Can't beat it for the price.......2002-10-27
This is a great little book that will easily fit in your purse or travel bag. There is a lot of information in the book regarding many "cat" issues. I liked that it also tells you when it is best to seek a vet's advice. I found it to be an easy, fairly quick read and I found a lot of good tips that I can use with my 5 year old cat and my 17 year old cat. For example, you can give your kitty a tiny bit of butter to help with hair balls, etc. I really have to say, check out the previews that they put up on the site here.

Book Description
CDC (cul-de-canard) feathers are one of the most popular fly-tying materials. CDC's water-resistant properties make it particularly useful for tying dry flies, emergers, and nymphs, especially in small sizes. Tying Flies with CDC brings together the CDC patterns and tying techniques of creative, innovative fly tiers from around the world. The book gives background on CDC, how it was used in the past and how it is used today, and details aspects of fishing with CDC flies.

Great History, Good Patterns.......2003-05-29
Who would have thought that preen-feathers would turn out to become such a fine addition to the tools of the flytyer? The Swiss & French are the culprits!
This book starts with a fine historical review and moves on to a number of excellent patterns and techniques. CDC dubbing is nicely addressed and it is a very valuable component of the book. Overall, it is a fine addition to any flytier's library.
There are a few areas that the book could have covered, and perhaps should have covered - but didn't. I don't know why - perhaps the editors limited what could be included - because I have no doubts about Mr. Links' skills and interest in the subject.
I would love to see more patterns and some newer techniques covered in this book.
For the last five years I've owned and used a tool of Japanese origin (sort of a three-pin bodkin) designed to allow a tyer to strip a hackle stem of all CDC plumes in a matter of seconds. I've seen the tool for sale (albeit with Japanese instructions) in many flyshops in the US, Europe and Canada and the exclusion of the tool mystifies me. Mr. Links uses the paper clamp / scissor / dubbing-loop method to transfer plumes, and he hand-strips or wraps or lashes the feathers - but simple strip-tie posts / wings are still more complex to tie than they need be.
Still, this is a fine work, and I strongly recommend it.
Good but more detail would have helped.......2003-05-28
The book was a good addition to my library, unfortunatelly some of the tying stepts and more difficult techniques were not well explained, if explained at all.
there is some hockey stuff about US tyers and our presumed inability to pronounce the French languatge that seems to be a bit strained and inappropriate.
overall nice pictures of flies, could have use less anecdotes and biographical material and more technical discussion

Too Much of a (Potentially) Good Thing?.......2006-11-16
ELEMENTS OF ARGUMENT was selected as a textbook for a second-semester English composition course that I instructed for our local state university in the waning days of 2006. More or less the first half of the 866-page book is an instructional textbook and the second half is a collection of essays from a wide variety of authors from classical to contemporary.
Generally speaking, I found the textbook portion to be clearly and logically written, presenting in ten chapters most of the considerations involved in writing persuasive essays. These chapters include annotated essays that illustrate the processes of presenting a claim, supporting it, and being aware of the assumptions--the warrants--that affect both writer and reader. Additional short essays at the conclusion of each chapter are accompanied with generally good writing prompts for practice in writing short papers in response to the readings. Following these chapters are sections dealing with the writing of research papers and with citation formatting in both MLA and APA styles.
The numerous essays that are anthologized in the second half of the book vary greatly in length, topic and style. Throughout the entire book, contemporary essays tend to address topics of importance and interest to today's audience: racial categorizations, cloning, church-state separation, terrorism, rising college costs, torture, divorce, and so forth. The editors do not shy away from contentious subjects, and for that they deserve applause.
Let us look at the value of the book from two perspectives, first as it may be used in a controlled classroom environment and then as it may benefit an independent, nontraditional learner who is engaged in self-improvement.
As a textbook for a course in general composition, the book's focus on argumentation, or persuasive, writing obviously limits the focus of the course itself. Perhaps what is needed is a whole series of composition courses, each focusing on a different aspect of writing, of which persuasion is one valid type. In such an environment, ELEMENTS OF ARGUMENT would be, I feel, a fine textbook for the persuasive writing course. Alas, today we are lucky to get university students through no more than two semesters of composition, and much of that time must be spent in remedial grammar study. In this situation, I think our students would be better served by textbooks that combine composition instruction with a variety of literature types so that students can practice emulating more than just persuasive writing. Furthermore, it has been my experience that many schools change textbooks between the first semester's instruction and the second, even though most of the textbooks are entirely adequate in their scope and length to be used for both semesters. This means that fully half of each textbook goes unread, a terrible waste considering the cost of these texts. Under these practices, cutting the book in half so that students purchase only the instructional part, i.e., the 465 pages of the first ten chapters, would be a vast improvement and a benefit to students faced with increasingly insurmountable textbook and tuition costs.
Now, addressing the independent, self-motivated learner, I suggest that if one wishes to improve one's skill in persuasive writing, this is not a bad book with which to do it, although a skill such as writing effectively requires practice in doing, not simply reading about how to do it. The book is not designed as a self-help text, but reading the first ten chapters closely would certainly do no harm. As for the additional essays in the second 400+ pages, if one enjoys reading essay-style writing, this collection is sufficiently varied so that one can surely find quite a few essays to one's liking. Personally, I find that essay-reading becomes tedious after a while, and I long for at least a good short story if not a book-length work, fiction or otherwise-and I do believe that continual reading of a variety of literary styles does indeed help one improve one's writing, merely by exposure to interesting, well-constructed sentences. I doubt that I would find the motivation to read ELEMENTS OF ARGUMENT from cover to cover just for pleasure.
On an ending note, I found the associated CD, "I-Claim: Visualizing Argument," as well as the instructor's notes in the back of the textbook to be of very limited usefulness. I cannot truthfully say that inclusion of the CD enhances the value of the book to any appreciable extent. In short, if one is particularly interested in studying persuasive-style writing, at least half of the book may be of value; otherwise, I would invest my reading dollars elsewhere.
This is the most boring book.......2006-08-28
I have never read something that is so boring. It is somewhat hard to understand also. The writer uses many difficult words in the text. I still can't believe how boring this book is.
Elements of an argument.......2005-10-25
Excellent book that provides an excellent guide on how to present, state and support ones argument. Highly recommended.
Good Text.......2000-03-28
I found this book to be very help full for not only it's content but it's language and focus. Even though it could but you to sleep. I learned a lot about how to analize arguments not only oraly but on paper over all it's a great book and I would recommed it for any learning envirnmont.
Arguementative.......1999-03-12
This book introduces the important elements of writing and/or reading an arguement. However, I found while reading it I was in danger of falling asleep only to be awakened by its occasional sample arguement and sample advertisements that are intresting. I am unsure if this is just a difficult subject to write about, or what.

Elements of Argument, Rottenberg.......2000-06-22
One of the best books available on the art of argumentation. All the sophistic tricks and ploys meticulously examined and analysed. Once you have mastered how to sniff out fallacies, you can go on to the exercises for review which will teach you how to refute specious arguments and unmask erroneous reasoning... Recommended especially for those who seek to attain clarity and lucidity in arguing their case.... Mandatory reading for politicians and diplomats.....

Memorable Book.......2007-02-23
I read a lot of books as a young adult but these books really stand out in my mind. They are incredibly gripping and well written. I have been trying to track this series down for awhile and could not be more happy to have located them. I read them in the early 90's but still loved the 80's culture (Tab and Joan Jett included) and recently purchased a pair it Tretorns because Meg owned them. All in all, great books for anyone to read!
Eagerly awaiting the next book..........2005-05-14
I think I first read this book back in middle school, in the late 80's; and immediately bought The Presidents Daughter so I could read that too. I'm now 29, and after a LONG search, have FINALLY recovered an original copy of White House Autumn to complete the trilogy. Wonderful writing, who could not love Meg and her family? And I find as I get older, each time I re-read I manage to pick up more detail, more emotion, more understanding. These books are wonderful for teenagers and adults alike. I recently read that a fourth book, titled "The Queen Lives On" will be released this fall; but have yet to get confirmation from any of the publishing companies. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE reprint this series and release the next book!!! I am dying to know how Meg's life has turned out, I would love to read about her college years (and find out if she ended up dating Josh again, LOL).
The best of the Meg trilogy!.......2005-02-03
In my opinion, this is one of White's best works. Although this is technically a YA book, the only real "teen" thing about it is Meg's age. She, her siblings, parents and various White House personas are thoroughly fleshed out, as well as the multitude of psychological issues that come along with being the child of a president. Here, when Meg's position in life leads to her abduction -- an incredibly grave situation -- White combines it with the thoughts running through Meg's mind, which are usually humorous and sarcastic. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
I can't believe it !!!.......2002-08-05
I first read this book in high school becuase a friend told me it was good. After that Ellen Emerson White became one of my favorite authors. I always thought this book was before it's time and would make a really good book today. Just for a lark I thought I'd see if amazon had any out-of-print copies of this book. Image my suprise when I saw it was back in mass market paperback. Like everyone say Long live the queen is somewhat dark tale than the first two but still really great reading.
This book will have you flipping pages faster than a fry boy at Micky D's. It's like you get into Meg's mind and you wonder how would I handle this if I were Megan? This book even though being dark still had it's funny parts. And over all Ellen kept all the people very human. A nice change from most boooks dealing with this subject. I also like how she made her deal with the aftershock of being kidnapped and her relationship with her mother. She does a good job of not leaving you wanting more. This book is so good you want to read it again and again. All these years later I am still not sick of this book.
3rd book is darker but good;disappointing edition quality.......2001-10-31
I have read and reread (and loved, especially the first one) all three Meghan Powers books in their original editions. I am grateful to Hawk Publishing for reprinting these three books (now called the "President's Daughter" series) so that more people can enjoy them, but I do feel that people should know that these reprints are not high quality. They are trade paperbacks with bindings that seem sturdy enough, but the text is not at all crisp -- in fact, it looks like the publisher may have enlarged the pages from the original mass market editions on a Xerox machine and then reprinted these new editions from those copies. I am basing this guess on the fact that the text looks enlarged and somewhat blurry.
The covers of all three of the reprint editions are hideous; the first one shows a girl who looks to be about 8 or 10 years old instead of a teenager, and the covers of the second and third books are not much better.
If you can get past all that, these books are generally marvelous to read. "Long Live the Queen" is much darker than the first two books; Meg is kidnapped and the author does not try to spare us the brutality of this act. This might be a little scary for younger readers, but the book makes a brave and honest attempt to deal with the issues. Again, I am grateful to Hawk for reprinting these, even if the quality is a little disappointing.
