Book Description
The major recent advances in our understanding of the regulation of gene transcription have stemmed largely from our ability to quantify and characterize mRNA. This book describes the methods used for the analysis of RNA, for DNA transfection into mammalian cells, and reporter technology for mapping transcription control elements. Other techniques used in cloning and characterizing transcription factors and in detailed analysis of regulatory sequences are provided in the companion volume to this book, Gene Transcription: DNA Binding Proteins. The Essential Techniques Series books are designed to provide you with immediate access to the protocols you require every day. These handy pocket-sized manuals are easy to carry around, and conveniently spiral bound making them ideal for lab bench work. Written by experienced laboratory researchers, each book in the Essential Techniques Series gives up-to-date, tried and tested practical information for the life scientist. For each key technique these books:
- introduce the most commonly used methods,
- explain the advantages and disadvantages of the methods, and give advice on which procedure to use,
- provide easy to follow step-by-step protocols, with experimental notes and tips on where to pause, plus information on safety and suppliers.

From the authors of the most phenomenally successful training series of all time comes a second huge collection of ice-breakers, brain teasers, problem solvers, and session closers that have been chosen to train for the skills today's companies are seeking. Included are games that teach employees how to continuous learning; exercises that enhance motivation, effectiveness, and speed in providing quality customer service; and activities that foster team-building. Customer Reviews:
Helpful resource that could be improved.......2007-05-14
The best thing about The Complete Games Trainers Play is its sheer size. Actually, it isn't nearly as big as some reviews imply. It is really around 1000 pages, not 2000+. And for some reason, a significant percentage of those pages are left blank. But even with that caveat, this is still a sizable resource.
If you are willing to devote 30+ minutes to finding an activity, you are sure to find one (or five) that are ideal for your training event. The fact that individual "games" can be removed from the ring binder is also helpful. This allows you to use the activities without carrying the whole book around, and to easily photocopy sheets for individual participants as some activities require.
However, there are some significant downsides. There is no real way to find appropriate activities without flipping through virtually the entire book. A large number of the activities aren't very good. And, most of the book is in a strange "typewriter" typeface that makes it look like it came from 1972. (Oddly, there are some pages which are randomly sprinkled through the book that use a different, more recent-looking typeface.)
To really upgrade its usefulness, Games . . . would benefit from taking a leap into the computer age. In other words, along with the printed book, a computer CD should be included. This could feature a good, searchable index, which is now lacking. It would also make it possible to print out games, and modify handouts on the computer to your organization's needs.
I've never bought any other resources like this, so I can't say if this is better or worse than others. I can say that in spite of the steep price and the drawbacks, I'm definitely glad I purchased it. It was very useful to me, and will be again in the future. However, there are a few simple steps the authors and publishers could take to greatly improve it.
Trainers Dream.......2006-11-03
This is a great tool of Trainers. Keeping your trainees engaged throughout the training is always a challenge. This tool give creative ways to assess retention of information. The games are great and the administrative forms and suggestions are wonderful.
Lots of games here.......2004-12-08
People love playing games a lot more than listening to lectures; this is indisputable. I didn't like all of the games listed here, but so what. Several I found helpful and intend to use.
Not Impressed.......2003-09-30
Although there is a lot of information packed into this book, I was very unimpressed with the layout and visual design. It looks like it was typed up in 1970. The graphics are ancient and the layout is just one big binder with no cross-referencing or indexing available. To find a useful game, you have to sift through hundreds of pages. It really is a shame, as there are some clever games here to loosen up an audience.
Frankly for this price, I expected something a bit flashier and filled with reproducibles that I would want to copy and hand out. The way it looks now, and with it's unwieldy format, it's going to sit on my shelf.
If I hadn't spilled water on it, I would have sent it back for a refund.
The Complete Games Trainers Play.......2000-05-23
This book was helpful in planning an in-house managment training session. The book is divided into sections making it easy to locate games targeted at specific areas. The book is actually a 3" 3 ring binder. It is a large book, however, it does contain a wealth of information.

Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT quide for personal fitness trainers!.......2007-09-10
I purchased this book 1.5 years ago from a convention I attended in Philly. I have seen Douglas Brooks speak on several occasions and I highly recommended any personal fitness trainer to seek him out. This book is comprehensive, easy to read, and written according to the guidelines of the ACSM and NCSA (and ACE and other well known organizations). I really liked that he has "copy approved" worksheets and forms throughout the book to use with your clients. It is a bit nore expensive than other PT books, but as they always say, you pay for what you get. Enjoy!

Not bad, but certainly not complete.......2000-12-09
The IIS4 test was my final test for MCSE certification. It was one of the hardest. I feel it was harder than the TCP/IP test. I used the Complete IIS Training Course and while it was informative, it was lacking. No one book is really a complete study guide. I used exam cram, rapid review, a Microsoft course book, transcenders flashcards, adminstering IIS, fast track IIS, and an accelerated IIS book. One of the best items for study/review of the IIS4 test is the study guide produced by [troytec] It has a summary of need-to-know facts and then over 200 Q & A which are good prep (when compared to the real test). If this was indeed the "COMPLETE" IIS training course, it should have been more depth.
Complete... the name is correct........2000-05-03
I borrowed this book from a friend and found it very complete. You can read the book, go through the multimedia and even take the test all in one purchase. I can't wait to finish it and take the live test!

Still a very popular programming language because of its speed and portability, C is used worldwide in a variety of programming projects. Teach Yourself C in 21 Days combines a basic tutorial of C with a working compiler to offer a quick tour for the experienced programmer and introduce beginners to the language.
Early chapters outline the role of the C programming language in today's computing and get you started on using C with the bundled Borland C++ 3.1 compiler (which allows you to build 16-bit C programs in both DOS and Windows 3.1 that will also run under Windows 95/NT). The tutorial format breaks up the task of learning C into 21 manageable lessons, starting with basic keywords, variables and data types, statements, expressions, and operators. Early sections also introduce the basics of building functions, the foundations of structured programming, flow control, and console I/O.
The trickier parts of C, including pointers and memory management, come after the basics. The authors take care to show the pitfalls of C while giving the reader plenty of hands-on examples. In the third week of tutorials, more advanced topics, such as linked lists and sorting algorithms, appear quickly along with a tour of the built-in functions of the C run-time library. Overall, this tutorial provides everything you need to know about the C programming language to get started (though it does not touch on Windows GUI programming and relies instead on command-line examples). --Richard V. Dragan
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2002-05-18
This is the first programming book I have read. At every stage of the book it has clearly explained the current topic and the chapters flow nicely together. The author seems to have been able to get into the mind of the beginning C programmer, and answers all those nagging questions. Every question the book raises for me is answered. I am really enjoying this book, I like its style and approach, and best of all it is actually teaching me something. Well done.
The only book you'll need.......1999-08-18
I highly recommend this book and also the follow-up "Teach yourself Advanced C in 21 days". With these two books, you shouldn't need any other basic C books. As a C programmer since the early 80's, I've found no better books.
Highly recommended.......1999-05-01

Solid fundamentals of C with excellent examples and problems.......1999-03-10
An excellent text which explains C quite clearly. The authors' concise writing styles make it easy to understand. Difficult topics like pointers are given good explanations. Sample/practice problems with answers, and debugging exercises provide a practical way to test your knowledge.

Save your money.......2007-04-09
I found this book to not be very useful. It was lacking in providing many words and phrases that would have been helpful during my visit to Turkey.
just enough but just old fashioned.......2005-01-06
well, I didn't have the chance to see the whole book, however I took a look at the first few pages on amazon.com and all I can say is that the Turkish correspondences in this book are so old fashioned that you can hardly find anyone speaking "this" Turkish on the street! Turks can indeed understand you when you speak with these expressions but don't think they will get what you want to say immediately. Maybe a more contemporary one would help better.. plus I hated the cover art, Turkish people no longer look like that..
So Far My Favorite Phrase Book..........2002-05-17
...if you are going to Turkey, and you're only going to get one book about the language, this is the one I'd recommend.
My oldest son is marrying a Turkish girl in Istanbul, and while we're all going to join them there for the wedding, I'm trying to learn enough of the language to be able to talk a little, and understand a bit. My second son just wants to get by, my third son is somewhere in between. We are all using this book!
For me, it has been a starter book (though In Flight Turkish was my first and best, since it had a CD to help me comprehend the spoken word). For my two younger sons, it has been a way to learn the essentials for it seems if you are going to another country, you should be able to say some basic things in the language of the country. Each of them has their own, to stick in a pocket or backpack and carry around, stateside and in Turkey.
This book is small (maybe 1/2 inch thick, 6" x 4" in size (or so) and structured in a way even a (brilliant) ten year old finds easy.
A great beginner's book, a getting by book, a getting around book.
A must-have book for any beginner!.......2002-04-20
I have this book, and it's the best purchase I ever made! It's very simple and direct in its format, and has a really excellent explanation of how to pronounce the words and letters. In fact, of all the Turkish language books I've tried out, this one explains the pronounciation the best.
It focuses on only what is needed to know, if you plan to visit Turkey. If you need a book that will get you started, but don't want something that makes the language more in-depth than you need for your preliminary study -- this is the book to have! Plus, it's really small, so you'll be able to carry it with you in your purse or backpack or briefcase with ease.

More mystical hogwosh than good science.......2007-10-14
I have enjoyed Nourishing Traditions, by Sally Fallon, so I bought Cowan's book b/c it is advertised as a "companion" to Fallon's book. Fallon's book is an objective assessment of the often misleading information out there about nutrition. Her book is clearly presented and backed by copious notes. I was hoping Cowan's book was equally objective and convincing. Well, the best chapter is the one written by Fallon!
Cowan's book is weakened by his reliance on the theories of Rudolf Steiner, guru of "anthroposophy". Whatever contributions Steiner may have(or may not have) made to the field of education, his scientific theories are just goofy. Cowan bases his entire book on Steiner's four bodies or spheres of activity, which correspond to the four "kingdoms" or "elements" of body as forwarded by the medievalists 7 centuries ago. Okay, this stuff is for fairy tales! If the Steiner slant had been made clear on the back cover, I would not have purchased the book.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to live a long and healthy life........2007-06-27
This is a wonderful addition to the already popular "Nourishing Traditions". It takes it a step beyond and shows how to heal yourself in all aspects of your life. Wonderfully written, I recommend it to anyone who wants to feel good and live a long and healthy life.
The Fourfold Path to Healing:.......2007-05-20
This is an enlightening book with a need for the reader to keep an open mind. I had borrowed this book from a friend and I felt it was worth buying. It gave a different approach to nutrition and more information on nutrition then what I ever learned in nursing school. I will say, some of the other info. tends to bend towards TM of which I do not believe in. Buy this book and learn a lot!
This Guy Gets It .......2007-02-17
This is an amazing book. Cowan understands how our bodies work. Great Book!
Extremely Important Book!.......2007-02-07
I just attended the Fourfold Path to Healing conference this last weekend in Ann Arbor, Michigan where Tom, Sally Fallon and Jaimen McMillan taught us so much about the human body, nutrition, and medicine--in what ways these all work together. This was one of the most important conferences I have ever attended in my life. (I am an organic farmer). It really rounds out the information I have been applying in my life on the farm from Sally Fallon's book, Nourishing Traditions. N.T.
I highly recommend Tom's book because on so many levels, it teaches us how to take care of ourselves and others without invasive "therapies" such as cutting, drugging, or radiating, Additionally, with Sally's research and advice on nutrition, I feel we can truly be as healthy as possible in spite of the many challenges we face, whether socially, economically, internally, or environmentally and so on. We can do it!
Please do yourself much, much more than a favor, and buy, read, study and apply the information in this book! A must is also Sally's book Nourishing Traditions.
As for comments Tom makes on vitamins such as C, it is the synthetic vitamin C that one needs to avoid. Some of the best ways to get vitamin C is through powdered fruits such as rose hips, acerola berries an amalaki. Of course, the first way we should try to get all nutrients is through our food! This is one reason why we eat.
