Book Description

This book covers nearly all corners of the Great Lakes State. True to this motto, many of the routes follow the shoreline of lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie. From the rocky cliffs of Superior to the cattail marshes of Erie, each of these lakes has its own unique character and history begging to be explored. Inland, routes wind through deep forests, cool green in the summer, ablaze with color in the autumn, and blanketed with pristine snow in the winter. Anything from elk to orchids welcome those on foot trails on the route. The shores of clear rivers and lakes invite readers to enjoy them from the seat of a canoe or test them for trout or bass.

5 out of 5 stars A guide to touring the most breathtaking and scenic natural venues to be found in the Great Lake State.......2006-08-05

Beautifully illustrated with a wealth of color and black-and-white photographs, Backroads Of Michigan: Your Guide To Michigan's Most Scenic Backroad Adventures is a guide to touring the most breathtaking and scenic natural venues to be found in the Great Lake State. Backroads Of Michigan is a fairly large trade paperback, not meant to be carried in a pocket, purse or small backpack; yet its size also allows the fine detail in its illustrations to shine through, and its typeface is easy to read without a magnifying glass. The chapters are arranged by Michigan subsection, and cover everything from historical sites to river valleys to prime spots for beachcombing to state parks ideal for viewing wildflowers and much more, with maps and general directions. The text is written in a leisurely style that is as engaging to browse for pleasure as it is filled with practical information. Enthusiastically recommended for Michigan tourists and residents interested in the state's most wondrous sights, and also for armchair travelers.

    Book Description

Covering approximately 50,000 square miles, the Ozarks is an upland region that spans four states--Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Illinois. In this beautifully illustrated, practical field guide, ecologist and botanist Thomas E. Hemmerly identifies more than 600 species of Ozark flowering plants. Ozark Wildflowers is the only book with full color photographs that covers all flowering plants of the Ozark region, including the Ouachita Mountains and Crowley's Ridge.

Hemmerly's primary focus is herbaceous plants, but he also includes an assortment of trees, shrubs, and woody vines with showy flowers. He conveniently organizes the species descriptions primarily by color and secondarily by the grand group--monocot or dicot--to which they belong. To further assist the reader, Hemmerly has included a glossary, an appendix of Ozark natural areas, a bibliography, and an index.

In addition to serving as an identification guide, Ozark Wildflowers features plants in the context of their environment and the regions where they occur. Hemmerly surveys other plants and animals that form communities with wildflowers and describes the soil, water, climate, and geology that influence Ozark ecology. The author also provides valuable information regarding any medical or ethnobotanical uses of the plants discussed.

      Book Description

When most people think of the Chicago metropolitan area they usually don't envision captivating natural beauty, but within a 55-mile radius of the city there are no less than five distinctive ecosystems, including tall-grass prairies, oak savannas, forests, lakeshores, and wetlands. Several of the natural communities preserved here are among the rarest in the world, including 181 species listed as endangered or threatened. These spectacular color photographs uncover Chicago's natural wonders, including vistas of shooting stars at Chiwaukee Prairie, blazing star and goldenrod at Gensburg-Markham Prairie, a luscious green canyon at Camp Sagawau, a pair of sandhill cranes feeding along the banks of the Fox River, a carpet of trilliums in Messenger Woods, fog rising over the Volo bog, and a fox family venturing out at dawn.

        Book Description

Illinois Wilds is a natural history of the wildlands found in Illinois. This book is a historical depiction of what Illinois was like before settlement by Europeans, and is also a showcase of the remaining natural heritage of the state.

Historical accounts of Illinois described huge trees, vast grasslands and extensive wetlands. The seemingly endless prairies possessed a great of many-hued plants; a traveler could go from central Illinois to Wisconsin and encounter few trees. The prairies were teeming with life - passenger pigeons by the millions, snakes basking along the dusty trail, a myriad of grasshoppers darting through the air like arrows from a medieval army.

Even though the wilderness that was Illinois has long since departed, some wildness yet remains. Illinois' wilds may be as simple as a few violets growing in a lawn, a remnant of an ancient prairie grove, or as complex as hundreds of acres of cypress-tupelo swamp in southern Illinois.

The majority of photographs in this book are of plants and animals that can be used to determine a habitat or simply be seen by the casual visitor. It is the authors' wish that these images not only excite and emotionally involve the viewer, but that they also inspire movement towards a conservation ethic.

5 out of 5 stars Great Description of Illinois' Natural Beauty.......2002-11-10

This 1995 harcover describes Illinois' natural beauty beyond its highways, towns, and scattered villages. Sadly, Illinois ranks 49th of the states (Iowa is 50th) in the amount of land preserved in its virgin beauty before the arrival of European settlers, farmers, and lumberjacks. The authors catagorize the landscape of Illinois into 15 natural areas which include the following: unglaciated woods, gravel prairies, lake shore, marshes, bogs, seep springs, tallgrass prairie, prairie groves, sand prairies and savannas, hill prairies, easter n forests, rock ledges, southern ravines, southern swamps, and coastal plain forests. The photos are stunning and very beautiful. However, the location (e.g. state park, natural area, county) of where each photo was taken is rarely given! The text is short and easy to read for the layman, but long enough to give the hiker/outdoorsman/naturalist a basic understanding of the area described. A great book for anyone who wants to enjoy more of Illinois than can be seen from his or her car on I-55!

          Book Description

Corn State. Prairie State. Garden of the West. Each of these nicknames for the State of Illinois has a truth to tell. But not the whole truth. The world-class lens of Willard Clay reveals secrets about his home state that justify another nickname: the State of Hidden Delights. For WILD & SCENIC ILLINOIS, Willard Clay has crisscrossed the state's byways and trails in his search for the rare, the beautiful, the seldom-seen jewels of the Illinois landscape. WILD & SCENIC ILLINOIS is the most discerning and the most rhapsodic portrait of the natural face of Illinois ever published. Clay has gleaned his images from every province in Illinois, ranging across all seasons, times, and natural subjects. The photographs are systematically grouped into Illinois's various landscape provinces, described in an informative text by naturalist Robert Hutchinson. In the photographer's introduction, Willard Clay shares his tips for tackling the technical challenges of shooting the landscape of Illinois. Formerly a professor of botany, Clay traces the source of his photographic inspiration to his close and patient observation of the face of nature.

          5 out of 5 stars Chicago, Cops, a Priest, P.I.s and a Mystery, It's all Here.......2003-12-05

Nine years ago Peter Keegan stopped off at a topless bar for a drink, a fight broke out, he was arrested. An inconvenience, but not a big deal for most single guys, but Peter was a priest, is now a bishop and somebody is threatening to expose the incident. It would damage his career with the Church were it to come out, but why would anybody do such a thing? What could they possibly gain? Peter suspects his estranged half-brother, the acting chief of detectives of the Organized Crime Division in the Chicago Police Department.

He turns to Kirsten and Dugan for help. They are a husband-and-wife team-he's a lawyer, she's a PI-and together they run Wild Onion, Ltd., located in Chicago's Loop. Ex cop Kirsten is supposedly in charge of the agency, but she gets plenty of help, a lot of it unwanted, from Dugan, who can't stop worrying about her.

Right from the get go Kirsten has reservations about the case as she blames Peter's brother, Walter, the acting chief, for ending her father's career in the department, but they take the case and try their level best to unmask the bishop's tormentor, tracing Peter's problems back to a dark night in his past. Plus there are other forces at work here, like an anti government group, the enmity between the brothers and then, of course, there is a super twisty ending you'd never expect.

In more ways than one I was reminded of the old Thin Man series as I read though this delightful mystery. I don't know why, but I thought I'd be able to read for a bit, do my early morning chores, go downtown, make a bank deposit, have lunch with friends, then maybe read a little before I went to bed. But it didn't work out that way. The chores got put off till another day, the bank deposit got postponed till tomorrow and I missed lunch (didn't really want to go anyway), but fortunately I finished before dinner, because I was famished.

          5 out of 5 stars A wll designed mystery.......1999-12-31

Dealing with the devil means you must dance to his tune. However, when the individuals involved in the malevolent tango consists of a Chicago Bishop and his brother, the police department Organized Crime Division acting chief of detectives, one hardly suspects evil. Bishop Peter Keegan believes his half-brother Walter is nothing less than Satan personified. When Peter begins to receive blackmail threats involving an incident in his past as well as getting the sensation that someone is stalking him, the bishop feels Walter is involved.

Due to his sensitive position, Peter knows he cannot turn to the police. He has no idea what Walter wants, but figures his sibling will tell him when he is ready to do so. Instead of waiting and fretting, Peter hires Wild Onions, a private detective security firm to help him. The owners Kirsten and Dugan agree to take the Bishop on as a client even as they quickly understand that any dealing involving Walter is a struggle to survive.

A BEER AT A BAWDY HOUSE rotates the narration among three different players (Dugan, Kirsten, and Peter). The technique works very well as David J. Walker makes the three characters feel so genuine. Dugan and Kirsten will remind readers of "Hart to Hart." The flawed Bishop has insecurities that turn him into a human being. The mystery is well-designed and special.

Chicago investigator and lawyer, wife and husband team Kirsten and Dugan are working together again to investigate what looks like a penny-ante problem: the theft of $2112.50, donations to the Committee to Rescue Emerald Woods, from the grassroots organization's treasurer. It seems like an open-and-shut case. But when it becomes clear that one group who might take offense by CREW's activities is a powerful Chicago land developer, and that the supposedly small-time theft of the money has been accompanied by some very serious threats, the case gets complicated-and deadly-in a hurry.Edgar Award nominee David J. Walker's Wild Onion series-which includes A Ticket to Die For and A Beer at a Bawdy House-features two of the most appealing and creative series characters in mystery fiction today, and this cleverly drawn new installment is sure to be a success with longtime fans as well as those new to Walker's fine work

4 out of 5 stars The characters make the story.......2000-11-29

Chicago's Wild Onion, Ltd. is an investigative and security firm consisting of a lawyer and a private detective. Duggan and Kirsten are also happily married to one another except when she feels the restraints of their matrimonial binds. Those feelings often lead her to do flaky things.

Kirsten accepts the case of twenty-four-year-old Eudora Ragsdale, mother of twins, accused of absconding with $2000 raised to save Emerald Woods from developers. The case seems almost trivial until someone tries to kill Kirsten and her spouse. Another individual follows Kirsten until he is found murdered. It appears as if an unknown assailant will kill to insure plans for Emerald Woods are carried out, leaving the Wild Onion team to uncover the identity of the murderer before they are added to the count.

Well-written environmental mysteries are somewhat rare, but THE END OF EMERALD WOODS is an excellent example of what the sub-genre offers. Edgar nominee David J. Walker creates a fine mystery in his latest Wild Onions installment. However, as usual it is the intriguing married couple conducting business that turns this novel into a winner.

              Book Description

A Place on the Team is the inside story of how Title IX revolutionized American sports. The federal law guaranteeing women's rights in education, Title IX opened gymnasiums and playing fields to millions of young women previously locked out. Journalist Welch Suggs chronicles both the law's successes and failures-the exciting opportunities for women as well as the commercial and recruiting pressures of modern-day athletics.

Enlivened with tales from Suggs's reportage, the book clears up the muddle of interpretation and opinion surrounding Title IX. It provides not only a lucid description of how courts and colleges have read (and misread) the law, but also compelling portraits of the people who made women's sports a vibrant feature of American life.

What's more, the book provides the first history of the law's evolution since its passage in 1972. Suggs details thirty years of struggles for equal rights on the playing field. Schools dragged their feet, offering token efforts for women and girls, until the courts made it clear that women had to be treated on par with men. Those decisions set the stage for some of the most celebrated moments in sports, such as the Women's World Cup in soccer and the Women's Final Four in NCAA basketball.

Title IX is not without its critics. Wrestlers and other male athletes say colleges have cut their teams to comply with the law, and Suggs tells their stories as well.

With the chronicles of Pat Summitt, Anson Dorrance, and others who shaped women's sports, A Place on the Team is a must-read not only for sports buffs but also for parents of every young woman who enters the arena of competitive sports.

              5 out of 5 stars A quick correction.......2006-02-20

Just to let people know, the very nice Publisher's Weekly review contains a fairly serious error. The reviewer states: "In 1976, Yale rowers made headlines when they stripped nude, "Title IX" written across their chests and backs, to protest the cutting of sports of 'lesser importance,' like crew, in colleges across the nation. 'These are the bodies Yale is exploiting,' the men said in a written statement."
This is not at all what happened. As commemorated in the film "A Hero for Daisy"--and noted in my book--female rowers at Yale were the ones who stripped, to protest the fact that they had no boathouse in which to change or store their equipment. The episode made national news. Just didn't want anyone to get the wrong impression.
              Thanks!

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-10-17

Bottom line, I got what I was expecting and what I paid for. It's in really great shape.

5 out of 5 stars a must for every language teacher.......2006-08-07

Covers all current techniques for language teaching. Impartial treatment of each method and good arguments of how they may be actually implemented.

3 out of 5 stars A bit of history mixed with important techniques.......2006-06-30

The methodologies presented in the first six chapters are each a compendium of obsolete second language teaching techniques. The information is interesting but not valuable. In its later chapters, this book successfully describes common methods used in today's classroom. It is a fairly good reference book for beginning ESL teachers to have.

5 out of 5 stars A title is not necessary for a review.......2005-09-21

Excellent book for different methods of teaching.

5 out of 5 stars A solid review of methods of language teaching.......2001-05-30

I am an ESL teacher and I teach Methods and Materials of TESOL at the University Level and I am very pleased with this book. It is clearly written and the methods, from the Audio-Lingual Method to Content Based Instruction, are presented in a format that facilitates pre-service and in-service teachers' understanding of the theoretical background of language teaching, and the book provides relevant follow up activities that promote professional growth and allow the learner to apply what they have just learned. My students have given me very positive feedback about the chioce of this as one of the texts that we use, and they all say that they wish to keep the book on the shelves of their professional libraries.I refer to it frequently as both a professional in the feild and as a teacher educator.

                Book Description

This book appears at a time when the crisis rhetoric about schools, teaching, and learning to read is extremely high. There is a rising call within the profession for a balanced perspective on reading. Balancing Principles for Teaching Elementary Reading aspires to help set the agenda for improving the quality of literacy instruction in the United States--by recentering the debate from "What's better, 'whole language' or 'phonics'?" to "What can we do in reading instruction to prepare all children for the literacy demands of the next century?"

The authors, all members of the professional community of reading educators, work on a daily basis with teachers in classrooms, prospective teachers, clinicians, and tutors. Their goal for this book is to represent what they have learned about effective teaching and learning as members of this community. It is written with four purposes in mind:
                * to offer a principled conception of reading and learning to read that is considerate of both the personal dimensions of literacy acquisition as well as the changes that are taking place in society,
                * to summarize key findings from the research that relate specifically to effective teaching practices,
                * to describe current practices in reading instruction with specific comparisons to the principles of effective practice that are identified, and
                * to suggest an action agenda that is school-based and designed to promote positive changes in the quality of instruction.

This text offers a perspective for teaching that provokes members of the reading education community to think about their underlying beliefs about teaching and their shared commitment to making schools more effective for the students they serve. It is envisioned as a resource to be used in building a community of learners--to be read with professional colleagues in a course of study, in a teacher-researcher book club, or in some type of in-service setting. Readers are encouraged to debate the ideas presented, to challenge the authors' conceptions with their own reality, to make sense within a community about what action is desirable. Some specific suggestions and strategies are provided as springboards for further exploration and action.

The author of The Official Guide to Family Tree Maker 2005, Esther Yu Sumner, gratefully acknowledges the contributions of her editors. Jest before I began to glance at the index, as suggested, my eye fell upon the previous page (p. 350(. On that page there is some text dealing with "Copying and Pasting Text and Records of Individual." It says that "The following table contains the keyboard combinations you need to manipulate selected tex..." Unfortunately, there is no following table. Did the wonderful editors tire just before the last page of the book or can one expect more errors? I'd be interested in hearing about errors that other purchasers find.
