Customer Reviews:
Good For the all around athlete.......2007-05-29
I'm a soldier currently deployed in Afghanistan (airborne infantry). I ordered the book to try to pick up on a new sport. The pictures and descriptions in the book are very descriptive and very helpful in learning the moves. Although I would consider this a great book for the beginner boxer or someone trying to improve, the lifting section could use alittle more detail. I would also like to see alittle more about nutrition. Other than that, the technique and fundamentals described in this book are excellent.
Good introduction.......2006-11-24
Fighting Fit is a solid introduction for boxing that's easy to follow even if you have no prior experience. Its combination of sparse text and extensive photography is a good way to learn punches, defensive moves, combinations and so on. I have a few minor quibbles that prevent me from giving the book five stars - there's no discussion of the speed bag, and the weight training information is minimal - but all in all it's well worth the price.
New to boxing.......2005-04-21
I bought this book wanting to both get in shape and learn boxing skills. I felt it was excellent in both areas. For those of us without access to a gym or a trainer, or without the time to access a gym or a trainer, as some have mentioned, this is the closest thing to having a trainer with you. The book uses all black and white photos which I am sure is to reduce cost, but they are quite clear and get the point across. To hopefuls out there, wanting to learn how to box, just get in shape or both, this book in my opinion is to boxing what a Chilton manual is to car repair.
Disappointing.......2004-04-23
As the earlier book by the same authors (Boxer's start-up) was an excellent book, I was expecting this to be at least a four-star book. I was badly disappointed, however.
Much of the written material in the book is taken directly from the earlier book, and there is not much text added. Instead, the book relies heavily on photographs. There is nothing wrong with that, per se, but it places high demands on the quality of the pictures. Sadly, the pictures don't fill the expectations. They are not entirely bad, however, as you can see what you are supposed to see from the pictures. But they are far form good quality.
Much of the book is filled with different punch combinations, counters and flow drills. In these pages, there is hardly any text, instead the reader is supposed to study the pictures and learn from them. This is hardly satisfying, and there is a genuine need for exhaustive written instructions. There is also some instructions about stretching, weight training and sparring, but these issues are not given very thorough presentation.
There is some merit to this book, but you need to have a more complete textbook to support the pictures in this book. For one, the book is missing a complete training program, instead the reader (beginner-intermadiate level) is supposed to construct one on his own, based on the limited information given in this book.
Fighting Fit.......2004-04-09
This book is perfect if your looking to enter the sport of boxing, learn some self defence or just get into shape. Easy to to understand and follow, the authors go into detailed description of punches, defense moves, footwork, bag drills, partner drills and sparring drills. The thing that sets this book apart from others though, is all the pictures. Every move or technique described in this book has a picture to go along with it. I have read many boxing techniques and training guides and highly recommend "Fighting Fit" for any amature.

Terrific Supplement for the Fighting Man.......2007-07-28
This short guide to keeping fit for the fight game is as good as it gets. Great pics, easy-to-follow instructions for drills makes for a hassle-free supplement to anyone's training regimen. It isn't geared to pros or novices as there aren't much tips for improving punching or strategies in the ring; in reading through this book, the reader must keep in mind that the content is primarily focused on building or prepping one for the rigors of boxing training. So for those looking to get a headstart to prepare themselves for intensive boxing training, Oliver suggests you get in proper shape. This book will undoubtedly help you.
great fitness book, especially for guys.......2007-05-11
i bought this book for my boyfriend. he is not a boxer but likes the sport and is into fitness. he REALLY liked it. the pictures are good and the explanations are great and there's a lot of good information in the book. i might even borrow it for some ideas for my own workout.

Fighting Fit: Complete SAS Fitness Training Guide.......2005-10-19
Adrian Weale served in British Army Intelligence working with various elite units of the British Armed Forces. His book is derived primarily from his contacts within the SAS, Paras and Marine Commandos.
Weale covers the human body, nutrition (including a meal plan), exercises, equipment, navigation (for those who will take part in cross-country training) and several different programs.
His programs include several for people out of shape (Desk Driver's, Semi-Pro, and Fighting Fit) and one each for those preparing for SAS, Para and Commando training. These last three training programs contain a rigorous schedule which will challenge even the relatively fit. The SAS program emphasizes movement over moutainous terrain, while Para focuses on speedy movement over shorter distances and Commando splits between running and upper body strength.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but not really useful........2002-09-14
This book is interesting because it covers topics from fitness, to self-defense, to rope and wall climbing.
The self-defense recommendations are sometimes bizarre and dangerous however. An example of this is a punch where one bends forward 90 degrees at the waist and extends the arm straight out - making the body into a giant 90 degree angle. This particular move is biomechanically and tactically dangerous in real self-defense - and there are others like it.
I don't care what a person's credentials are - there is a lot of stuff taught to armed forces all over the world.
The book has some interest, it just isn't good for what it's intended.

Book Description
Proven techniques for creating vivid, believable characters
Want to bring characters to life on the page as vividly as fine actors do on the stage or screen? Getting into Character will give you a whole new way of thinking about your writing. Drawing on the Method acting theory that theater professionals have used for decades, this in-depth guide explains seven characterization techniques and adapts them for the novelist's use.
In this unique and practical book, you'll discover concepts that will help you understand and communicate the behavior, motivation, and psychology of every fictional character you create. Examples from classic and contemporary novels show you how these techniques have been used to dazzling effect by Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Steve Martini, Anne Rivers Siddons, and others. These simple yet highly effective techniques will help you:
- Create characters whose distinctive traits become plot components
- Determine each character's specific objectives and motivations
- Write natural-sounding dialogue rich in meaning
- Endow your characters with three-dimensional emotional lives
- Use character to bring action sequences to exuberant life
- Write convincingly about any character facing any circumstance
Customer Reviews:
I'll never look at my characters the same again.......2006-06-30
The reviewers have said it all, and yet I feel the need to add my two cents as an author and a 'how-to' book collector.
I struggled with my characters from the beginning and since reading Brandilyn's book I can understand why. Never before have I read a book that gives such explicit examples of how to create characters of depth and motivation.
My copy is dog-eared, highlighted, scribbled, and has lovingly earned a spot on my shelf as a book I could not write without. I can't recommend GETTING INTO CHARACTER enough for new authors and those who think they have nothing more to learn.
Not half bad.......2005-11-05
An interesting analogy of how writers are like actors and must get into their characters' heads in order to portray them in a convincible style. Filled with good ideas.
Combination of Lajos Egri + John Cleaver on Character.......2005-05-29
This book seemed to be one-half Lajos Egri (The Art of Creative Writing) and one-half John Cleaver (Immediate Fiction). Like both of these authors, Brandilyn Collins explains how to create well-developed, compelling characters that you can let loose in your stories.
All of the author's techniques tie back to Stansislavsky's "Method Acting." Each chapter starts with an analysis of one of techniques of Method Acting. Then that technique is summarized in terms of ficiton writing. The remaining chapter fills in the details and gives examples.
In addition to the techniques of character development, the author presents several narrative frameworks for the overall plotting of the story. She also discusses crafting each scene using character objectives that flow from the character's Inner Values.
The chapter on dialog was interesting. Here, the author shows you how to link the hidden-message of dialog (sub-texting) back to the richly-developed psychological profile, or inner values, of the character.
I liked the book very much - particularly her conceptualization of Method Acting back to narrative writing and her well-explained examples. This book is different than many others describing character development. The author also includes exercises that the reader can pursue.

THE BEST "HOW-TO-WRITE" BOOK FOR BEGINNERS OR ADVANCED.......2005-01-17
This is the best "how-to-write" book I have read (and I have over 30 "how-to" books on my shelf now that I have studied). This is great for beginning fiction writers or advanced writers - anyone who wants to make their characters and their stories come to life.
Brandilyn Collins' book GETTING INTO CHARACTER: SEVEN SECRETS A NOVELIST CAN LEARN FROM ACTORS has opened my eyes to how to make my characters sparkle on the pages.
In fact, Brandilyn's chapter on the "Personalizing" process led me to some new realizations about my major character in my current novel-in-progress. I discovered things about my character that I would never have dreamed up without the steps that Brandilyn recommended.
I also loved the entire "Inner Rhythm" chapter in Brandilyn's book - that is be the perfect way to capture on paper the "pace" of the story along with the exact thoughts and movements of my characters. And the "Emotion Memory" chapter is fantastic. I can see how much easier it is to capture some of the inner turmoil that my characters are facing in my novel by using what Brandilyn suggested.
Even if you think you don't need to buy another "how-to-write" book, I would HIGHLY recommend Brandilyn Collins' book.

What more can I say?.......2003-03-01
The other reveiwers have it right. After studying more than 30 titles on the craft of writing, I can say that this is by far the most useful work on developing believable and well-rounded characters that I have seen to date. The information is timely, practical, and accessible. The examples are well-organized and perfectly suited to the material. The writer can take what he learns and put into practice immediately. Excellent work!

A PAINLESS WAY TO LEARN SAT WORDS
17-year-old Will Lassiter has lived his entire life in the peaceful comfort of Red Fork. When his new neighbor, Dr. Octavio Perez, suddenly disappears, Will uncovers a mystery that merges the present with the past -- a deadly secret that's been locked away for nearly a century. That's when things start to get really strange.
Unlike other SAT preparation books, The Ring of McAllister incorporates key SAT vocabulary right into the story. So rather than memorize lists and definitions, you learn the words in context. SAT words are defined in a glossary at the back of the book. It's a pain-free way to build your vocabulary -- and to score higher on the test!

my son does not like this book.......2007-09-23
The concept is good, but my son, who usually likes to read, hates this book.
My 15 yr old son loved this book.......2007-02-13
My 15-yr-old son got this book to read and report on for an assignment. He loved the mystery and said he learned some of the SAT vocabulary at the same time. He never reads for fun, but actually read it whenever he could, finishing it before he needed to. This is great testament to the quality of the story. We'd love to find more of this type stories for him to read.
Plain AMAZING!!!.......2005-12-29
This is an amazing story. I personally think people shouldn't just read this book for its educational value. I agree it serves its purpose rather well. It teached me the vocabulary and improved my skill of using context clues. The only problem was the glossary in the back. But what was the reason it was so helpful?
The main reason was because of the amazing story. The only reason people would want to keep reading was because of its great plot. It has an amazing combination of horror and mystery. It expresses a great deal of problems a person could face in a life. Totally worth every penny I paid for it. I surely suggest this book to everyone not only looking to improve their vocabulary, but also trying to read a good book. I only hope that Mr. Marantz would write more books. Plain AMAZING!!!
The Ring of McAllister.......2005-10-21
The Ring of McAllister is a very good book written by Robert Marantz. A mystery that is filled with over one thousand vocabulary words that must be known for students taking the SAT test, has a glossary with the words highlighted so that the reader learns the words while reading the text.
The Ring of McAllister is a mystery that took place in a very small town called Red Fork. The main Characters are seventeen year old high school students that are just starting their summer vacation as their junior year just ended. The characters names are Will, Katie, Ty, Laura, and Dr. Perez, which is Laura's father. There are a couple of others but they weren't really main characters.
Will, Katie, and Ty have been best friends for years. There is a mansion next door to Will's house known as Stone Manor. In Stone Manor years ago, a man named McAllister lived there and was killed and disappeared. Everyone that lived in the house after McAllister bad things happened to. A young girl named Laura Perez moves into Stone Manor with her father, Dr. Perez. Strange things start happening like her falling down the stairs, but they figured that it was just a coincidence or bad luck. But when Dr. Perez suddenly disappears, that's when the fun begins.....
A brillant way to learn SAT vocabulary.......2004-08-24
This book was amazing. Ok, I admit, the beginning was a little slow. But once you get into it, you just cannot put it down. It's a captivating read that kept me at the edge of my seat. All the while, I was learning SAT vocabulary. It's like killing two birds with one stone!!! WOW
