Book Description
The Self-Organizing Map (SOM), with its variants, is the most popular artificial neural network algorithm in the unsupervised learning category. Many fields of science have adopted the SOM as a standard analytical tool: in statistics, signal processing, control theory, financial analyses, experimental physics, chemistry and medicine. A new area is organization of very large document collections. The SOM is also one of the most realistic models of the biological brain functions.
This new edition includes a survey of over 2000 contemporary studies to cover the newest results; the case examples were provided with detailed formulae, illustrations and tables; a new chapter on software tools for SOM was written, other chapters were extended or reorganized.
Customer Reviews:
I love this book........2000-03-11
This is a wonderfully written, and excellent book. It assumes only minimal background knowledge but imparts a great deal of insight. I love the way that the author describes this area and the connections with deep and beautiful mathematics.
A very nice 'handbook' of sorts for users of SOMs........1999-08-05
The material is presented clearly and comprehensively from the unique perspective of the SOM originator himself. The inclusion of exhaustive references is particularly useful for the prospective researcher, but, at the risk of sounding ungrateful, I'm curious as to why paper titles were not included in the citations? Overall though, a very good reference.

Customer Reviews:
Good.......2007-09-03
This is a very comprehensive textbook, however, I will not recommend it to readers that only has an interest in the subject. Some of the content is highly mathematical, and as such meant for serious students in this field. The book covers a very wide range of subjects in this field.
Very comprehensive introduction to the field.......2006-05-31
This text is the best introductory book available, it is comprehensive and will serve the reader as a reference throughout his/her career. The authors have made a significant contribution to the field with this text and will help many biomedical engineering programs and their students.
Errors make it hard to learn.......2002-12-13
I've used this book now in 2 classes (including one taught by an author of one of the chapters) and have both times found the book hard to use. It is full of so many small errors you can never be sure whether the problems you are having are because you don't understand the material, or if there is another mistake in that section. Very frustrating. The problems are not limited to explicit errors either, there are issues with the presentation that makes me think it was poorly edited as well. Style, order, and omission of important points are among the sins. Some sections are pretty good, though.
The book is a good value for a textbook, however (it's huge!), and provides lots of useful information on a wide variety of BME-related topics. Just make sure you have someone to help you spot the mistakes.
review of biomedical engineering handbook.......2001-12-18
subjects are old and out of date. For example, modeling of the eye, (...). This books seems like an attempt to introduce you to the research of a few professors who are trying to recruit graduate students. I found little educational value in it.
Very good introductory book!.......2001-07-04
This text offers a lot of good information. This book provides an excellent overview to the field and is easy to read. I am a junior and an engineering student at Iowa State. This book has helped me understand how many different aspects there are within BME to specialize with in my degree and also elaborate on engineering fundamentals. I highly recommend it!
Book Description
Bipolar disorder manifests itself in a variety of forms. It can coexist with other psychiatric conditions, and treatment efficacy can depend on the type of bipolar state. This book covers the full range of atypical, rapid cycling and transient forms of bipolar disorder, from atypical and agitated depression to schizoaffective mixed states. The most recent ICD category is covered, and the authors also look at the biology and genetics of bipolar disorder, along with issues relating to age (children and the elderly), comorbidity, choice of drug treatment and investigational strategies.
Book Description
Protein Physics is a lively presentation of the most general problems of protein structure, folding and function from the physics and chemistry perspective, based on lectures given by the authors. It deals with fibrous, membrane and, most of all, with the best studied water-soluble globular proteins, in both their native and denatured states. The major aspects of protein physics are covered systematically, physico-chemical properties of polypeptide chains; their secondary structures; tertiary structures of proteins and their classification; conformational transitions in protein molecules and their folding; intermediates of protein folding; folding nuclei; physical backgrounds of coding the protein structures by their amino acid sequences and protein functions in relation to the protein structure. The book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate level students and researchers of biophysics, biochemistry, biology and material science.
* Designed for a wide audience of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as being a reference for researchers in academia and industry
* Covers the most general problems of protein structure, folding, and function and introduces the key concepts and theories
* Deals with fibrous, membrane and especially water-soluble globular proteins, in both their native and denatured states
* Summarizes and presents in a systematic form the results of several decades of world wide fundamental research on protein physics, structure and folding
* Examines experimental data on protein structure in the post-genome era
Customer Reviews:
Unique.......2007-10-13
I know of no other book that explains the physics behind protein structure in such a clear and accessible way. The illustrations are simply fantastic, and the book is written in a very lively way. Highly recommended. It would be the ideal text book for students in structural bioinformatics or biophysics, but it's a pity that it is so expensive.
The true science from the true scientists.......2007-07-05
A clearly, yet thoroughly physical point of view constitutes the framework of this book. Written by pioneers in the field of protein physics, the book amazingly guides the readers to "think" of protein and raises fundamental questions in the field of soft-condensed matter physics. A must for everyone who wants to have a correct and scientific vision of proteins.
Great book!.......2005-12-13
This is a magnificent book, remarkable for its breadth, depth, and accessibility.
Elegant discussions of background material including topics in quantum chemistry
and thermodynamics render this book a self-contained tutorial on the many-faceted problems of
protein physics. Because of its structure as a series of increasingly sophisticated lectures, it should be accessible to a wide variety of audiences with diverse backgrounds.
To top it off, the text is beautifully written, at points nearly poetic including even a Greek chorus, a pleasure to read and to study. I am reminded of a few other great lecture series in science where razor-sharp intellects explain complicated phenomena from soup to nuts with wisdom and wit.
Anyone from professional scientist to motivated novice in almost any analytic discipline should find this a valuable introduction and detailed study of protein physics.

Ptitsyn's 'Protein Physics': a book of worth........2002-11-10
A book of worth from the legendary institution, PhysTech (Moscow). Ptitsyn's 'Protein Physics' is a valuable source of information on folding thermodynamics and kinetics both to beginners and professionals in this (and related) fields. No more words. Strongly recommended!
By far the best book on this subject.......2002-10-08
Excellent book for both beginners and experts. I will recommend it to students as a source of initial knowledge not only on proteins, but also on biopolymers and biophysics in general. For instance, presentation of forces is superb. I am also positive that every expert will find new non trivial insights on great many subtle points of this difficult topic.

Book Description
The Body Electric tells the fascinating story of our bioelectric selves. Robert O. Becker, a pioneer in the filed of regeneration and its relationship to electrical currents in living things, challenges the established mechanistic understanding of the body. He found clues to the healing process in the long-discarded theory that electricity is vital to life. But as exciting as Becker's discoveries are, pointing to the day when human limbs, spinal cords, and organs may be regenerated after they have been damaged, equally fascinating is the story of Becker's struggle to do such original work. The Body Electric explores new pathways in our understanding of evolution, acupuncture, psychic phenomena, and healing.
Customer Reviews:
The Body Electric.......2007-09-12
The information was not what I expected in regard to a misleading title. Anyone in the acupuncture field, as I am, should not be persuaded to buy this book. It basically deals with reptilian experiments done 50 or more years ago. It is a biology book, in a sense. I wish I had not purchased it!
Ohh my... This has to be one of the most interesting books I've ever read!.......2007-08-18
Honestly, if I could give this book 10 stars, I would.
I was worried this would be some hippy-dippy, new age ride, based on some of the chapter headings. But concealed behind the facade of odd chapter headings is a truly amazing scientific work. I'm blown away. Becker & Selden go into excruciatingly beautiful detail of any number of experiments exposing some of the electrical plumbing and electrical signaling going on in complex bodies. This includes bone regeneration through electrical currents, partial or complete limb regeneration in Rats and salamanders through electrical processes. It refers to known cases of young children (under 11 y/o) regrowing fingertips that have been severed in accidents and NOT been operated on, or had skin grafts that inhibit the regenerative process. They also go into the removal of bacterial infections with positive silver electrodes approximating the body's natural healing electrical currents. (I think I now know why colloidal silver is popular as an anti-infections agent and silver nitrate {I think?} is used when babies are born to ward off infection...)
This book is written with the lay reader in mind. You don't need a medical background to understand and be enraptured by this book. As I may have said already (or not), I can't put it down. It's THAT GOOD! I hope this stuff is taught in medical school and more research goes into this field. I have the feeling it holds the key to higher level human regeneration and life extension (through making use of and maintaining the body's existing electrical systems)...
Just... WOW!
Ahead of his time..........2007-02-05
I'm not really one for science books, but this book has got to be the exception. If you have any chronic or 'incurable' disease, try to hold on - because fortunately there are at least a few doctors and researchers out there who are bright enough to think outside the box and challenge existing theories regarding the workings of the human body - in particular, the electricity of the human body and how it coincides with the universe.
The author walks the reader through his discoveries that not only is it feasible for the human body to regenerate (just like the salamander's), but most likely, this is what our bodies were designed to do from the get-go, until we surrounded ourselves with electromagnetic fields of pollution so powerful that our perfectly designed DNA, immune systems, cardiovascular systems, endocrine systems, neuromuscular systems became 'confused' by all the external commotion.
The author of this book represents what research 'should be' about, but for the most part isn't, and the reader cannot help but become a part of this researcher's emotion.
If I ever have a chance to meet the author of this book, I will be honored. Until then, I will recommend this book to anyone who values the perfectly amazing life God gave them and the perfectly synchronized universe He created to sustain that life. I only pray that there are more reseachers out there bravely willing to poke holes in the current theories that the human body is merely a collection of chemical reactions, unopposed by a higher force.
The author touches on this, and I am in agreement - I have to wonder if perhaps all the bad we see around us today - broken marriages, suicides, bombings, disease, pain, suffering, greed - is this merely a by-product of all the manmade electromagnetic distress surrounding each and every one of us on a daily basis? After reading this book, you will think twice about what we've sacrificed for the sake of 'technology' - everlasting life on earth.
Very interesting!.......2007-01-10
If you are pretty well versed in physiology and basic biology, you will probably love this book! As an engineer and experimental scientist Dr. Becker opened my eyes to a whole new area of study which, politics aside, has the potential to change almost every person's life.
It is the best non-fiction book I have ever read.......2006-08-12
The first half the book held my attention like when I read a Clive Cussler adventure.
Dr. Becker patiently explains both biology and electricity building up to providing the understanding of regeneration as his research progressed.
The next half of the book explains first how electromagentism affects humans, then the potential hazards of electromagnetism are addressed.
Overall this book is very well written and I recommend it to all my friends whether they are engineers like me or not.
Book Description
Psychoacoustics â Facts and Models offers a unique, comprehensive summary of information describing the processing of sound by the human hearing system. It includes quantitative relations between sound stimuli and auditory perception in terms of hearing sensations, for which quantitative models are given, as well as an unequalled collection of data on the human hearing system as a receiver of acoustic information. In addition, many examples of the practical application of the results of basic research in fields such as noise control, audiology, or sound quality engineering are detailed. The third edition includes an additional chapter on audio-visual interactions and applications, plus more on applications throughout. Acoustic demonstrations on a CD included with this edition further illustrate and amplify basic and applied psychoacoustic phenomena. Reviews of previous editions have characterized it as "an essential source of psychoacoustic knowledge," "a major landmark ," and a book that "without doubt will have a long-lasting effect on the standing and future evolution of this scientific domain."
Customer Reviews:
Essential for NVH.......2002-06-21
Even though it may not have been his direct intent, the (mostly) empirical information presented in Zwicker's book is essential for understanding how to integrate a customers perception of sound into the design of a consumer product (such as a washing machine or an automobile, for instance). If you are interested in the engineering field of noise and vibration, or wish to make a career out of designing for noise and vibration, this book is a MUST HAVE as a professional reference. Highly, highly recommended.
Be Ready to Get Hammered With Information.......2001-12-04
Zwicker is a major name in Psychoacoustics. He references his own publications in the field well over 100 times in this book. This book is probably the most comprehensive collection of psychoacoustical information I have seen to date. As with all works, it starts with a description of sound and the human audiotory system, and then moves into how the two entities interact and how perception is modeled by this. The discussion is very technical, and he has an average of one graph per page. I do not recommend this book to anyone not interested in the details of how psychoacoustics evolve.
It is also nice that he includes a methods section, as one would do in a technical journal. This describes how the data that he is presenting was obtained, and adds a load of credibilty to the work. Also most of the data presented is empirical, from experiments themselves. The amount of research underlying this work is huge.
My one complaint is the pace varies a bit, but not too bad. Some parts seem fast, others seem slow. Overall however, this is a great book for technical readers. I personally found this book tremendously useful.
Ever wanted to understand human hearing?.......2000-05-21
Eberhard Zwicker was one of the great names in psychoacoustics. This book, written with his student Hugo Fastl, is an excellent introduction to psychoacoustics, and presents a modern account with a great deal of qualitative and quantitative information. The second edition has been updated by Fastl.
I would have liked to see more discussion of the relationships with the psychology of music, but there are now several good books available on this subject, especially a collection of essays edited by Diana Deutsch and another edited by Perry Cook.

Book Description
With Biomechanics: Motion, Flow, Stress, and Growth, the premier bioengineering scientist Y.C. Fung concludes a discussion first introduced in his seminal work, Biomechanics: Mechanical Properties of Living Tissues, and further articulated in Biomechanics: Circulation. This third volume not only stands alone as a comprehensive survey of the broad field of biomechanics, but also complements the explorations of the first two volumes, maintaining its emphasis on methods of classical engineering as applied to biological and physiological phenomena. While consistently recognizing the importance of historical precedence and perspective, Fung presents the most contemporary literature and the latest thinking in biomechanics in thei increasingly complex interdisciplinary subject. Considered here are 1.) the mechanics of body movement; 2.) the flow external to an animal in motion, and the internal flow of blood, gas, water, and other body fluids; 3.) the stress and strain, and the strength, trauma, and tolerance limits of tissues and organs; and 4.) the growth and change in living organisms in response to biomechanical principles. A generous number of problems to be solved and a carefully selected list of references are especially useful and should help to stimulate thought and discussion among advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and others with an interest in bioengineering and medicine.
Customer Reviews:
The Bible.......2007-02-10
Professor Fung is considered the father of bioengineering and founder of biomechanics.
Winner of Timoshenko and Poiseulle medals he's an Engineer that started to study physiology when his mother was diagnosed with glaucoma in 1957.
I am trained as a Medical Doctor and Molecular Biologist but being the son of a Professor of Civil Engineering made me understand the importance that structural engineering has in Medicine and Biology.
Now I am interested in nuclear matrix and lamins(as they are connected to aging phenomena) so I am training myself in Biomechanics, and I found that this book is the strating point.
I recommend this book to all Structural Engineers,Biomedical Engineers, MDs and Cellular and Molecular Biologists that want to understand this field.
A Masterpiece in Biomechanics!.......2002-12-02
What I would say is not a comprehensive review of what the great book talks, but just telling you a truth: if you have engineering and mathamatics background and wanna combine your background to do research in physiology, Fung's book is absolutely a must-buy. This book is profound, but it is actually rooted in nearly all fields of biomechanics research.
It is a conclusion for biomechanics research till 1980's; also this book is a truly great reference for all current researchers who are interested in biomedical research in point of view of a mathamatician and engineer.
Simply the Best.......2000-06-16
Fung takes a continuum mechanics approach to the principles that underly the human body. All of the ideas in the text are backed up with solid research and easy to understand equations, as well as text descriptions. Fung is also responsible for researching many of the ideas of biomechanics, and so, the text takes on a personal view not found in other books. All in all, the best book out there for introductory biomechanics, but one that you will use for the rest of your life.
Book Description
Focusing on the wealth of information emerging in the area of energy medicine, this unique resource explores mechanisms by which mind and body processes influence the body's healing and performance potential. Content draws on an extraordinary range of sources to explore theories of human energy from physiology and biophysics, to examples drawn from the realms of "spontaneous healing," cutting-edge athletic and artistic performance, the martial arts, and various contemplative and spiritual practices. Providing new insights and theoretical models, it offers ways to apply these concepts directly, practically, and clinically.

Wonderful, enlightening.......2007-04-02
So much fascinating information about the human bio electrical system, and how even the tiniest current of electricity can effect it. I couldn't stop reading it. Every chapter opened my eyes wider to the possibilities for creating health even with the amount of current contained in the impulse of a faint thought or intention.
I wish the print were a bit larger and the pages not so shiny, because it made it harder to read. Otherwise a very great book!
A little disappointing.......2005-10-19
Anyone reading the title of this book might justifiably assume it was going to deal with the type of energy manifested in Qi Gong, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), acupuncture, Quantum-Touch and many other energy therapies - subtle energy it is often called.
The author does not want to deal with this type of energy, and admits as much, though he is careful to say he does not deny its existence. His book is devoted mainly to electromagnetic phenomena, of which there are plenty, of course, but this is not the healing energy as I understand and use it.
I have to give it four stars as it is very thorough in its limited scope; otherwise I would only have given it three precisely because it does not deal with what I see as the primary healing energy, but only with what I regard as secondary phenomena.
It's an expensive book and I am sorry I bought it, it may be useful to some, but not to me.
A Mind-Boggling New Scientific Understanding.......2004-03-02
James Oschman has done it, he's presenting us with the rare gift of a breakthrough understanding of the human condition that includes a profound new theory of the mechanisms of life, one with critically important clinical implications. In prose that reads like a good adventure story he presents with great clarity, comprehensiveness, and extensive endnotes a mind-boggling story from the frontiers of biophysics. Reading merely the introduction to this immensely important book will open your mind to a radically different paradigm of human functioning, one that is laying the foundation for more fully understanding all kinds of phenomena of living processes that heretofore have remained insoluble mysteries.
He discusses the nature of scientific revolution and how once shunned and ignored ideas move into the mainstream of orthodoxy only to be replaced in turn. It is time for some of the most fundamental assumptions of medical and life sciences to be examined, time for these new ideas to be tested.
Dr. Oschman cites voluminous evidence from scientific journals demonstrating that along with the communication systems we are most familiar with, the nervous and endocrine systems, there are other communication and regulatory systems that can only be understood when we look deeper into ourselves than the realms of organs and cells and even molecules with all of their complex iterations and interactions. We must go into the quantum realm of subatomic particles if we would understand the nature of life.
Biophysicists have been doing this in their labs and specialized journals but their discoveries have had little effect outside their field. What Jim has so ably accomplished that no one else has done and which is so vitally important is to carefully scrutinize this burgeoning material with the eyes of a comprehensivist and synthesize it into a new paradigm that sheds light on so many mysteries from the everyday questions of how living organisms regulate disparate functions, generate energy, et cetera. In doing so a number of fascinating questions arise in the mind of the scientifically literate that scream for investigation. So many questions that have resisted our best minds' efforts at understanding appear now ready to be answered, and give rise to the next layer of questions.
Life functions cannot be understood so long as the investigation holds to the familiar realms. We now have the tools and with Jim's contribution the theoretical framework to carry our investigation of life and especially human life into the next domain of quantum realities. The practical results, if this work is given the resources it needs, will surely be immensely important. Questions about the extraordinary and well-documented events that sometimes occur in activities like sports, the martial arts, and various healing modalities can now be investigated rationally - and perhaps someday if we do the work these now rare and inexplicable phenomena will be harnessed and reliably produced for the well-being of us all.
The evidence for this "second" nervous system, one that functions much more rapidly, is near infinitely more complex, and magnitudes of order more sensitive than the nervous system we are so familiar with is conclusive. And this system has been right in front of our eyes and under our hands all along, we just didn't have scientific tools with sufficient sensitivity to perceive and investigate it until recently. I urge everyone interested in these vital issues to get this book and spread the word.
