Here's a hard fact of golf life: despite the technological improvements in golf equipment and the billions of dollars spent on that gear, the average golfer is still as bad as he or she was 15 years ago. Bob Rotella, sports psychologist and author of Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect and Golf Is a Game of Confidence, knows what the problem is: commitment. Once a player commits himself to doing better, and does what it takes to achieve that goal, he or she will improve. Rotella's plan for making and following through on that commitment is an excellent one. He says very clearly, and right at the beginning of the book, that his plan isn't for someone who plays golf once a month for pleasure. This is for hard-core dimpleheads, male or female, and it's a serious, extremely workable program.

    Book Description

Fifteen years ago, the average American male golfer's handicap was 16.2. The average female golfer's handicap was 29. Today, the average American male golfer's handicap is 16.2 and the average female golfer's is 29. American golfers have not gotten any better.

World-renowned performance consultant and sports psychologist Dr. Bob Rotella, author of the best-selling books Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect and Golf Is a Game of Confidence, has written The Golf of Your Dreams for the golfer who is determined to get better but hasn't figured out how to go about it. Building on his success with golfers, Dr. Rotella now teaches and details a plan for lowering your handicap, ensuring your improvement if you follow his plan. His program for success in playing the golf of your dreams is based on strategies found to be successful with tour players such as Tom Kite, Brad Faxon, Pat Bradley, and Davis Love III, and is similar to approaches used by Rotella's other clients who are top athletes in a variety of different sports.

Whereas Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect and Golf Is a Game of Confidence covered the mental aspects of the game, The Golf of Your Dreams offers a programmatic guide for getting down to scratch or single digits. It is an approach that Dr. Rotella and his clients have tested for over twenty years, one that has been proven to work consistently with all levels of golfers.

Dr. Rotella knows that if you want to play your best golf ever, you must admit to yourself that you want to be good and that you have the necessary talent to play well. But that's not all. You must commit yourself to a process that will improve your game. In The Golf of Your Dreams Dr. Rotella provides tips on how to:

    * Choose the fight teaching professional
    * Communicate your dreams and goals to your teacher
    * Get your teacher to teach you as a student serious about improving
    * Make a plan for improvement with your teacher and stay committed
    * Sustain and honor your commitment
    * Break old habits and develop new ones
    * Practice efficiently and effectively so you can take your learning from the practice area to the golf course

Dr. Rotella also discusses a piece of very good news for any golfer: Great physical ability is not required in order to play exceptional golf. Rotella demonstrates how characteristics such as desire, patience, and persistence, more than physical talent, enable golfers to improve their performance dramatically. When these characteristics are combined with a proven plan for success, modest talent is more than enough.

Dr. Rotella will reveal why, despite the billions of dollars they have spent on new golf clubs, balls, and lessons, average American golfers' skills are stagnant and their performance is lackluster year after year. Dr. Rotella knows, above all, that simply reading a book or watching a video will not make anyone a better golfer. But reading The Golf of Your Dreams will make you keenly aware of what you have to do in order to play the kind of golf you've always sensed you were capable of playing.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Little Book.......2005-11-27

Dr. Bob Rotella has written a great little book on the mental game of golf. The short chapters are easily digestable a full of wisdom and common sense. I will probably reread this book several times as I try to improve my game. A MUST FOR EVERY GOLFER.

3 out of 5 stars Hits and Misses.......2003-02-09

    Hits:
This book is a good read for beginners. Wonderful advice on finding the right instructor and the importance of lessons. There are good examples to support his reasoning.

    Misses:
Some of the chapters appeared redundent, as some of the points from one chapter seemed to be carried into another. Some of the chapters were rather boring because of this, and the book lacked the flow that I was looking for from subject to subject. While it does offer some good advice for beginning/novice golfers, I found it to be of no significant help to more accomplished players. Maybe after reading arguably the greatest golfing book he's ever written, "Golf is a Game of Perfect", I was expecting more.

5 out of 5 stars The Doc Knows What It Takes to get Better.......2001-05-18

Naive in my opinion some of reviews. Everyone knows at some point to play better it takes a swing coach. But not everyone knows how to interview and pick out the best for you. This book shows us how.

Also, not everyone knows the mental games we have to win about practice, practice, practice in order to raise our games. If it was so simple and easy, as the Doc critiques, why don't most golfers improve then?

I've made great strides in past nine years, and still pushing handicap down. This stuff is what it takes. Doc is the best!

3 out of 5 stars Too early to tell.......2000-11-06

Little contained in this book not already known by serious golfer or athlete. Chapters about choosing a pro and sticking with the pro over years took many pages to describe something that is mostly common sense. On the other hand, advice about commitment to an improvement program, the improvement cycle, value of a systematic approach and the time needed to make significant improvement rang true. I'll see over the years what sticks.

    3 out of 5 stars Very motivational.......2000-08-01

I have read all three of Dr. Rotella's books: 'Golf is Not a Game of perfect', 'Golf is a Game of Confidence', and this piece 'The Golf of Your Dreams'. If you have read 'Golf is Not a Game of Perfect' you will not get much more insight into the mental aspect of the game in this book. Although some material is repeated here it definately is not a complete rehash of his other books. However, the book can be summed up to: find a golf pro, and commit to a practice schedule. That's pretty much it.

Now the reason this book gets three stars is because there is something about Dr. Rotella that is very motivational. The things he discusses make you believe that you can get better, that you are capable of playing 'the golf of your dreams'. And I don't doubt that you are. But if you are a very self motivated person, just find a reliable pro, promise to practice consistently, and you'll be on your way. But, if you are like me, and always need a little push in the right direction from someone who knows how to say things in the right way, then pick this book up. It might not be his best work, but it's worth the money if you're willing to put in the time.

    Product Description

"Want to improve quickly? Read this book. It's good 'fore' you." - Todd Hamilton, 2004 British Open Champion. "Make Your Golf Dream A Reality illustrates basic golf fundamentals in an easy-to-understand format that's simple to try out on your own. I believe the book provides the fundamentals that can help all levels of golfers. Remember, even tour pros work on these fundamentals when they practice." - Fred Funk, 7-time PGA Tour winner. Most mid and high-handicap golfers mistakenly believe that a perfect swing is the only key to golf success. "Make Your Golf Dream A Reality" cuts through this illusion and shows golfers how to achieve lower scores with the swing they already possess. The book identifies typical high-handicapper mistakes and provides a step-by-step system for overcoming these score-killing faults. This system of "smart" golf immediately leads to better scoring without the struggle and confusion of a major swing transformation. Readers learn to pinpoint and correct individual playing weaknesses instead of mindlessly hitting balls on the range and calling it practice. The book walks the reader through accurate game analysis and offers explicit shot-saving remedies that can produce lower scores NOW - not next month, or next year. It is particularly valuable to golfers with limited time for practice. A few hours of serious dedication to the principles in this book can reduce frustration and put the golfer on a steady road to better scoring and a lower handicap. A couple of seasons can produce a 70's shooter and single-digit handicapper. You'll find in these pages a wealth of practical ideas you can use to immediately start improving your golf scores. Unlike books that concentrate on how to swing a golf club, this book is about examining your game and getting the most out of the assets you already possess.

5 out of 5 stars A long awaited book to improve any game.......2007-02-18

I've just finished reading this book, and I found it to be interesting and
also very different from any golf book I've ever read. After reading the
introduction, I suddenly began to feel like I'd be shooting 79 someday
before long. The book has only one chapter on long game shots, but
what a chapter! The dozen or so suggestions for solid ball striking all
make perfect sense, and I haven't been doing any of them.

The rest of the book is about ways to shoot lower scores without having to
spend all your time on the range working on the swing. It points out the
common and stupid course management mistakes of high handicappers and
recommends a calmer, more conservative playing style, aimed at cutting back
on the blowup holes. The chapter about how to control distance inside 100
yards probably is what I need more than anything else. At the back of the
book there's a handicap test you can take to find and correct your own
weaknesses, along with a list of things to think about and do before you get
to the first tee box. The whole book is well put together, and it made me
feel positive about the possibilities of getting good at golf.

The book claims that to become a single-digit handicapper you have to spend
only five hours a month on your game, but you have to spend those hours
wisely. As I read, I felt like the author was in my living room, talking to
me like an old friend, and I really believe the methods are going to work. I
enjoyed reading it, and as a higher handicapper, I give it five stars just
for making me look at my golf game in such a new and hopeful way. The price
is right and even if you don't do what it says, it's a very entertaining
    read.

Ursula K. Le Guin's extraordinary writing primer is full of charm, wit, and opinion. Le Guin likens writing to "steering a craft," and as one reads through this volume, one has the sense of floating down a river, with the waves of Le Guin's words lapping at one's craft. Le Guin veers sharply from the mainstream of contemporary writing manuals by challenging their very definition of story. While it is common to "conflate story with conflict," Le Guin writes, she finds that limiting. "Story is change," she says. While that change may be the result of conflict, it is just as likely to evolve from "relating, finding, losing, bearing, discovering, [or] parting." Le Guin demonstrates this complexity with well-hewn excerpts from the works of such writers as Jane Austen, Mark Twain, J.R.R. Tolkien, Charlotte Brontë, and especially Virginia Woolf. The many aspects of fine fiction writing Le Guin addresses here include the role of the narrative sentence (its "chief duty [is] to lead to the next sentence--to keep the story going"); avoiding exposition doldrums ("break up the information, grind it fine, and make it into bricks to build the story with"); and the concept of "crowding and leaping." While prose should be "crowded with sensations, meanings, and implications," don't forget that "what you leave out is infinitely more than what you leave in."

Accompanying Le Guin's text is a handful of clever writing exercises, each as enticing as its name. Among them are "I am García Márquez," which requires writing with no punctuation; "Chastity," which challenges one to write without adjectives or adverbs; and "A Terrible Thing to Do," which proposes taking an earlier exercise and cutting it--by half. --Jane Steinberg

5 out of 5 stars Solid Advice and Set of Exercises.......2007-10-15

Who wouldn't want to learn exercises from one of the most prolific Science-Fiction/Fantasy writers? This is a solid book of instruction on the craft of writing. That is a point the Le Guin makes very early on: Craft enables art. If nothing else that is what you should take away from this book.

As primarily a poet, I wasn't sure if this book would be the best for me as it is mostly geared towards fiction, but I certainly came away with a lot. The exercises focus on the sentence and narrative which is very useful in other genres of writing outside of fiction.

This is just a solid book of instruction and full of exercises that you can use time and time again. I highly suggest this to anyone who is a writer and to anyone who is teaching creative writing.

5 out of 5 stars Good practical advice.......2007-02-15

This book has very good writing exercises to get you started. I preferred to do the exercises first and then to read the entire chapter explaining the purpose of the exercise. I really enjoyed the examples from other novels that Le Guin selected.

I love that Le Guin wrote the book for both critique groups and writers on their own. I disagreed with some of her advice for critique groups. Usually, the only thing that happens in these groups is that the "creative" beginning writer who takes risks is chased out or domineered by the people who know the "rules" of writing.

There are no set "rules" of writing, only different opinions. Tolstoy begins his famous novel in the middle of a conversation. Thomas Hardy uses passive voice extensively even in the first paragraph of his famous novel. Yet, by some people's standards today, their works would have been immediately rejected as written by an amateurish hack.

Most published writers I know abhor critique groups. There are simply too many genres and categories of fiction writing. How you write will depend heavily on the type of market you plan on submitting your work, and no one knows all of them. Join a critique group for the experience, and keep your sense of humor. Don't get discouraged if it's not the rosy image you have of artists supporting one another through creativity. If you do get discouraged, read Paul Theroux's "Sir Vidia's Shadow" for the ultimate tale of being mistreated by a fellow writer.

I love Appendix II: Forms of the Verbs. It's short but full of information. It's almost worth the price of the book alone. Most how-to-write books make use of the past and present tenses as if those are the only two stylistic choices left on earth. It was very refreshing to see Le Guin's notes on this subject.

5 out of 5 stars learn and have fun.......2005-12-31

This is the best book on writing narrative I've ever read. It has Le Guin's wit and imagination in the writing, and it is full of useful tips and exercizes. A book to keep around and pick up over and over.

5 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Text on Creative Writing.......2003-03-14

"Steering the Craft" is a surprisingly good and practical book on creative writing. I was surprised because books and essays on writing by established authors can be downright patronizing and intentionally vague. Le Guin, on the other hand, uses lucid language and a gentle tone to explain the essential elements of good prose writing. The examples she uses are eye-opening, perhaps because I keep seeing the same examples from the same group of contemporary authors in most recent books on writing. Her exercises are also innovative, especially those intended to help fiction writers recognize the subtle "music" in prose, and how that is different from poetry. Scattered throughout the book are several opinion pieces where Le Guin discusses various trends in contemporary prose writing. This is where you decide whether her book is right for you--Le Guin definitely has some strong views: she believes that immediacy of the present tense narrative is an illusion and is equally skeptical about hybrid genre prose. If you are in agreement with her or can live with those views, then I have no qualms about recommending this little gem.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book on craft.......2003-02-01

I've been a big fan of Ms. LeGuin's for a very long time. This book on the craft of story telling has been extremely helpful. I'm a lawyer and I write stories on behalf of endangered species every day: now I hope to write them better! I strongly advise a re-read of Strunk and White (I've found used copies for about 85 cents in San Francisco) in conjunction with her book.
If you're a LeGuin fan, just read it for pure enjoyment. I think every book reveals something of an author, and everything she reveals is delightful, intricate, and honest.
If you're interested in developing your writing skills, this is a great lesson and excersice book. But don't expect her to be easy on on you: she'll hold you to a hight standard! She will also get you thinking about language as an art, which is a good thing.
Let out your sheets and run downwind with this gem.

5 out of 5 stars There Aren't Enough Stars in the New England Sky for this Book.......2007-03-21

This series is the best series I have ever read in my life! Each book keeps getting better and more cozier, even though you don't think a book can get any better than that.

The book starts off when best friends, 6th graders Nicky and Charlie, are shooting spitballs and are expelled by their teacher, who is the mean wife of the mean police chief. Because they are expelled, they miss the field trip into the woods. But in the woods, a body is found...

Nicky's mother, Peggy Jean, is the mayor of the small New England town. She and her next door neighbor, Charlie's mother Lavinia, are best friends. I absolutely adore the two families and their relationship. I love Nicky and Charly. I love the cozy atmosphere and the coffee and cookies.

Max is an important and interesting character. He is the one who came to the depressed town and revived it into a colonial village and made it thrive. He has some very interesting people working for him.

Papa Luigi and his family are also very important characters that have interesting roles.

Not only is the atmosphere cozy, but the story line/plot/clues are very clever. All the clues fit together and make a very good, entertaining story.

I just cannot sing enough praise for this awesome book and the entire series. This wonderful author has remarkable talent.

5 out of 5 stars Pumpkin pie flavored New England sleuth cozy.......2006-09-03

Death of a trickster takes place in a New England village called Cobb's Landing where the mayor is a witty woman named Peggy. It's a small town, dressed up to resemble a colonial village, at the peak of Indian summer excitedly awaiting Halloween. This is the second book in the series and they are so addictive that I hope Mrs. Borden will keep writing as long as her imagination keeps spinning. I absolutely adored the whole feel of autumn, the chilly morning, falling red leaves, wool sweaters, Peggy and Lavinia her best friend drinking caramel apple cider, her cat Pie, the pumpkins being carves, the cakes and cookies they baked and the crisp sultry breeze sweeping summer away and setting the village up for mid fall. This book made me feel very cozy and trickled dreams of pumpkins and baked goodies, warm cocoa and reading wrapped in a warm blanket. I was sad when it was actually over and the mystery revealed as it's a short book spanning two hundred pages and can be read in a day or two but I savored it and can't wait to read the third one that is all ready out, it deals with the next holiday, Thanksgiving.

The mystery begins when Nicky, Peggy's son along with Lavinia's son Charlie get in trouble at school for throwing spit balls at each other. They miss the filed trip to the Alsop woods but learn that a body has been found. As it turns out it was the school skeleton used in science classes dressed up as count Dracula. On a few more occasions pranks are following Peggy and she needs to sort out what is happening and who would do such a thing. Cobb's Landing is populated by some warm and some whacky characters. There's Papa Luigi, the owner of the woods and his son Lew, his wife Gina and their daughter Maria. The new police chief, grumpy Henry, his cold wife Carol, their bully son Roger, fellow villagers and shop and diner owners, Max an interesting character who materializes out of nowhere and no one knows what he is up to, Ian and Missy, who seem to get on Peggy's nerves as she gets close to Ian whom Peggy likes and Rob, her childhood crush who is the new police office. When a body is found at the end of the pumpkin float, no one can understand why this person is dead and why would kill them. It's up to Peggy to use her knowledge of a place she grew up in, her Mayor powers and her excellent snooping abilities.

I have really enjoyed this delicious mystery but I wish the part where the killer was revealed was longer. The ending had lots of more plots twisted together but they were all explained and man o man, was I surprised! The author does a great job describing the nature, the air, the sun, the whole small town scenery and makes me miss the characters. Lately I have found myself enjoying all the new mystery books coming out from various writers as there are books about food, coffee, tea, spas and even a cute village such as Cobb's Landing. I can't wait to follow up Borden's character in her next cozy mystery.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, Light Small Town Cozy Series.......2006-07-15

In the 2nd book in the Peggy Jean Turner Mystery series, things are definitely looking up for both Peggy Jean (P.J.) and her hometown of Cobb's Landing, New England. The town has been turned into a colonial village, and is quickly becoming a tourist attraction. The townspeople dress in period costumes, and no modern equipment is on display in town during "town hours" (including cell phones and satellite dishes). P.J. grumbles a bit over the costume she must wear while working in her hardware store, but even she cannot complain about the renewed life and money pouring into her beloved town.

It is almost Halloween, and soon pranks start occurring that raise a few eyebrows. The high school's skeleton shows up around town dressed in costume, and P.J's son is suspended for throwing spitballs. It all seems harmless until an elderly member of the town, Papa Luigi, goes missing, and is found tied up and ill in a hidden cave. More disturbing, however, is the body of the man found dead next to him in the cave. Papa Luigi cannot remember what happened, but he pleads innocence to the murder of the chief of police's son. P.J. jumps in to prove that Papa Luigi, a longtime friend of her family, is innocent, and to make sure that the Halloween festivities are enjoyed by all of the tourists that have come to save her town.

This is a fun, light cozy series and I really enjoy the characters, the mysteries, and the setting. The only thing that I didn't care for was the nicknames (P.J. for a mayor's name seemed too casual), and the name "Lovey" for her best friend was a bit silly for me. Otherwise, I loved the storyline, and was intrigued by the character of Max. If you like small town cozies, give this series a try.

The first book in the series is called "Death of a Tart". Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Love this cute series.......2006-02-02

this cute series is fun and believable. Small town charm, weird and facinating characters just make it that much more of a good read. A series you can enjoy and feel good when you have finished.

4 out of 5 stars A neat New England cozy .......2004-11-01

Halloween is right around the corner and people are getting ready to celebrate. The town has taken an economic upswing ever since they converted the place into a colonial village where residents dress in period costumes. Tourists stay at the restored button factory converted into an inn. Mayor Peggy Turner, who also owns a hardware store, is at loggerheads with the new Chief of Police Henry Cartwright, who she believes is impugning on her territory.

Henry thinks that whoever is stealing the skeleton Buddy from the lab and leaving him dressed up in clothes so he looks like a corpse should fall under his jurisdiction, but Peggy takes care of it because she knows it is silly schoolboy pranks. When ailing elderly Luigi Alsop vanishes, Peggy organizes the search. They find him in a cave next to Henry's dead son the murder weapon near Luigi. Many folks believe Luigi killed the lad because the deceased was harassing and terrifying the older man's granddaughter. Peggy thinks otherwise and sets out to prove her assertion.

This New England cozy contains a very interesting mystery because of the attitudes of the locals who pull together in good and bad times. Neighbors know they can count on one another for help (a friend in need is not a pest as it seems in most places today). Peggy as the activist mayor symbolizes all that is good in this small town. Readers will also gain a feel for life in a New England village, but it is the unusual situations that Peggy and her best friend seem to and in find themselves in that make for a fun regional tale.
