Book Description
There are currently two major theories about the role of the hippocampus, a distinctive structure in the back of the temporal lobe. One says that it stores a cognitive map, the other that it is a key locus for the temporary storage of episodic memories. A. David Redish takes the approach that understanding the role of the hippocampus in space will make it possible to address its role in less easily quantifiable areas such as memory. Basing his investigation on the study of rodent navigation--one of the primary domains for understanding information processing in the brain--he places the hippocampus in its anatomical context as part of a greater functional system.
Redish draws on the extensive experimental and theoretical work of the last 100 years to paint a coherent picture of rodent navigation. His presentation encompasses multiple levels of analysis, from single-unit recording results to behavioral tasks to computational modeling. From this foundation, he proposes a novel understanding of the role of the hippocampus in rodents that can shed light on the role of the hippocampus in primates, explaining data from primate studies and human neurology. The book will be of interest not only to neuroscientists and psychologists, but also to researchers in computer science, robotics, artificial intelligence, and artificial life.

Book Description
The first section of this volume corresponds to courses on the cytoskeleton, its various structures and its dynamics, especially during the cell cycle. The reductionist approach is favoured in this field and considerable effort is spent on finding out how these structures are built up from their component molecules, how they grow or decrease in size, how they interact with each other and with other cell components. The second section describes the endo membrane system of a eukaryotic cell and the regulated protein traffic that flows through it. Part III deals with the onset of higher levels of organization. Topics covered include the development of the central nervous system, the role of time in biology and theoretical models to describe biochemical and cellular oscillations. The volume concludes with a reflection on physics and biology and the author shares some of his thoughts on the different ways in which physicists and biologists tackle problems in their respective fields.
Product Description
The present book is complied from the first chapter of volume eighteen of Pt.Shriram Sharma Acharya Vangmaya series. It introduces neuro scientific, psychological and spiritual aspects of human brain and mind. Bioelectrical activities of the neuro-synaptic connections between million billions of neurons, information processing through the nervous system and the neuronal network and the mechanism of storage and retrieval of memory are discussed here along with the anatomy of the human brain and psychological depths of human mind. Major sections of this book deal with detailed analysis of the endocrine system and interrelationship of hormonal secretions and physiological, biochemical, mental and emotional variations.
The book also offers scientifically argued, lucid answers to some of our natural inquisitiveness concerning What are the functional centers in the brain, which might be responsible for exceptional memory ?. Hope it would inspire us to move deeper in the depths of the esoteric treasure bestowed by the Supreme Consciousness on our brain.

Book Description
Since the appearance of the John O'Keefe and Lynn Nadel book in which they proposed that the hippocampus provides an abstract, internal representation of the animal's environment, considerable conceptual progress in the area of navigational information processing has been achieved.
The purpose of the current work is to consolidate recent data and conceptual insights related to navigational insight processing in a format useful to both practitioners and advanced students in neuroscience.

Description:
Kainate-induced seizures result in hippocampal neurodegeneration and spatial learning deficits in rodents. Previous studies show that rofecoxib, a selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor, protects against kainate-induced hippocampal cell death 3 days after seizures. Our aim was to determine whether rofecoxib attenuates visuospatial learning deficits and late neuronal death after kainate-induced seizures. Seizures were induced in Sprague-Dawley rats with kainic acid (10 mg/kg, i.p.). Eight hours later, animals received rofecoxib (10 mg/kg; n = 15) or vehicle (dimethylsulfoxide, n = 11). Animals were then treated daily for additional 2 or 9 days. Visuospatial learning was assessed in the Morris water maze (MWM) on days 5-9 after seizures. Seizure animals learned the MWM task significantly slower than non-seizure controls, but seizure animals showed higher swim speed (P
< 0.05). Seizure animals receiving rofecoxib for 2 days showed no significant improvement in acquisition of the task compared to the vehicle group, even though mean latencies in the rofecoxib group were shorter from the third trial day onwards. This tendency was lost when rofecoxib was given for 9 days. TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labelling showed cell death in limbic structures 9 days after seizures. The time course of kainate-induced hippocampal cell death might be delayed by rofecoxib treatment, as the attenuation of cell death observed 3 days after seizures was no longer present after 9 days. We conclude that even though increasing evidence points to an injurious role of cyclooxygenase-2 products in acute brain injury processes, rofecoxib treatment failed to attenuate seizure-induced visuospatial learning deficits and the late phase of hippocampal neurodegeneration.

Book Description
Known for his superior technical abilities and his unique and innovative moves, Jean Jacques Machado now presents his entire Brazilian jiu-jitsu system in book form for the first time. Detailed is a complete repertoire of jiu-jitsu moves to handle any situation that arises, whether on the mat or on the street. Techniques are not presented in isolation, but rather through a series of moves that guide practitioners from an initial threat or opportunity all the way through to a submission hold. The subtle interplay between various strategies is depicted, allowing students to choose the right attack or defense every time. More than 100 step-by-step martial arts positions are demonstrated.
Customer Reviews:
Great organization.......2006-03-08
Unlike some other reviewers, I found this book very well organized and clear. I had felt that my cross mount attacks were few and ineffective. This book is grouped by body positions thus it was easy for me to home in and study that section alone.
I did not feel that the illustrations needed more info since that is what my class and instructor is for. The book's forte is where JJ shows multiple counter attack dependent on the the opponents reaction.
I did not have unrealistic expectations that the moves in this book will be effective against all my opponents. Especially since all techniques shown are nothing new. The book is informative to me because it showed transitions and options that are available with these finite techniques.
All-Belts Excellence!.......2006-02-02
Another in what has become a rapidly growing series (mostly co-written by Kid Pelligro) from Invisible Cities Press, backed by the same UAE Shiek who holds the ADCC Submission Grappling Championships (now every two years), Jean-Jacques Machado (nephew of Carlos Gracie sr.) turns up this time to share his ideas on sport Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Grappling.
Like his cousin, Royler's, Submission Grappling book, this volume is a HUGE improvement over the first two. Machado starts off by giving his thoughts on competition, everything from his noted 'attacking' style to how to deal with injuries, however the bulk of the book is the big, glossy, full-color photo section, split into two parts: one with the Gi/Kimono, and one without.
Machado is one of the very few BJJ people to prove himself a finisher in no-gi Submission Grappling as well. His 'go for the finish' mentality not only shows his own creativity and energy, but electrifies a sport just as often known for stalling.
Some of the techniques shown are risky, dependant on speed and surprise, but the sheer number of different entires shown for most of the old standards (armbar, omoplata, triangle, etc.) will almost certainly prove 'new' to most readers.
If you want a book from this series, and you enjoy both the Gi/Kimono and the no-gi, this is the one to get.
Good Technique - Even for lower level belts.......2005-08-30
This book shows ALOT of tech. that you can apply to your game no matter what belt you currenty hold. I'm not a black belt (YET)but found many moves that I have aready been taught in class.
Great great book.......2005-02-05
This is simply the best grappling/BJJ book I've ever seen. First of all this book is not for begginers, it's for intermediate and above level grapplers. This book isn't an encyclopedia of techniques, it's more like a general strategy guide. The main idea is to open up your mind so you will think of some of your own combinations and variations of moves and setups taught. I'd like to use quote from the book to explain:
"One thing I've noticed is that often instruction is too rigid. Students often are taught to commit moves to memory and to repeat them the same way every time. You can get by with this at the beginning levels, but by the time you reach the advanced levels-the focus of this book-you will find yourself at a serious disadvantage if your moves don't flex to deal with the dynamics of each individual situation. That's why in this book I've tried to give you lots of options, and encouraged you to think for yourself. Because in the real world things don't always go down like they do in a textbook, and if you are the one who can create on the spur of the moment, you are going to win."
This is EXACTLY what happens by reading and practicing the things in this book. I've never seen this idea conveyed in any books before, which is one of the main reasons I rated it so high.
The book has techniques for both gi and no-gi, although most of the gi techniques will work for no gi too. This is because, if you didn't already know, Jean Jacques Machado was born with no fingers on one of his hands. With that said it is truely amazing how skilled he is with such a serious handicap. Since he has no fingers he can't grip the gi obviously, so he uses his legs alot more than usual. JJM simply thinks differently than most people because of this and it shows in his matches.
My only complain with the book is the actual detail given to the moves, but it is only a minor complaint and I still easily give this book 5 starts, and recommened that every grappler needs to buy this book.
No katas????.......2004-03-02
This book is like a reference for Jean Jacques Machado's class. Almost every technique in the book is one that he teaches in class. It is not a book for beginners but you also do not have to be Jean Jacques to do the moves. You should have some training under your (blue or higher) belt. As with all of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, there are many details that effect the outcome and execution of your technique as well as the reaction of your partner in defending the move. Not all of the details and variables are (or can) be covered in the book. It is a very good reference especially if you are training under a black or high belt that can help you refine your techniques. As anyone in jiu-jitsu should know, there are no prescribed movements. Everything is dependent on "action-reaction" because the guy you're fighting is going to be fighting back for real! There are no katas to practice.

Customer Reviews:
Perfect for its size!.......2007-02-22
The publishers have stuffed a great deal of information into these tiny, paperback books. They're great to have on-the-go, as they are not bulky or heavy at all, but contain all the general (and sometimes specific) information that you will need at that time. I also bought these books for other languages.
Just want to mention that..........2006-10-29
for starters this book is great and adequate enough.
But several important components of french grammar are missing from this book. Thus if you are somewhere around intermediate level, go buy a more advanced french grammar reference book. This skimmed version is for starters who have no previous knowledge of french, and want to have a general grasp of the language. Otherwise you are going to waste your money.
Good buy!.......2006-07-27
I think this book is very helpful and a very nice source if you do not have much time to study French with classes etc... It is very small and its advantage is that you can easily locate what you are looking for and especially since it provides you with the literal meaning of what you are saying but in English. This latter part has been really helpful for me since I can compare the English grammar with the French one. For example, a book might tell you what how to use the direct object... but if you are not even sure what a direct object is in your own language the whole explanation may not make much sense. I would definitely advise buying it.
Helpful but Lacking.......2001-06-07
I read through this book a few times to help me recall and extend my ability in French grammar. I found it very useful in helping me attain a decent level of proficiency in a short period of time; however, it lacked certain elements of French grammar. Ultimately this deficiency led me to buy Berlitz's French Grammar Handbook.
I don't agree with the cover of the book when it states that it contains everything needed for speaking and comprehension. It would have been helpful if it contained such elements as the pronoun usage of y and en as well as a mention of the past historic tense. When I tried to read _Le Petit Prince_ with the aid of this Resnick's book, I had trouble making out some of the sentences, but after purchasing the Berlitz book, I didn't have any problems.
Essential for Self Study.......2001-01-31
I recently spent two weeks taking an immersion course in French - in France. As a complete beginner to the language the classes were difficult at best since they were taught exclusively in French! While this method may be best for learning vocabulary, pronunciation and general speaking methods its not so good for grammar! I spent my evenings reading this book and it completely filled in the gaps about grammar rules, etc. In fact I highly recommend this book at a necessary supplement to any self study approach.

French verb conjugation made simple.......2007-01-12
This book will help you to master French verbs without doubt. This book achieves to present the intricate tense formation and use in a clear and simple format. It presents French tenses with clear definitions and well-created guided exercises. The book provides plenty of examples and practice exercises to master French verbs. The interactive CD is an excellent supplement to the text; it allows you to personalize the activities for specific needs. I use the CD to create my own flash cards and quizzes to practice words, and structures that were a challenge to me. I have one small problem with this book, even though the exercises are excellent and follow a clear format in the second part "French Verbs in Action" some tenses are presented in groups, which can be confusing and there are not practice exercises for some tenses. Since this is just a minor problem and the book goes well and beyond in presenting French verbs I will give it five stars.
Fantastic Verb Coverage.......2005-01-28
Whether you're a student of French, travelling abroad, or just want to learn to speak it, this book has got everything you need to know about verbs. It has practically every verb you can think of, tons that you never would think of, and all the tenses and conjugations of every single one. This is the essential French verb book.
Customer Reviews:
Don't miss the CD-ROM that comes with it.......2007-04-30
Books of word lists are everywhere, but this book has the tool that allows you to actually assimilate the words: the CD-ROM that comes with it. It has a fantastic, user-friendly flash card program that helps you absorb the words. There are probably a couple hundred words already entered into the program, some with pictures, all with a french native pronouncing the words. You can enter your own words (or phrases containing hundreds of characters) and practice them. You can store words and phrases in categories to retrieve later. So, as you learn new words and phrases from anywhere, like TV, magazines, conversation, you can enter them and review them later.

Book Description
At last, from the man who built it, comes the first-hand account of the rocky road that led us to our nation's first liberal talk-radio network.
After years of listening to monologues from right wing radio ideologues, Sheldon Drobny had enough. He decided the public airwaves needed balance, and that the way to get that balance was by starting his own full time, liberal radio network--what would become Air America Radio.
In Road to Air America, Drobny tells the story of the obstacles he and his wife Anita faced as they tried to make their concept for a progressive radio network a reality. Their journey took them through a world of politics, money, and media as they were helped by some of America's most powerful political figures. Determined to get his liberal radio network on the air, Drobny sold his concept to a team of radio executives only to have it fall back in his lap, nearly undone, five months later.
Today, after a high profile and bumpy launch, Air America is growing and going strong, on the air in 31 markets nationwide. Road to Air America is a story of determination and creativity, and it gives a first hand account of what it takes to get a progressive voice heard in a time when the conservative right dominates the radio airwaves. Drobny, a Chicago-based venture capitalist, philanthropist, and political activist, also has plenty to say about the destructive self-interest of today's corporate-owned media, and how it inspired his concept for a more balanced public discourse.
Customer Reviews:
A Decent Book on My Favorite Radio Network.......2006-03-16
This is a fairly dry and factual account of the forming of air america. It's interesting because it was written by one of the founders of Air America. I would have given it five stars, however the text is slightly dry. I would reccomend this book to Air America fans, or folks who are merely curious as to how it all started.
Road to Extremism.......2006-02-06
I was introduced to Air America while driving cross country. The sun had set and I was station surfing when I came upon a female talk show host. My first thought after listening for about 30 seconds was this could not be real. This had to be a parody done by some ultra-right winger trying to show how idiotic and hate-filled the extreme left was. I listened on for about 5 minutes and was convinced of my answer.
This parody though, had gone off the deep-end and was becoming unbelievable. The talk show host was rambling and making incoherent statements. The facts were obviously made up and the intense anger that spewed forth was getting on my nerves. This parody had gotten so unrealistic that I was about to change stations when she went to a station break. It was then that I learned that I had been listening to Randi Rhodes on Air America.
Wow, I was thunderstruck. I had been throughout college a classic liberal. But I had watched the Democratic Party get taken over by radical extremists. For some reason they were pushing us moderates out and we eventually became the Reagan Democrats. Today I am no longer a registered Democrat - since it is truly a foreign party to me and many middle of the road individuals.
It was a major disappointment to hear that what could have been a great radio station is degraded by a bunch of personalities who epitomize the radical hate-filled extremism that has caused the Democratic Party to lose the populist vote. With rare exception most of the stars of Air America will be considered to virulent and anti-American to garner anybody but the 10% of hard-core leftists.
With that in mind the book is little more of a cheerleading fest. The founders of Air America are under the impression that the major media outlets (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, New York Times, Washington Post) while undeniable liberal, are not liberal enough. Hence, we now have another media outlet voicing extremists rants. In some way Air America is partly to blame along with Michael Moore and other anti-American extremists for Kerry's defeat. When the average middle of the road American hears Air America, they are turned off. Perhaps they just don't know it, but they are truly shooting themselves in the foot.
Too Bad so sad.
Air America: The Voice Of Truth.......2005-10-17
[...] I don't care for anything they broadcast in the morning. The good stuff starts with Randi Rhodes, continues with Majority Report, and ends with the AMAZING Mike Malloy. Malloy speaks the truth night after night. He totally nails the farcicality of religious nonsense that is so brutally honest, so utterly true and cutting. I am a total fan of his piercingly intense HATRED of the hypocrisy and callowness that typifies the fundamentalist / conservative "Flying Monkey Right".
Thank God for Air America.......2005-04-04
I've been listening to Air America since day one. I tuned in for Al Franken but kept coming back for Randi Rhodes. She is the true star of Air America and probably the most brilliant commentator in the country. I listen in Los Angeles on KTLK AM-1150 every single day. If you want to know how this whole thing started pick up the book.
interesting tale of Air America Radio's beginning.......2005-01-05
I would give this book 3 stars for writing quality and 3.5 stars for content, but I was extremely interested in the story, so I'm rounding it up to 4 stars anyway. The author and his wife are venture capitalists who were convinced that corporate-owned media were unwilling to cover stories such as Prescott Bush's (W's grandfather) collaboration with the Nazis, and they were inspired to respond to the stranglehold of right-wing radio after Al Gore's "defeat" in the 2000 fiasco.
The story of the beginning of Air America Radio is quite compelling, though the book suffers from repetitiveness and a lack of detail. This is definitely the story from Drobny's point-of-view, and it lacks interesting information that he was either not privy to or chose not to share. For instance, I was interested to know how and why the station started, but when it came to learning about how they found and negotiated with on-air talent, we get only a little information about Al Franken and nothing about anybody else! Also, there was a bit of a fiasco with early financial dealing, but we get only sketchy details from Drobny.
As for content, while Mr. Drobny seems like a very nice fellow and an angel for the left, the book was unintentionally revealing regarding some of his weaknesses. On several occasions, we learn, the Drobnys were asked to give interviews to various networks about the new station, but they declined to do so, fearing that the story would get negative spin!! No wonder they had troube getting initial investors, when they were perpetually declining free publicity! Drobny spends a lot of time lamenting the difficulty in finding finanial backers, but it never seems to have occurred to him to have the station be a non-profit organization funded by contributors. I think a lot of people, myself included, would have donated generously to have a liberal radio station. Later, the management spent a fair amount of money having a PR firm decide on a name -- why not ask potential listeners to try their hand?
Despite the flaws of the people who started the station and the weaknesses of the book, I fully support AAR and bless the Drobnys for getting it on the air. It's a terrific radio alternative, and it has kept me sane through the mire that is politics today.
Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Drobny!
