable guide to attacking football.

Litmanen, Kluivert, Davids, Overmars, Kanu, Seedorf, the De Boers, Rijkaard, Van der Sar, Blind etc, all make an appearance, and Van Gaal's comments on their abilities, strengths and roles within the system make for some excellent reading. One of the most fascinating parts of the book from a fan's perspective, is Van Gaal's incredibly detailed account of Ajax's preparations for the Champions League final against AC Milan. He takes you through drills, training, tactics, even the warm up --not to mention the game itself, with the thoroughness one would expect from one of football's perfectionists.

Ultimately this is a book of philosophy and ideas, and is among the very best (of the many) football books I've read. Interestingly enough, it's also extremely accessible. While coaches at all levels will find it an extremely valuable resource, players and fans will find it equally informative. I highly recommend it to all fans of Dutch soccer and attacking football.

This book is excellent to assist the serious genealogist. It requires some dedication to follow through the suggestions but if you do, you will learn a lot. Unfortunately, for all my dedication, I still have not uncovered my paternal grandfather's secrets. But I have not finished traveling all the paths the book suggests. Some I have, some are still waiting. I would recommend the book to give you a serious and straight forward path to follow rather than randomly searching.

This book is full of info to help you know the next step in trying to find a relative through non traditional methods. I originally got the book at the library, and I found I needed to buy the book - so I could highlight and mark it for future reference. Great resource!

2 out of 5 stars Too narrow in focus, and dated........2006-11-18

If your brick walls are the immigrant generation, do yourself a favor and get a book specializing in that country's research rather than this one. Despite the 2005 copyright, the majority of the advice would have still held true a decade ago. And the emphasis on early American record issues is a real minus for those with later arriving ancestors. Despite the introduction's suggestion, the problem-solving techniques alone weren't worth the lack of examples in my problem areas.

However, if you've been working on your genealogy for decades, need a refresher, and are working on your DAR application... you might love this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-04-01

Excellent book on solving the problem of tracing family history. As with any research the first step it to simply get started. Other helpful resources are "Trees That Grow Families" by Brison West and "Iowa Harvest" a book about families that settled in Iowa. A neat site is www.lesanville.com which includes books by Harold Barts, Greg Lesan, Brianna Lesan-Barts, and Francis Lesan-Brooks. Many of these writers are published in other counties and may be hard to locate, but if you can find their books they are worth the read. Good luck.

I found this to also be a very interesting book. I am glad I had the time to read this book. The author seems to know a lot about the disability(s)these kids have. I think a lot of kids should read this book. I hope the more books I read are just like this one.

    5 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-03-10

My son with ADHD loves this book. It lists things that only fellow kids with ADHD could understand and really makes them feel "normal" and okay. Gives tons of suggestions for helping themselves out on tasks they struggle with.

    5 out of 5 stars Great parent/child dialogue.......2007-01-04

I am a therapist involved with identifying kids with learning problems and assisting them and their families in dealing with their special needs. This little book has proved very useful in helping parents work with their child in acquiring skills to deal with teachers, other students and members of their own families. It frames AD/HD in a more positive light and offers practical strategies for answering questions that others ask and help the child themselves understand that the diagnosis of AD/HD is not "the end of the world!" It is more geared towards elementary age and uses artwork and reading level that appeals to this age group. The reasonable cost and small format makes distributing this book to all my clients possible.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Disordered Editing.......2007-02-09

You can usually rely on Minette Walters for a seminar on criminally disturbed minds. There's some of that in this novel but it's way, way too long. Ms. Walters introduces us to an interesting character in George (female), a councillor trying to unravel a couple of long-ago murders blamed on a young man with mental disabilities. She teams up with a professor with an enormous chip on his shoulder.

The two of them go off investigating and the book bogs down into hypothesis after hypothesis after hypothesis. It just goes on and on. If it hadn't been a Minette Walters book I would have put it down unfinished, but I kept hoping it was going to click into gear. It didn't.

Where was the editor? The book could have been whacked down to about half its length.

1 out of 5 stars Perfect title: Disturbed Minds.............2006-11-05

"Disturbed minds"? Or absent ones? One has to wonder what happened to the usually-excellent Walters and her editor - who must have been asleep at the switch.

If the author had been anyone but Minette Walters, I'd never have read past the first 20 pages - if I'd wanted to read a 46 page (plus Appendix, plus responses) psychological/criminal/social workers Case History, I could have done that. It was far too long - only the most dedicated fan would plow through it. Where was the editor?

Apparently the objective was to give the reader access to all the oddments of the story at the same pace as the quasi-annoying protagonists. Then we could solve it right along with them. So throughout, the Case History, emails, newspaper articles and assorted letters were set forth, allowing us to ferret out the facts.

In some limited amount, that can be fun. But here, we were forced to read not only the material itself, but then also through each character's take - and response to the other characters. Then after that, we were treated to their discussion of the same thing. The result is that some minor elements are toyed with, analyzed, speculated about and worried over about a half-dozen times. All of which was seriously boring.

    Where was the editor?

Like other readers, I too was disgusted with the constant political diatribes. Although one was so gloriously revealing of the author's misplaced sympathies it was enormously enjoyable. The "Arab" character, pouting about the increased number of security checks at airports, laments, "After 9/11, the whole world changed".

Really? A more objective person might think it changed ON 9/11. It was the terrorist attacks on civilians that changed the world - not the governments response.

Even the language reveals the absence of an editor: virtually all characters respond to various pieces of information by "pulling a face". Did the whole crowd suffer from nervous tics? If not, surely there must be other ways to convey a visual response. Then, too, Walters fell into that insane habit of turning nouns into infinitives -- "To truant" being the worst, because it appears on darn near every page.

Apparently, the publishers permitted their editor "to truant" on this whole piece of work. Too bad, too bad. Walters can do so much better. Virtually always, she does. What happened here?

    3 out of 5 stars "C+" Effort From an "A" Student.......2006-05-28

Walters is a passionate storyteller, and she always infuses her plots with complex social and family conflicts in an engaging manner. The characters in all her novels are quite interesting, and they each have a ring of truth and vulnerability that makes them appealing to us readers.

The reasons people might not call this their favorite MW book:

--Plot is too convoluted. There are so many characters telling so many different versions of these events! After a while, you get a little frustrated trying to keep it all organized in your mind (although you have to admire Walters for being able to keep it all straight herself).

--Weak ending. Although the pertinent questions in the novel are answered, they trickle in at the last few pages in as weak a manner as possible. There's no satisfying comeuppance for any of the guilty parties.

--Suspects' garrulousness. All the people who were present for the tragic events in 1970 Bournemouth feel compelled to answer our nosy protagonists' questions and accusations. If Roy, Priscilla, or any of the others had been sensible, they would have just said "Huh--I'd like to help, but I'm busy right now."

--Foolish political diatribe. For no reason whatsoever, Walters has one of her characters (George--was that ironic, Minny?) spew silly anti-Bush/Blair emesis on a few pages. It has nothing to do with the plot, and it just makes her seem like a foaming, impractical, and close-minded liberal.

She's Minette Walters, and she's great. Her books have psychological credibility and almost always grip you with an unshakable chill of foreboding until you reach the last page. This one wasn't one of her best, but I'm still keeping my eye out for her next release, The Tinder Box.

5 out of 5 stars Minette Walters keeps getting better........2006-02-17

This is one of the best mysteries written in the last few years. The characters are remarkable as are the analogies one can draw between them. Meanwhile, the plot is detailed and leaves the reader really wanting to know what happened in the sordid events of thirty years before. The only flaw in the writing is that too many of the characters seem to remember too many of the details from so long ago.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible, Horrible Novel.......2005-11-11

Howard Stamp was convicted of murdering his grandmother in 1970. Many people, including George Gardener, believed that Howard Stamp was railroaded. Unfortunately, Stamp commited suicide in prison, but Gardener still wants to clear his name. She enlists the help of Jonathan Hughes, an anthropologist who had previously written about Stamp. Hughes and Gardener stumble across evidence that leads them down a dangerous path towards the real killer.

This book was terrible. This was my first encounter with Minette Walters and I am not sure if I will be giving her another try. The plot was boring, the characters were flat, the first 150 pages of the book were spent on an argument between Hughes and Gardener...It was just terrible. I wish I hadn't spent my money on it, it was that poor.

I can definitely say I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, unless they were holding a book burning and then I would toss this one on the pile. I would give this novel 0 stars if Amazon allowed it.

        Book Description

How should we deal with mental disorder - as an "illness" like diabetes or bronchitis, as a "problem in living", or what? This book seeks to answer such questions by going to their roots, in philosophical questions about the nature of the human mind, the ways in which it can be understood, and about the nature and aims of scientific medicine. The controversy over the nature of mental disorder and the appropriateness of the "medical model" is not just an abstract theoretical debate: it has a bearing on very practical issues of appropriate treatment, as well as on psychiatric ethics and law. A major contention of this book is that these questions are ultimately philosophical in character: they can be resolved only if we abandon some widespread philosophical assumptions about the "mind" and the "body", and about what it means for medicine to be "scientific". The "phenomenological" approach of the twentieth-century French philosopher, Maurice Merleau-Ponty is used to question these assumptions. His conception of human beings as "body-subjects" is argued to provide a more illuminating way of thinking about mental disorder and the ways in which it can be understood and treated. The conditions we conventionally call "mental disorders" are, it is argued, not a homogeneous group: the standard interpretation of the medical model fits some more readily than others. The core mental disorders, however, are best regarded as disturbed ways of being in the world, which cause unhappiness because of deviation from "human" rather than straightforwardly "biological" norms. That is, they are problems in how we experience the world and especially other people, rather than in physiological functioning - even though the nature of our experience cannot ultimately be separated from the ways in which our bodies function. This analysis is applied within the book both to issues in clinical treatment and to the special ethical and legal questions of psychiatry. Written by a well known philosopher in an accessible and clear style, this book should be of interest to a wide range of readers, from psychiatrists to social workers, lawyers, ethicists, philosophers and anyone with an interest in mental health.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great survey of philosophical problems relevant to psychiatry.......2007-06-12

Matthews explores the Cartesian model for psychiatry that treats the body as a causal mechanism within a deterministic conception; this model, however, is inadequate for a field which purports to study the meaning of experiences: mental illness is not a breakdown of the "brain" per se, but a maladaptation to our environment. As such, mental illness needs to be conceived on new terms: Matthews proposes a model based on Merleau-Ponty's "body-subject" conception of perceiving beings.

Merleau-Ponty's human being is an embodied person foremost; our very being manifests through our presence, our bodily actions. For example, when I become excited to see someone I haven't for a long time, the pitch and tone of my voice change, I wave my arms, smile, and so on. My excitement is manifest in my actions: we cannot say it exists separately from them.

Matthews' new model for a psychiatry of body-subjects is not the strength of this work. The first half of the book is an explication of basic philosophical problems, such as objectivity-subjectivity, causality-correlation, explained in terms of their relevance to psychiatry. Several chapters towards the later part then explicate the body-subject, while later chapters delve into legal and ethical implications of the new schema. Matthews' new model is not explicated in detail, it remains vague and at superficial levels of distinguishing between possible dualisms. Perhaps this is because Matthews gets lost in simple examples; there are pages and pages of examples taken from every day experience that are described "experientially". However, lacking any poetical prowess, these establish nothing more than what just a few sentences could explicate. The dualisms these examples try to uncover, however, pervade the work to the extent that they become definitive for the body-subject schema itself; Matthews for example, relies heavily on his distinction between causal-explanation and meaning-explanation.

Overall, this work is indispensable to those interested in foundations of thinking of mental illness; however, the model should be carefully thought and deeply examined by those interested in its implications.

          Book Description

In 1970 Howard Stamp, a retarded 20-year-old, was convicted on disputed evidence of brutally murdering his grandmother in her Dorset home. Less than three years later he was dead, driven to suicide by self-hatred and relentless bullying by other prisoners. A fate befitting a murderer, perhaps, but what if he was innocent? When 34-year-old anthropologist Dr. Jonathan Hughes re-examines Stamps case for a book on injustice, his research into the written evidence leads him to believe that Stamp was wrongly convicted. But is the forgotten story of one friendless young man compelling enough to persuade Jonathan to confront the real murderer? One person believes it is. George Gardener, sixty, has been trying to bring Stamps case to public attention for years and has unearthed new evidence that might exonerate him. But Gardener needs the young academic on board if it is to be used to maximum effect. On the face of it, there is no similarity between the illiterate Stamp and the highly educated Hughes, yet their lives resonate through their damaged childhoods and their mutual sense of exclusion. With the threat of war in Iraq dominating British hearts and minds, there begins a battle closer to home: an attempt to prove a grotesque miscarriage of justice. But if the killer is still at large....
