Everything you want in a trail guide.......2007-01-31

What I like about this series and this particular guide is the wealth of useful information provided. Each hike is described comprehensively and the descriptions are supplemented with maps, elevation profiles, and mileages to key points. Plus all the usual info is provided about water, seasons, maps, etc. This gives all the information required to make informed decisions when planning a trip. A minor but nice point: the maps all are oriented with north up. Too many guidebooks provide maps with multiple orientations which can be confusing for the unwary.

I haven't read the book yet. It's being ordered. But I wanted to comment on the review by the person who lives 500 feet from the Gila, but didn't take the time to read the book title. The book is about the WILDERNESS. The Gila Forest is 3 million acres. The WILDERNESS is just over 500,000 acres. I look forward to reading the book soon.

Hiking New Mexico's Gila Wilderness.......2001-11-24

We used this book while hiking the Gila Wilderness. We are experienced day hikers and have bought many Hiking Books and have taken many hikes. This is by far the worst book from an accuracy perspective. The number one attribute of a hiking book is accuracy. This book is not accurate. From now on I will check where the authors live. The authors were not from NM and have no business writing about the Gila Wilderness.

Nearly Definitive.......2001-07-19

This is almost a definitive guide to hiking in the Gila Wilderness. I used to hike trails in the Gila Wilderness, and I wish I had had this guidebook. It has all the important information you need, such as which trails are still in use, where the trail might fade away, where the reliable water is, and how long to plan your trip for each trail.

It is chock full of useful information. For each hike, it gives an elevation diagram for the hike; detailed directions to the trail head; the best season to go; a table of how far key points are from the trail head; special hazards and considerations presented by the hike; the highlights of the hike expressed in a sentence; the difficulty of the hike; and the maps you will need. It also covers the facilities at the trail head, and gives options for side hikes. All this in addition to extremely detailed information about the hikes themselves, likely camping areas, reliable sources of water etc. And it does this for every significant trail in the Gila Wilderness! This is a significant improvement over Murray's book which gives sketchy information about fewer trails.

The tables and diagrams in this book are a model of what good guide books should contain. For example, there is a map showing all the USGS quad map locations for the Wilderness, a Map showing all trail head locations schematically, a table that allows you to choose a hike based on what type of hike you want, a detailed table of contents, and a gear checklist. The only thing it doesn't have are GPS coordinates. Of course, it might not be enough to own just this book, if the trail is very lightly used...you should bring USGS topo maps and a compass at the very least. There is a also a Wilderness Map and Visitor Guide for the Wilderness which is worth purchasing.

This book is obviously written after long and hard backpacking through the wilderness. The authors are extremely well-organized and systematic in the things they note, and in their presentation. Even so, after having been in this wilderness, I know there is much that is not in this book that is waiting for the reader to discover. The black and white pictures in the book can only convey a little of the flavor of the beauty that is there. You really have to experience this beauty for yourself. Armed with this book, I think you will be able to have a safer, and more enjoyable time while doing it.

Editorial Review killed the sale...........2001-06-07

Just a note to any of you considering this book. I was browsing for new books about New Mexico when I came across this one and thought it would be a great reference for our guests- we live within 500 feet of the Gila on a working cattle and guest ranch- when I read the editorial review- 500,000 acres??? try 3 million! So while it might be a great book about the trails of the Gila the inital information is wrong in the review. There had to have been a lot of time and effort put into this book, so I hope the books authors catch the mistake.

Outdated trail guide.......2005-08-04

I was disappointed with this guide book. The book was published in 1988, which means there is nothing about GPS in the book. I found the organization of the book to be confusing. The guide has maps of some of the trails, but they are hard to read and there is no map that provides a big picture view of the trails. Information about many trails in the Gila Wilderness is available, but would be more useful with an easy to find section providing information about each trail such as length, elevation changes, connecting trails, water availablity, etc. Several trails are cited as connecting to included trails, but no other information is provided.

One of America's finest wildernesses .......2005-02-10

The Gila Wilderness was the first official wilderness area of the United States and at about 900 square miles is one of the largest. It's also one of the most diverse with terrain from semi-desert at 4,800 feet up to sub-alpine spruce, fir, and aspen forest at a top of 10,892 feet. The Gila River is floatable during the spring melt and old Indian cliff dwellings are found in the canyons. Trout fishing in the Gila and its tributaries is pretty good, and wildlife is abundant. Hiking and solitude are the major attractions. You can walk for a week or more and never cross your path twice. The scenery may not be quite as rugged and spectacular as the Rockies or the canyonlands to the north, but there's plenty of beauty to be enjoyed.

This is an excellent guide to hiking in the Gila Wilderness Area. The author describes 25 hiking trails and routes, some of them more than 30 miles long. Each of the trails has a topo map that goes along with it plus a description. A lengthy introduction acquaints you with the history and natural history of the Gila, including the Apaches and other Indians who lived here. Appendices provide lists of birds, plants, mammals, and reptiles found in the Gila. An interesting study concerning the reintroduction of the Grizzly Bear to the Gila is reprinted in the appendices.

Possibly the most spectacular of the trails in the Gila is the Whitewater Trail which follows a narrow "catwalk" through a steep sided canyon. The catwalk was built more than a century ago to facilitate mining operations -- now long abandoned. The Three Forks area (Wilderness Ranger District) offers hot springs, cliff dwellings, and long, easy trails that lead into the heart of the wilderness. At lower elevations, the Gila can be visited and hiked year round, barring the rare snowstorm.

This is a great CD for introducing your baby to Spanish. As American parents we only speak English but want our 10 year old to learn Spanish. This CD really has a well round selection of songs, rymes and other methods of exposing the baby to the sounds of the language. We have several other CD's in Spanish, but this one it by far the best! We love to play it and dance around the living room with our little one who loves the music...she smiles and giggles as she listens to the speakers and singers on the CD.

Beautiful CD. I love that it has traditional Spanish songs and rhymes, as opposed to English ones translated into French. The info in the booklet is helpful, but I would recommend a book by Opal Dunn "Help your Child with a Foreign Language" as a much better option. Also, if you liked this CD, I believe you would also like a collection of DVDs and CDs by A LA VIBORA DE LA MAR. Check them out (they are available through Amazon at half the price I paid for them in México!!).

A 14 month old FAN! .......2006-07-15

My husband and I do not speak Spanish, but want our 14 month old son to be exposed to it at an early age so we bought an arsenal of baby spanish learning materials and this is by far the best. Our son loves it so much. He dances around to the music, focuses on the rhyme and smiles when the children speak. It's a great combination of spoken words, conversations, rhyme and song.

Here's why I love this cd:

1. It's entirely in SPANISH, there is no english translation which is great considering this cd is for babies to hear spanish and not for the parents to understand it.

2. He's exposed to more combination of sounds than just single word labeling (which a lot of other spanish for babies materials use).

3. Our son is exposed speakers of all ages on this CD, adults and kids speaking.

4. Everyone one is a native spanish speakers so noone speaks w/an "AMERICAN ACCENT".

5. The adults speak in motherese or parentese (in a soft rhythmic tone) which babies absolutely love.

It comes with a great informative booklet for parents to understand what is going on with your child's brain development especially regarding language during the first 6 months. I've read a lot about teach your infant a second language and it is put together well, citing case studies and liguinstic experts.

BUY THIS CD AND PLAY IT TO YOUR NEWBORN EACH DAY! It's a great investment for your child's future especially in California, where in the next 30 years or so Latinos will comprise nearly half the population of the state (according to several census studies).
