As I read this book and enjoy the beautiful photography of rivers, trees, flowers, and wildlife it is for me like taking a visual vacation through the South Carolina lowcountry. It has just enough information to satisfy my curiousity about the environment. I appreciate all of the talent and knowledge that went in to compiling this prize possession.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos in a keepsake coffee-table book........2000-11-30

Blagden's artistic photographs truly capture the spirit of the South Carolina Lowcountry. They're divided into six sections: Tidal Rivers, Upland Forests, Swamp Forests and Freshwater Wetlands, The Salt Marsh, Barrier Islands, and The Coastal Edge. Highly recommended for anyone who loves the beauty of one of our most biodiverse states. Would make a great gift.

    Book Description

It was 1982 when Bill Lee was famously booted from the Montreal Expos after he went AWOL in protest of another player’s mistreatment by management. His reputation for antics both on and off the field guaranteed that no other club would pick him up. The Ace from Space had landed on professional baseball’s blacklist, and so it was that one of the most popular major-league pitchers of our day was fated to pack his bags and wander the globe searching for a ball game.

Have Glove, Will Travel is the chronicle of an amazing odyssey that began more than twenty years ago and continues today. Unable to live without baseball, Lee went anywhere he could find a game, beginning in the dank and dreary locker room of a Canadian hockey team that later became a softball team. We follow him around the world as he competes in pickup games, town tournaments, senior leagues, and fantasy camps, barnstorming like a modern Satchel Paige around the United States, South America, China, Cuba, Russia, and every province in Canada.

At the heart of this story are the rollicking, colorful characters Lee meets during his travels, and the mishaps that befall him whether he’s sober or stoned. There’s the eccentric Latin pitching master Lee plays with in Cuba, who once struck out Ernest Hemingway. And a hilarious story that takes place in the backwoods of a British Columbia timber town, where Lee and Hall-of-Famer Ferguson Jenkins go fishing and end up being chased back to their pickup truck by a 450-pound black bear.

Have Glove, Will Travel is so much more than the average baseball book. Lee’s humor, keen eye for detail, and extraordinary pitching intellect are always on display, but in the end this book is a love story about a middle-aged maverick who refused to stop pursuing his passion for a boy’s game long after the grown-ups told him he couldn’t play on their team anymore. Readers who loved Lee’s bestselling The Wrong Stuff, also written with Richard Lally, will find the long wait for this rich and wonderful sequel well worth it. Those who haven’t yet encountered the literary Bill Lee have a great treat in store.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest books I've ever read!.......2007-04-04

I read both "The Wrong Stuff", and "Have Glove Will Travel", both writen by Bill Lee. And "Have Glove Will Travel" is a seaqule to "The Wrong Stuff". This book is not as much about baseball as the first was. This book is mostly how Bill Lee lived his life after the majors. He still plays ball in leagues and stays in shape, while playing baseball. I read this book and I was constantly laughing. Bill Lee has a love for baseball and it will always last and never die out. I love baseball and loved this book. I think that anybody as interested in baseball as I am will enjoy this book. It is a great laugh for all levels of ball players. Even for the non-ball player.

5 out of 5 stars Bill Lee, A Great Baseball Ambassador.......2007-01-18

Great book, could not put it down or stop laughing. Loved his insights and sense of humor, and brutal honesty towards himself. He was right on the money about Rodney Scott and Bernie Carbo (from his previous book). Saw highlights of the 1981 playoff series with Montreal and LA. Rodney Scott was a great basestealer and very quick. Could see how he made opponents nervous when on the basepaths. Being more of a fan of American League baseball, never got to see him play until the highlight film. Without a doubt, Bernie Carbo might have made a difference in the 1978 playoff game with Boston vs New York. Gossage got most of his outs against right hand batters that day (George Scott, Butch Hobson, Bob Bailey, Dwight Evans, Jim Rice).

Playing the game of baseball for as long as he has proves that Bill Lee played for the love of the game and has done his best to promote it in different parts of the globe. It seems as if todays player forget why they began playing baseball, it was not for money, but for love of the game.

    5 out of 5 stars Incorrigible Fun.......2006-06-21

They called him "Spaceman" - an opinionated, wise-cracking, irreverent, incorrigible, narcissistic party animal. Bill Lee was major league baseball's redheaded step child - an unapologetic, pot smoking counter-culturist in a tradition bound profession who delighted fans while infuriating baseball's brass with his wild antics and outspokenness. His book, `Have Glove Will Travel', is a perfect reflection of his persona, and whether or not you enjoy it will depend heavily on how much you enjoy Bill Lee. Reading it you feel like you are sitting around with "Spaceman", sharing a joint and a bottle while he regales you with story after story of his experiences - some of them perhaps more tall than true, but all of them entertaining.

In `Have Glove Will Travel', Lee tells the stories of his life after major league baseball - from the point in 1982 when he was released from the Montreal Expos and subsequently blackballed from the major leagues for offending the lords of baseball one time too many till the present. Though banished from the temple of the major leagues, baseball was in his blood, and a pitcher is what he was, so he continued his career playing for whatever semi-pro league or outfit that would have him. Playing throughout the U.S. and Canada, South America, Cuba, and Russia with teammates and opponents that ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous, Bill continued his baseball ways and collected these tales. From running for president on the Rhinoceros Party ticket in 1988 to teaching Ted Williams something he didn't know about his hitting ability, all of these tales are vintage "Spaceman".

Lee's book is easy reading and great entertainment. Each chapter stands alone as a complete tale, and you can read them in pretty much any order that amuses you - stopping to refresh your drink or roll a new one between stories if needed. If you love baseball for the pure joy of it as Lee does, and if you appreciate his non-conformist, screwball ways, then you will be sure to find `Have Glove Will Travel' a homerun of a book.

I really enjoyed the book. Very easy to read, very funny, poignant at times, wistful at times. A very entertaining and insightful book. I recommend it, both for people who enjoy Bill Lee and his ways of being, and for people who would like to know more about the inner workings of baseball and its people.

The Character Workbooks are designed to help the student learn Chinese characters in their correct stroke order. In the Level 1 workbooks, stroke order for each new character is displayed, along with its pinyin pronunciation and English translation. Character boxes allow students to practice writing the characters. The Level 2 Character workbook, in addition to stroke order, presents example sentences to illustrate word usage in context. The Level 2 Character workbook includes both simplified and traditional character forms. Four useful appendices are included in the Level 2 Character workbook: A list of proper nouns and measure words; an English-Chinese glossary that includes all vocabulary in Levels 1 and 2; a Chinese character index that lists all characters appearing in Levels 1 and 2; and the simplified-form example sentences that appear in traditional characters throughout the book's text.

The audio is choppy and sometimes hard to understand. Speakers sometimes speak fast on all speeds whether slow, regular, or fast. Also speakers have different accents and makes for inconsistent pronunciation.

3 out of 5 stars Hated Hunter-Liked Man in control.......2007-07-16

dp often has the scenario of older nasty hero and young naive heroine. Most of the time, the hero is redeemable sometime during the book. However, Hunter is just downright cruel through the whole book until the last few pages. Even in the love scenes, he's cruel. I couldn't believe a beautiful intelligent woman would continue to let herself be treated like that. It was hard to read because I had read "The Outsider" and Hunter is featured several times in this book and a likable good guy so thought reading his story would be fun but there wasn't anything fun about it. YIKES!
The redeeming part of this book was "Man in Control" and why 3 stars instead of one. He isn't nearly as mean and nasty and much more likeable early on. There is humor in this story and interesting that Alexander won't make love to Jodie until they are married. That was different then most of the other dp books.

PUBLISHER DESCRIPTION: Man in Control: Ever since DEA agent Alexander Cobb had given Jodie Clayburn a Texas-size brush-off, they'd been sworn enemies. Or that she'd help him crack the drug-smuggling case that threatened Jacobsville. He'd risk everything to protect her. Would the man in control finally get caught in his own web of danger...and desire?

Hunter, published in 1990, centers on Hunter, thought to be somewhat alpha, part Native American security chief, and Jennifer Marist, thought to be somewhat prissy, geologist.

Man in Control, published in 2003, centers on DEA agent Alexander Tyrell Cobb & HR Assistant Jordana "Jodie" Clayburn. This story combines the typical "younger-sister's-best-friend's crush-on turned love-for, the older brother with a DEA investigation; add a dash of humor, family issues, esteem issues; then include ties to the Long, Tall Texans of Jacobsville Texas, and the Mercenaries, aka Soldiers of Fortune, and you have a story as only Diana Palmer can tell it. (One of my favorite DPs!!!)

Two classic Diana Palmer reprints, both are solid stories that are typically DP. These two are probably reprinted together because Hunter appears in Man in Control.

This book offers "cookie-cutter" solutions to parenting problems. I felt that there was nothing new presented in the book...simplistic ideas that you can find in any parenting book. It's common sense that you should reinforce the positives, reward good behavior, spend time with your child, listen without judging so that the child doesn't get defensive. If you're a beginner to this type of thinking this book is for you. If you've been around and around the block with your "hard to handle child" you'll find better information in "Setting Limits with your Strong-Willed Child" by Robert MacKenzie. For a Christian perspective, try "Boundaries with Kids" by Cloud and Townsend.

5 out of 5 stars Changed our Lives!.......2001-01-19

I was looking for a book to help my boy and me (he was in Grade 1 last year and was having real terrible problems in school to the point the headmaster and teachers found it hard to handle him). I have been having problems handling him myself eversince he was 3 years old. After reading this book, it has really opened my eyes to my type of parenting (authoritarian) and to what "type" of child he is. He is hyperactive and after applying the many advice and parenting techniques, his behavior (and mine) have changed a lot for the better! The "Support through Listening" has given us a breakthrough. My son, knowing now that I understand him, has such a confidence that it had brought him out of a lot of his temper tantrums at home and it had also helped in his low self-esteem. The positive and negative feedback had been truly helpful and the reward system has made life a lot easier. Though I have not put everything that was suggested into practice, I am keeping this as a handbook - will be incorporating bit by bit the productive parenting techniques into our (my husband and I) lives. I thank God for this fantastic book and am deeply grateful to Dr Edwards for his brilliant "workable" strategies and for the encouragement that we've (the whole family) benefitted from it! I have recommended this book to some of my friends.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and effective handling of a hard to handle subject.......2000-10-05

Dr. Edwards provides advice on handling the HTH kid. The approach he uses is based upon his vast knowledge and experience in the the field of child psychology. I found that the advice he gives in his book is both simple and sage. He stresses consistency and calm, which produces positive results.

I have even met Dr. Edwards and know first hand that the methods espoused in his book are the ones he practices on a daily basis. In our area he is known by both deed and reputation. He does not speak above you or below you. He does not assume that you are a bad parent because you have a HTH kid. Throughout the book, he imparts simplistic wisdom, through understanding why the behaviors occur and how they can be "changed". This is not a "pop-psychology" quick fix fad book. It gives you reasonable steps to provide reasonable structure and consistency for your child.

HTH kids have a good "extra" parent in Dr. Edwards. He provides calm and reasonable solutions to understanding the HTH kids. He has made me a better parent by showing that even parents need to have structure and guidance.

Even if you do not have a HTH kid, by following Dr. Edwards advice, you will be a better parent and your child benefit from your newfound wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars Solid, helpful advice.......1999-04-22

The ideas on dealing with bedtime hassles made my life, and my girl's, much easier. She can still be difficult, but I've learned how to respond more effectively.

      2 out of 5 stars Hard-to-handle behaviors not children........1999-03-07

The title of this book is quite misleading to a parent who is looking for help in raising their challenging child. The author does a good enough job with dispensing advice on how to generally deal with hard-to-handle behavior. However, he completely misses the mark on hard-to-handle kids.

Dr. Edwards begins the book with a clear enough discussion on temperment and how it should be taken into account when dealing with children's behavior. Unfortunately, he does not follow his own advice throughout the remainder of the book.

Even the chapter on dealing with specific hard-to-handle situations fails to discuss temperment. Dr. Edwards ignores that mealtime difficulties, for example, can be played out differently in children with varying temperments. He speaks in vague generalities. These hard-to-handle problems cannot always be boiled down so simplistically.

For parents of children who are less intense and a bit more flexible, Dr. Edwards advice may be enlightening, but it is of little use to a parent of challenging child.

5 out of 5 stars The light and shadow of emotion -- Highly recommended.......2001-09-22

Meghan Patterson represents the exact kind of trouble Detective Gabe Conally tries to avoid with secrets in her eyes and lies on her lips. His fascination is purely business, of course, since her nephew is a valuable witness. Never mind the first kiss backfires, failing to prove there isn't any attraction between them. Few women elicit an emotion response him, beyond the obvious, but Meghan touches parts of him that he has never shared with anyone. Soon he finds himself offering to investigate the case involving Meghan's sister, despite the fact that the case is closed, in exchange of her nephew Danny's assistance in an ongoing investigation.

Meghan believes the Chicago police are responsible for her sister's death and will do anything to protect Danny from the same fate. Her sister had been telepathic, a gift she'd passed to her son. Further, Meghan guards her hard won privacy carefully. Gabe's presence brings her pain, anger, and regret too close to the surface. She finds his intensity unnerving even as she fights her growing desire for this irritating, persistent man. Her sister's death appears to be tied to another case Gabe's working, and Meghan finds herself drawn into Gabe's world despite her protestations.

Kylie Brant brings two cynics who believe the only person they can trust is himself or herself together in HARD TO HANDLE. While he was a juvenile delinquent and she was from a wealthy family, they both know the meaning of pain and betrayal. The growth of these characters as they begin the difficult job of exposing vulnerabilities and risking further hurt makes them endearing and believable. Further, outrageous, sizzling heat always threatens just beneath the surface to erupt in tumultuous passion, refusing to allow them to simply walk away. In addition, the inclusion of a five-year-old telepath lends HARD TO HANDLE an addition challenge, resulting in a vividly unique read. Very highly recommended.

        Book Description

This latest installment in the Modesty Blaise pulp-fiction series opens with Willie Garvin, Modesty's loyal lieutenant, rescuing a Hong Kong businessman from a Red Chinese jail. The thrills continue when Willie is kidnapped by Sibyl Pray and held prisoner at the Hostel of Righteousness, the headquarters for delusional terrorist Dr. Thaddeus Pilgrim, on the Greek island of Kalivari. The plot thickens as Willie is brainwashed into believing that Modesty has been killed and that he must kill her murderer—a woman who looks exactly like Modesty. When Modesty finds herself kidnapped and brought to Kalivari, she is forced to fight in deadly gladiatorial combat against Willie. Peppered with ingenious twists of fortune, varied and exotic locations, and a cast of fiendishly evil villains, this is a classic Modesty Blaise adventure.

3 out of 5 stars "He's probably wondering about 'is next incarnation. He's certainly finished with this one.".......2007-02-17

How would you react on being stalked by a gunman on a lonely beach, and you're alone with a bikini-clad young lady and no weapon anywhere around?

That's the situation Willie Garvin, Modesty Blaise's close companion, is faced with in chapter two of "Dead Man's Handle". Willie, who is known for being very inventive, asks the young lady to lend him her bikini bottom and ... well, read the book and be amazed.

"He's probably wondering about 'is next incarnation. He's certainly finished with this one." (page 30) says Willie a couple of pages later in a comment on the condition of the would-be attacker. And now the stage is set for the slow but sure escalation leading to the final climax some 200 pages later.

"Dead Man's Handle" (1985), like all of the Modesty books, is an action thriller about Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin. In this book they go up against a gang of criminals who, under the guise of being a religious sect, obtain money by "answering the prayers of the needy". That is, as long as the "needy" are rich and willing to pay to have their prayers answered, even when this involves the killing of a business competitor, for example.

Most of the story takes place in England and on a Greek island. The action really heats up when the bad guys kill one of Willie's girlfriends and kidnap Willie. Modesty, of course, goes after the bad guys to rescue Willie, willingly walking into what she knows is a trap just to get into contact with him again. Then comes the final battle with Modesty and Willie together against the band of approx. twelve skilled assassins.

The most disappointing thing about "Dead Man's Handle" is the main bad guy, Dr. Thaddeus Pilgrim. Dr. Pilgrim is leader of the "Hostel of Righteousness", and may be malevolent and a serious threat to Modesty and Willie, but his nastiness is a primarily a byproduct of his insanity. And it's not the kind of insanity that inspires awe or terror; instead it's an insanity that is self-destructive and petty.

Someone who feeds ground glass to a jackdaw and LSD to a white mouse is sick in a way that evokes disgust, not fright. I'd far prefer a bad guy who can really scare me, not one who is just repugnant.

Another problem with "Dead Man's Handle" is that there is too much repetitiveness. Many of the plot elements in this book are warmed-over devices from one or more of the previous books in the Modesty series. They may have been exciting the first time around, but now they're old hat, at least to those who have read the whole series.

Still, this is a Modesty book, and I am giving it three stars. There's a very nice flashback in the first chapter, telling how Willie became Modesty's right-hand man by single-handedly doing a dangerous job that should have been impossible. Modesty's and Willie's fighting skills and inventiveness are wonderful as usual, and there's the usual intelligent and humorous slant on the whole story.

In summary, the poorest book in the Modesty series, but still recommended.

I'll conclude this review with a brief critique of the whole Modesty Blaise series of books. Here's a list of all of the Modesty books, along with my ratings (1-5 stars):

        Modesty Blaise (1965) - 5 stars *****
        Sabre-Tooth (1966) - 5 stars *****
        I, Lucifer (1967) - 4 stars ****
        A Taste for Death (1969) - 5 stars *****
        The Impossible Virgin (1971) - 4 stars ****
        Pieces of Modesty (6 short stories, 1972) - 5 stars *****
        The Silver Mistress (1973) - 4 stars ****
        Last Day in Limbo (1976) - 3 stars ***
        Dragon's Claw (1978) - 3 stars ***
        The Xanadu Talisman (1981) - 3 stars ***
The Night of Morning Star (1982) - 3 stars ***
        Dead Man's Handle (1985) - 3 stars ***
Cobra Trap (5 short stories, 1996)

(Note that the last book, "Cobra Trap", came after a very long pause, and is a collection of short stories, not a novel.)

"Dead Man's Handle" marked a milestone. We Modesty fans didn't realize it at the time, but the series was basically finished. Peter O'Donnell had given us 11 books (10 novels and one collection of short stories) over a span of 21 years, and we had loved them all, and now it was over.

Looking back we can see that the quality of the series remained extremely high over the first six books, peaking with "A Taste for Death", one of the best books of fiction I've ever read. But then there was a slow and steady decline, with "Dead Man's Handle" marking a low point.

As the quality went down, the length of time between the books increased. The first few books in the series appeared at an average rate of one per year, then the frequency dropped to an average of one book every second year, and then one every third year. It was very frustrating for a die-hard Modesty fan, let me tell you.

But on reflection it was good that Peter O'Donnell stopped when he did. As mentioned, "Dead Man's Handle" marked a new low point, so it's probable that if Peter O'Donnell had continued he would have begun to make his fans unhappy about the quality, as well as the quantity.

In conclusion, if you like action thrillers placed in an international setting then give the Modesty Blaise series a try, and start with the first book. Still highly recommended, even though it's showing it's age.

5 out of 5 stars Modesty To The Rescue.......2003-03-08

Once upon a time, long ago, Modesty Blaise met Willie Garvin - and a couple Kingsley Amis reckoned to be the best criminal double act since Holmes and Watson began their adventures.
Although one of the latter Modesty books, this begins with the story of how Willie joined forces with Modesty, and how this adventure reflects forward.
All the best Peter O'Donnell characteristics are here: memorable villains, fast action, a whirling story of courage, class, strength, spirit and old fashioned human resource: it is these core elements that stop the Modesty books from dating.
Modesty and Willie are real people, action heroes with real human character and vulnerability, and in this one Modesty has to save Willie from capture and [mental torture] on a lonely island in a tale with plenty of twists and turns of high readability.
These are people books; technology does not take over, the characters are all good, even the most minor, and O'Donnell writes with a spare, humorous style that has zest and energy.
Read one of these books and find out what has made, and kept, Modesty Blaise books such a cult for 40 years.
The fights, the friendships, the finesse and the fine style make an un-putdownable book that remains, despite re-reading, one of my favourites in the 11 title series.

5 out of 5 stars Modesty is a Female James Bond!!!.......1999-04-30

Too bad I found out about Modesty too late! All of these books are out of print. Modesty is a female James Bond type of gal with a mysterious past and a lot of dangerous skills. I love her interaction with Willie Garvin and the various aspects of her character that allow her to cold-bloodedly kill when necessary and have compassion at other times! Of course, these books are a bit dated with technology, but then many of them were written in the 60's. I'd like to see these back in print!

5 out of 5 stars terrific blazing ending .......2005-01-24

In San Francisco child advocate attorney Michaela Corelli joins her two friends Lauren Massey and Rosy Constable on a lock and key party (for the pals' tales see ON THE LOOSE BY Shannon Hollis and SLOW RIDE by Carrie Alexander). To Mikki's shock her former husband Nolan Baker is at Painter's Cove Resort too. Stunning her even further, Nolan informs Mikki they are still married as the lawyer she selected to handle her divorce was disbarred before the filing.

Though he knows he has a death wish, Nolan still loves Mikki and plans to get back into her life. However, though she enjoys the sex and seems to love him too, Mikki refuses to engage in anything after the resort. She admits to herself she owes Nolan the truth but is too cowardly to reveal her shame preferring to dim it with alcohol.

The third tale in the Lock and Key trilogy is a terrific ending that stars an intriguing individual who was a victim as a child albeit her profession, but the adult still hides in shadows out of fear. Mikki is not very likable yet the audience will feel deeply for her and pray that somehow Nolan can reach her. Jamie Denton provides a powerful tale that is more than just an inferno under the covers, but is an insightful realistic look at how crippling sexual abuse received as a child terrorizes the adult.
