5 out of 5 stars For the love of animals.......2006-01-12

It is obvious that Roger Caras loves animals. Not just dogs, but all animals. So do I. This book provides tremendous insight into the history of dog owning, on how they became pets, how they react, act, in other words, how and why they do what they do.

I loved the descriptions of interaction between animals. So much of that I had the pleasure of observing myself. But put in words makes the book and my personal experiences that much sweeter.

This book is a perfect gift for anyone who owns a dog or plans to own a dog.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed!.......2000-05-04

First of all, the title is deceiving. "...The Way Some of Our Closest Friends View Us" was what attracted me to the book. Unfortunately, I found very little information about the way my dogs might view me. Caras covers more than just the "sight" sense. This book was a bit too academic and historical for my tastes. I wished there were more anecdotes and/or behavioral information. The pictures and photos were randomly scattered around and many of them didn't have captions.

While the history of dogs/wolves is interesting, it's not what I paid for.

5 out of 5 stars One of the sweetest books on dogs ever........1998-01-04

I confess. I'm a dogaholic. I may only have one in my home,, but in my heart there are thousands. As many as need homes. Clearly Roger Caras is just that way, too. His "gosh, golly, gee whiz" sense of wonder and humor (sometimes mixed together), fit perfect with the way he tells his "tails". Some of the stories are nothing short of amazing as witness in particular the story of Sheba who alerts her owner to her on-coming seizures. How? It doesn't matter. What matters is that she does. A truly remarkable story in a truly remarkable book.

4 out of 5 stars Love him, love his dogs........1996-11-12

There are dozens of reasons to recommend this book. It is full of insight and anecdotes about those loveable, canine companions. But the best reason to read this book is that on every page it is obvious that Roger Caras loves his dogs. If you own a dog, and why would you read this book if you didn't, then you know how he feels, and in these pages you have found a kindred spirit who can echo your sighs and your gushing 'awes' at the antics of our furry friends. Read this book to learn about dogs, their habits, their senses, their remarkable abilities.. Savor this book for its warmth and emotion, and keep your dog handy, you'll need to hug him at least once a chapter

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT READ!!!.......2006-02-25

I truly enjoyed Tom's first journey of catching poachers, but this second one is even better than his first! His writing style takes you back in time and puts you right there with him, sneaking up on and surprising die hard poachers! For anyone who loves nature and enjoys a great adventure this book has the best of both worlds; Tom devoted over thirty years in protecting wildlife and natural resources so that we all could enjoy our own outdoor adventure(legally of course)...

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book On The Unsung Heroes Of Law Enforcement.......2006-03-29

My life has revolved around the outdoors for as long as I can remember. Prior to being enslaved in the corporate world, I had dreams of being a game warden. When I came across this book, inklings of my dreams from young adulthood came out and I just had to get this book.

Poachers Caught is a very realistic portrayal of life as a game warden. The book is broken up into 35 short stories. The book is not like watching an action packed episode of COPS. Some of the stories seem to be quite "ordinary", such as several stories about catching people who break possession limits for fish. Other stories are quite humorous, such as a story of the author checking people in ice fishing shanties. As expected, some stories are pretty exciting like the story about the author getting run over on his motor bike or the pursuit of some duck poachers in a canoe. I felt the book was very well rounded and gave examples of the various types of cases and challenges a game warden face.

The author does a great job in this book discussing issues that affect natural resources management. For example, the author discusses his theory that there is a link between "buck pools" and nighttime poaching of deer. The author also discusses the fact that many poachers are actually good people. The people simply get caught up in the moment and break the law a little. Each time they break the law and don't get caught, they push it a little further until their actions are gross violations of the law. The author also discusses that due to the limited number of wardens and dedicated resources, game wardens rely a lot on the public to catch criminals.

The book is a quick read. If you are an aspiring game warden or interested in natural resources management, I think this would be a good book to read. However, this is one of those books where if you are not interested in the topic, I would suggest saving your money and reading something else.

4 out of 5 stars Former Minnesota C.O........2006-01-18

As a former Minnesota Conservation Officer I had the pleasure of working with Tom Chapin a couple of times. Tom is a true gentleman, not quite what you would expect in the raw north woods of Minnesota chasing poachers. As I read both of his books I found myself asking what was so unusual about his stories; they all seemed like usual happenings for any Game Warden. Then I realized that they didn't seem unique to me because I too had been through most of the situations that Tom mentions in his books except Tom is far too mellow and humble. What Tom doesn't mention is that far too many of the game and fish arrests back in the 70s and 80s resulted in nothing more than a slap on the wrist for the poacher.
In the late 70s several of us worked an illegal fish netting case in Tom's town and caught a fish poacher who had taken hundreds of walleyes illegally and was selling them to the Country Kitchen restaurant for their Friday fish fry. The poacher laughed at us in court when he got a $500 fine and said he would make that much and more then next night netting walleyes. The fine was no deterrent then.
The small part of both books I disliked is the fact that Tom glossed over the danger of the job-danger from poacher's guns and fish spears, from drowning, from hypothermia, and high-speed chases when the offender is armed with a high powered rifle. Back then several of us were involved in poachers shooting at officers or knew of an officer who had been shot by a poacher, some as young as 15.
These books are well worth the money, but remember when you read them that Tom has approached his subject from a mostly humorous side and that the job of a Conservation Officer, Game Warden, or any wildlife enforcement agent is extremely dangerous with little reward except for the self-satisfaction of protecting our natural resources from disappearing. Good Job Tom. Enjoy your retirement.

5 out of 5 stars Poachers Caught, Nick.......2005-01-21

What can I say but that this was probably the most interesting and intriging book I have ever read! It was so funny it kept me up all night laughing and wanting to read more! The fact that it is all real only added the hystericle excitement. It was witty and fun with a hint of sadness for the abused resources. It really made me respect conservation officers more, and oppreciate their work.

4 out of 5 stars A good story-teller.......2004-09-10

I was pleased to see that Tom Chapin had published a book of his experiences as a game warden in northern Minnesota. My copy came from a small general store in Minnesota, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it signed by the author.

This is an interesting collection of short stories taken from the author's many years of field work. These true tales range from humorous to a bit frightening; they are well suited to fireside or bedtime reading for all ages.

My only criticism is a minor one. The book is not edited very well. Some of the sentences are punctuated or structured poorly. This may not be a problem for most readers, but it bothered me. A professional editor could have made this book appear more...well, professional.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun Quick Read.......2004-02-01

He knows his stuff. This book is a quick read. Great short stories that make you laugh and realise what it takes to be a good Game Warden.

Book Description

Readers who want to teach themselves Italian at their own pace and outside a formal classroom setting will find this book an excellent source for getting started. Meanwhile, its many exercises and quick-check quizzes make it a fine textbook supplement for classroom use. The book opens with a discussion of Italian sounds, pronunciation, and spelling, with advice on stress and intonation in spoken Italian. Chapters that follow coach readers in greeting people, asking and answering basic question, polite expression, counting, making comparisons, expressing preferences, and carrying on everyday verbal transactions, for instance, at stores, banks, and restaurants. The updated text reflects current trends including use of communications devices and the euro. New in this edition are cultural capsules that discuss Italy and the Italian way of life. The authorÂ's pleasant, user-friendly approach to the language helps make learning Italian truly easy.

This has to be the best workbook to easily learn Italian.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Workbook for Review and Additional Practice.......2005-08-23

Despite what any foreign language learning book says, there is no quick way to learn a language. At the same time, this book is a very good review or supplemental workbook and the title should be renamed "Italian: The Fun Way." In addition to short readings, dialogues and comprehension activities, there are some crossword and word-search puzzles. The first chapter, with the Italian sounds and pronunciations, is a feature which textbooks ought to follow because correct speaking is necessary for doing well in comprehension. The organizational charts are also superior to most textbooks, so that students will quickly understand the material. Also, all of the answers to the activities are furnished at the back of the book. Furthermore, the vocabulary checklist is a good way for students to record their progress. Although the material is not particularly unique as this information can be obtained through any first year textbook, the organization makes recalling knowledge much easier, and perhaps, helpful to students who need additional practice. Finally, the reasoning behind the lower ranking score is because the book does not have audio, and it seems necessary in order to study a language that there are audio lessons included with any type of language workbook. The title should also not give a false impression of the amount of hard work behind learning a language.

4 out of 5 stars A great book to continue Italian studies.......2003-10-09

This book is great for anyone who already has some working knowledge of Italian and wants to expand their skills. However, I would never recommend this book as a starting place to learn Italian from the ground up. It moves quickly and assumes some knowledge beforehand.

5 out of 5 stars Brush up your Italian.......2003-08-13

I achieved a reasonable degree of proficiency in Italian several years ago, but through lack of use, have forgotten a lot. I bought this book with the intention of doing some self-guided study to "brush up". It is absolutely perfect for that use.

Each short lesson is followed by numerous written exercises. All the answers are in the back (no peeking!)

The book would be a useful supplement for anyone learning Italian through other means - in a class, via audio or computer-based courses. It would give the curious a basic understanding of grammar, but would not be a useful single tool for achieving spoken fluency or comprehension as it does not involve listening or speaking.

But for those in my situation, it is perfect, and much cheaper than buying a full grammar text and/or audio course, much of which you might not need.

5 out of 5 stars Great review book.......2002-01-21

I studied Italian many years ago and wanted to refresh my understanding. This book has been a great help. The subject matter is well organized into tables and there are plenty of exercises to help you check your understanding. There are also lots of tips and other explanations to clarify the presented material. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Basic Italian Cookbook.......2006-02-21

Nothing too fancy, just reliably delicious Italian-American dishes. My mother (2nd generation I-A) loves this book and bought copies for all her daughters.

Don't let the title fool you - these are some terrific, easy recipes.

5 out of 5 stars An Underrated Classic.......2003-09-05

This was the first cookbook I ever bought, back when I moved into my own apartment about 12 years ago. Many times I relied on the straightforward recipes and advice to easily create wonderful meals. These are the kinds of recipes you can knock off at a moment's notice, invite a few people over for dinner, and listen to them rave about your cooking for YEARS after that.

To keep in mind, they are mostly Italian-American recipes, so they're more hearty immigrant fare than complex northern italian-style (though there is a whole chapter on risotto - which breaks down the process so simply that literally anyone can make homemade risotto). Also no pictures, but every word of the text is helpful.

Very highly recommended!

I originally got this book because I was looking for [an inexpensive] Italian cookbook. I had low expectations, just wanted a couple of quick recipes. Instead, I got one of the best cookbooks I have ever owned. My wife and I love this book and use it all the time. The recipes are usually very easy, and always delicious. We are constantly amazed at how good the food turns out.

We cook alot of Italian dishes and this book has not failed us yet. Veal Chops Stuffed with Spinich has become our favorite "company dish". When we aren't sure what we want for dinner or if we feel like trying something new, this is the first book we consult.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for young people.......2006-04-04

This book is classified as a juvenile cookbook. As such, it does a great job of introducing young people to cooking skills in general and Italian cooking in particular. The book also is part travelogue and part history lesson. There's a lot of information.
The best feature of the book are the recipes. They are slightly different from the usual Italian cookbook offerings and they are very good. The spaghetti al sugo, which can be baked in the oven, is a real winner. It's tasty and so convenient for a busy day. I've also made the minestrone and the biscuit tortoni and they were both "keepers".

5 out of 5 stars ESPN 2005 Sports Almanac Review.......2006-02-01

Sports is a huge part of my life, and I cannot tell you how many times I have referred to this book to settle questions and argurments. It gives the information in a no-nonsense manner that I like. I have watched many sporting events with this by my side.

Thanks, ESPN.......how did we survive before there was an ESPN?

5 out of 5 stars ESPN Sports Almanac.......2005-09-15

One of my professors uses this as a required textbook for his class, "History & Issues of Sports." He has been using it for several years, and the students are getting a textbook bargain for $10.00.

5 out of 5 stars The Argument Ender.......2005-03-31

This superb publication (which I own several editions of), can end just about any argument when it comes to sports. It covers the major sports (football basketball baseball hockey), but what I really like about it is that it also covers an array of other popular sports, such as golf, gymnastics (two of my favorites)tennis, and horse racing. It goes into season records on baseball football basketball and hockey, and contains all-time records. I use it to help me decide which sportscards to invest in. The book contains bios on some sports celebrities, and also has coverage of major sports news events of the previous year. I highly recommend this book for the plain and simple fact that it is one of the most accurate sports reference books published. Plus, as most any of you know, it is put out by the fine folks at ESPN, the same people who have their own tv sports stations. Want to know who has made the most goals in hockey? It's right here. Want to find out who has struck out the most batters in baseball? It's right here. Would you like to find out who has won the most gold medals in either men's or women's gymnastics? Find it here. For me, this book is entertaining and informative. It would make an excellent Birthday/Christmas/Whatever gift for sports fans, and it's a plus for anyone doing research on sports.

4 out of 5 stars Setting the standard for sports quick reference.......2005-01-17

While there's little in the way of original research, that's not the purpose of this book. It aims only to be a recap of the year in sports, as well as a historical reference, both of which it does well.

The Olympic coverage is excellent, as is the recap of the 2004 baseball season. One thing ESPN does exceptionally well is baseball, and that shows in this book.

The only negative to this item is that it plays too much on the ESPN brand - things like Sportscenter Top 10 lists are cute, but I'd rather just have the facts. Still, I'd recommend this as something for sports fans to keep on their bookshelves. Sure, you can find most of the info online if you know where to look, but it's nice to have convenient access all in one place.
