    Book Description

Human Landscapes in Classical Antiquity covers an extensive study area, taking a closer look at the relationship of the Greeks and Romans with their environment. This survey analyzes how they dealt with and constructed their surroundings in both practical and intellectual terms. It analyzes the effects of urban and agricultural development, as well as shattering some of the received histories and misconceptions of the landscape in antiquity. Included among these studies is new work on the aesthetic understanding of landscapes, the importance of hunting to the Greeks, and the Roman concern with wetlands and water resources.

    5 out of 5 stars A must...........2007-01-18

....for those of us who need to refer to our poomsae quickly. Tedeshci's texts (taekwondo and hapkido) would be a lot better, but they're big and are rather expensive.
Park and Park gives you a lot of bang for your buck, and the book can easily be stored in your briefcase, gymbag, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for beginner and intermediate TKDers.......2006-05-27

Overall great reference guide to starting and intermediate tae kwon do students. Lists the applications and effectiveness of all most aspects of TKD with slideshow pictures to demonstrate correctly. Of course, don't think you can learn the whole martial art from a book; you will need to accommodate by training with an instructor.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Reference Guide to Tae kwon do I have seen to date.......2006-03-24

This book is above par. I am a soldier deployed in Iraq and I purchased this book to continue my study while on deployment. It has accurate information and pictures to explain everything from the basics, to advanced level forms, and top notch sparring techniques. A great purchase.

    3 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2006-02-28

It is a good starting reference for those beginning about the sport. The pictures of the poomse are helpful but nothing takes the place of good instruction. I found it hard to rely on the pictures to do the forms.

5 out of 5 stars Great book with a lot of detail........2005-02-12

I am a student of Yeon hwan Park and a First Dan black belt. I have learned a lot from this man. Before I joined Tae Kwon Do, I was a wreck. However, Mr. Park helped me in becoming a better person. Sometimes I would have problems with my forms, and if I had to go home before finishing the forms, he would allow me to read a copy of his book. I read it, and I got so much better at not only my forms, but also my kicking as well. He is a great man that helps others change for the better not only physically, but mentally. He's poured a lot of his knowledge in this book, and it helps me a lot in Tae Kwon Do. Currently, I am now reading his Black Belt guide, studying the Koryo Poomse (form) and as I read on, I can see myself getting better at remembering the stances, and which direction I should be facing. If you're a student of the WTF Tae Kwon Do, or is in the sport, then I highly recommend this book. This has helped me get better at not only my forms and kicks, but also the history of Tae Kwon Do.

    Book Description

Designed to meet the needs of students who have mastered the basics and come up through the ranks of the lower-level belts, Black Belt Tae Kwon Do offers everything readers need to complete their training, from advanced sparring to breaking techniques. Following the format of its predecessor (Tae Kwon Do: The Ultimate Reference Guide to the World's Most Popular Martial Art, Updated Edition, 1999. ISBN 0-8160-3839-2), it combines a complete explanation of the physical aspects of the martial art with a full description of the philosophical elements of its training. Among the topics covered are: practice, warm-up, and advanced techniques and forms; self-defense techniques; and sparring strategies and techniques. Extensive appendixes include a special section on opening a successful Tae Kwon Do school; official rules of competition; and weight classes, governing bodies, and international organizations and associations. Two glossaries translate terms from English to Korean and Korean to English.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Reference Guide.......2007-01-30

Note: I wouldn't suggest that anyone try using this book (or its companion for the first eight forms) without an instructor. Learn your forms at the Do Jang. I find, though, that my Master shows me a form, but when I get home I find myself stuck on a detail. These books are excellent for refreshing my memory.

When I got the books I took them to show my 7th dan WTF Master. Not only did he say they were great books, but he was friends with two of the authors. That reassured me that the books must be accurate. He wouldn't recommend one if he thought I'd learn something incorrectly!

    5 out of 5 stars Helps Out.......2007-01-10

Mr. Park has created a great set of books for any Tae Kwon Do student. It has really helped me when learning or reviewing forms.

4 out of 5 stars good reference book for WTF forms.......2005-08-26

This is a good reference book to have on one's shelf. It offers good advice in the matters of teaching others and operating a quality school. It clearly illustrates (with photos and text) all the currently approved WTF black belt forms and some advanced sparring techniques. In my opinion however, most of the sparring techniques discussed do not utilise the tighter, more streamlined kicks available to the taekwondoist.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on TKD.......2005-02-03

First, you should know this book is for the WTF style and forms, not the ITF, which is different. But whatever style you practice, all told, about 40 million people in 167 countries do TKD, making it probably the world's most popular martial art.

I am mainly a karate, kung fu, and escrima practitioner and teacher these days, but I also have a black belt in TKD, and learned many of my most important lessons and basics from first studying TKD. My teacher was the great Ju Hwarn Kwark, who very few people know of, but he was possibly the greatest kicker and puncher I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot.

The book starts with a brief history of TKD, the presents two brief chapters on basic techniques, prearranged sparring, and advanced techniques. The author discusses its popularity as a sport and much of the book seems aimed at helping a prospective instructor become competent enough to open his own school.

Most of the book, however, is devoted to the forms. In fact, 142 pages of the book is just on that. So if you're looking for a book mainly on sparring and practical techniques this might not be for you, although there's a good chapter on that after the forms.

There is also a section on self-defense, and several useful appendices, including rules of competition, weight divisions, referee signs, and a glossary of terms.

One little piece of trivia. You may notice that the stepping pattern of the last form, Il Yo, follows a Swast_ka pattern--except the Oriental version of this is the reverse of the N_zi one. In fact, this symbol on maps in Japan denotes a Buddhist temple, and is a common Buddhist symbol.

4 out of 5 stars Not a black belt yet ?..........2002-01-12

...come back later, then. This books seems aimed at the black belt athlete who is considering teaching Tae Kwon Do and maybe opening his own dojan. It covers all the aspects of TKD training, from warm up to philosophy to sparring techniques. Its forms session is very thorough and clear. Every TKD instructor should have a copy inside his do bok.

      Book Description

Though intended as a supplement to Wheelock's Latin, this book is well suited for use in any introductory Latin course. All the stories in the book are based on actual Latin literature, with the stories simplified at first and made gradually more complex as the work progresses. Students will learn how classical Latin was really written as they become familiar with the works of the great Latin authors.

      1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2004-11-03

No, no, this thing doesn't qualify as a reader. Uh. Uh. Buyer beware on this one.
For the money you can buy oh so much better than this one.

I recommend Lingua Latina Familia Romana as a reader to have a ball with. It is dirt cheap and can be purchased from Angelus Press. It is one of those "soul satisfiers."
"I have yet to grasp Wheelock Chapter One" will have a righteous good time with Familia Romana. I mean "no problem." Those holding steady will really get into it.

You can't place the two next each other and allow 38 Stories to sell itself as a reader. It just won't work.

So far as learning the "god and goddess" part if that is your crises just head for Bulfinch. You can obtain it for free from Blackmask on the web in ebook, or you can buy a beautiful paperback copy from Amazon. 38 Stories isn't how to do that. The wheel doesn't have to be reinvented in bizarre new ways. You're not going to struggle with recognizing which name in Latin is Minerva once you've enough declensions to head for the real thing. Fear only fear. No problem is ahead. You'll know Minerva when you see her.

5 out of 5 stars This can be your Vini, vidi, vinci in Latin........2004-01-02

Latin is known to all as a difficult language to learn, and difficult it is, specially due to its synthetic language character, contrary to the character analytic of the modern English language, which, coming from the Germanic family of languages, in its evolution stripped itself from many synthetic features, what adds difficulty to every student of Latin who speaks English as its mother tongue. Due also to the common Indo-european heritage both languages have, we could call Latin an Uncle of English, as if in a type of patrilineal relationship that happened in some primitive peoples. And this uncle-ish character is fully preserved in the exercise book "38 Latin Stories", by Anne Groton and James May, and this is a pretty much good surprising characteristic of it.

The book is designed for English speaking students who are using the famous and good "Wheelok's Latin" as its Latin Grammar. I bought the two books together but jumped rigth away to "38 Latin Stories" and was not disappointed at all. I got in fact a lot of fun out of it and all the pleasure and satisfaction I was expecting, which means the authors did a good job. Each of the 38 stories presented are famous texts of Latin or Greek ancient authors adapted to a modern reader, and the lessons are increasing in difficulty, according to the corresponding chapters of Wheelok's. The texts are at the left side of the page, with some remarks on the level of difficulty presented and at the right side there is the corresponding and explained vocabulary. At the end of the book, there is a very good glossary with words that are also important to the understanding of the texts, all this according to strict Latin way of presentations of verbs, nouns and all types of words.

The texts are somewhat small but very interesting, both from the point of view of the stories written, all of them taken and adapted to prose from very well-known Latin or even Greek writers (Cicero, Homer, Julius Cesar etcetera). Given the idiosyncracies of the extreme irregular conjugation of verbs in Latin, and this specially from the point of view of the English speaking reader, it is advisable to have as an add-on any of the many good book of Latin verbs, as, for instance, 501 Latin verbs, by Richard Prior & Joseph Wohlberg, which has also a good verb locator.

38 Stories is a very good help to any one interested in the Latin language, but it supposes some prior knowledge of the language. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Good reading and Valete!!

5 out of 5 stars This is what you learn Latin for.......2003-11-20

Why does anyone want to learn Latin? Because they want to be able to read things in Latin: State Mottoes, those funny sayings on money, and the works of Roman authors. This book gives you the opportunity to read stories written in Latin after you have finished chapter 3 of Wheelock's Latin, allowing you to both test what you have learned, and to do what you really want to do: read Latin.

5 out of 5 stars Smooth Transition to Reading Latin.......2003-07-17

The "38 Stories" in the book, edited to form a progression in difficulty, are an excellent introduction to reading actual Latin authors. The most frustrating time in a Latin student's course of study may be this transition from memorizing grammatical forms to applying this knowledge in reading Latin. The stories are fairly short, so that students will not get bored by content, exposing them to many different styles of writing in a shorter period of time.

The passages chosen are also from famous authors' works, giving students a sense of satisfaction that they are now able to read the work of those authors about which they have heard much reference. Formatted like the more difficult Latin works, with notes and vocabulary facing the page, "38 Latin Stories" eases students into this style of study, better preparing them for reading works of Cicero, Vergil, Horace, and others. Moreover, this book does not need to be used in conjunction with Wheelock's Latin. Personally, I used this text after the study of grammar and before delving into Cicero's Catilinarian orations. Even just taking selected passages from the 38 stories is an excellent introduction to reading Latin through reinforcement of grammatical concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to Wheelock's.......2003-05-28

The "Grammar Assumed" section lets you know exactly the grammar you are working with and, assuming you are doing Wheelock's concurrently with this book, any new vocabulary is presented on the page opposite. Everything is nicely in place.

A word to the wise (which is the main reason for this review): If you choose to order from a marketplace seller, you may want to make sure you're getting the edition you think you are. There are a lot of 3rd editions out there, and the sellers don't distinguish from these and the current 5th editions.
