Fun read, but dated........2006-06-26
Masaaki Hatsumi's overview of the Japanese Ninja is a fun read that gives a fairly brief survey of Ninjutsu. As someone skeptical of the whole "ninja thing" I found it both informative and frustrating, that the author worked hard to dispel myths about the ninja and their powers and then turn around and wax esoteric on the very same topic.
Many of the photos in the book are not particularly well taken and tend to be fuzzy and dated, and the captions do little to make them any more clear.
Still, its a fun book that can be read quickly. I found the section on ninja tools particularly interesting.
Ninjutsu 101.......2006-04-21
I bought this book a long time ago when I first started learning Ninjutsu.
This is essential for anyone studying Ninjutsu, as it has (like the title says) history. Besides the history, it has other information on stances, weapons, and practices of Ninjutsu. There are also many pictures and drawings to help you along.
Like I said, if you are planning on taking Ninjutsu, if you are learning Ninjutsu now, or if you simply want to know the truth about where Ninjutsu came from (starting with the first Ninja), then this book is for you.
And you will never find a more credible source.

a good read.......2003-09-22
This is a definite must for beginning ninjutsu students. I found it extremely informative, even though some of the pictures are a little hard to identify. it has really interesting insight and description for all aspects of ninjutsu, as well as some interesting history. I found it especially helpful because there is not a ninjutsu school near me and therefore i have had to train by myself.

Really good book for anyone wanting to get in depth information about real ninjutsu. The book will defintly not teach you any techniques you can use but its very informative.

NOT His (Hayes) Best Work!!!.......2002-06-15
I was lucky enough to have bought this book used in mint condition for a very small amount of money. I cannot believe this title is selling for as much as it is to collectors. The book is excellent, but the same material can be found else were for a lot less. I will give a break down of each chapter, which there is, only five of:
Chapter One - History Behind The History. This part is a background and discussion of terminology and its history. This chapter also briefly covers over the major clans. It sets the pace for the rest of the book. A good alternate to this is Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi book "Ninjutsu - History And Tradition", which covers the same in greater detail.
Chapter Two - Religious And Spiritual Influences. This small chapter covers overviews of Hinto, the original faith of the Japanese people. As well as Buddhism and how it filtered into other spiritual aspects of the warrior breeds. A book with much of the same type of topic information is Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi book "Essence Of Ninjutsu.
Chapter Three - Ninja Combat Tools. I was a little disappointed in this chapter it only discussed two items. The Bojutsu (six foot staff) and Kunai (a casual banged out piece of iron, in the somewhat form of a blade or tool edge), Hayes went into great detail of both items techniques and employment. I was hoping to read more information on other tools and weapons but the book did not come through. I am not going to recommend a book on the staff because the titles are vast, but I will recommend a few titles on ninja weapons. Hayes book "The Ninja and their Secret Fighting Art", "Traditional Ninja Weapons" by Charles Daniel and "Exotic Weapons of the Ninja" by Campbell
Chapter Four - Ninja Espionage Networks. This area covers traditional techniques used to get close in to targets, with the use of disguise, theatrics and other forms concealment of ones true identity and purpose. Again this is one of the Hallmarks of the Ninja and Hayes uses a mere nine pages of text on this subject. A good alternate to this is "Ninja the Invisible Assassin" by Adams and again Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi book "Ninjutsu - History And Tradition".
Chapter Five - Ninja Guerrilla Warfare Techniques. I do not know were he came up with this title for this chapter. He covers this chapter in four pages of text, which goes into a hand full of ruses and stratagems. I found nothing unusual or different from other works here again a better alternate is Sun Tzu Art of War and "Ninja the Invisible Assassin" by Adams and again Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi book "Ninjutsu - History And Tradition".
This title had no end matter (bibliography, glossary, index). The book is heavily illustrated one of its high lights. The illustrations and B&W photos were clear.
As a final note, the book overall is good and ideal for novices of the study. This is and old title, which I am sure, was ahead of its time when published but now many books have come out (as I already listed above) that cover this material much better then Hayes work here. I noted to myself after receiving and reading this book, why he (Hayes) has not reprinted this title, sadly it is definitely not one of his bests works.

the author is a man who doesn't bluff and who tells you in a plain and clear way about the ninja arts. Especially peculiar is that he calls the weapons: 'tools'. And he has a good point there because ninja weapons can be used in more ways than ordinary weapons, they have multiple purposes. Good pictures, well written; a very good book; also suitable for someone who is very sceptic about ninja stuff. So put this one back in print! it's worth it!

I Agree---This Is An Amazing Book.......2007-02-09
I read all the reviews by other readers of this book and was surprised that everyone gave it 5 stars. After reading it, I have to agree with them. The things Sharon Ellison is teaching in this book are amazing. I wish I would have known about them sooner or that it was a part of my early education.
In any case, I want to spread the word about how to communicate in a non-defensive way. I am lending my copy of the book to everyone I know. It is more empowering than using defensive communication. And I really feel like it is necessary for the next step in our human evolution in order for our humanity to catch up with our technology (something Sharon Ellison writes about in the last chapters of the book).
I have no reservation in recommending this book.
One of the most practical books on communication and conflict resolution.......2006-03-28
I own a lot of books on listening, communication and conflict resolution. This book is one of the better ones because it presents a lot of useful concepts in an easy to apply manner.
The book begins by covering different communication styles and the thinking that underlies each style. It then goes on to present a non-defensive model and shows how it works, why it makes sense and how to put it into practice.
This book also talks about developing specific attitudes toward honesty and compassion. In other words, it is more than a text of communication techniques.
If you have read a lot in this area or a little, you will find this to be a very useful book. I also recommend "Crucial Conversations."
Awesome book!.......2003-07-31
I love this book and would wholeheartedly recommend it for every househould. Families and coworkers can have the best intentions, but if the language we use is what we all grew up with - a war-like model - then it can be confusing and frustrating when our interactions with people make us feel worse than before. I like how this book dissects the language we typically use (most of it rang all too familiar!), then offers new ways of communicating the same thing with language that helps the other person feel more receptive.
I've started using these techniques at home and at work, and I can't speak highly enough about it. I really learned a lot, and I feel more empowered in my communication skills, even in difficult of situations - not that I don't fall back into old ways. But when I do, it's a reminder of how different the results are when you use language consciously or unconsciously.
The concept of using language creatively to generate harmony is such an obvious but brilliant observation. The way the author breaks everything down into examples makes it seem really possible for anyone to transform and improve how they interact with the world. (The index of examples is really helpful!)
Helped me with defensive teen.......2002-05-12
I had bought this book, thinking it would teach my teen how to be less defensive. What it did was teach me how to deal with her defensiveness. I found that, by using the book's techniques, I was able to defuse potential battles and our house is much, much calmer as I can now defuse the power struggles she initiates. I also found that I have used the techniques many times with others in the family and with those in various groups to which I belong. I have been reading and re-reading the book ever since I got it a year ago, to ingrain the techniques. I cannot recommend this book more highly. It opened my eyes and changed my way of communicating.

I happened upon this book surfing the net for something else, and when I saw the title, I ordered it right away hoping it would be good. I haven't finished it yet, because my husband and I are reading it aloud to each other whenever we get the chance. But we are well into it, and it is excellent. I can't believe it isn't more popular.
The first part of the book is about how we (as a culture) learn to communicate and use language based on a war model. She gives examples of every war tactic and how that plays out in real-life day-to-day situations. I guarantee, they will all be familiar to you. She doesn't miss much in analyzing how people unintentionally communicate poorly with one another. I went to a party after reading that section and was hyper-aware of how I and others communicated. It was very interesting and helpful. But I couldn't wait to get to the next section on how to communicate well!
The rest of the book is about how to replace the old unhealthy way of communicating with a healthy way of communicating that gives you power and confidence in your day-to-day interactions, and minimizes conflict. Her theory that we need to "take the war out of our words" before we can achieve peace at home and in the world, to me, seems like an obvious but brilliant perception. She seems very dedicated to spreading this message and educating people. I think she does an excellent job. This is the kind of stuff I wish we were learning in our schools! Great read.

Exciting and informative!.......2007-02-20
The writers draw you into the book with the descriptive accounts of the people within the book, making you want another chapter to see if this person they have so aptly descibed finally meets up with the Savior and is healed or helped. Very informative because it expands on what we already have read in the Bible with what could have happened and never recorded in the scriptures. Exciting because so many were helped and healed and finally found the Messiah in their lives.

The AD Chronicles keep coming, and they are fabulous. Ancient Rome has never seemed more real, than when you are reading these books. Keep em coming and if you haven't read them, give them a try, or any Thoene books for that matter!
A Look at Christ through a different Glass.......2006-07-14
This book was very exciting for me. Alexander and his son Hero, illustrate that, regardless of how lost we are, or how far we might have rejected Christ, He will always accept us back into his fold, with UNCONDITIONAL LOVE.
Again, this series is remarkable.

The Bodie Thoene books just keep getting better. By entertwining Biblical history with fictional elements, readers keep learning more and more about Judeo Christian heritage. Her ability to tell a story and teach at the same time is unsurpassed.

I am a avid reader of Anne McCaffrey, as such when one of her books comes along I read it. As always I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I can recommend it to any sci-fi reader, and if they havent read any of her books before, maybe this one will tempt them to read her others. I am happy to add it to my collection, and look forward to the next book.
space opera at its most entertaining.......2007-08-11
The plague has decimated many planets and the federation has collapsed due to loss of personal. Khorii, the daughter of the revered Acorna, has stopped the plague but it now has mutated into organisms that eat up inorganic matter. Planets and populations lie in ruins and Acorna is helpless to assist her daughter because she has symptoms of the plague and is in quarantine with her husband.
It is up to Khorii and her twin Arriin to find the cause of the plague and figure out a way to stop it. The sisters travel back in time to the homeworld of the Ancestral Friends, a self-absorbed, long lived shape changing and space faring race that used the unicorns from earth to create the Linyaari race. There they find mutable homes that change shape and resemble of the symptoms of the plague. The key to saving the galaxy turns out to be figuring out why the material from another planet turned deadly and analyze it to find a means to eradicate it.
This is the third and final book in the "Acorna's Children" saga and its space opera at its most entertaining. Typical of an Anne McCaffrey plot is the arrival of surprising twists that readers will enjoy and know there is never a dull scene in this enthralling tale. All the loose ends are tied up and all the questions are answered. Although part of a trilogy, THIRD WATCH is a stand alone thriller.

The book starts showing briefly how the different type of movements work and ends with a photo album of different wristwatches divided in sections (automatic, manual winding, sports, chrono, repeaters, electronic, etc) showing brand names as Omega, Jaegger Le Coultre, Zenith, Rolex, Movado, Girard Perregaux and other big names. Photographs are in B/W mainly, but the few that show the timepieces that open some of the chapters are colour. The comment on each timepiece includes an estimated price, although this information varies through time it can be useful as a reference for the beginner. There is a chapter dedicated to the SWATCH phenomenon, including descriptions and photographs of some timepieces. The book includes very useful tips on how to start collecting, store and keep timepieces; being an excelent introduction at a good price, recomended for who likes wristwatches and might become a collector
