I would like to say "Polly The Mosquito" is a great book for the family.
I believe this book to be for all ages. While learning her habitat she teaches morales and self-discipline. This sweet, lovely, adorable, red
head ventures out on her first journey with the colony. It's amazing
she being the youngest and somehow the smartest. I urge anyone with
children to make this little character part of their book collection.
Hats off to "Polly The Mosquito" Thanks Veronica Lake for writing such
an interesting story about mosquitos. Thanks to Scott Merril for creating
such a cute character.

Don't waste your time on this book, even for 1st timers this stuff is old and out of date. Get Jeff Galloway's Marathon instead.

3 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2006-02-08

This is a good option if you are plannig to run your firs marathon. I follow it on my trainnig for New York marathon wich I spent 4 hours 6 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for marathoners!.......2005-04-07

This was the only book i had for my first marathon. i read it at least 20 times. i found her down to earth attitude refreashing. hey, anyone who encourages you to eat pizza is fabulous. the most helpful part for me was the lengthy sections on h ow to prepare for the marathon, a week before, a day before, day of, etc. not only was it my frist marathon, it was my first race (not smart). I felt very prepared and have recommended this book to many many people.

1 out of 5 stars Platitudinous & Insipid.......2004-02-08

Laughably weak effort -- the "running book" equivalent of a 9 hr marathon. The advice is incredibly banal. I bought it used for the postage plus 1 cent and still felt cheated. Unreal that this kind of junk gets published!

4 out of 5 stars Basics for the beginning marathoner.......2003-09-01

I'm going to be running my first marathon in June 2004, and this was a great book for acquainting me with the marathon. I especially enjoyed that the first chapter included testimonials from various ordinary people about their first marathon.

Also there is a countdown chapter, telling you what to do in the month, weeks, days, and last day before the marathon; as well as a whole chapter dedicated to the race itself. I found this very helpful because though I have run shorter races the marathon was kind of a mystery to me.

However, I picked up this book expecting to get a little more information in certain areas:

1) Stretching. The author mentions stretching, when to do it, and why it is important, but no advice on technique (pictures or diagrams and/or simple descriptions would have been helpful).

2) Female concerns. A whole chapter is devoted to "Concerns of Female Marathoners" but no mention is ever made of sport bras, and periods are only talked about in conjunction with the concern of missing or ceasing to have them altogether - nothing about running while on your period, etc.

Finally, I found that some of the nutrition information was a little outdated (the book is, after all, ten years old). The author recommends combining foods to get complete proteins, which is an obsolete theory. Vegetarianism is only mentioned once: "Getting complete proteins is a special concern of those vegetarians who do not eat eggs, milk, or dairy products." This has been disproved. The author does not even allude to the scores of elite vegetarian/vegan athletes succeeding in a variety of sports today.

I would recommend this book to a beginning marathoner, if you can get a bargain price, but check out some newer books on the subject.

Have a great marathon!

Book Description

Jim Corbett was every inch a hero, something like a "sahib" Davy Crockett: expert in the ways of the jungle, fearless in the pursuit of man-eating big cats, and above all a crack shot. Brought up on a hill-station in north-west India, he killed his first leopard before he was nine and went
on to achieve a legendary reputation as a hunter.
Corbett was also an author of great renown. His books on the man-eating tigers he once tracked are not only established classics, but have by themselves created almost a separate literary genre. Man Eaters of Kumaon is the best known of Corbett's books, one which offers ten fascinating and
spine-tingling tales of pursuing and shooting tigers in the Indian Himalayas during the early years of this century. The stories also offer first-hand information about the exotic flora, fauna, and village life in this obscure and treacherous region of India, making it as interesting a travelogue
as it is a compelling look at a bygone era of big-game hunting.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2007-08-31

This book was written by not only a very brave man but a man that possessed great character and class. His only reason for hunting these Man-Eaters was to rescue the villagers from this ever present terror. He took no money for his efforts. Very exciting reading without ever a hint of bragging about his extraordinary gift of successfully hunting the most dangerous animals on earth.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing read.......2007-08-03

I can't speak highly enough about the book. His discription of his journeys made you feel as if you with right there with he and his men. If you like the outdoors and adventure, you simply must read this classic.

5 out of 5 stars Bone chilling details. Amazing adventures........2007-05-07

Jim Corbett put together his experiences in the forests of the Himalayan foothills. The details are truly amazing. It does also provide a great ammount of details about wildlife. In a nutshell an epic collection. Does not get any better than this.

5 out of 5 stars A hunter, a humanitarian, a lover of nature.......2006-03-08

A lot of tigers and leopards die in this book. If you belong to PETA, then, this isn't the book for you. Jim Corbett begins with the premise that tigers and leopards who kill humans must be killed.

But he then begins his exposition with the story of the Champawat man-eating tigress, and how he first undertook to hunt such a beast. As I followed him into the jungle, I couldn't help but marvel at his recounting of his fear, his missteps, his eventual triumph.

But what I loved most of all was his keen eye for detail. Corbett isn't satisfied to say, "I shot the man-eater;" he must explain why that tiger's old paw injury forced her to substitute humans for her natural prey. And as you go on in the book, you begin to sense that Corbett is not a hunter who kills to bolster an inadequate ego; rather, his great joy springs from his natural affinity and long years of association with tigers, leopards, and the other denizens of the jungle.

It's probably worth knowing that in his later years, as the wilds of India became overrun with people, he turned to photo safaris; he wished to share his experiences of viewing these animals in their native habitat with the entire world, without doing any harm. If you, then, can sympathize with such a perspective, I wholly recommend this book; you'll come away with a new fascination with the great creatures we share our planet with.

5 out of 5 stars Man eaters of Kumaon review.......2006-03-01

Man eaters of Kumaon is a fantastic book about hunting Royal Bengal tigers in the Indian Himilaya. The author describes his thrilling hunts with great descriptive passages and when he hunts, he does so with great care and passion. In fact he shot the Pipil Pani tiger because he was eating sheep, goats, and other small domestic animals. He shot the Bachelor of Powlghar because he had attacked one of his freinds. The bachelor of Powlghar was recorded as being one of the largest Bengal tigers ever, he was ten foot seven inches over curves!
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the great outdoor and and likes tigers.

Book Description

The last of Colonel Jim Corbett's books on his unique and enthralling hunting experiences in India, this volume concludes the narrative of his adventures with tigers begun in the famous Man-Eaters of Kumaon. These stories maintain, perhaps even supercede, the high standard of the
earlier classic collection. Corbett saves his best story of all for the long concluding chapter in this volume, describing, in The Talla Des Man-Eater, how he embarked on what he feared might be a fatal last test of skill and endurance. As always, he writes with an acute awareness of all jungle
sights and sounds, choosing words charged with a great love of humanity, birds, and animals. His calm and straightforward modesty heightens the excitement and suspense of these experiences, in which he continuously risks his life to free the Indian tarai of dangerous man-eaters.

In a few words Jim Corbett can transport you back 60-100 years & make you feel like you are right there beside him tracking a Tiger in India. There is no bravado, he comes across as very humble. I had read his "Man-Eaters of Kumaon" several years ago & thought it was without a doubt one of the best books I had ever read. Even knowing how good his books were I was still highly impressed with this book as well. It isn't just the tigers he describes but the whole Indian country-side & the people & animals that habitat the place. He takes you there. Don't hesitate to read one of his books.

5 out of 5 stars Words cant describe my respect for this man.......2004-03-19

Once again in this book Jim Corbett has proved it, he was a awesome incredible gentleman. I have never seen anyone who could write like him. Amazing man with amazing courage. His modesty is revealed throughout his book. He goes through so much suffering and pain, but never once writes about it. From his book you can feel how much concern he had for people. People trusted him with with their lives. His book teaches us a lot about jungles. I would recommend this to anyone who likes animals. Once again Jim Corbett you were and still are the best writes of adventures.

5 out of 5 stars You must read this book!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-08-22

Known locally in India as "Carpet Sahib", a mispronunciation of his name, Colonel Jim Corbett was called upon time and time again to rid the hills of Kumaon of man eating Tigers and Leopards. This book is one of his many spine thrilling depictions of his hunting adventures with maneaters in India. I've read this and his other books many times..and I still read them when I have time....

I recommend this book without any reservations....and his other books...also... If you find maneater stories interesting...I recommend you read the books of Kenneth Anderson..which are as good as Jim Corbett's if not better.....

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Corbett.......2001-08-24

Jim Corbett once again takes us back to the rural Indian mountainsides in search of man-eating tigers. In this installment, he serves up a fresh smorgasbord of human victims. His stories all carry the same theme. Remote villages are being torn to threads by big cats that have taken a liking to human flesh. He is the world-renowned hunter with nerves of steel that must come to the rescue.

Corbett has a particular style that just makes for good reading. He's not as suspenseful as someone like Capstick but still keeps the pages turning at a blur. I think his secret is that he is so in tune with his surroundings and his adversary. He is able to paint a picture of exactly what he is thinking; and better yet... what the big cats are thinking. He gives a completely objective view of the animals' behavior and reasons for killing rather than to make them out as some kind of evil hell-spawn. He also thoroughly explains the native people's superstitions regarding these cats and the obstacles he has to overcome just to help them in spite of themselves.

His books are the stuff of legends. They are best served over a glowing campfire and a MUST for hunters and adventure readers alike. A+

                  Book Description

This collection of essays on integral medicine, consciousness, and healing integrates mainstream medical knowledge with recent developments in the emerging areas of frontier sciences and insights from alternative healing perspectives. It promotes a model of healing in which personal relationships, emotions, meaning, and belief systems are viewed as fundamental points of connection between body, mind, spirit, society, and nature. Integral medicine embraces the recognition that human beings possess emotional, spiritual, and relational dimensions that are essential in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and the cultivation of wellness.

Readers learn from the leaders in the emerging field of integral medicine and consciousness research, from the most well known (Deepak Chopra), to the frontline policy makers (James Gordonone of the heads of the White House Commission on Conventional and Complementary and Alternative Medicine). Readers also gain insights from health professionals who have experienced healing within themselves and witnessed remarkable healing in their patients. We hear from other medical professionals (through the essays and the interviews on the accompanying DVD) who approach medicine from an array of cultural perspectives, and can attest to this multicultural, interdisciplinary, and participatory healing system in action. Consciousness and Healing contains 47 essays in the book plus 9 bonus essays read aloud on the DVD. Essays are short and in language suited to an audience of both lay and professional readers, with extensive references on the DVD to original scientific studies for those interested in further exploration.

4 out of 5 stars Marvelously rich sampler of writings .......2006-03-23

This book is a marvelously rich sampler of writings by clinicians and theorists in mind-body healing, some of them in original offerings, many as excerpts from previous articles.

An unusual feature of this book is its accompanying Video CD, in which several of the authors are featured in spoken presentations, which add to these authors' written presentations. That is the good news. The bad news is that this CD plays only on CD players attached to TV sets, not on computers (PC or Mac). All of the references from the articles in this book are on that CD - making them very difficult and frustrating to access. You would have to sit with the book in hand and search the CD on a TV set in order to identify any of the footnoted references or comments from the book you want to find. As a frequent reader of footnotes and references, I found this discouragingly unmanageable.

A few of the many chapters that this reviewer found interesting:

The essay by Candace B Pert, Henry E Dreher and Michael R. Ruff, "The Psychosomatic Network: Foundations of Mind-Body Medicine:"

The essay by Eskenazi, Loren. "Transformational Surgery: Symbol, Ritual, and Initiation in Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery:"

David Michael Levin's refreshing chapter, "Meaning and the history of the body: toward a postmodern medicine,"

Discussions on spiritual dimensions of health extend our awareness of this end of the wholistic spectrum. Dean Ornish, "Opening Your Heart: Anatomically, Emotionally, and Spiritually:"

This volume is a good introduction to mind-body interactions, particularly for anyone who is new to this field. Those with considerable experience are also likely to find much of interest and value in the rich variety of presentations. This would be a more useful reference book were the references for further readings actually usable.

5 out of 5 stars Raising Awareness of the Nature of Healing.......2005-06-02

CONSCIOUSNESS & HEALING is a remarkable collection of papers, articles and personal accounts of the current state of healing in the United States of America today. Sixty seven leading experts on health and healing share their most intimate, heartfelt, and analytical assessments of exactly what's going on in the field of mind-body medicine. Included inside this book is a companion DVD that features interviews with health professionals who share their vision for where the field of healing is headed.

CONSCIOUSNESS & HEALING is the brain and love child of the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS), whose goal is to explore the frontiers of human consciousness. While the breadth and depth of this book defies description, it's safe to say that CONSCIOUSNESS & HEALING is currently the most comprehensive and up-to-date reference book on the subjects of complementary and alternative medicine, integral medicine, and mind-body medicine.

Some of my favorite ideas from this book are the notion of what it really means to grow old gracefully, the return of prayer, and the idea of the patient as being inextricably intertwined in society and the environment. Now that increasing numbers of patients seek complementary and alternative forms of healing to the more traditional chemical and surgical procedures, there is a need for the healing community to establish a better vision of how to treat patients as people who matter, and whose thoughts and feelings affect their health.

CONSCIOUSNESS & HEALING is a marvelous reference book that will stimulate discussion between healing professionals and people seeking healing, and help us all figure out what new model of health care we can best create.

5 out of 5 stars The Heart of the Matter.......2004-12-29

"If I only had a heart," the tin man moans in "The Wizard of Oz" - all the while unaware of the compassion infusing his behavior. This is a book of over 60 healing experts who not only speak their science from compassionate hearts, but remind us that mainstream physicians also have hearts, yet are all too often prevented from practicing from that place by a system gone mad. Opening with Ken Wilber's brilliant introduction and Marilyn Schlitz's eloquent statement of the old/new concept of "integral medicine," my adrenaline was pumping within the first few pages. The spirit of the book models connection and cooperation with all health providers which oils the mechanism of courageous change. This compassionate attitude (careful observation of what works and what does not, as opposed to attacks) beautifully paves the new paradigm path with openness, humility and, yes, love. One is encouraged to step up to the uncertain experince of "a transformation of consciousness," a concept less daunting and decreasingly esoteric as explicated here with the variety of multi-cultural essays covering heartfelt personal experience, simple daily exercises and visionary goals - all carefully supported by mounds of empirical data. The powerful paradigm of "Integral Medicine" seems to suggest the need for an updated Hippocratic Oath. (Somehow, I believe Hoppocrates is cheering us on here.) Rather than "First, do no harm," how about "First, nurture the spirit"?

Now this is a good book. It consists of over 60 essays as well as a DVD with interviews. The book is partially directed at Ken Wilber's concept of integral medicine. Wilber is not a medical authority but an integral philosopher with many novel and important views. He considers integral medicine as a perspective that includes the patient's subjective world space (one's meaning, values, and world view), the patient's social relationships (shared meaning, values and aspirations) as well as the patient's physical condition (the focus of most Western medicine). Those of us who work in the field (mine clinical trials) will appreciate this expanded view. Ironically, each of the essayists to a large degree focus on only one of these three areas of existence. But then this is not a bad thing for each of these authors has something to contribute. It would probably be best to view Wilber's contribution, the Foreward, as a theoretical attempt to expand the concept of medicine. There are other contributors who are transpersonal and humanistic psychologists and provide a theoretical orientation adding much visionary value to this book. There are also a number of practicing clinicians who anchor the book with suggestions grounded in evidence based medicine. These include Michael Samuels, Dean Ornish, Rachel Remen, Deepak Chopra, and Larry Dosey, all both experienced clinicians and visionaries. Other outstanding researchers' essays included in this book are by Candace Pert, Jon Kabat-Zinn, David Levin, and Stephanie Simonton-Atchley. This book offers the researcher, the clinician, and the patient much material to take and from it, synthesize their own view in the crucible of life.
