5 out of 5 stars Moon Hunting Re-Defined.......2006-05-23

You will forever view your hunting by the moon phases in a different light after reading this book. You will also examine and very likely modify your hunting to improve and increase your harvest successes. Charlie Alsheimer backs up his philosophies and strategies with experience and research. It is not just based on random opinions and limited field experience. This is a "must read" for the serious deer hunter!

5 out of 5 stars It has changed when I hunt.......2003-12-05

For years I chased whitetails during rifle season only hoping that the rut would be on. It rarely was so I picked up bowhunting to extend my season and give me a better chance of catching the rut. I was still sitting in a tree wait for the rut to start. Mr. Alsheimer's insights have helped me greatly. I now can request vacation time to coincide with the rut, scout an area, set up a stand, and be sitting pretty. The past two years have been great thanks to Mr. Alsheimer's help

5 out of 5 stars A real gem among rhinestones.......2002-11-25

Let's just cut to the chase: there are a lot of books out there by self-proclaimed "experts" on how to hunt the wily whitetail. Most of them are just re-hashed information that any serious deerhunter already knows (or should). The number of really interesting and innovative books on this subject is low.
In this book, Charles Alsheimer gives us some truly helpful advice--whether or not you buy the moon theory. This is a good book and well-written, to boot.

5 out of 5 stars Is It All Moon Influence?.......2001-12-17

I believe Mr. Alsheimer is on to something important regarding the autumn cycle of whitetail life, but I am not sure that he has the whole story. The book is based on anecdotal evidence and observations of penned deer. Another author, John Ozoga, writes concerning the effects of age, nutrition, social status, habitat, and population dynamics among the factors influencing the onset and duration of the rut. I do not wish to disparage these observations and anecdotes, he gives sufficient from wide ranging areas to bolster his point; and; anecdotal evidence can, and sometimes does, have the force of experimentation. But then, how would one design more rigorous experiments?

I think that Mr. Alsheimer is a biological pioneer for this theory. He has shown himself to be a keen observer of whitetail life, and has made an important contribution to our understanding of the rut.

This book is, without question, well worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Hunting Whitetails by the Moon.......2001-08-17

Charles Alsheimer coveys good usefull information on how the Moon effects Whitetail deer movement and breeding activity. The book moves along a well managed path documenting the ideas based on countless hours of research as well as observation from many an expert hunter. It covers the stages of the rut for North America and suggests times to focus hunting efforts and stratagies to use at these times. I think it's a great addition to any hunter or wildlife enthusiast's library and I can't wait to use some of the information I've learned. Two thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-03-24

This is a great book . I have all the Benoit books and dvds. I think this is the best of the Benoit books. There is so much info in these books it's not right out front , it's between the lines but be assured its there. Tracking is regional but the Whitetail info is not. I have learned more about mature Whitetails from the Benoit books and dvds than any other source. Larry's the man no doubt but Lanny Benoit may be the best pure deer hunter alive. Theres a little horn tooting in the book but as someone once said " If you can do it it ain't braggin ". I have Hal Bloods book too it is also very very good. If you buy just one book on tracking buy this one or Hals.

3 out of 5 stars Average Book........2004-11-02

The book does a good job outlining the tracking methods that the Benoits use to consistently harvest large bucks. There are also several interesting stories of deer hunting adventures within the book.

These tracking methods are regional in nature and not very useful in the midwest where I primarily hunt. For anyone who hunts from a stand, this book will be a dissapointment.

I read the book from my local library rather than purchasing it and I am glad that I did.

Overall, it is a good read but not worth the money unless you hunt in the northeast like the Benoits.

3 out of 5 stars If you are stump sitter, this book is not for you.......2003-02-04

If you track or stalk deer then you can learn a lot from this book. The Benoit's are quite remarkable with their year over year successes. However, if you are a stand hunter or hunt in private land areas that don't allow tresspassers then this book is basically worthless other than the nice pictures in it.

5 out of 5 stars Tracking Big Bucks on Snowy Days.......2003-01-28

This is one of the best and most unique whitetail hunting books I've read. The classic and now out-of-print "How to Bag the Biggest Buck of Your Life," did a great job of describing the Benoit tracking method. This newest book is even better.

"Big Bucks the Benoit Way" is an excellent presentation of how the Benoits hunt. The Benoits are almost exclusively trackers, and they base their techniques on what their vast experience has proven to work best: not on the theories of others. This independent thinking makes this a very refreshing book, and their dozens of 200-pound plus bucks prove that they know what they are doing.

This book is loaded with great photos of big bucks and the Benoits in their trademark green and black wool jackets. There's plenty of shots of sagging meat poles, the deep woods on snowy days, and the tracks and rubs of big bucks.

Most valuable though, is the great information on how the Benoits find, identify, and then follow the track of a heavy buck until they successfully bag him. While few of us will ever be so spectacularly successful using these methods, all of us can learn from this book. I've successfully used these same Benoit methods to track down and bag trophy bucks from Montana to Wisconsin.

Hunters who enjoy this book share a kinship in understanding the magic of the deep woods and a fresh tracking snow and the smoking hot track of a big buck. If you are that type of hunter, you will like this book.

Bruce L. Nelson, author of "Hunting Big Whitetails."

5 out of 5 stars best hunting book---EVER!!!!!.......2006-04-14

Alsheimer shows what deer hunting is made of with this book. You'll get top-of-the-line information on planting food plots, managing trees, keeping records on your deer, hunting deer for your setup--everything!! He not only tells you how to manage your property and deer, but also explains how deer live throughout the entire year.

Charlie Alshiemer is a photographer by trade, which is very obvious in this book. His photos of whitetails are nothing short of amazing.

His style is very matter-of-fact and easy to understand, making it that much more enjoyable to read.

This is by far the most informative book I have ever read. Buy it today; you will get your money's worth. I wish there were more books like this one on the market!! I'll give it as many stars as are available!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-09-22

I couldn't put the book down. I grew up in Steuben County in the town of Caton. Iam going to start implementing some of the things I learned in this book this year. I would tell anyone interested in learning how to grow bigger deer (buck or doe) should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Alsheimer Does it Again.......2003-06-12

Charlie Alsheimer is possibly the best white-tailed deer writer of all time. He is certainly the best deer photographer. His new book Quality Deer Managment the Basics and Beyond, is a prime example of both his talent as a writer and his brilliance as a photographer. I believe it to be his best book ever.
The book is written in Charlie's classic down home, easy to read style with easy to grasp explinations of complicated deer managment issues. He covers virtually every aspect of the QDM scene with common sense and uncommon insight. His treatment of the topic is inspirational and leaves you wanting to get out there and start practicing QDM now!
The photos chosen to illustrate the text are nothing short of spectacular. They bring the entire text to life in brilliant color and give you an up close and personal view of whitetails as only Alsheimer can.
After reading this book I picked up a copy of "Grow 'em Right" the new "how to" habitat and food plot book by Dougherty & Dougherty and am now ready to conquer the world of Quality deer managment. Now white-tailed deer book library is complete without this book

5 out of 5 stars Clears up the muddy water.......2006-09-04

I've hunted since the 60's. I got serious about Whitetails around 92'.

I talk to a lot of hunters and read a lot of books and watch videos and spend as much time as possible in the woods. Mr. Herndon's book has started to make everything gel in my mind.

As I read and think about this book I keep going over successful hunts I've had. Now, I am able to determine why they were successful and focus on more success in the future by using the stratagies discussed in this book.

There is no replacement for time in the woods and experience. But this book will definitely introduce structure and logic, to where and how to hunt instead of just instinct.

What I love about deer hunting is there is always something new to learn. And, of course, the adrenaline rush. Deer and especially Trophy bucks just aren't always predictable, too many variables, but this book will help organize all of your whitetail wisdom.

5 out of 5 stars Advanced Mapping.......2006-06-21

Finally! An excellent book I can't imagine any serious hunter not owning! Before reading this book, it took me years of mistakes and hours of wasted time in the wrong spots to hunt. It all makes sense when I compare my few encounters of success, with the great information provided in this well-written book. I can't wait to see an "Advanced Mapping" edition!!!! Please Brad, share more of this great advice!

5 out of 5 stars The Master of Topography........2006-06-13

Brad Herndon is a master at using the terrain to tag whitetailed deer. Before reading this book, I knew whitetails used terrain funnels to travel, but I did not understand how to recognize them. All of that changed when I read 'Mapping Trophy Bucks.' I can now view a topo map of an area I've never set foot on and pick out the best places for a hunt. My deer sightings have gone up tenfold!!

If you want to understand how whitetails relate to the terrain, and how to read a topographical map, this is an absolute must read!!

5 out of 5 stars Best deer hunting book I have read........2006-05-12

I have own and have read countless books on deer hunting. Most say exactly the same things. "Hunt scentfree", "Stay all day", "The rut is the best time to hunt". If you deer hunt at all this is not new information. THis book mentions this information but it treats it like common knowledge and focuses on terrain and deer behavior as it is affected by the terrain. It has the absolute best explainations of various wind conditions I have seen. In short, this book is the first to have a signifigant impact on my hunting. I can't wait to apply this information to stand location and scouting. I have hunted the same area for 10+ years and will enter the woods this year as a completely different hunter.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2006-03-24

4 out of 5 stars Solid info.......2007-08-17

I recently read the book and I did learn some new things. However, the book really pushes a scentlok suit and I would adivse saving your money. These suits are costly and not necessary. Just go out and buy scent free detergent (basspro,cableas,wal-mart etc.) and the scent proof spray and you are good. We are talking a price difference of hundreds.

I wish the author had really gone into game cameras. If you really want to know what size of deer you are hunting and when and where they are at a camera is the best tool out there. Also, he didn't mention baiting much, but if it is legal in your state do this along with cameras and you stand a great chance of taking a good sized deer.

In conclusion, this is a good book and if you are new to hunting I would strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-06-17

John Eberhart manages to take nice bucks year after year from one of the heaviest hunted and poorest manage states without having to pay anyone to hunt their land. this book is worth every minute of your time ,but if you only want to read one of John's books then make it "Precision Bowhunting" much the same info just laid out a bit nicer.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-03-31

Just as the name implies if you are bowhunting whitetails in pressured areas this book is one of the best. Theres something here for everyone but if you are a begining bowhunter this book is a must own. The author also has 3 DVDs on hunting pressured whitetails, they are the best instructional DVD's I have seen. I wish I would have had this book availabale when I started bowhunting.

5 out of 5 stars This is real hunting!.......2006-11-02

So much of what I read is like a fairy tale. Sometimes it's even good enough to make me believe and then after a few hours or days in the real woods (no fences and lots of other hunters), reality sets in again. This book doesn't promise any instance success or give any sure kill secrets like "rattle and grunt every ten minutes"...every tried that one? This is real hunting. Get out there early, put the time in, and pay attention to the details. And there are a lot of details outlined in this book.

4 out of 5 stars someone got it right.......2006-03-17

This was a great book. Finally someone got it right. not all of us hunt on ranches where deer never see humans and are feed. this book gives advice on how to hunt state lands and other populated areas around urban life. I would recommend you read this book if you want to see more deer in the woods this year .

Reviewed by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (4/07)

Steve Chapman in "Another Look at Life from a Deer Stand" masterfully weaves homespun stories, drawn from his growing up experiences in West Virginia. He uses these every day incidents and unusual events from the past and present to make spiritual applications for daily living. He compares his trail for truth and wisdom from the Bible with the "hunt" or with "going deeper into the woods."

Steve's writing is filled with subtle humorous stories from nature. He uses these stories, Scriptures and song lyrics to point the reader to simple truths and principles such as the importance of showing love to others. He relates errors in choices made on the hunt to working out answers for life at home. Steve shows how changing one's course can lead to fullness in life. His writing reflects his understanding of the unique spiritual needs of men.

The book is filled with practical pointers on life drawn from the life of a hunter. These short stories can be read as devotionals for meditation at home or during those, long quiet hours on a "deer stand." They are uplifting with a focus on God's priorities in parenting, as a husband, in business, and as a sports lover.

Pen and ink illustrations, drawn by Steve himself, add an interesting dimension to his writing as they open the windows to the creative imagination of the reader. These simple drawings can bring out an almost forgotten memory, a spiritual lesson, or a place in time where questions were rewarded with discovery.

Chapman's love for music comes through as he uses the lyrics of a song to illustrate important lessons on life, applicable to the hunter, the sportsman, husband, or father.

"Another Look at Life from a Deer Stand" is an ideal gift for the "hard-to-buy-for-man" or for any man interested in a new glimpse of His creator.

Book Description

Wildlife biologist Jim Heffelfinger has combed the scientific literature, researched the historical archives, rousted researchers out of retirement, and badgered other southwestern deer biologists for information to create the most comprehensive, accessible, and up-to-date reference yet on mule deer and white-tailed deer (including Coues whitetails) in the North American Southwest.

In this book, anyone interested in deer will be treated to authoritative but nontechnical discussions of deer evolution, natural history, human use, physical characteristics, antler growth, movement, home ranges, density, diets, water requirements, mortality rates, rutting behavior, hybridization, and management. Special attention is given to the questions that continually arise regarding deer:

Can deer see color?

What do they eat?
Can they hear deer-repelling car whistles?
How large is an average home range?
When is the rut?
What causes deformed antlers?
Are "antlered does" really does?
Do predators affect deer populations?
Do mule deer and white-tailed deer interbreed?

Deer of the Southwest will be the definitive popular guide to these highly valued and critically important animals in this region.

5 out of 5 stars practical and useful.......2007-07-24

This book presents the basics of deer hunting in an informative and practical manner. It covers such areas as scents, calling, rattling, scrapes, and ruts. One of the aspects the author describes is how important scent is in the world of the deer. I thought the information was very useful. The author has many years of practical experience and he does a good job of trying to pass on this information to beginning hunters. This is a very good resource for a new deer hunter.

5 out of 5 stars read it.......2006-10-17

I wish I'd read this book years ago. There were many times that I read something and a little light lit up because of things I'd seen in the field but hadn't really understood.

The common sense approach is great. I've never been a great believer in scent reduction because everything else I'd read/seen made little sense. I know that I smell after a bit of hiking. Why go through a brunch of stuff to get rid of every human smell? Well, that actually gets addressed. I also liked the bit about what the various deer scents mean to critters. And the stuff about calling, and rattling, and ...

I'm glad I read this book instead of watching more infomercial videos.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2005-06-06

The author relates his experience to even the most novice hunter (myself). He has a scientific, common-sense approach to deer hunting that gives confidence in his methods and makes you want to use them. His section on deer vocalizations can be confusing, but who can communicate inarticulate sounds thru plain text... However, it is fairly easy to find recordings of deer calls on the internet to clarify this matter.

5 out of 5 stars Still Available and It's Great.......2001-03-30

This book is not out of print and is still available. It is available in the hard cover edition. Excellent source for deer hunting know-how in a straight-forward manner. A book you'll refer to time and time again.

This is a great read for anyone that has wanted to hunt the whitetail. It has great detail on anything you need to know about hunting this great animal. It also has some great accounts of the Drury's and there hunts. From biginner to the seasoned this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Read.......2004-03-13

This is a solid book on whitetail hunting. There are plenty of tips and some new and interesting ideas and perspectives on hunting. Many of the photos come from their videos and frankly, some are unclear and blurred due to the conversion from video and/or poor choices of video frames (brush in the way, etc.). I think this is supposed to convey action happening but I don't think it works real well. Regardless, it was a new and novel approach and for that I still give it 5 stars. The photos that are not from video are great. If you enjoy the Drury's videos as I do, you'll love this book. I hope they'll publish more in the future.

Book Description

The story of deer management in Pennsylvania is as complex as it is controversial. From the disappearance of deer in Pennsylvania forests at the beginning of the twentieth century to the population explosion that occurred in the latter half of the century, the balance between herd size and a healthy forest has long been a difficult one. In Deer Wars, Science, Tradition, and the Battle Over Managing Whitetails in Pennsylvania , Bob Frye examines this controversy and the effect that herd management has had on all of the citizens of Pennsylvania; farmers managing deer invasions and property rights, hunters dealing with changing herd densities and ever complex restrictions, state agencies juggling the rights of hunters with the needs of commercial interests, all with stakes in the success and health of the deer herd. Now with deer harvests decreasing, Chronic Wasting Disease becoming a potential threat, and forests showing serious signs of trouble, the need for compromise from all of the players is essential, but is it possible? This well researched and engrossing book explores that question.

5 out of 5 stars Deer Wars Analysis.......2007-04-02

Well written. Shows all points of view and where they overlap and conflict.

4 out of 5 stars All We Hold Deer.......2007-01-09

The size of the whitetail deer population in Pennsylvania has been a matter of controversy for decades, and the debate is currently more emotional than ever. Here, Pennsylvania journalist Bob Frye helps clarify at least some sides of the argument. With a lack of predators, and several decades of under-hunting, deer are now severely stressing the habitat on which they depend. Frye deftly explains how dense deer populations prevent forests from regenerating. This creates severe impacts on ecosystems across Pennsylvania, and also damages the health of the deer themselves. Frye extensively examines the science of deer population, and presents the many arguments for and against management of the deer herd. He also includes very illuminating coverage of the financial damage done to farms and suburbs by browsing. Refreshingly, Frye mostly tries to let the science of deer management speak for itself. However, this book is not as impartial as it appears to be. Most of Frye's coverage is from the point of view of sport hunters. Opinions or statements from any other interest groups are introduced briefly, followed by considerably more commentary on whether hunters agree or disagree. There are several appearances of the derisive term "treehuggers" for those opposed to hunting, and Frye generally prints the statements of excessive numbers of officials and interested persons who support hunting lobby positions (which in turn makes the book very repetitive), while only offering short snapshots of all other opinions. This book is still very informative for anyone concerned about deer population issues. But Frye does not adequately cover all sides of the controversy. [~doomsdayer520~]

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ!!!!!.......2007-01-05

I TOTALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. I FEEL THAT EVERY HUNTER SHOULD READ IT. IT OPENED MY EYES AND MIND. I KNOW MANY PEOPLE DISAGREE WITH GARY AULT, BUT, AFTER READING THIS BOOK IT MAY CHANGE THEIR MIND.

This book is a must read for anybody concerned about the future of deer hunting in Pennsylvania. Bob and Spike did a tremendous amount of research for this book and the final product demonstrates this. I am looking forward to the follow up documentary?

5 out of 5 stars required reading.......2006-11-10

A facinating overview of the ongoing deer management problem faced by Pennsylvania. Mr. Frye gives an unbiased account of all sides in the debate. This work should be required reading for anyone who thinks they know everything there is to know regarding the deer issue. Well researched and thoughtfully presented. Not overly scientific with tons of statistics or jargon, it's an easy and interesting read.
