Book Description
The San Rafael Swell is located in east central Utah, south of Price and west of the town of Green River. This is an area of little water, lots of slickrock sandstone, soaring cliffs, upturned geologic formations and slot canyons.
This all-new 3rd Edition of the book that first came out in 1986, has been expanded from 160 to 224 pages, and there are about 90 more fotographs than in the 2nd Edition. This edition still has all the hikes from previous printings, but each has been re-visited and updated. The author re-walked most of the canyons. The biggest changes for this 3rd Edition is the addition of 8 technical slot canyons where you'll need ropes and rappelling gear to get all the way through. These canyons are either bolted, or have slings around chokestones for easy rappelling (usless the anchors have been washed away!). This means a new level of challenge and excitment for the adventurous hiker. Also included is an expansion to the colorful history of the San Rafael Swell (Old Spanish Trail, the Livestock Industry and Mining), plus expanded geology and information about the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry.

The historical background and geological cross-sections (of which there is at least one for every hiking area) show Michael Kelsey at his best; I have battered my borrowed copy (which I need to replace) pretty well. The most understandable criticism in my view is the lack of difficulty ratings; just remember that Kelsey is a fast hiker so go conservative at first to see what your multiplier factor is, and remember that 3rd and 4th class scrambling often, but not consistently, constitutes straightforward hiking to him. And bring your own topo map; his sketches are a good reference for route, access, and other descriptions in the text, but are not meant to be your only map. You wouldn't want to be deprived of adventure because your guidebook gave you GPS coordinates for each footstep you are to take, so I have no problem with route descriptions like "look for one of the several ways down" and so forth. There is also the occasional rant against imagined people who want to "lock up" the land and keep everyone out, which I take as a slightly odd way of expressing his otherwise understandable viewpoint on access restrictions for popular but sensitive areas.
Bad maps, bad estimates, but good pictures.......2006-05-15
I talked with a park ranger who made the comment, "We use Steve Alan's book to find all the people who get lost from Kelsey's descriptions." I didn't believe this until I went down to the Swell and did the Virgin Spring hike described in Kelsey's book. He said that he did the hike in 9 hours. Using GPS I would estimate the hike at just about 30 miles total. Steve Allen recommends 2-3 days to complete the same hike. Kelsey's descriptions of this complicated hike are dangerous and sure to leave you searching for hours for the trail in a place where getting lost is easy because of infrequent use. He also puts a large disclaimer in this book "Don't blame me" because someone blamed him for getting lost on the local news. The only thing good about Kelsey's book are few good pictures. Save your money and buy Steve Allen's book.
Using Kelsey's work as reference material........2001-06-21
As a student of geography and land use planning, Kelsey's book has provided further references for deeper research.
New hikes in this edition.......2000-03-18
I've done several hikes based on the 2nd edition of this book (and other Utah hiking books by Kelsey), and I've learned that for the simple hikes, he offers plenty of good help. For the longer or more complicated hikes, I will always consult both Kelsey and Steve Allen's canyoneering books and several maps. I've also learned that Kelsey walks much faster than I do. Once you figure that kind of thing out, it's a pretty helpful guide. This edition has added some new hikes that look pretty interesting (that are not in Steve Allen). If you're planning hikes in the San Rafael Swell, you don't have much choice besides Kelsey and Allen. I say buy them both.
Interesting History, Passable Hiking Info.......2000-03-12
The Swell is a great place for exploring interesting slot canyons difficult and easy. This guide has a very good history section, but is a little weak on the hiking info. Why do I say this? Because Kelsey's information is not always accurate - he often makes a few guesses, underestimates difficulties or distances, and sometimes just gets things a little confused. Steve Allen's 'Canyoneering' is a much better primary source, and this makes a good secondary source.

I found this book to be invaluable as a comprehensive source of information about telecommunications networks and related subjects. Unlike many other texts, this book does not assume that the reader is a consultant in the industry or has a strong engineering background. Even the choice of each chapter subject is carefully thought out so as to save the time and effort required of the businessperson who needs focused knowledge quickly. Pecar and Garbin do a great service by providing an outline, or basis for research of the expansive technologies and practical and historical approaches to the challenge of telecommunications. This book will see a lot of use in my office.. if I can keep it there.. It usually ends up in somebody elses!.

As a medical professional, farm owner and provider of care for horses, dogs and cats, I have found this manual helpful. It provides clear information for the reader who has at least some knowledge of medical and veterianry vocabulary.
A copy of this important book should be on the shelf of every farm and livestock owner.

If you have pets or livestock- then this book >may
< be quite handy. I have used it several times to help with ailments, drug use, etc however- this is NOT a book meant to replace your own veterinarian. Don't even think it will. People who graduate vet school are trained professionals, the rest of us on the farm might have practical experience- and that is just one small part of animal health.
I am happy with mine- having a medical background helps in reading this as it is not meant for the lay reader. Would I buy it again, yes. Would I recommend it to the farmer down the road? No.

Being a veterinarian i would like to review all the material that i studied during my undergraduation. I thought Mercks would be the best to fulfill my interests and i found that the contents in the book are better than what i expected. I suggest this book to all the veterinarians across the world and i am sure this book will make u memorize alot of information which u may not get in any other book.

Veterinary Help for the Non-Veterinarian.......2006-08-18
This reference book is excellent for people with some knowledge
of medical care (I am a nurse). I always use the Merck Manual
for human info, but as a first-time dog owner who has a dog with
a few problems, I asked our vet if such a book existed for
veterinary issues. I was delighted when he told me that yes,
there is a Merck Veterinary Manual! The non-science minded
person might find the terminology daunting. The other book I
bought at the same time was
"The Five Minute Veterinary Consult", and I find that the two
books together give me all that I need in answers.

This is a great book. If you already know alot, then you will be all set. I've only been an assistant for 2years, and reading this is difficult, if I didn't have a vet dictionary I would be lost. If you are well trained then I see this as a wonderful book to have, maybe invaluable.
Great referencing!.......2002-11-25
As a veterinary technician who graduated in '94 and is out of the clinics, but still works in Animal care, it is the best. I refer back to it all the time. I don't remember everything I was taught and especially being away from practices, it is perfect. It has EVERYTHING!! I carry it with me, it is like my bible! Nothing beats this either, I had other books that I have tried to refer to, but this is ideal as I stated it has everything.

The Merck Manual is a MUST HAVE for all vet students. It discusses most species and the common problems of each. It has an excellent appendix with all sorts of useful information including normal TPRs, conversion charts, and zoonoses, etc. While it does not go into great depth on pathophysiology, it is a perfect place to look up quick rule outs and basics. No matter what species or organ system we're studying, I use my Merck nearly every day.
