Book Description
Ecotoxicology is the evaluation of toxic effects within the environment, typically within one specific ecosystem, like a forest, stream, or lake. For years now, ecotoxicological studies have tended to focus on one toxicant at a time. But that isn't how an ecosystem encounters toxicants (or stresses): there may be several elements at work in the air, several more in the water, and still more already within the soil of any given ecosystem, and all have some level of toxic influence on that ecosystem. Multiple Stresses in Ecosystems presents the state-of-the-art in determining the effects of these multiple impacts upon ecosystems. Resulting from a vanguard conference originally held in 1993 at UC Davis, this new work is divided into three sections that present methodolgies for assessing the health of an ecosystem; the effects of multiple toxicological impacts upon an ecosystem, and which tools are worth using to assess these dangers. Environmental scientists, chemists, toxicologists, risk analysts, and probably the entire membership of SETAC will find need for this book, as will wetlands scientists, ecologists, and research biologists.

Great book!.......2005-01-21
Volume 3 in a great series, this one focusing on takedowns and throws, attacks and escapes from the back, mount, north and south, and breaking the grip. History, intro, and rules for competition sections are continuations of what is in volumes 1 and 2. Plenty of black and white photos, as in the first three volumes, with 13 - 38 techniques in each section. Great techniques, in huge quantities, with many linked into "if he resists" chains. All gi, although many techniques can be used no-gi. Suggestions are similar to other volumes: explanations can be a little spartan, and no details on how to maintain positional control. Also, as a whole, the series does not cover escapes from submissions. On the whole, though, outstanding value given sheer quantity of great information, compared with BJJ VHS/DVD techniques/dollar.

RIGANS Jiu-jitsu Works plain and simple!!.......2007-09-10
Everything Rigan shows in his books works, the guy is a jiu_jitsu genius!!! Great book, easy to follow, nothing flamboyant in this book. Exactly what you would expect from the best Jiu-JItsu fighter on the planet. Check out Jean-jacques book too!!!! AWESOME!!!
Good visual and Memory Prompt.......2005-08-31
Good guide for beginners to intermediates. Pictures help with stimulating memory to recall moves during training, but inevitably nothing is better than a good teacher and mat time.
A fantastic book in a great series.......2005-05-14
This series is an essential addition to your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu library, if you don't own it you should.
No Index.......2005-02-17
This book could have been great. The information is well written and well laid out.
BUT:
IT DOESNT HAVE AN INDEX! What was the author thinking when he wrote an "Encyclopedia" and didnt include an index????
It also doesnt name the techniques, so imagine a class where you are discussing "Technique number 37" this does not lend itself to learning or teaching.
Frustrating to read
Book Description
This leading introductory Italian text features a balanced, flexible four-skills approach to communicative competency, cultural awareness, and language structures.
- The grammar has been modified, primarily in the second half of the text, to integrate topics from the final two lessons, and move advanced topics to the appendix. Possessive adjectives and the partitive have been moved to the first half in response to user suggestions.
- Lesson themes have been revised to include the cinema and incorporate politics earlier in the book. Also, lesson dialogues and cultural notes have been updated.
Customer Reviews:
Disjointed, but accurate, which is most important.......2006-11-10
This Italian book is accurate and engaging. I highly recommend it. The only reason this is not a five-star recommendation is because of two reasons. First the price, it's over $80 for the book, which is very expensive, and second to get the most out of the book, you would need to bounce around the chapters, read them out-of-order. For example, some examples in the early chapters introduce grammar that is not taught until later chapters. Some people can proactively figure things out, but not everyone can. But in comparison to other italian language books, this is the best.
Worthy of better than the negative reviews........2006-04-25
I'm sorry, but I just don't get the detractors to this text. With apologies to Pimsleur, learning a language is hard work. OK, if you want to learn how to say, "Hello," or, "Where is the bathroom," try one of the quickie methods, but if you want to be fluent in a conversation, live in Italy, or study there, there is no substitute for struggling with the pedagogy. Maybe there are some of us that can pick up a language effortlessly, but I'm not one of them. I was raised in an Italian family and heard it every day when I was a child, but when it came to really learning Italian, I had to sit down and work on it ... hard. This is a fine basic text, covering all the tenses, grammatical forms and basic vocabulary. It also nicely covers pronunciation and culture, which are often neglected in basic language texts. The material is presented in a traditional, logical manner. Yes, every now and then there is a word that is not in the glossary, but that is part of language ... sometimes someone says a word you just don't know. I guess that is what a dictionary is for. To use this text effectively, I would recommend buying a dictionary and a guide to common verbs, whoich are, frankly, necessary no matter what method you use. The workbook is recommended but not necessary. If you have someone around who is fluent, so much the better, but you can do almost as well by listening to the news at night from Italy on the Internet, buying an Italian movie or two, and struggling through an Italian novel a few sentances at a time. Work your way through this book and you will have passable conversational Italian, and be able to work your way through a newspaper as well. If you don't want to put in the sweat equity to learn Italian, sign up for a brain transplant, but otherwise, go out and buy a book like this one and plan on some hard work. Your effort will not dissapoint you if you do.
A rip-off.......2006-03-04
A good book but enormously overpriced. every year or so a new edition is put out with a few changes which are not necessary. to keep everything uniform in a course, a new edition must therefore be purchased at an inflated price. Much of the photos and material is not new but recycled from the computer program, "Transparent Language".
A Good Textbook.......2005-08-22
This textbook has a few features that are good for the first year student. First, the beginning chapters are mostly in English, introducing only a few Italian words at a time until the student builds up a vocabulary, and then, the lessons are gradually presented entirely in Italian. The supplement and appendix provides a quick reference to noun and adjective suffixes, indefinite adjectives and pronouns, possessive pronouns, and verb conjugations. The vignettes tell little cultural stories that make learning and remembering the material more meaningful. There are also Italian proverbs throughout the chapters that are fun to practice. This textbook is very good to use for refreshing on material. However, like many foreign language textbooks, all instructions eventually are presented entirely in Italian. Without a translated explanation of the assignment, students may not fully understand the exercise. Another problem is that there are many group exercises, so teachers have to watch students to make certain that the students are correctly doing the practice. There is no answer key for students on the exercises. There is also a lot of material covered in the book and it is nearly impossible to complete the entire book within the first year, so teachers need to plan well what types of exercises to do within the classroom and to carefully decide which exercises can later be assigned for outside homework.
A Great Introduction to the Italian Language.......2003-08-12
As a student of Italian for over 4 years, I returned to the language in college and used this textbook. The text was great...very current and up-to-date with everything Italian. Lab/video manual was a bit choppy but did the job for our listening assignments. Can't comment on the video component for this course set. This text is very similar to Parliamo Italiano! so either textbook would serve a new student well.

Minestrone.......2002-07-06
This text is a soupy mixture of chunks of material. It follows the annoying trend in language books toward using words and grammatical concepts in exercises before they are introduced and explained. It also still has a number of typos even after several editions. More serious problems are the flat out grammatical usage errors that emerge in the later chapters. The whole subject of accent marks is poorly addressed nor are the verbs (-rre verbs), that contradict the statement that only three endings are possible, ever explained. I also object to the practise of frequently issuing new editions which are superficially modified to sell new books but do not correct or improve the text in any meaningful manner. Teachers please pass on using this textbook!
il peggiore.......2002-05-14
I completely agree with Erickson's review. I have just finished two semesters using this book. I can't say enough bad things about it. If you get suckered into a course that uses this book I recommend that you immediately go out and buy/use the following:
1. Shaum's Italian Grammar
2. 501 Italian Verbs
3. Italian Verbs and Essentials of Grammar
4. English Grammar for Students of Italian
Anyone that gives this Oggi in Italia a good review must be on the payroll of the publisher/author.
Che Peccatto!.......2001-02-13
I have been using this book as a part of a series of beginning to intermediate level Italian. While the book does an adequate job in some areas, it leaves a lot to be desired. For example, the glossary doesn't contain many of the words used in the book. There are exercise which use words that have not been learned and which are not in the dictionary. The vocabulary in each chapter is somewhat arranged by topic, but is incomplete and confusing. The book is designed to follow as a sort of episodic course, but it is a horrible reference book, and concepts like verb tenses are separated by pages and sometimes over several chapters.
It is unfortunate that this seems to be the seminal textbook for Italian. It does the job, but surely there must be something better out there.
A first-rate language study text.......2000-06-07
I am in the second semester of an Italian course and find Oggi in Italia interesting to read and to work from. The pattern to the book is given at the beginning, and each of the lessons follows the pattern. Especially noteworthy in the book are the currency and relevancy of its references to people, places, TV shows, etc. If I were teaching a course in Italian, I would choose this book as a text. In my opinion, the companion workbook isn't really needed, since the textbook has many exercises in it. Also, it should be supplemented with audio tapes, either the companion set or other tapes aimed at the basic-intermediate levels.
Confusing.......1999-11-07
This is a truly attrocious text book. I've been forced to use it for the last 18 months and it's been almost no help. The layout is confusing, the information contradictory or irrelevant and the price is excessive. Avoid this book like the plague if you're serious about learning Italian.

Excellent textbook.......2000-05-17
Oggi in Italia, Fourth Edition, is an excellent textbook. It is clear and concise and very well organized. The vocabulary and situations presented are everyday, realistic situations that anyone visiting the country would be faced with. I do wish this book was still in print! There are a lot of drills and that is really the best way to learn a language.

Customer Reviews:
great fitness resource before, during and after pregnancy.......2007-09-07
I'm a fitness instructor and I bought this book so I could be well versed on giving modifications to pregnant women that come to my classes. I found the book to be informative and contain a good amount of information beyond the typical "don't lay on your back" type of thing. The book addresses the pregnant athlete, eating well, posture, meditiation, stretching, getting in exercise while doing activities around the house, your skin, hormones, discomforts, etc. The book has some basic sketches/drawings in it which I thought were value added but this is not a picture book.
I found the book to be a great guide and it is recommended by the American Council on Exercise, which is who I have my group exercise certification through and how I originally found out about the book. I look forward to using the information for myself one day. In the meantime, I'm loaning it to one of my trusted newly pregnant students so she can keep fit while pregnant. I highly recommend this one especially if you're only buying one fitness book for pregnancy.
