Book Description
The purpose of this book is to provide information on senescent cells and why they are prevented from multiplying via cell division. It includes main sections on the nature of Go/1 transition, factors promoting the cell cycle traverse and avoiding the Go/1 arrest, and negative factors arresting the cell cycle traverse and promoting the stay in the Go/1 stage. Filled with illustrations and explanations, it collectively presents the mechanisms that control the cellular aging process. This reference is a must for anyone with special interests in the biological community, and specifically the field of gerontology.
Book Description
Valerius Geist, one of North America's premier wildlife research biologists, shares his common-sense insights into the Great Plains' pronghorn antelope. The pronghorn is the last surviving larger mammal of an era when the American plains was teeming with more species of wildlife than the African plains.
Geist, professor emeritus at the University of Calgary, is a specialist in animal behavior. Antelope Country explains how the fleet pronghorn was nearly wiped off the plains along with its bigger brother, the American bison, in the late 1800s. Geist also explores the pronghorn's return to abundance through North America's voluntary and legislative conservation efforts.
Accompanying Geist's fascinating text is the breathtaking work of renowned wildlife photographer Michael Francis, which illustrates the pronghorn's beauty and complexity.
- Fascinating historical and scientific insights into pronghorns and their prairie habitat
- The culmination of 30-plus years of pronghorn research
- 150 vivid full-color photographs of pronghorn antelope
- In-depth interpretation of pronghorn behavior and its evolutionary success
Customer Reviews:
Interesting despite odd writing style.......2002-07-22
This book has excellent photography, and a decent text. The writing does suffer somewhat from a flowery style in some (not most) parts. The book is not very long, there is a lot of white space on each page, and the excellent photography takes up a lot of space. Still worth reading. At the end is a good annotated bibliography. Geist is extremely respected in this field, and he does a good job of sharing his expertise.

Pronghorns are the next species on the big-game list of many eastern and midwestern whitetail hunters, especially bowhunters.

Highly Recommended Reading.......2007-08-20
If you are just going to drive around and pop the first decent goat you see,as most pronghorn hunters do, then you probably don't need this book. However,if you want to learn how to hunt pronghorns, have a more enjoyable hunt, and score on a nicer buck, then I highly recommend that you read this book. It starts with the animals habits, goes on to locating, stalking and on thru to cooking. I've been on more than a dozen pronghorn hunts since 1982. I won't take a buck less than 3 or 4 years old - in the 15 to 16 inch range. I learn something every hunt. I learned a heck of a lot from this book. The authors really know their stuff. I'm anxious to apply some of their knowledge and try some of their tactics on next months hunt in Wyoming. Good luck on your hunt.
It was not all bad........2006-09-27
The book repeats itself a lot. I do not fell the info about the right firearms to use is accrete. Some things like speed I fell are a little exaggerated prong horn may be the fastest land animal in North America but the 60 M.P.H. of the cheetah is a little out of reach.
Is Pronghorn Hunting Really This Simple?.......2005-07-27
Since I was old enough to get my Hunter's Safety Certificate, I have been actively hunting Whitetail deer in Wisconsin and Sitka Blacktail deer in Alaska. After 16 years of hunting deer, I wanted to pursue another big game species. I decided that the Pronghorn would be my next pursuit. Despite extensive hunting experience in Southeast Alaska and Wisconsin, I did not have the slightest clue how to hunt Pronghorn. I saw this book and thought it would be a great place to begin to learn.
I would summarize this book as a cross between "everything you ever wanted to know about Pronghorn" and a "how-to" book on hunting. The book is divided into four sections. The first section, Understanding Pronghorns, covers biological and social information about Pronghorns. This section talks about eating habits, travel habits, basic history of Pronghorn populations, etc. The second section is entitled "Hunting Equipment." Not surprising, this section covers equipment needed to hunt Pronghorn including rifles, optics, clothing, and other items for muzzleloaders and bowhunters. The third section, Pronghorn Hunting, discusses various hunting strategies such as decoying, blinds, spot and stalk, as well as how to field judge Pronghorn. The final section, Hunts to Remember, is a collection of a few stories by each of the co-authors.
Parts of the book were extremely useful. I thought the section on field judging Pronghorns was very valuable. The section on hunting clothing is also very handy for the novice Pronghorn hunter. A majority of the book simplifies Pronghorn hunting with rifles to simply be glassing a prairie, see a Pronghorn, stalk it, and shoot it. For close range weapons, find a place Pronghorns will go (a fence crossing or a water hole), set up a blind, and wait. While some other methods are talked about (I thought the cow story was great. I felt like building one myself.), a huge chunk of the book is spent talking about the two methods I mentioned. To the authors credit, while they make the hunting process sound simple, they do convey the point that a lot of the time, a Pronghorn will spot you and run all the way to the next county before the hunter can even think of shooting, letting the reader know it is much more difficult than it sounds.
Personally, I felt the authors or editors could have cut out a lot of the data in the "Understanding Pronghorns" section of the book. I think the book could have highly benefited by discussing how to find a place to hunt, or rules on using BLM land. As the majority of Pronghorn hunters are from out of state, I think some elaboration on preparing and transporting the meat and a trophy head and cape over long distances taking a day or two would have been highly beneficial as well.
The book was an easy read. Despite its shortcomings, the book is still an acceptable place to start learning for the novice Pronghorn hunter. An experienced Pronghorn hunter may get a tidbit or two of information, but I would not expect they would learn much. Happy Hunting!
Pronghorn Hunting.......2003-09-10
If you enjoy antelope hunting, or if you want to, you will thoroughly appreciate this book. It provides the How To, along with the biolology, and the pure joy and mystery of America`s unique game animal. There are not many books on antelope hunting, but even if there were, this would still be one of the best. Enjoy!

THE PERFECT SHOT.......2007-01-04
This is a very good reference on the various animals. I am a Hunter Education & Safety Instructor for the State of California. This is a nice book that I recommend to our students. It shows the animals in different presentations that you may encounter in the field during a hunt. Our mission as instructors is not only to teach safety as the number one concern in hunting, but also, to deliver a clean one shot kill that is respectful and humane to the wildlife we are harvesting. This little book is one of the best that I have seen that covers this subject very well. I highly recommend it for experienced hunters as well as new hunters.

The Goats Have My Vote.......2002-10-30
If you ever wondered where to hunt for wild sheep, Rocky Mountain goats and pronghorn, this is the book you must buy. I especially liked the illustration of the bighorn ram by Hayden Lambson the cover. This is an attractive book that is small enough to fit into my hunting backpack when hunting for these critters. Pronghorn are some of my favorite animals to track, so this book tells me that Wyoming is THE place to go for Boone and Crockett-quality animals. The book was written a few years ago but it is still a good place to start when doing your pre-season planning. I bought this book with the book COLORADO'S BIGGEST BUCKS AND BULLS AND OTHER GREAT COLORADO BIG GAME because I was in Colorado.

The Inside Scoop on Publishing as a Business Not a Hobby.......2006-06-14
For many people publishing is a hobby. It's about producing an art object, a labor of love, perhaps an ego trip. But if you don't want to have a lot printed paper hanging around your warehouse, you'd better learn that publishing is a business. Once again, it's a business, and like any other there are rules.
Of course the IRS establishes the underground rules of any business in the United States. But after that there is a set of rules unique to the publishing business. This book can be viewed as three books in one:
First is the basic rules of any kind of business. This includes such mundane things as bank accounts and business licenses.
Second is the part that is directly tied to the publishing business. The common returns policy in the book industry for instance is quite different than in other industries.
Finally there is the sales aspect. Remember that the day you come out with your newest book, there are at least 600 other books published in the US on that same day. How can you possibly hope to compete? Should you hire a sales force? Should you advertise? How do you get book reviewers to look at your titles? (One way not mentioned in the book but which a lot of people do is contact the people who review a lot of books on Amazon - I know, I get contacted a lot.)
Probing Insight for Anyone in Publishing.......2006-05-12
One of the difficulties in publishing is knowing how to ask (then answer) the critical questions. These authors have been there and guide readers through the details of a publishing house.
If you've never seen a profit and loss statement (and most book authors never have), there is one inside this book and the explanation about how it works. This book is ideal for anyone who works on the inside of a publishing house to understand and be more effective in their day-to-day operation.
What I didn't know to ask.......2006-03-16
I've worked on the editing side of publishing for years and am expanding my horizons into the actual publishing side of the business. There were sooo many questions I had and even more I didn't even know I should have that PUBLISHING FOR PROFIT answered in a clear and concise way. I suggest anyone interested in the publishing industry read this book, from self-publishers to authors for a better understanding of how the publishing business works and how to work within the publishing business.
Knowledge is key and this books has plenty!.......2005-11-14
Its very hard for me to read "how to" novels, because I am afraid that somethings may be misleading. However, when consulting with this text, I was very pleased with the authors knowledge of the subject and how each topic was handled and presented to the reader. I had confidence in the information and would recommend this to anyone desiring to expand their knowledge in this field!

Perhaps the best publishing book I've read so far.......2005-10-12
Since venturing into the publishing world approximately a year and a half and eleven titles ago, I've read quite a number of books about publishing, from the "The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing" to "The Self-Publishing Manual" to "1,001 Ways to Market Your Books," plus lots of other books about typography, the printing process, graphics, publishing contracts, etc. etc. I also belong to two publishing groups (I highly recommend Yahoo Self-Publishing for newbie publishers). In short, I believe that I've managed to pick up quite a bit of information within a relatively short time. Nevertheless, I gained an incredible amount of knowledge by reading this book by Thomas Woll.
First, it's written in a very clear and easy-to-read manner. So many non-ficiton books make for very dry reading, or use such heavy language that you struggle to understand what they're actually say, or use an annoying overly-chatty style (at least that's the case in some of the publishing books I've read). The writing here flows so well that this is one of the few non-fiction books that I literally devoured - and went back to read again, and then yet again, without getting bored or feeling the desperate need to take a break after a short time.
Second, the information in the book is incredibly useful and important. For me, just the first four chapters would have been enough, and more than worth the price of the entire book. Yes, I know about cash flow and creating a budget, but the clear way that Woll presents the subject, and the fact that it's all geared towards publishers' needs, gave me a whole new perspective on things. As a matter of fact, I've already redone my budget and publishing plan for the next three years based on his advice!
The chapter on management was also extremely useful to me. Many of the other chapters were not applicable to me at this stage of the game (being a small one and a half person publisher outside the U.S.), but they will surely be of interest to anyone building up his publishing business beyond one or two titles.
In short, if you are serious about publishing, this book is a MUST for your library. It will help clarify all of those nasty money issues that no one wants to think about while they are pursuing their dreams of publishing the next great bestseller, and teach you how you can do that while keeping an eye on the bottom line. Highly recommended.
