Product Description
From America's Heartland, the Great Plains, comes the genuine article when it comes to real-world strength and power: Steve Justa. Justa is the guy whose original "Barrel Lifting" course (contained in this book) was a cult favorite for years, and for anyone who remembers his White Buffalo ad, we need say no more. If you want to find out what you've been missing by hiding out with only really nice weights to lift, grab this - the original - "functional strength" training book. 112 pp.
Customer Reviews:
Good stuff.......2006-11-03
I found several things to work into mt training time. Somethings I read in it never would have even occured to me. Just about anybody would be able to get at least one useful peice of information out of Mr. Justa's book, and that is what will make this a good buy for anybody wanting to increase real functional strength. Pumpers and Posers need not purchase.
GOOD STUFF from a good ol' boy..........2006-06-30
Justa puts strength training in a brand new light with this book. It's refreshing to see someone shatter all of the "proper procedures" most trainers/fitness people preach on a regular basis. Manual labor is one of the most practical ways of aquiring FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH....and Justa helps put it all in perspective so that you can experience it for yourself...
A Great Read.......2006-04-03
Very impressive stuff! There are enough ideas in here to give you a lifetime of workout ideas.
As a personal trainer, I read many books on training - good, scholarly material that often has many footnotes citing recent scientific research. I've enjoyed a fair number of them, and have picked up useful information. But they generally sit on my shelf, and I read Steve's over and over again. It's jam-packed with ideas (no holding back for the next $25 book), and is full of anecdotes that are truly fun to read and sometimes hilarious.
It probably is true that someone who is looking to get cute little muscles that will impress the Sex and the City hotties in bars may find this to be the wrong book. Any decent book of bodybuilding routines will achieve that. This book is about sheer strength, which has nothing to do with spending hour after hour doing the same benchpress routine in the same gym ad infinitum (oh, and annoying other gym patrons).
And you've got to like a guy who has such a complete disregard for a photo-shoot wardrobe.
Another thing that distinguishes this book is material concerning muscular endurance, or being able to do heavy work for a very long time (extremely long times, in his case). Again, something that is often glossed over or ignored in other strength books.
Finally, there is great motivational material. His passion for what he does shines through at all times, and it's easy to get fired up reading this. It's very conversational, and somewhat rough in writing style, but again, this is a refreshing change from stuffy academic style.
Overrated!.......2005-08-31
Somewhat disappointed about this book and his content. Some good charts of exercices with their linked sport. But nothing really exciting and inspiring to me, looking at pictures of a fat, bald man moving huges pieces of crap in a dusty junkyard. He proved his point; you can train with everything! Indeed, if you live in a dumpster!
Not a bad book, but an overrated one!
If you're looking for the Strength Training Bible! Forget about this book and buy Dinosaur Training by Brooks D.Kubik! It's a whole lot better!
Very Innovative!.......2005-05-08
For some time I have been one of those who, for some reason, believed that strength could only be built with barbells and dumbells in a nice, clean gym. This peculiar way of thinking was due to being under the spell of body-bulding and the fashionable scene that goes along with it nowadays.
Sure barbells and dumbells need to be a big part of a strength trainers "arsenal" but, thanks to writers like Brooks Kubik ("Dinosaur Training"), Matt Furey, and the author of this book, Steve Justa I have come to see that odd-objects (sanbags, barrels, even the human body) can be used to build super strength. These awkward shaped objects build muscles that remain unaffected by "normal" barbell training and, like some barbell exercises (squats, deadlifts, bench press), these types of lifts are compound exercises which emphasize that a great many muscles work together. This breaks with the body-building paradigm which emphasizes isolation.
Justa underscores saftey and gives methods he uses to train safely.
He also emphasizes the importance of building up the tendons and ligaments, a point entirely missing in most recent literature (thugh it was important among old-time strength builders).
Furthermore, you will get caught up in Justa's enthusiam for the iron game and the resultant greater motivation you enjoy from reading this book will lead to bigger gains. Good luck!

Geek Pool Book.......2007-09-09
We bought a house with an inground pool 5 years ago. A bit of a surprise really. We had ZERO experience with pools, and knew only by rumor that we were buying something that required a LOT of care and maintenance. I hunted through bookstores for a guide I could learn from. I am a technical writer by profession, so I know a thing or two about how to present complex ideas to the innocent. Browsing through this volume I was impressed with the author's skill at getting ideas across (well structure informattion - here's the idea, heres' the basics, here's the gory details). I bought it on the strength of his organization and writing, not on the content (about which I knew zilch).
It is still in regular use 5 years later. YES, it is technical. YES, it sometimes provides way too much information for the novice. But if you have a brain and you can handle some complexity, this book is BRILLIANT. I knew nothing, and in very short order I learned what I needed for basic care. This book is a bible for pool maintenance. Over the years I've learned (from experience guided by this book) how to strip a DE filter, how to repair my Polaris pool robot, and more about water chemistry than I ever thought possible. This past summer ('07) it guided us through a plaster refinishing (pool is ~30 years old) and taught me how to restart the pool.
It IS written by a pool professional, FOR pool professionals, and even has advice on how to run a pool maintenance business (which is of zero interest to me). But if you can learn from a pro talking to other pros, this book is it.
The "Haynes" manual for pools.......2006-11-10
This book is to swimming pools what the "Haynes" car maintenance manuals are to your car. It contains all the information required to maintain your pool, even though probably someone else is going to do it for you. If you own a pool, it is worth reading the book to understand what the service technician should and shouldn't be doing, and when the pool is in need of help. It can also help you save some money by doing the work yourself. The book is entirely about maintaining a pool, not owning one. It is written in a friendly, readable style, and you can simply keep it as a reference manual to know what to do when things go wrong. If you are considering installing a pool or spa, this book will show you what you are letting yourself in for. If there is one omission in the text it is that the author ignores electric pool cleaning robots, though they are probably the most effective way of keeping the pool clean.
Save your Money.......2006-04-24
This book was a wasste of time and money. The book focuses more on being a pool professional then the actual "how-to" a pool owner needs to work on their pool. It has more information on changing a light fixtures and on bilking wealthy Malibu folks out of cash then actual useful information.
After reading this (useless!) book I went to my local library and reearched several books on the subject, there is a title called "What color is your pool?" That has lots of information for the first time pool owner. There may be other more technical guides our there, but this book has few drawings and illustrations, poor writing, and ultimately is lacking in adequate information.
Trust me...SAVE YOUR MONEY!
Helpful Tool.......2005-08-26
This book is a helpful tool for any pool owner or someone interested in having a pool.
NOT the best book to buy........2005-05-15
This is my first Amazon review, but I feel compelled to share this experience with others.
This book as said to be for the professional and the novice. It was said to contain all the information one could possibly need. It was suggested that you could take what you want from the weighty tome, and leave the rest. In reality the book is clearly NOT written for a new pool owner. In fact, its not written for an experience pool owner. The book was written for a pool repairman. Moreover, it does not contain the practicle information a pool professoinal would require to steer clients toward pool products.
Which cleaner should you get- Vacume or pressure driven? No answer here. What about a heating- Solar, oil, gas? No advice, no direction....
In fact, the book reads more like the diary of a pool man. About how one manufacurer was driven out of business by refusing to compromise quality, or how he cared for the pool of come Malibu celebrity.
Having recently purchased a home with an in-ground pool, I have read three books so far, and gotten quite and education. This book however failed in almost every regard. Finnally, the book deliniates ways of making money of customers as a pool professional. Information I simply have no use for.
Lastly, it bears mentioning that there is a quote on the book jacket from another Amazon reviewer "If you want to buy one book on swimming pools this is it!" Why not a quote from a noted pool authority or publication? Why quote some anonymous amzazon.com user like you or me? Most likely because there were no favorable reviews from newspapers or magazines.
This book was more then a waste of 30 dollars. It was also a waste of time. Unless you need to know how to change things like light fixtures in to pool. The book is not awful, so I gave it 2 stars, but I urge you to look elsewhere.

A Workshop in a Book.......2006-03-03
Ever wonder what it would be like to have your very own personal workshop in your home? One that you can walk away from and return to at a better time? Are you at least an intermediate quilter who is looking for more of a challenge than the old "tried and true"? Well, look no further. Gail Garber has delivered all that and more in Stellar Journeys. The instructions are precise and easy to follow, one step at a time, using all of the diagrams which are well done, and there are a lot of them. While this book is not for beginners, it is a wonderful text workshop with bright photos of quilts that will inspire the best of us. A great way to use up those scraps from the stash, too. The reader is encouraged to use a wide variety of fabrics without getting too concerned as to "will this fabric go with the others?" dilemna that sometimes plague us. Ms. Garber covers everything from soup to nuts in this book about making stellar stars, including valued information about thread and many other issues that revolve around making a quilt successfully.
stellar journeys.......2006-01-30
this is a wonderful book which will help you drafting stars. I found this book very helpful.
Beautiful quilt design book.......2005-08-27
This lovely book shows you how to draft your own patterns for quilts using curved flying geese designs, and large circular stars.
It's an enjoyable book to browse through with plenty of inspirational photographical material - many of the quilts in the photographs really are artworks rather than simple bed quilts and I particularly loved the one of the tiger in the jungle.
Full instructions are provided on how to draft the circular stars and create your own designs with the techniques in the book. The author also discusses the technique of paper piecing as this is the logical method for the complex construction of the patterns in this volume. Three patterns are provided at the end of the book for you to practise learning the techniques discussed and all in all I thoroughly enjoyed browsing through this well laid out and carefully produced volume.
Book Description
This traditional design is taken to soaring heights with the use of a new method that makes the pattern quicker and easier than ever.

I'll never make flying geese another way..........2000-06-15
This is an amazing method for making fast and accurate flying geese. I have done it all the other ways I think that are available and this is the easiest with the least amount of fabric waste. The cutting directions for cutting the geese the final time need to be read slowly and maybe twice, but once you cut them the first time you'll have it down. I received this as gift and I'd highly recommend it to anyone searching for an easier way to make those wonderful geese that are so much a part of quiltmaking.
Fast and ACCURATE.......2000-05-03
Previously, I had tried another "fast" way of doing flying geese which was not satisfactory as the blocks varied in size . Most were too small. I hesitated to try another method. But, after someone recommended this book, I decided to check out this method. Mary Sue Suit's way of piecing flying geese is fast and accurate. There is minimal waste of fabric. Also, she includes many different flying geese patterns. I am using one of them (Yankee Puzzle)in an internet quilting row swap. The trimming instructions looked a bit intimidating when I first read them, but when I tried them I got the hang of it right away.

Awesome book.......2007-10-17
I absolutely loved this book. One of the best books I've read thus far and I read as often as I can. I adored the first story but I also very much enjoyed the rest of the book. I will be sure to read it again one day and recommend it to any one.
Loved It!.......2006-08-19
All four of these novels are wonderful. It was a nice surprise to see that the characters from the first book were incorporated into the second one.
The first two stories are suspenseful and mysterious, which makes it difficult to put down the book.
This is the perfect book to read if you want to enjoy the medieval time period; the land of maidens, knights, and castles. Even though each book is somewhat short (little over 100 pages each) it didn't seem to affect the story. This is a great read for vacations or at the beach, or if you have a few afternoons free.
My favorite from Barbour/Heartsong.......2005-03-29
This book is my favorite book ever (second only to my Bible)!! I read it straight through--it was impossible to put down. The best part is that the book is quite thick and the print is smaller than usual, so it's nice and long. Unlike some other books I've read, I wasn't left with lots of questions at the end. My favorite story was the first one about Arianne...this is an especially good one if you like mysterious twists mixed in with the romance. Another reason I liked it was because her husband really represents Jesus to her, even to the point of shedding his blood so that she won't have to. The second story is really good too, because it involves the characters from the first story with some new twists and new people. My cousin is borrowing the book at the moment, and each time I talk to her she is oohing and awww-ing over whatever chapter she has just finished. I plan to read it again as soon as she gives it back!
Sweet and relaxing........2005-01-20
This book has four different stories of brave woman who meet their knights in shining armor.
The first girl,
Arianne:She finds love in an arranged marriage made by her cruel father, but her new husband's past may cause some trouble.
Helena:Runs away from her cruel family and finds love in and safety in the arms of her knight.
Mary:She watches her father die, and continues on with the hard life she feels she has been given. Will love work out amidst all the sickness?
Jeanine:She is being forced to marry a cruel man to save her family from ruin when her life is in danger sill her knight rescue her in time?
This is a good book a bit unrealistic but a relaxing read.
Good read.......2004-09-03
I enjoyed this book and it's four separate stories. Great CHRISTian romance. Excellent period descriptions.
