Book Description

This book is unique in that it covers the philosophy of model-based data analysis and an omnibus strategy for the analysis of empirical data. The book introduces information theoretic approaches and focuses critical attention on a priori modeling and the selection of a good approximating model that best represents the inference supported by the data. Kullback-Leibler information represents a fundamental quantity in science and is Hirotugu Akaike's basis for model selection. The maximized log-likelihood function can be bias-corrected to provide an estimate of expected, relative Kullback-Leibler information. This leads to Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) and various extensions and these are relatively simple and easy to use in practice, but little taught in statistics classes and far less understood in the applied sciences than should be the case. The information theoretic approaches provide a unified and rigorous theory, an extension of likelihood theory, an important application of information theory, and are objective and practical to employ across a very wide class of empirical problems. Parameter estimation has long been viewed as an optimization problem (e.g., maximize the log-likelihood or minimize the residual sum of squared deviations) and under the information theoretic paradigm, data-based model selection is also an optimization problem. This brings model selection and parameter estimation under a common framework - optimization. The value of AIC is computed for each a priori model to be considered and the model with the minimum AIC is used for statistical inference. However, the paradigm described in this book goes beyond merely the computation and interpretation of AIC to select a parsimonious model for inference from empirical data; it refocuses increased attention on a variety of considerations and modeling prior to the actual analysis of data.

5 out of 5 stars Model Selection and Multi-Model Inference .......2007-03-09

Those interested in mark-recapture models definitely should have this extraordinary book.
Very complete and easy to read

4 out of 5 stars Good, but far too prolix.......2005-08-24

I admire this book very much for its accessible treatment of AIC, but if were reduced in length by half, it would be twice as good. The authors cannot resist repeating themselves, usually several times, especially when giving advice of the "motherhood and apple pie" variety. Another annoying feature is that many references are given for philosophical points, yet sometimes when a useful result is given without proof, no reference is provided. For example, on page 12 an expression for maximized likelihood is given without a derivation or a reference. Inside this fat book there is a thin book crying to be let out.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best introduction to AIC (Akaike's Information Criterion)!!!.......2005-08-18

AIC is one of the widely known methods in model selection and inference.
This book includes not only a basic use but also advanced issues of the information-theoretic approach.
Using this book, you will learn the application of AIC soon!

Burnham and Anderson have put together a scholarly account of the developments in model selection techniques from the information theoretic viewpoint. This is an important practical subject. As computer algorithms become more and more available for fitting models and data mining and exploratory analysis become more popular and used more by novices, problems with overfitting models will again raise their ugly heads. This has been an issue for statisticians for decades. But the problems and the art of model selection has not been commonly covered in elementary courses on statistics and regression. George Box puts proper emphasis on the iterative nature of model selection and the importance of applying the principle of parismony in many of his books. Classic texts on regression like Draper and Smith point out the pitfalls of goodness of ift measures like R-square and explain Mallows Cp and adjusted R-square. There are now also a few good books devoted to model selection including the book by McQuarrie and Tsai (that I recently reviewed for Amazon) and the Chapman and Hall monograph by A. J. Miller.

Burnham and Anderson address all these issues and provide the best coverage to date on bootstrap and cross-validation approaches. They also are careful in their historical account and in putting together some coherence to the scattered literature. They are thorough in their references to the literature. Their theme is the information theoretic measures based on the Kullback-Liebler distance measure. The breakthrough in this theory came from Akaike in the 1970s and improvements and refinement came later. The authors provide the theory, but more importantly, they provide many real examples to illustrate the problems and show how the methods work.

They also refer to the recent work in Bayesian methods. Chapter 1 is a great introduction that everyone should read. Being a fan of the bootstrap I was interested in their coverage of it in chapters 4, 5 and 6 (much of which is the authors' own work).

Because the authors work in biological fields they cover survival models as well as the standard time series and regression models where most of the emphasis has been placed on model selection in the past.

It is a great reference source and an important book for learning about model selection as part of the inferential process. The pictures of the famous contributors inserted throughout the book is also nice to see. We have Akaike, Boltzmann, Shibata, Kullback, and Liebler brought to life in photographs or sketches.

4 out of 5 stars Okay but needs dedication.......2007-07-13

This is an interesting book. As a runner who recently picked up training after about 20 years of (more or less) inaction, this book has brought back old skills and helped me see the importance of cross-training. At the same time it has shown me that I need to keep up my stretching and strength training. The author does not really help you pick a new sport, but explains why cross training is important. There are some suggested programs but this is more an introduction to cross training than a manual.

You have to be dedicated to put the suggestions in the book to good use, but if you're not dedicated then you probably don't bother with this book anyway.

It's a good book to have in your library, and the writing is good enough to read from cover to cover. But you will want a more focused book when you choose your xt sport, for example cycling.

5 out of 5 stars Arban trumpet book.......2006-11-22

My daughter has been using this book ever since she was fortunate enough to meet a certain famous trumpet player from New Orleans when she was 11 years old. He took the time to speak one on one with her and after hearing how dedicated she was to practicing, told her he wanted her to start using this book. Very cool! She began using it with her private teacher and just as Brian Tomcik said previoulsy, had taped pages all over the place. (I would recommend getting the book spiral bound, as my Arban's is covered in all types of tape. A previous reviewer said that the Arban's wasn't her trumpet bible - I'm willing to bet she stinks at playing the trumpet because of it. ) I took it to Kinko's had them laminate the covers so they would be sturdier and then spiral bind it, and it has been MUCH easier to use! It has been 5 years since she first got the book, and besides her high school and lesson music, it is THE book that lives on her music stand at home! It IS the trumpet bible!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Essential.......2006-06-15

As a professional trumpeter and trumpet instructor, I've found no other book that even approaches the Arban. From Doc Severinsen to Maurice Andre to Chris Botti and every kind of trumpeter in between, this is the book that created a foundation for all of them. Reading the other reviews here, I understand that (with exception of the characteristic studies, duets, and solos in the back of the book) this is a book of exercises. In fact, it's sort of a "Sears catalog" of trumpet exercises. And no, exercises are usually not very interesting or fun. However, it's the gains you make from the exercises that matter, and most kids age 12 and up actually appreciate the structure and routine. Once students have a correct embouchure, range to the top of the staff and basic articulation, they should move on to the Arban book. The sky is the limit from there.

    5 out of 5 stars The Trumpeter's Bible.......2006-05-18

I have had my Arban's since I began playing the trumpet. My copy was passed down to me by my band director Mr. Kilmury who was also a trumpeter. He told me upon giving it to me that I was to cherish it and learn from it because it was like the bible of trumpet playing. To this day those words hold true. Arban's has everything a trumpet player needs to help them from the beginning onto professional playing. My copy is old now and falling apart... but I still play from it and hold it dear to my heart.

If you are a trumpeter, buy this for yourself. If you know a trumpet player, surprise them with a copy of this. Believe me they will thank you for it.

    4 out of 5 stars Arban's is the Bible, but . . . ........2005-12-14

I've been using Arban's for years and love it. It has every conceivable, technical exercise for trumpet/cornet. However, a 12 or 13 yr. old will never continue playing only scales and exercises? Never! This book is overwhelming for younger players and should be consulted as the maturity increases, never used alone (unless you expect your child to quit). As an adult trumpet player, I consult Arban's for technical exercise training, but I too would go mad if this were all I had to play. Fisher's 40 Progressive Etudes, lip flexibility books and yes, lots and lots of sheet music that is fun to play!

    5 out of 5 stars it's the Bible.......2005-09-21

Yes, it's a pain to haul around a giant book with you every time you want to practice. But there is simply nothing else like it for quality. I used it in high school when I wanted to improve my skills and I am using it now that I want to get them back. If you only buy one trumpet book, this is the one to buy.

I am going to let you read the book to find out about them, lets just say they're cool. I could ramble about this book for days, but the morgage dictates so farewell.

5 out of 5 stars Review of The City of Gold and Lead.......2005-09-30

The City of Gold and Lead is a fascinating book. In fact, I was a little sad when I finished it, but the cliffhanger for the next book lifted my spirits.

This book was the second book in the series, The Tripods. It began where the last book ended, The White Mountains. Friends Will, Beanpole, Henry, and other people that lived in the white mountains were completing their training to try to get in the games. The games are like the Olympics. The winners of the game would go on and serve the master in the City of Gold and Lead. The City of Gold and Lead is where the tripods live. Tripods are evil machines that take control of your mind using caps. Will, Beanpole, and another boy named Fritz were accepted to go to the games. Henry had to stay back because he was not selected to participate in the games. Both Will and Fritz won in their sports category. They now had to serve the masters because winners were considered strong and fearless. However, the real purpose of a winner serving a master is to gather information on the dreaded Tripods. If by chance the winner escapes, he will be able to take the information back to his land. No one has ever been known to escape. I will not give away any secrets and reveal if Will and Fritz escaped. You will have to read the book to find out.

I found the entire book exciting. The characters are very well developed. At the end of each chapter, I was anxious to find out what happened next. The book ended with a spectacular cliffhanger. When I read the last sentence, "We would come back," I instantly wanted to read the next book in this series.

I recommend this book for ages 12 to 101 years old. This is a great book waiting to be read. After you read this book, you should also read the first book and the preface book. The preface book gives you background information on how the tripods invaded earth and where the caps come from. The City of Gold and Lead is a must read book. I guarantee you will not be disappointed!

                      4 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2005-09-09

This is a great series for kids of all ages. We are reading it to our 6 year old who is inthrolled and cannot wait for the next night and the next chapter! My mother in law read it to my husband and he is thrilled to be reading it to his child!

4 out of 5 stars When the lights go down in the city.......2004-04-27

The second book (or third, if you consider the prequel the first book) in John Christopher's massive Tripod series. Continuing where, "The White Mountains" left off, the book follows the adventures of Will and his fight against the Tripods and their alien masters. The book furthers our knowledge about the invaders of Earth and their personal lives. Will and a fellow uncapped boy are given the chance to enter into the home of the Tripods. Once there, Will finds himself a slave to one of the aliens that live in the city and his companionship with this creature leads to further knowledge. This book also marks the point at which Will learns of the aliens' final solution (referred to here as The Plan) for earth's original inhabitants.

I found myself enjoying this book far more than "The White Mountains" itself. Though the first book in the series was far more action packed and filled with gripping chase and escape sequences, the second book is filled with fascinating descriptions of the Masters and their alien lifestyle. This is the kind of book we've been waiting for. Who are these creatures that fit every human with a silver mesh of a cap, making them docile and compliant? Where are they from? How extensive is their knowledge? And, most importantly, how can they be beaten?

Christopher has inserted a clever handicap into this tale that keeps Will from doing anything rash or careless. Neither Will nor his fellow uncapped slave can reveal their true intentions. From the moment they enter the city of gold and lead (so nicknamed for its design and intense gravity) to the moment they are supposed to leave, our heroes mustn't reveal to the Masters that they are uncapped or that a resistance has been planned. The writing in this tale never lingers unduly and the narrative is crisp and swift. Even reluctant readers will breeze through this tale, stopping to marvel at the amazing world the author has created within the boundaries of the city.

I'll admit it right now. Until this book I never really noticed the similarities between this series and H.G. Wells' remarkable "War of the Worlds". Certainly both stories rely on the world being conquered by huge tripods from outer space. In both cases, the aliens responsible for earth's enslavement are unwilling to consider human beings' rights. But the final similarity, and the most striking, is the physical resemblance between the aliens found here in "City of Gold and Lead" and the Wells classic. Both books contain aliens that have tentacles and can't breathe Earth's air. Has Christopher stolen his ideas and made them palatable to children? Perhaps. If so, I've no real objection to his strategy. Slightly more infuriating is his continued dismissal of women in general. If there are female aliens, we're never told of them. As for the girls sent, like the boys, to the city to work as slaves for the Masters, they are quickly dispatched. Apparently Christopher reasoned that while men can handle physical labor and pain, girls cannot. As such, women are killed and the most beautiful amongst them are placed in glass display cases to be observed. Forget trying to search for any symbolism here. It's obvious that the aliens, in addition to being wholly male, are just as sexist as their human counterpoints. While the first book in the Tripod series had a few weak willed females here and there, this book hasn't a single living woman in it AT ALL. This is fairly weird, even for a boy's adventure novel. So on a level of one to five (one being the least chauvinist and five being the most) I'd place this book squarely at 4.7.

Otherwise, I've no objections at all. The book is well paced, well written, and well thought out. All in all, a delightful read that makes one even more eager to read the final chapter in the trilogy.

4 out of 5 stars science fiction for a novice..........2004-03-24

this book is a great one to start off your reading of science fiction with. with many twists and turns, this book shall keep you on the edge of your seat, and perhaps even make you fall of of it!
it's a basic sciecne fiction story, two kids go to an alien city, try to get info on how to kill the aliens, and actusally almost get killed along the way.
this is a great book, no doubt, but it does have a couple boring parts. good luck with reading it!

5 out of 5 stars A great read for kids and adults........2006-05-31

I originally read this series of novels back in the late 1960's. As a matter of fact I still have my copy of The White Mountains. The ONLY negative thing I have to say is that "When the Tripods Came" is written 20 years after the series was first published and I thought this book was unnecessary - a person's imagination doesn't need EVERYTHING spelled out for them. If you kids (or you) haven't read this series, then do so ASAP!

I read the original three when I was thirteen back in the 70's. I had always wanted my boys to read these books but I had lost the first two over the years. I have just found the series again and I'm thrilled to turn my kids on to this great read.

4 out of 5 stars Very good series, both entertaining and thought provoking.......2005-08-31

I first borrowed these from my local library after seeing them mentioned on a booklist. I have since read each of them more than once. Since they are not always checked in when I want them, I decided to buy them. (I also plan to have my children read them.)

When the Tripods Came was originally written as a prequel, after the other 3 books. Personally, I think it is best read after the other 3 as well, but it is good in any order.

The prequel explains how earth came to be taken over by a group of aliens, and how these aliens managed to control the minds of nearly every person on the planet. It also explains how a small group managed to avoid this mind control, setting up the possibility of a resistance.

The other 3 books take place a century later, in a world that does not remember the time before the Tripods, except by the ruins of ancient cities. Those who have the mind control "caps" surgically implanted on their heads (a rite that takes place at the age of 13) are incapable of questioning their Masters, and accept that everything the Tripods do is completely right and good. A few boys (and a very few girls) manage to escape before the "capping" ceremony, and find their way to the high mountains of Switzerland, where there is a small group of the "Free". After a hundred years of preparation, the Free are preparing to begin the battle for the freedom of Earth.
