Book Description
This book fulfils the long-felt need for a modern manual of techniques of vegetation description and analysis. The approach is deliberately non-mathematical with an emphasis on the practical and ecological aspects of the subject. Methods are clearly and simply explained and are demonstrated using a wide range of case studies together with many illustrations, diagrams and tables to aid comprehension. A particular feature of the book is a detailed introduction to computer methods for the analysis of vegetation data and the availability of a disk of programs for personal computers from the authors to complement the text. This book will be essential for field and practical work in quantitative plant ecology and will be invaluable to advanced students, researchers and lecturers in ecology, biogeography, environmental science, botany, agriculture, forestry and biological conservation. "Unlike some notorious predecessors, this user-friendly volume is clearly written, is firmly planted in the real world of problem-solving and hypothesis generation, and through well-chosen examples and illustrations establishes a strong link to contemporary projects in landscape management, impact assessment and wildlife conservation." Professor Philip Grime in The Times Higher Education Supplement "The book is highly readable, which is perhaps surprising considering the complexity of some of the content, and its layout has been well thought out; good use being made of changes in font style for emphasis, diagrams and photographs. The text is partly organized along chronological lines, in which the earliest approaches and techniques are described first. The book aims to explain the various techniques of collecting and analyzing vegetation data in a language that second and third year undergraduates studying plant ecology, and with only a basic understanding of statistical concepts will be able to understand. That it succeeds where so many others with similar objectives have failed is a testament not only to the style in which the text is written, but also to the authors' understanding of the subject matter and their appreciation of the requirements of the students at which the book is targeted." David Taylor, The Geographical Journal Contents

Customer Reviews:
Kent & Coker's book.......2000-09-13
This book covers everything that a budding phyosociologist could want to know about setting up surveys, collecting data and analysing the results. Despite its modest title it is strong on multivariate analyses - anyone thinking of applying ordination or akin techniques to plant data should read this book! It also comes with a disc including some free software, which appeared to work perfectly well. I am not sure that this was a great selling point for me since I have all these features + more in other, commercial stats packages. The package would certainly be adequate to get a student started though - good value!

Book Description
Called the ghost of the flats, the silvery bonefish is the holy grail of flats fishing. Its speed in the water and chameleon-like color make it the ultimate challenge to catch, and because of its elusiveness, much of the joy of bonefishing is in searching for the fish. Finding bonefish from a skiff and while wading are thoroughly covered, as is catch-and-release. Details on the bonefish's environment and its food provide the essential background, and you'll learn what tackle and flies to take and how to cast efficiently in the flats.

Please with the Detail on Biology.......2007-07-05
I bought the book while planning an extended trip to Belize. While the book is somewhat Florida Centered, I found it extremely useful. The chapters on biology and fish behavior gave one an insight that how complex the "hunt" for the bonefish can be. In reading the book, I found many useful insights while still keeping me grounded in the fact that pursuit of flats fish is hard work. There is only so much that can be said about reels, lines and rods, but the references to how a slightly larger or smaller kit might work are useful. Overall I think that there is something for everyone in the book, and for those that already know it all, a nice book for the lodge....
Not just for bonefishers.......2004-12-20
This book is one of the best nonfiction fishing books I've ever read. I'd recommend it to any flyfisher, even those who've never seen a bonefish. Chico Fernandez has an incredible amount of experience and knowledge about bonefish and flyfishing generally, and his writing is clear, interesting, and sometimes hilarious. He is careful to explain why he thinks a certain way about an issue, includes many examples, and isn't afraid to express uncertainty. All these are refreshing qualities in a genre dominated by those who typically issue piles of dogma, seemingly believing themselves to have risen above other ordinary fishing nuts, to the status of gods or celebrities. Chico reminds us it's just fishing, but damn, it's an unbelievably interesting and fun way to spend time.
The beginning section on bonefish biology, by Dr. Aaron Adams, strengthens the book immensely, giving it the depth of scientific authority. Don't skip this section - it provides much interesting information that will come back to you as you read the rest of the book. It's presented with the same clarity and authority Dr. Adams exhibited in his own book, A Fisherman's Coast.
Word of warning - if you don't want to feel that you must be on the flats now, barefoot, looking for tailing bonefish, don't read this book.

Fly Fishing in Saltwater
ASIN: 1558212035 |
Book Description
No brand of fly fishing challenges anglers more than stalking bonefish on tropical saltwater flats. Fly Fishing for Bonefish offers a definitive profile of this elusive fish and thoroughly dissects the skills needed to catch it. Brown shows how to find and see bonefish - how to spot feeding and mudding signs, the camouflage techniques the fish adopts, the effects of tide, temperature, and weather on where the fish will be and how it can be spotted. Then he gives helpful advice on how to fish cruising or tailing fish, which stripping techniques work best, how to set drag, and the most effective ways to strike and fight bonefish. An especially interesting section treats fly selection and design - with color plates of more than seventy patterns tied by some of today's most innovative fly developers, including Carl Richards, Craig Mathews, Jack Gartside, Jeffrey Cardenas, Lefty Kreh, Ben Estes, Tim Borski, Jim Orthwein, and many others. Brown also catalogs major bonefish destinations around the world. With its hundreds of color and black-and-white photographs (the color sections on how to spot fish are exceptionally valuable), dozens of line drawings by Bob White, and a crisp, authoritative, and extensive text, Fly Fishing for Bonefish is the definitive book on what may well be fly fishing's ultimate challenge. (7 1/4 X 9 1/2, 372 pages, color photos, b&w photos, maps, illustrations, diagrams, charts)
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2003-11-04
I am a fairly experienced fly tier. This book is admittedly not for beginners, it assumes proficiency. It is well thought out, well set out, has great analysis of flies and their qualities, terrific sections on types of material and their characteristics, just the info that fly tier wants (invaluable for those new to saltwater fly tying). This is an outstanding book
Awesome, comprehensive book.......2003-09-12
I am a long time fisherman, but new at fly fishing for bonefish. This book has been wonderful for me to better understand what I am doing. This book tells you pretty much everything you need to know and much more. I enjoyed Brown's writing as well as the section in the back where world-renowned experts give their advice also. A must read for any bonefisherman.
This is the Bible of bonefishing........2000-11-29
This is the most complete guide to bonefishing written to date. For those of us who are addicted to fly fishing for bonefish, this book goes on every trip to the flats. There are a few more recently-written bonefishing books, with updated tackle and location descriptions, but Dick Brown's book is the most complete for learning what to expect on the flats--wading or in a boat. Great photos and drawings of different scenarios when fish are spotted, and tips on spotting fish in different wind, cloud, and temperature conditions. The book has brief descriptions of bonefishing destinations, the best times to go, and what to expect once you're there. There is also an interesting discussion of the bonefish's diet based on a recent scientific study of what bonefish eat. I've flipped through this book so many times, the pages are falling out. If you've ever been fly fishing for bonefish or you are considering going, get this book first.
This book is a must for Bonefishing !.......1998-02-13
This is an essential book for any person interested in Bonefish. It explains habitat, techniques and fishing areas clearly. Mr. Brown has a love of the sport and this clearly shows through in the text and photos. Highly Recommended !

Expensive for what you get.......1998-10-25
This volume contains 75 pages of crucial information about the big three. It also contains inane pictures of a "green-toed [sic] sloth," an amazon parrot, a hybiscus, bouganvillia, and a statue of some people somewhere. There are also several pages of detailed resort descriptions that lend the book a distastefully commercial air.
The information about bonefish, tarpon, and permit is of high quality, but it seems diluted by empty glitz and commercialism. Take that away, cut the price in half, and you have a good value.

Super book, many flies and recipes, how to tie them and how and where to fish them. Put this one on you bench.
All Fly Tying Books Should Be This Good.......1998-05-14
This book doesn't waste your time or money. Ever wonder what flies work where and how to tie those flies? This book tells you if you're going after Bonefish. It's to the point with great pictures, instructions and information that you can really use. Even if you don't fish for Bonefish, get this book. It will get you started.
Useful, concise, loaded with information........1998-03-06
I consider myself a novice fly-tyer, having resumed the hobby after a break of over forty years. I am getting ready to go to the Bahamas for a week and wanted to tie some bonefish flies. I have about four books on saltwater flies, many of which gave me some direction, but none hold a candle to this book which a good friend just gave me for my birthday. Excellent photography, over 150 fly recipes and pictures as well as chapters on basic tying techniques, innovations and trends, a useful glossary of materials and a chapter on locations, prey, depths, light and wind conditions as they relate to flies and presentations. Superb indexing and anecdotes. You can also easily cross-ref fishing locations with specific patterns. I'm looking for other books by this author. Can't wait to get to the weekend to put some of Mr. Brown's ideas to work. dd

"Freelance writing is not easy, but it is doable," say the authors of this primer. There will be times, they add, when there is no work. When there is no money. When no one returns your calls. Hardly sounds alluring. But if you've got the bug, or suspect you do, this is as fine a place as any to get a feel for the freelance life. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles features interviews with freelancers and editors, and chapters on generating ideas, querying, writing, interviewing ("there's no such thing as a stupid question"), and developing a niche. Other sections give the inside skinny on the industry: who the big players are, who the top editors are, what firsthand accounts are worth reading. And there is even advice for dealing with taxes and contracts. Breathe easy: "The new media world still needs the old-fashioned writer." In fact, writing for the Web, the authors say, can be quite lucrative. Just be sure, for writing online as well as in print, to avoid committing any of the authors' "Ten ways to turn off an editor" (including: be a stalker, misspell the editor's name, balk at changes). And remember: "Persistent people make it as writers." --Jane Steinberg

Customer Reviews:
What a great guide.......2007-05-07
This book has shown me how to actually get published in magazines. It will not only give you the 'how to' but it will also encourage you to take the risk and put yourself out there.
If you are serious about making money writing this book is a must.
Easy to read and very helpful.......2006-08-05
The authors of this book wrote a book that is very easy to read and provides alot of very helpful information for those trying to get published in magazines. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is laying the foundation of becoming freelance article writer.
Best Purchase on this subject!.......2005-09-05
I had so many questions and this book has answered them all! I have had it wire bound because I am refering to it so much.Just can't recommend it highly enough!
Good content-- in between the jokes & verbose chatty writing.......2005-02-28
If jokes and verbose trying-to-be-clever writing were advertising, this book would be Oprah Magazine. But more on that later--I just needed a lead as per chapter 19 "Hook 'Em Early, Hook 'Em Hard."
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles" is like an introduction 101 survey class to this topic. Among many other things, it covers the basics of the entire process from generating article ideas, to writing query letters to conducting interviews, writing basics, and even how freelance writers deal with taxes. Like a 101 class, this book provides breadth but not depth. Most beginning magazine writers will likely need more of the material on earlier parts of the process such as studying the market and writing query letters rather than dealing with taxes and contracts. However, as a survey course, they do have their place, with the exception of the chapter on writing books and book proposals. For an excellent, more in depth treatment of query letters, a topic a novice will definitely need, I recommend "How to Write Irresistible Query Letters" by Lisa Collier Cool.
Having published a handful of freelance pieces and knowing the basics of the process, I can tell you the information is provided is good, sound advice. My problem with the book is that you have to wade through so much verbose trying-to-be clever chatty writing to get to the basics you need as a freelance magazine writer. It's like the authors, unbridled from the tight word counts and no nonsense editing of magazines went nuts trying to be cute and clever. For one of many examples, there's a section called "Ratatatatat: Machine Gun Writing" which begins, "Do you feel like Bruce Willis in 'Die Hard' right about now? What the heck do we mean when we say machine gun writing?" Then there's another paragraph before they get to the definition. I think this book could have been edited by about 1/3 with no loss of content.
None-the-less, I appreciated the content in between the jokes, even though some of it was not in depth enough to my liking, such as the brief section on how to get clips. I especially liked the interviews with magazine editors discussing what writers need to do to break into writing for their publications. If you need an intro 101 survey of the career of freelance writing and don't mind wading through all the chatty wisecracking writing, this is the book for you.
No-nonsense, friendly advice.......2005-02-03
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Publishing Magazine Articles," by Sheree Bykofsky, Jennifer Basye Sander, and Lynne Rominger, is a straightforward yet entertaining book about the world of freelance writing. In such a book you might expect to find the typical information on writers' guidelines, stamped self-addressed envelopes, query letters, and making sure you spell editors' names correctly--and you will find that here. However, you'll also find quite a few other, less expected things.
The authors do not assume familiarity with the industry. They walk you through the rewards of being a freelance writer, explain why magazines hire freelancers and what freelancers do for magazines, share some success stories from real freelancers, share information from editors on what they look for in a writer, and provide a "reality check" to help you decide if this is what you really want to do. This book is particularly good about pointing out all of the mistaken attitudes, inadvertent errors and inappropriate assumptions that can mess up your chances. And it does it without either coddling you or harshing on you.
This book came out in 2000, but it does a good job of covering the basics of online publication--better than I've seen in many other places, actually. It doesn't just cover online versions of print magazines or a brief discussion of electronic rights. Instead it goes in-depth into 'zines, content providers, building your own web site in order to attract editors to you, and so on. It also goes into the business side of writing: business filing, taxes and contracts. It discusses how you can choose and create a specialty for yourself, and how you can decide whether or not you should develop an article into a book proposal!
This is a fantastic book. It contains only a handful of typos of the wouldn't-be-caught-by-a-spell-checker variety (most people probably wouldn't even notice). The advice is helpful and encouraging yet practical and realistic. I've rarely seen an approach that so clearly manages to convey the things to watch out for when freelancing without becoming preachy, condescending or morose, and there's plenty of advice in here that I haven't seen repeated in a dozen other places.
