Love Aroused Under the Apple Tree.......2007-02-26
This book is quite interesting, and it has given me alot to think about.Orie Miller takes passages from Song of Solomon and shows how he prophesied about different things that would happen and take place. It has been really neat to see scriptures at different places in the Bible, and see how it came to pass in the New Testament, or see how it is even being fullfilled today! Like for example-the Muslims. They beleive that by killing Americans they will be praised and rewarded for their "martydom",and they are doing what God expects. It has come to pass just as Jesus said that in the latter times they will think that by killing you, they are doing God justice. This book is really good and I would reccomend it.

These fast-paced workouts emphasize skills development, good sportsmanship, and teamwork while allowing coaches to easily evaluate player's abilities and focus on areas for improvement. Customer Reviews:
great little book.......2006-11-10
I've been coaching youth baseball for several years now. I got this book at the start of the 9-10 yr. group winter ball season. It has some great ideas on how to manage and run the practices and interact with the families. It has some really good drills that the kids like to complete. Not much on specific mechanics and skills, e.g. you won't find how to teach a kid to pitch, or what specifically to look for in a struggling batter. If you're a little nervous about moving up a level, or how to fill up your first several pracices, I recommend this book.
Great Book for Mangagers of 9-10 year olds.......2005-04-29
I had been looking for a book on how to conduct practices with 9-10 year old players. This book's title was "perfect". It outlined my first 5 practices and gave me precise instructions on how and when to conduct each drill. I consider myself a knowledgeable baseball guy but always had trouble on what drills to run for this age group. This book gives easy to understand detail of each drill with diagrams when needed.
I have just completed my fifth practice and have had parents of the players come up to me and tell me that they think my practice and drills are great. I owe it all to this book.
The twinkie eating contest at the end of the first practice was a player favorite. Also, as a graduate of Eastern Illinois University, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the author was from Charleston, IL.
It's Okay for Young Kids, but There Are Other Books Too.......2005-01-08
This is a fine, middle-of-the road book on coaching kids. It's especially aimed at coaches of 8 to 10 year-old teams. After reading all the 5-star reviews, I was expecting a tour-d-force and this book, while valuable, simply is not that special.
It has some interesting drills for young players, but is devoid of any real baseball skills descriptions. The book focuses on the basic throwing, catching, and hitting skills. It all flows together if you're a post-Tball and pre-skilled-play coach. It does have some handy cut-out diagrams and a very good bibliography.
This book also has some good tips for dealing with parents. However Dr.Fortanasce's "Life Lessons from Little League" is a much better book on a coach's relationships with his players and their parents. Similarly, Ripkin, Bouroughs, Cluck, Kendall, Voorheis and others all have more in-depth books on baseball skills.
Check out Amazon and look at the wide range of coaching books available.
Simple and Effective.......2004-03-29
There are numerous books out there for coaches that have the same goal as The Perfect Season: to arm the coach with tons of drills at his disposal to get the most out of his players. Unlike other books, these drills aren't needlessly complicated, don't require all kinds of pricey equipment that isn't standard in your bag (you probably want to purchase a tee and some simple cones, but that's all I needed), and won't confuse your children as they try to execute them.
Also, Bartlett provides solid estimates for the time to complete every drill, allowing you to mix and match to meet the needs of your team and your timeframe. I've found myself falling in love with many of the drills, and the players do enjoy them. This book doesn't eliminate time spent standing around, but it reduces it exponentially.
The drills are good for all ages, as even high school players would benefit from some. However, it's perfect for coaches in 9- and 10-year old leagues, where kids are first able to bunt and steal and coaches struggle to teach and strategize these new tools. If you coach in a league for 9- and/or 10-year olds, I would recommend you order this immediately. Everyone will benefit from it, but that demographic needs it.
Buy copies of this book for your coaching friends!.......2004-03-24
I own more than a dozen books on how to coach youth baseball, so when a fellow coach dropped "The Perfect Season" on my lap, I wasn't exactly excited about reading it. I figured that I already knew it all. I was wrong. I was so impressed with this book that I am writing this review as I place an order for four more copies, which I plan to pass out to my baseball-coaching friends. Any baseball coach who deals with pre-teens -- from T-ball teams to U-12 travel teams -- would be neglecting his duty to his players and their parents if "The Perfect Season" weren't in his library. This book covers the needed basics for both new coaches and veteran youth coaches, from dealing with parents who fly into rages to dealing with the infield fly rule. I especially liked the detailed descriptions of fun drills that I had never even heard of. The book's main emphasis is to teach youth how to play baseball by improving their individual techniques and their game strategies. The author recognizes that creating better baseball players is a more important coaching goal than finishing a T-ball season undefeated. More power to him!

Customer Reviews:
You don't need it........2007-06-21
Limited. Almost useless. Didn't even answer the question of "Who/Whom usage" very clearly. The author wants you to follow her preferences in order to write better. Hey...thanks, but no thanks. I'll write my own way. And you should too. Forget the book.
Good reference.......2007-03-26
I keep this book on my desk for easy reference. Many times people have questions that can be found here in a jiffy. The basics are usually what trip people up. The book contains proper usage of often times miss-used words. Like "further and farther", "lie and lay" as well as verb tense and agreement. I recommend it for anyone who wants to use good grammer.
Something Most All of Us Could Use.......2007-02-15
I have both, Write Right! and Rewrite Right! in my essential writer's bookshelf, and use both often.
I love Jan Venolia's approach, info and style, and Lord knows we can nearly all use some help now and then with those pesky sentence fragments, spellings, and all the other horrors we confront daily in our quest to be not only read, but understood and enjoyed.
I've used Jan's sane advice in crafting both my books.
A Good Review for Good Writing.......2005-08-05
This is a simple, direct, concise review of basic grammar, indispensible for anyone with a short memory and a strong desire to write right. I purchased several copies so that I could give each member on my staff a copy for their desk with the instructions to read it and use it. It will be helpful to improve anyone's writing abilities. The contents are well organized and the examples are very helpful. This book is so good I sometimes use it for bedtime reading when I am preparing to write a special article so that I can do better.
Relief for Beginners.......2002-10-07
I'm just beginning to teach a freshman writing course at a local college for the first time. Although I have a master's degree in English, I should confess that I've used grammar by "feel." That is to say, I didn't know the rules, but I have read a lot, and I just wrote by instinct. I'm not defending this approach, just explaining!
So now I'm faced with the necessity of teaching grammar to my freshmen students. Alas! After a couple of embarrassing and week lectures, I went to the bookstore to get help. I spent about four hours looking for grammar books I could stand to read myself, and that would help me learn enough to teach my students. Most of the books were very technical and overly-detailed for me, and surely for my students as well. However, I found this book, along with a couple of others that were truly a relief in their clarity, fun approach, and pared down lessons.
So, for anyone else who's just starting out studying grammar, I highly recommend this book. It's simple, relevant, understandable, and whimsical. It's not scary, too technical, and too much information. I don't think you'll be disappointed, unless you really WANT to learn every detail.
Also, the other books I found that were helpful were Grammar for Smart People by Barry Tarshis, and The Everything Grammar and Style Book by Susan Thurman. There's another one called Woe is I that I didn't buy but am thinking about doing so. All of these even look fun, so I brought them in to show my students. I thought perhaps if they saw that grammar books don't have to be boring, boring, and more boring, they might someday possibly maybe consider thinking about buying one of them.

Book Description
This new edition of a classic book on the impact of the Vietnam War on Americans reintroduces the haunted voices of the Vietnam era to a new generation of readers. In a new introduction, Myra MacPherson reports on the legacy of the war and its impact on contemporary political life, interviews a number of her principal characters to bring their stories up to date, and reflects on what has changed, and what hasn't, for the haunted generation in the years since these interviews were conducted.
Customer Reviews:
Enduring.......2002-03-10
This gripping generational saga remains as fresh and moving as "Hey Jude." In an astounding feat of reporting, Myra Macpherson takes us from the priviledged sanctuaries of middle-class college students to the bloody battlefields where poor blacks and whites faced the terror of massed North Vietnamese Army divisons. Today's post-draft generation of college students would do well to read how lucky they are, how their forebears faced the agony of having to choose between fighting in a loathsome war or fleeing to Canada. In one scene as alarming as it was when it was written nearly 25 years ago, one young man facing conscription cuts off his trigger finger with a kitchen knife.rather than go to Vietnam. Macpherson's real triumph of reporting, however, is in finding two brothers who served in Vietnam -- one now a United States senator -- who come home from the war with distinctly different opinions on whether it was worth fighting. This, of course, serves as a metaphor for the entire generation. If you think the 60s were all about flower children and free love, you will be shocked, and moved, by this engrossing book.
what the experts say.......2002-01-23
Joseph Heller, author of Catch 22, said of "Long Time Passing: Vietnam and the Haunted Generation" "There has been no better body of war literature that I know of." Arnold R. Isaacs, noted autority on Vietnam, author of "Vietnam Shadows" writes "Any approach to the subject of Vietnam's aftermath must begin with Myra MacPherson's ground breaking book. Her book, among the first to break the long national silence on the war, remains one of the most moving and important works on the Vietnam bookshelf."
This new edition features a vital and topical new introduction that links the Vietnam Veteran Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)experience with today's civilian trauma following 9/11. It also connects Vietnam with present foreign affairs and military policies, including the war on terrorism in Afghanistan.
Yesterday's foot soldiers in Vietnam who are now leaders in the military and politics also reflect on Vietnam and provide new insight, as do those who were youthful leaders in the anti-war movement.
This brilliant examination of the generation is must reading, not only for those who lived through the war, but especially for a younger generation who can learn about--and learn from--the past.
Thoughtful & Absorbing Look At The Vietnam War Come Home!.......2000-08-06
Reading this book was like revisiting the political cauldron that was the sixties. The author, a noted journalist for the Washington Post, chronicles the issues and matters that divided a country against itself, and split a generation of young Americans in half. Using a data base of hundreds of in-depth interviews with a representative sample of members of the baby-boomer generation coming of age in the sixties, Myra MacPherson explores the social, cultural, and political topography of the times, taking a deep and sometimes disturbing look at the at the wounds opened by the war in Vietnam, the sense of pride of both the pro-war and anti-war factions, both of whom seem convinced they had made the right decisions in participating either as combatants in the armed services or as protestors against the war. It was indeed a fabled albeit rancorous time, of which much has been written. Yet Ms. MacPherson centers in well on these issues related to the Vietnam War that so riveted the nation's attention and polarized a generation.
The saving grace of this entertaining and fascinating book is in the wide variety of individual stories it tells. Quite an interesting range of stories unfold in these pages, from the anti-war protestors who burned draft cards, marched in protests all over the nation and even fled to Canada to avoid military service to the largely blue-collar and mostly un- deferred volunteers who were anxious to serve their country, right or wrong. And serve they did, in the millions over the decade of active fighting in Southeast Asia. In some cases we hear from people who went to frightening extremes to escape the war, men who exiled themselves, or went underground in America. Some gave up the ghost and either filed as conscientious objectors or chose to go to jail rather than serve. Some starved themselves into ill health or even mutilated themselves to avoid the draft. Heading north to Montreal became a philosophically rite of passage for any number of young men who for a variety of reasons would rather leave the country than love what it was doing in Vietnam. We also hear from a variety of women who were involved, either as the lovers, wives, or sisters of the young men involved, or who were philosophically, politically, or socially opposed to the war.
On the other side, we hear from the young men and women who paid such a life's ransom for their patriotism, adventurism, and curiosity in serving in the military and many of them volunteering for Vietnam. So many fine young people were lost, and in turned lost so much, either through death or permanent disability that many of their fellow baby boomers began to think that ours, like the generation of the First World War, was a "lost generation". Often homecoming soldiers coming home in uniform were spit upon by cruel and stupid people, civilians who should have understood that most of these men served nobly and proudly on behalf of their generation. I once personally witnessed an enlisted buddy angrily attack such a provocateur. Yet, on the other hand, many of the veterans became quite vocal opponents of the war they had just come home from. It was this kind of activity that did so much to educate the rest of the population.
In truth, there were so many casualties on both sides of the fence, so many veterans and anti-war activists who had their lives ruined by the turmoil that aged around them that it is still difficult to recollect. This is a haunting and memorable book, a well written, compassionately framed study in the mischief the war did to everyone it touched; the young men, their wives and lovers, their brothers and sisters, their parents, and the community at large. Although the book is not currently in print, I am sure you can get a copy through Amazon's used book service, or by asking your local bookstore to do a search for you. I hope you find it as worthwhile a reading experience as I did.
Reading this you will understand the vet's pride & hurt........1999-02-10
If you did not participate as a soilder, this is the closest you could get to understand the true feelings of those that did serve. If you were a protester, you will feel your shame.
Should Be Required Reading!.......1998-12-19
Not only for those who lived through this time in our country but for the young who only know of it as some sort of "folk legend" of the past. MacPherson offers personal perspectives from every possible angle.

An interesting read..........2001-05-21
It is the year of 1969 and the Vietnam War is taking place. A young man named Jonas Duncan is sent to live in a small town called Passot, on the northern Californian coast.
Jonas' dad had always loved the military. Dragging Jonas and his mother Letty from camp to camp. His dad, Hugh, wants Jonas to join the Navy and to follow in his father's footsteps. But one day Letty dies in a car crash and Hugh is sent to fight in Vietnam. Jonas is stuck with his Aunt Hester McAffee until he turns eighteen. Then he'll get out of this small town.
Going agaisnt his Aunt's rules he befriends Gideon Brophy and falls in love with his rumored daughter, Auleen Delange.
Auleen is reluctant at first, leaving Jonas once in a grassy field, way out in the forest. She tells Jonas that "McAffe's and Delanges don't mix." But Jonas intervines and tells Auleen that even if his mother was an McAffe, it doesn't make him one. He is and will always be a Duncan.
Jonas leaves Hester before he turns eighteen and goes to the Berkely campus with Auleen to help protest about the Vietnam War. Though he ends up going back to Passot when he finds out that his father is missing in action. He makes a decision that will change his life forever..
In my opinion this book was good. This was my first time ever reading a novel in the setting of the Vietnam War. The book had many twists and turns in it. It was a plot more different than all of the books I have read. There were so many creative ideas.
I think it is great that Adrienne Jones choose to write about this cetain era. Most kids like me, probably haven't read a book in this setting. A lot of author's don't really turn the Vietnam War into an adolescent's novel, having fiction and non-fiction at the same time. I actually learned something about the war! WOW!(amazing for me)
If you are really desperate for anything to read, buy it. But if you're more laid-back like me. I'd say you should go to your local public library and pick up a copy of this book.

Vibrant and creative, Kathy is determined to use her talents in a way that will make her stand out from the rest of her high school crowd. Cheerleader, actress, writer, folksinger--Kathy tries on all of these roles and attempts to fit in with different groups of students on her way to finding out who she really is. Although Long Time Passing is set in the late 1960s and is filled with political and social commentary from the time, the story rings with contemporary appeal. Author Linda Crew pulls off something that few young-adult authors dare attempt: she writes convincingly about a strong, well-adjusted character with little buried angst to hold her back from the people and dreams in which she believes. Kathy, bubbling with energy and hope for her future, will energize readers--especially girls dazzled by possibilities in their own lives.
Book Description
Outspoken individualist Kathy is out of step with most girls at her Oregon high school. What's Kathy doing stuck in her small town when so much is happening in the world--Vietnam protests, civil rights battles, free love, kids running away to be hippies in Haight-Ashbury? She may be stuck, but she's determined to start living her real life now, and to find her one true talent and her true love.

Read this!!!!.......1999-05-24
I don't know what it is with this book but somehow the word jump out at you. It's so realistic, the characters really live. It's almost as if Linda Crew is writing an autobiography of her own life. Rulez.

A coming of age story with a difference; Linda Crew's young heroine comes from a stable,
middle class family that has done a good job of raising their two children, twins Kathy and Kenny.
Kathy struggles with choices typical for teenagers in the sixties and makes intelligent decisions.
She isn't perfect, just smart. She also is funny, scattered, passionate and thoroughly likable.
Each anecdote rings true, from her disappointing audition for "The Miracle Worker" to the
confrontation with a group of "jocks" one morning before school. Linda Crew makes Kathy a real girl, someone to cry with, cheer for and relate to.
The problems Kathy faces as a teenager in the
sixties are the same problems teenagers are
dealing with now. Her ability to make wise
choices makes her an excellent heroine and role
model, not just for kids but for their parents too.
