Book Description
Bargain Books are non-returnable.
The Pacific Coast, with its hundreds of miles of unspoiled forests, cliffs, fields, and beaches from Mexico to British Columbia, attracts nature lovers from around the world. Naturalist Susan Tweit pays a very special homage to this diverse region in this handsome volume. Forty informative, evocative essays, each illustrated with a color drawing, capture the Coast's vibrant plant and animal life, from sea otters and monarch butterflies to giant bladder kelp and gray whales. Her subjects, both on and off-shore, also include octopus, sturgeon, abalone, redwoods, cobra lilies, and the eccentric sand dollar. The author begins with field notes and then offers delightful observations and commentary. Whether you are sitting in the sand or reading in your favorite armchair, this book is an inspiring companion to the natural world.

Seasons on the Pacific Coast.......2000-04-07
Seasons on the Pacific Coast takes the reader by the hand - with childlike delight - to show us the stunning natural diversity of this vibrant shoreline world. To me, a gentle tone and wealth of scientific information make Seasons a volume to savor for the casual visitor or native naturalist. Tweit presents short, engaging profiles of individual species which, taken together, tell the larger story of "connection that binds humans and wild lives everywhere". Rather than preaching conservation, she instead encourages us to look at Seasons as a "family album", renewing our sense of kinship with a whole coast of fascinating characters. I particularly love the exquisite watercolor illustrations that highlight each chapter. It's a lovely read.

Andrew Beyer shows the handicapper how to make his Beyer Speed Figures the focal point of a horse wagering strategy for pursuing spectacular profits. Intended for the serious horseplayer, Beyer on Speed explains how to relate speed figures to such factors as pace, track bias, and track conditions. It helps the bettor utilize the new opportunities for picking winners, such as video replays or a successfully structured pick-six ticket. Written in Beyerâs engaging, rapid-fire prose, Beyer on Speed reveals optimal use of the figures based on computer analysis of more than 10,000 races. This invaluable book on wagering is a classic of the sport and can be enjoyed by the novice as well as the advanced player.

Beyer on Speed New Strategies for Racetrack Betting.......2007-05-18
This is not a "NEW" Beyer book. It was orginally published in 1993. The only "NEW" is a six page preface. If you have the original Beyer on Speed, you don't need to purchase this one.
Buy Today, Read Tomorrow, Start Using The Next Day.......2007-01-08
Shhhh.....don't tell anyone, but I'll give you a tip based on some recent observations; the early speed at Tampa Bay Downs is holding up in a number of races. I recently joked with someone while watching simulcast racing at Thistledown that Tampa Bay is Keeneland south (that is, before the synthetic track that was recently installed has taken most of the speed bias out of that Kentucky track).
But how can a handicapper - from a casual fan to a serious player - get an understanding on what runners - especially the ones who may have decent odds - in certain races have the type of pace to hold up from gate-to-wire, with you cashing a nice ticket & others tossing their tickets away?
Andrew Beyer takes the reader through the blueprint of effectively using speed figures as an effective betting strategy. He introduces such topics as pace, track bias and track conditions into the equation and provides a highly-readable plan that a handicapper can immediately utilize.
Since the 1995 reprint, the greatest change in Thoroughbred racing in the U.S. has been the introduction of synthetic racing surfaces that are replacing dirt tracks. The book is still a great resource - coupled with this unique variable - if the reader follows the action at these "new" tracks.
There are numerous books available to assist the handicapper, but Beyer On Speed has held up over the years due to its practical application of an important angle that can get lost in the shuffle of handicapper's "overload" when trying to figure out how to wager on a race.
Beyer brings it together.......2006-01-07
While probably not the best handicapping book even from the Beyer set, this is one of the more entertaining handicapping books around. You should read his earlier stuff first to see how he evolved as a handicapper to incorporate some ideas such as pace, trip, and form cycles, where earlier he had largely dismissed those. Where I spent a lot of time taking notes from other handicapping books, I spent more time turning pages and just enjoying a good read here.
A safe bet........2005-10-27
A very well written book. Easy to read, entertaining and full of useful information, this book makes otherwise complex theories easy to follow. The use of anecdotes and real life examples allow for easier understanding of the ideas presented. This is a useful addition to the library of any horseracing fan. The serious student of horse racing handicapping should easily recover several times the price of the book from using the information presented - that is a safe bet.
Handicapping Classic.......2005-03-22
Andrew Beyer is the godfather of speed figures in thoroughbred racing. In preparing to bet the Kentucky Derby and other races this year I read Andrew Beyer's fantastic book "Beyer on Speed" and Joe Cardello's book "Speed to Spare". These two books fundamentally changed the way I handicap races. It is simply careless to handicap races without understanding Beyer Speed Ratings and use them to your advantage. This book explains the origins of the Beyer Speed figures and walks you through an understanding of how the speed figures are calculated and how they work. I used the information on "Beyer on Speed" and "Speed to Spare" this year (March, 2005) to hit a big trifecta at Santa Anita - without Beyer Speed ratings and the information they provide, I would have never made the bet I made.
Andrew Beyer is not only a great author, but he is at the forefront of making a day at the races enjoyable to all. "Beyer on Speed" is a book that will absolutely make your trip to the track more enjoyable than you can imagine. Beyer doesn't sugar-coat the various elements that make handicapping a less-than-perfect science, but he does help you understand the fundamentals in a very concise way.
I appreciate Andrew Beyer's commitment to racing/handicapping that is so evident in this book and in all his other writings. Andrew Beyer remains at the forefront of the war against doping in racing and other honesty/integrity issues. Andrew Beyer is one of the reasons that horse racing is such a great sport. This book is for anyone wanting to know how to quickly understand the joys and pitfalls of handicapping - and why thorougbred racing is so much fun.

The intelligent use of Beyer speed figures .......2007-08-27
This is a wonderful book for learning to intelligently use Beyer Speed Figures in your handicapping. Cardello gives a helpful background on the statistics of Beyer speed figures, especially his own statistics on Beyers calculated for turf races. Even more important, he provides example after example (from dirt, turf, sprint, and route races). Gradually you begin to understand how to apply Beyers and how they can improve your chances of winning. There is no 'formula' for using Beyers. He teaches you the 'art' of using Beyers through his examples. I read this quickly and it has already helped me. I plan to read it over and over again until his way of applying Beyers becomes second nature to me. Of course, I expect my understanding and application of these principles to be modified and improved with personal experience.
Excellent work on cycles.......2006-01-07
Of the DRF peperback series on the elements of handicapping, this is clearly the best work. Cardello really gets in depth on how to weed out value in form cycles by using the Beyer figures. His real life example of how to find "hidden" lines in the past performances are explained in a way that most anyone can understand how he approaches the neverending quest for winners. Clearly he is an expert in handicapping and not just a fan writing a book to fill space on the shelf. Strongly recommended for novices looking to inject a little value by using readily available information in the form, as well as, more experienced handicappers who may be missing out on more opportunities to cash in.
Great Handicapping Book.......2005-03-22
In preparing to bet the Kentucky Derby and other races this year I read Andrew Beyer's fantastic book "Beyer on Speed" and this book. These books go together like ham and eggs. After devouring the information in Speed to Spare I, like any eager handicapper, was looking forward to applying some of the tips in this book. One way this book made me think "different" is how it helps you spot the potential favorite that may be ripe for a fall which can result in a big pay-off. I went to a track in Michigan that was simulcasting races at Santa Anita (in March, 2005) and WHAM! - I hit a trifecta using the information found in this wonderful book; for the first time in my life found myself at the IRS window with a payoff of over $3,000.00! The presentation of information in this book is easy-to-follow and the actual examples really help the "part-time" handicapper that only spends a limited amount of time at a racetrack each year. I salute Joe Cardello's book and urge anyone interested in using Beyer figures to enhance their trip to the track to buy and read this book. You will not be disappointed.
Wonderful........2004-11-12
Joe Cardello, Speed to Spare (DRF Press, 200?)
Speed to Spare is not a book you read; it is a book you devour. Horseplayers who use the Beyer Speed Figures published in the Daily Racing Form who do not yet own a copy of this book, pick it up immediately (after all, it costs only eight win bets after tax). Read it. When you're done, read it again. Follow along, both in the book's examples and in random races you pick from your Racing Form. You will learn more about speed figure handicapping in an afternoon than you have learned since DRF started publishing the Beyer Speed Figures. Guaranteed.
This is a must-read for horseplayers, from the professional bettor to the casual fan. **** ½
Greatest thing since Woodward and Bernstein.......2004-05-11
Andrew Beyer must be the best thing to come out of the Washington Post since Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein....hey, who says politics and horse racing aren't analogous??
Seriously though, Cardello has done a superb job of taking the figs and giving Joe (or Jane) Horseplayer what he desparately needs in 21st Century wagering...a concise guide in how to cull the figures in the PP's, establish a pattern, and, perhaps most importantly, begin with eliminating the losers.
OK, OK, I know, easier said than done. But this book should definitely be on every handicapper's reading list. Well, only those who wish to take more currency from the mutuel windows than they push through them.

Making the Perfect Pitch.......2007-02-22
I saw Katharine Sands speak at UCLA. She was AMAZING, and her book is absolutely what I needed. I've just finished my first novel and am mustering the courage to submit it to agents. Now I think I can finally do it, thanks to the valuable tips in her book!
Gives you the ammunition you need.......2006-12-04
Katharine Sands, a successful literary agent with the Sara Jane Freymann Agency in New York, corrals 40 top agents and experts from CAA, Trident Media, Meredith G. Bernstein, Jane Dystel Literary Management, and more and gets them to tell what really excites them about pitches, query letters and proposals. "Making The Perfect Pitch" is well organized and the approach is unique. While it's informative to have the expertise of one agent it's invaluable to have the opinion of a number of different agents'. Ms. Sands brings a breadth of knowledge and experience to writers they desperately need and seldom receive. If you're hunting for an agent, you need to know how to pitch and "Making The Perfect Pitch" gives you the ammunition to be dead on target.

Pitching Is Key To Get Any Book Published.......2006-04-23
Agents are like editors with their own individual tastes for books to champion. Is the agent lured to your project or do they reject it? Often it will depend on the pitch. Literary agent Sands writes, "You can hire a caterer, a hit man, or a dominatrix. But you can't hire an agent. Literary agents must be enchanted, seduced, and won over to take you on as a client. They must want to devote their efforts to working on your behalf."
The beauty of this title is the different voices from forty top agents. Each chapter reveals some insight into what attracts a particular agent to a particular idea. I used my yellow highlighter often with this book because of great inspirational common sense advice. Here's an example from Sands chapter on Practicing Pitchcraft, "Writing is solitary; publishing is collaborative. The key point to understand: you want to get others excited about what is exciting to you."
A call to excellence in your craft is built into the fiber of this book and repeated often. As literary agent Joseph Regal wrote in his chapter on The Providential Diamond, "No agent is waiting for something that's 'almost' there; none of us are hoping a talented newcomer will send ragged, unfocused writing, no matter how promising. If your instinct is that another pass would make it better, make that pass. And do it again, until you are certain that you have reached a point where there isn't a single thing more you could think of that would make the book better."
Any writer or would-be writer can profit from the wisdom for pitching crammed into these pages.
Possibly the best book on the subject.......2006-03-25
I've read many books intended to help writers get published, but this is possibly the best book I've seen on getting an agent to notice your work. Katharine Sands, an agent herself, has given us a reference that is a must for your writing library.
We've all seen single-source guides on pitching your book, but Sands goes one further by collecting the wisdom of some of the top agents in the publishing business:
* Sarah Jane Freymann relates seven essentials needed in a query letter.
* Robert Gottlieb tells how to stay ahead of publishing trends.
* Michael Larsen give tips on establishing a marketing niche that will appeal to publishers and agents.
* Laurie Horowitz shows how agents can turn books into films.
* Andrew Stuart gives insider tips on paring back queries to their bare essence, packing the most punch on a page.
* Jane Dystel advises the best way to stand out from the rest of the slush pile.
* Donald Maass discusses stand-out settings, memorable protagonists and intractable problems that every novel needs to be breakout-worthy.
There are forty chapters of advice from the best in the business. And while some of it will, by nature, overlap, the info here is invaluable. It's a panel discussion in a convenient book form so beginning writers can refer to it again and again.
If you're considering writing for publication, this book is peerless. Highly recommended.
Sands hits it out of the park.......2005-10-26
Tons of wonderfully helpful guidance on how to sell yourself that has application way beyond how to hook a literary agent. Many many succinct and handsomely presented examples of pitching, all as related by a slough of experts who are on the receiving end of bushels of pitches. To be savored and digested in small doses and worth returning to over and over for renewed inspiration.
Book Description
In this book Judith Okely challenges popular accounts of Gypsies which suggest that they were once isolated communities, enjoying an autonomous culture and economy now largely eroded by the processes of industrialisation and western capitalism. Dr Okely draws on her own extensive fieldwork and on contemporary documents. The Traveller-Gypsies is the first monograph to be published on Gypsies in Britain using the perspective of social anthropology. It examines the historical origins of the Gypsies, their economy, travelling patterns, self-ascription, kinship and political groupings, and their marriage choices, upbringing and gender divisions. A detailed analysis of pollution beliefs reveals an underlying system which expresses and reinforces the separation of Gypsies from non-Gypsies. Explanations for beliefs are sought in their contemporary meaning as opposed to their alleged Indian origin. None of these aspects are analysed independently of the wider society, its policies, beliefs, and practices. This book will be invaluable for teaching purposes, both as a study of a Gypsy community per se, and for its discussion of the problems involved in carrying out fieldwork within the anthropologist’s own society. It will also interest the general reader and the academic specialist; social anthropologists, sociologists, historians, geographers, planners and all those concerned with minority groups.
