              Book Description

There has been an increased awareness of the need to establish and maintain small-scale forestry in tropical countries. This is due to concerns over continued deforestation, as well as the long-term environmental and economic resources these plantations can contribute if managed successfully. This book examines the constraints that limit the development of small-scale forestry in tropical environments and how they can be overcome.

The authors first explain the background to their research and demonstrate how, in contrast to industrial plantations, small-scale forestry has a wide variety of objectives including the production of fuel wood and non-wood products, the protection of watersheds and wildlife habitats, and carbon sequestration. They examine a broad range of socio-economic topics under the broad themes of policy development, market considerations, the evolution of small-scale forestry systems, and timber and non-wood benefits. In developing countries, for example, small-scale forestry is often regarded as a means of facilitating sustainable regional development. As a result of seven years extensive research they have developed a strong policy line, examining measures such as tax provisions and the targeting of subsidy and extension programs that can help promote the growth of non-industrial forest industries.

The authors present an integrated socio-economic analysis of the opportunities, impediments and challenges to small-scale forestry in the tropics. As such, this book will be required reading for scholars of environmental economics and science, land resource economists, and environmental, forestry and resource managers.

                Book Description

Recent years have seen a rapid growth of interest in farm, community and other small-scale forestry activities. Small-scale private forestry has social benefits which, together with the withdrawal of forest resources from the timber industry, are considered a strong imperative for government intervention to promote free tree planting.

Sustainable Small-Scale Forestry addresses a broad spectrum of important social, economic and policy issues associated with farm forestry which should benefit production and the environment. The volume presents extensive research in both tropical and temperate regions such as Australia, Asia, America and Europe. The importance of these countries exchanging experiences in farm forestry and assistance measures is highlighted.

Edited by members of the Cooperative Research Centre for Tropical Rainforest Ecology and Management, this volume will be essential reading for those in involved with social and economic issues, forest policy, natural and land resource economics, and environmental management. Practitioners, researchers and students of forestry and vegetation management will also find the book to be an indispensable source of reference.

                    Description:
The strategic planning of a forest research organization is based on anticipating the changes in the operational environment of the entire forest cluster and in the organization itself. Scanning operational environment to attain a systematic approach and support for a decision situation can be carried out by applying a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis, for example. In this study, SWOT analyses formed the basis for further operations that were applied in the strategy process of the forest research station. The methods applied in the following phases were scenario analyses based on the external operational environment factors, formulation of strategic factors from the internal operational environment factors, and statistical analyses of the priorities of the strategic factors in the created scenarios. The process and methods applied provided a natural and analytical way for researchers to participate in the strategy process. The operations carried out resulted, for instance, in the identification of factors having high priority in all the scenarios (networking outside the research organization and factors related to international cooperation), and factors that should be given specific emphasis in the event of a probability of a specific scenario being realised. Statistical analyses can also be used to produce information concerning the uncertainties included in the priority calculations of the factors. The approach presented in this study shows how the SWOT analysis can be diversified and utilized in the later phases of the strategy process. Compared to earlier A'WOT applications, the reformulation of the SWOT factors opened new possibilities to use A'WOT-like methods, modern multi-criteria decision-support tools, and statistical analyses in strategy processes, and to utilize the results of the SWOT analysis effectively throughout the process.

                      Description:
The impact of different trade restrictions on Canadian softwood lumber exports to the United States are examined using a spatial equilibrium trade model of the North American (NA) lumber market. Scenarios designed to result in equivalent US domestic market impacts including ad valorem tariffs quotas and a unit tax increase on Canadian timber inputs are simulated. The 27.2% tariff and the quota have the same overall welfare impacts in the two markets with US producers gaining and US consumers losing for an overall market loss of approximately $520 million in the US. Ignoring quota rents, Canadian producers lose and consumers gain as prices fall in Canada for an overall loss of $880 million. Tariff revenues or quota rents, at over $1 billion per year, mean that tariffs (collected by the US) clearly yield a benefit for the US over Free Trade and quotas (rents accruing to Canadian producers) an overall benefit for Canada. If US producer protection is gained through increased Canadian unit timber fees, it has markedly different consequences. Markets that import NA lumber face higher prices in this situation and domestic Canadian prices rise as much as those in the US as the price wedge present in the other scenarios disappears.

These books (how to climb series)are a must for the climber who doesn't allways have a lot of experienced people around. Many great tips. good for referencing back to. Good explanations. And even enjoyable to read.

5 out of 5 stars well worth the money if you want to get into the sport.......2007-01-10

Long has done it again. A.R.C. goes through the more advanced maneuvers of climbing. It is a must have for climbers who want to be more than a indoor or weekend climber, and who want to be able to climb more than 5.9 TR's.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on this sport.......2004-04-23

I get acrophobia just from standing on a deep-pile carpet, so this isn't something I'm ever going to do myself, but I still found it interesting to read about it. I think the people who do this are some of the bravest people I know (as well as probably being completely nuts. :-)). Just looking at some of the pictures showing climbers going up almost featureless, smooth, sheer walls along a little crack set my heart to pounding a little bit.

The book contains a wealth of detail and information on rock climbing and much space is devoted to climbing techniques and strategies. I didn't know there were so many different kinds of grips and holds one could perform, and how they'd been adapted to specific situations and needs, but it was very interesting reading about that, and I discuss some of that further below.

The book is divided into seven chapters: Face Climbing, Crack Climbing, Rapelling, Sport Climbing, Adventure Climbing (this was one of the most interesting chapters), Training, and Self-Rescue.

Each outdoor sport has its own special vernacular and and special skills and techniques and rock climbing is no different. As I said, there's so much info here it would be hard to pick and choose a topic, but I did want to mention one thing I found interesting, which was the crack climbing and crack skills. The authors say you have to become "crack fluent" and must develop at least some competence in this since they point out that historical big walls and free routes invariably follow crack systems. To become a true "crack-master" requires patience, practice, and technique. Cracks vary greatly. Some cracks are so small that all you can do is use fingers jams. Other cracks are bigger and you can get your whole hand in the crack and use a hand or a fist jam, and several of those are discussed too.

Cracks are noted for requiring "an even combination of applied technique and physical enfurance." One of the special techniques for very narrow cracks is the "finger stack" and "butterfly jam." In the former you put your hand into the crack and stack the index. middle, and ring fingers against one another and vigorously twist downward. The butterfly jam involves placing the thumb into the crack and stacking the fingers against it. These are just a few of the dozens of special techniques that were discussed and that I learned about in this book. All of the different finger and hand jams and other techniques are fully illustrated so you can see exactly what's going on.

The authors also spend some time discussing the dangers of free-soloing and climbing in general. One author (C.L.) said he knows 14 climbers who had died in the last 6 years alone. This sobering statistic certainly points up the dangers of rock climbing, and yet the authors say that more and more people are being attracted into the sport. So as I said, while I doubt I'll ever try this myself, I found it interesting to read about and learn something about what's involved.

This is an excellent book on the subject which will be of use mainly to already experienced and skilled participants in this interesting and exciting but very risky sport.

3 out of 5 stars A little bit about a lot of topics.......2003-05-09

This book gives a little bit of information about a lot of different topics. Therefore, you may find a tidbit here or there that adds to your knowledge. However, because the book covers so many topics, the amount of in depth detail is very limited. For this reason, rather than getting this book, I would prefer to spend my money getting more specialized books on specific climbing topics rather than trying to get a little bit about everything from this book. If this is the only advanced climbing book you are going to buy and your experienced friends can fill in the blanks, then it would be a good introductory book for you.

                      5 out of 5 stars The book I recommend.......2002-11-15

I am a professional climber/guide with over 25 years of experience, and I am an owner of a climbing guide service in Moab Utah. While there are many good climbing "how to" books on the market, I heartily recommend this book to all of my friends and clients over all others.
The material covered in this book is both comprehensive and easy to understand. The authors both have extensive experience climbing and teaching climbing which gives the book a credibility lacking in many other "how to" books. Also the material in Advanced Rock Climbing is extremely current and gives many techniques and suggestions you will not find anywhere else.
If you are looking for a great climbing refference book this is the one to get!

4 out of 5 stars An ambitious work.......2007-10-10

This is a very ambitious work - the number of Indo-Pacific fish species illustrated is simply staggering, often showing regional variations and juvenile forms. On the other side, image quality and reproduction are often disappointing, and the minimal texts limit its scope somewhat. It will make an unbeatable identification and learning combo when paired with the equally interesting but infinitely better illustrated A Diver's Guide to Reef Life and A Diver's Guide to Underwater Malaysia Macrolife by Andrea and Antonella Ferrari - both featuring excellent written texts, exquisite color photographs and - in the case of the latter - hundreds of entries for cephalopods, crustaceans, nudibranchs and various other invertebrates. With these three field guides in your library almost no Indo-Pacific fish or critter will be able to escape identification!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for identification of my species in Pacific area.......2007-08-01

Easy to use and identify your photographs, particularly for an experienced diver used to identifying many types of fishes

5 out of 5 stars Excellent fish guide for the Pacific.......2007-07-12

I used this guide while diving in Western Pacific Islands and it was extremely helpful - species easy to pinpoint in the groupings provided and the excellent ID photos made correct species identification very easy. I will strive to buy all the rest of their publications.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reef guide for the Asian Pacific region........2006-08-01

This is an outstanding fish ID manual for the Pacific and Indian ocean region. It beats out others books of a similar nature with the number of photos (6 on every page for a total of over 2,500 pics) and the helpful identification notes below each pic along with the average size of the fish, localised habitat(if any)and pictures of the juvenile fish alongside the adult as well distinguishing feature between male and female forms and arrows pointing to distinguishing marks between similar fish of the same species. Fish are easily found from a photo you took or memory, as it places them into 20 identification groups according to body shape. The pictures are not quite the same quality as The Asia Pacific Reef Guide by Helmut Debelius but they are good enough. Unlike most books of this type it is fish specific so does not include any pics of molluscs, crustaceans, cephalopods, nudibranches, corals or other denizens of the ocean. You have to go to his Reef Creatures ID book for that in the excellent 3 volume Reef Set. Great book, highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best out there!.......2006-07-11

This book revolutionised fish ID in the tropical South Pacific when it first came out. We live and work in Fiji in the marine environment and have 4 of these on our shelf (for use of staff in the field as well as office)

The only drawback we find is the bizarre choice of common names. There are already a plethora of other books out there with common names fairly well established in Fiji by Lieske&Meyers. Seems to follow more of an Australian theme for these than the prevous Paul Humman books which use the American common names.

But overal a MUST for any diver who visits the Tropical Pacific. If you use it in conjunction with Lieske&Meyers then if you don;t find the fish you're looking at, prepare to be published!

This book is probably the most comprehensive guide to the wildlife on the reef's of Micronesia published yet. With beautiful full color pictures, you can easily identify almost every fish you see. This is a great book for anyone diving in Micronesia, and also helpful for identifying fish in other tropical areas of the world. This book made it on my "must buy" list, and it should be on yours.

This is a wonderful book for anyone planning to dive Micronesia. Exhaustively illustrated with photos (mostly of the fish in their habitat), and supplemented with introductions to the various island and underwater ecosystems you're likely to encounter in your travels. It was my after-dive bible for four years. If it is re-issued, the hard cover is worth the extra $, as the paperback falls apart after minimal use.

                        Book Description

The Prodigal is a journey through physical and mental landscapes, from Greenwich Village to the Alps, Pescara to Milan, Germany to Cartagena. But always in "the music of memory, water," abides St. Lucia, the author's birthplace, and the living sea. In his new work, Derek Walcott has created a sweeping yet intimate epic of an exhausted Europe studded with church spires and mountains, train stations and statuary, where the New World is an idea, a "wavering map," and where History subsumes the natural history of his "unimportantly beautiful" island home. Here, the wanderer fears that he has been tainted by his exile, that his life has become untranslatable, and that his craft itself is rooted in betrayal of the vivid archipelago to which, like Antaeus, he must return for the very sustenance of life.

In the "Prodigal", the noble poet luareate, Walcott proves again
he is a man of humble proportion with grand perspective. This landscape of memory lives in poignant hues. His flock of commas soar across stanzas of history. In the color nuiance, he bares his painted soul, so we may grow.

I had the pleasure of reading Mr. Rector's book in college several years ago. I can honestly say that his poetry touched me deeply and inspired me. Mr. Rector's poetry allows the reader a reminder of the proverbial American dream- both the triumphs and the tragedies. His work is a pleasure to read.
