Essential reference for freshwater biologists.......1999-05-17
As a zoology student working in a country where very little has been published in limnology, I found this work to be both essential and fascinating. Even on a student budget I couldn't resist it. The broad coverage of groups, the keys, and the illustrations make this work a tool during working hours and a book to dip into for sheer interest after hours. I wish I had known about Pennak when the older edition covering the insects as well was available. If you like puddles and what lives in them - this is the book for you.

Review of How to Know Freshwater Algae.......2001-04-20
This is a fantastic book for those interested in identifing algae to a Genus level. I work as an aquatic biologist for a private microbiological testing and consulting firm, and I use it everyday. The book offers very good discriptions and lots of helpful illustrations. The one thing I don't like about the book is that it fails to include size ranges of the organisms. I would highly advise anyone who deals with freshwater algae on a regular basis to pick up this book. It will definately come in handy!!

Book Description
Chemical Dynamics in Freshwater Ecosystems reviews the processes that control the distribution and impacts of chemical substances discharged into freshwater aquatic environments. The book focuses on the relationships between chemical emissions and the resulting ambient concentration in water, sediments, fish, benthos, plants, and other components of real aquatic ecosystems. Hydrodynamics, sediment dynamics, chemical fate processes, bioaccumulation, and food-chain transfer are major topics discussed in the book. Case studies and models are used to illustrate how quantitative predictions of chemical dynamics and behavior in the aquatic environment can be made. Chemical Dynamics in Freshwater Ecosystems is an excellent reference for aquatic toxicologists, wildlife toxicologists, wildlife biologists, environmental chemists, governmental regulators, environmental modelers, consultants, and students studying the effects of chemicals on aquatic environments.
Book Description
An introduction to Western riding. Using clear photographs and illustrations by Elayne Sears, Strickland teaches safe horse handling procedures and basic riding techniques. Trail riding instructions and complete guide to Western tack are also included.
Customer Reviews:
Easy Reading.......2007-09-29
I bought this book when I made the change to western riding and it gives a great over view of Western Riding from the tack to riding and horses. A great book for the beginner.
Basics.......2003-08-28
For a book that is titled 'The Basics', there was way too much jargon with no explanation. For example, there is a paragraph that tell the reader to 'learn the difference between the two types of hands, the fixed and the following', but then there is no explanation of the differences or even what either means. It also references different parts of the horse without explanation, such as the 'withers'. I did finally find an appendix that explains some of the terms, but it is never referenced in the book, and it does not explain all of the terms.
Good and complete book for the beginning western rider.......2000-02-11
I loved this book! I have just bought my own quarter horse and read many interesting things in this book that helped gaining more knowledge about western riding, horses, tack and training. I think it is a very good book for people who are starting out with western riding and/or are thinking about buying their own horse.
Book Description
The first paperback edition of a popular standard guide to horsemanship, from first mount to competitive riding, plus all the key facts about horse care, feeding and grooming, English and Western tack, and more.
B & W photographs and line drawings throughout.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT BOOK.......2002-02-27
this book is great! it has a little bit of everything in it from riding to common horse problems.
Covering many topics. a little verbose and rough........2001-05-29
I have to say it's really "basic". I didn't mean that it's worthless. But it's not worth the price. It suits the one who is interested in horsemanship but doesn't have any experience in riding . The major drawback is the pictures or graph are not enough for the reader to make a precise and vivid image of what the author trys to present. And this is quiet helpful for novice riders.isn't it?
I learned at my own pace ,it felt like a trainer was there.......1999-10-18
I'm a twelve year old rider. I just started to learn to ride. I wanted to learn to ride better and faster since my riding lessons are only once a week. I think that the book helped me a great deal. I got to learn at the pace I felt comfortable with.
A great informative book for all age riders!.......1999-04-17
This is an awesome book teeling just about everything you need to know about basic riding! The index is full of pictures about tack, brushes and parts of the horse! It seems like you have a trainer right there with you helping you along the way, going at your pace! It is a great book for all!
Excellent Book for Instructors or Novice Riders........1998-11-27
I read this book just to see if I was riding the correct way because I taught myself. I learned a lot and it has helped me understand my horse better. It would be a great book for a Novice Rider or new Instructer. Anyone will benifit from reading this to improve their skills!
Book Description
The upsurge of interest in versatile ranch horses, cow working, and reining will make this book popular with western riders. Truskauskas-Knott, whose equestrian books are noted for their clear and easy-to-follow instruction, explains how to train the more advanced western exercises, whether for reining, stock work, pleasure or trail. She advocates re-evaluating cues and aids to make sure they achieve accurate, timely results and provides step-by-step illustrated lessons for teaching spins, stops, lead changes, etc. Training is more of a mental endeavor than many people realize, and this book encourages trainers to think about what they are telling their horses and to understand how horses think and learn.
Customer Reviews:
A top pick for trainers who already know the basics and wish more.......2006-05-26
If you have a green horse of any age that you want to train for western events, here's the book for you: a title which goes beyond elementary lessons to provide step-by-step instructions on how to finish a Western horse. Black and white photos follow details which tell how to warm up a horse, correct common problems, use ground training to build a foundation, and more. A top pick for trainers who already know the basics and wish more.

100 Words Every Word Lover Knows.......2007-10-17
Word lovers know or should know almost every word in this book. It's really a book for people who don't love words but think they want to. The format is good and the price is right. Maybe it's a good stocking stuffer for a young person who likes to read and write.
100 Words.......2007-09-27
Some words are wonderful to know. Others are once-in-a-lifetime kind of words and they should not really be included as one of the 100 words. And some of the examples they use by quoting actual text from old writings do not make these words any more useful in the modern context. Over all, not very useful.
A Great Little Book.............2007-01-27
I love words. There are so many ways in the English language to convey thoughts, emotions, opinions and allegories. I love using new words and whenever I come across a newly discovered term, I do my best to retain and reuse. This book is great because it lists the word, shows how to pronounce it, provides the definition and uses the word in lucid contexts. The price of this book is rather cheap, but the quality is not. Great to build or reinforce a wonderful vocabulary.
A lovely little treat.......2006-03-15
This is an inexpensive and enjoyable little book that you can absorb in an afternoon, but spend months returning to enjoy. Some of the words are common, some are uncommon, and some I had never heard before.
Also from reading this, I realized that I had been using some words improperly, which was also a great experience.
So, what word do I think that everyone should know?

January 1
Todd told me earlier he had plans for the evening, and I thought he was going out with another girl. I never guessed the plans were with me!
We finally got to talk about "us," and we both said we wanted to be the kind of friends who were friends forever.
Then Todd stopped at this intersection. He pulled me out of the van, and when we stood in front of the headlights, I realized it was "our" intersection!
I was laughing and telling him this was crazy; and then he gave me this bracelet! It's so beautiful. I love it! It's a gold ID bracelet with the word "Forever" engraved on it. That's when he told me that no matter what happened in the future, we would be friends forever.
I'm smiling so big right now. I've never felt like this before in my whole life-.
A uniquely personal look at the hopes, prayers, and dreams of Christy Miller-
Customer Reviews:
inspiring.......2003-05-20
I can't wait until her next book comes out...I've heard there's going to be another book...I hope there will be the 3rd book in the college series ended so soon...awww What happens when Todd opens his wedding present, huh? and what about Katie and Rick...She has to write another one, she just has too.
Not as Good.......2002-11-30
I didn't like this book as much. I own every Robin Jones Gunn book available and i was sadly disappointed with this book. I found it kind of boring. I read it really quickly and got very little out of it. I also didn't like that this thin little diary had 5 years of her life in it. It missed way too much. The only part i really liked was when she was talking about the meaning of her 'Forever' bracelet
COOLI BOOK!!!.......2002-06-05
This book is about Christy Miller, only deeper. It shows her life over five years in high school and in college. It gives a unique outlook on teen life with a Christian view. I couldn't put this book down! I would reccomend this book for all Chistians and people who are looking to be a Christian. This is a great way to start the Christy Miller series or to read along with it. JUST READ THIS BOOK! IT'S REALLY GOOD!
These are the best books!.......2001-10-25
Hello everyone. Robin Jones Gunn's books on Christy Miller are absolutely the best books I have ever read. When you read them, it's as if you've crawled inside the book and you're there with her everywhere she goes! Todd is such a great character, and he's the exact type I've dreamt of marrying ever since I got book 1. I cry when she cries. I laugh, and trust me, there's plenty to laugh at. I have a smile on my face during every book, and I definitely recommend every single on of them. These books are sweet and romantic, but realistic and give you a Biblical perspective on the way life should be. I have actually grown closer to God through these books. Especially the college series. Thanks, Robin! You're the best!
A READER FOR FLORIDA!.......2001-09-29
Hey ya'll...I think that these books are the most incredible books i have ever read. I have read all 12 of the Christy Miller Series and 1 and 2 of the College Series! I instantly Fell in Love with Todd, and I pray that the guy I marry will be just like him. He has the qualities every guy should have! I wish that my life was just like Christy's and I can't wait to read the 3rd book of the College Series! These Books have helped me in my life more ways than I can count! I love them and I can't wait to read them over! The things todd says to Christy are so sweet and caring, it makes you want to cry. I commend Robin Jones Gunn, she is an amazing writer. I like books that I can sit down in my room, and just get lost in a book. I couldn't put them down. I havne't been able to do that with a book in a long time! I encourage everyone to read these books, every one of them, and open their hearts to learn from them. God spoke to me in so many ways while i was reading the college books the most. I learned so much and my relationship with god was grown immensly. I look up to christy...and I try to be more like her each day!

Ginny Aiken, Ranee McCollum, Jeri Odell, and Debra White Smith
A Bouquet of Love contains four romance novellas set in contemporary America, each featuring the gift of a very special bouquet. Strong biblical themes echo through each story as readers learn of God's forgiveness, the importance of communication and honesty in marriage, seeking God's will through reading his Word, and the importance of a person's internal qualities. Romance fans will enjoy the diversity of themes and the distinctive styles of these four gifted writers.
Customer Reviews:
Four worthwhile short reads from some really talented authors.......2007-09-11
"The Wrong Man" by Ginny Aiken finds Brad and Carrie in a comical relationship based on mistaken identity. Carrie is fighting her attraction because Brad has made it clear that he's not looking for a serious relationship. But as they get to know each other, Brad realizes that his plans and God's plans may be slightly different. This is a neat story with good romantic build-up, but the end comes too abruptly.
In Renee McCollum's "His Secret Heart," Gwen and Adam have worked next door to each other for years. Adam has a crush on Gwen, but she's only seen him as a "computer geek". Now, that she is developing a relationship with a mystery man from church, she is beginning to see Adam in a different light. Will Gwen choose the man she's never seen? Or the man she is now seeing with new eyes? This is a terrific story about not judging a book by its cover! It inspires me to take a deeper look at the people in my life instead of relying on superficial impressions.
Jeri Odell's "Come To My Love" chronicles the tale of Harrison and Korby, childhood friends who are reunited when Harrison is widowed. Korby still sees Harrison with innocent eyes, but Harrison only sees his mistakes and how unworthy he is of Korby's love. Will they overcome the obstacles that face them, or say "goodbye" for good? This is a truly sweet story of how God's plan for our lives doesn't cease to exist because of our detours. It also does a really good job of encouraging the reader in the fact that God still uses broken people.
"Cherish" by Deborah White Smith tells the story of Belle and Joe, a married couple in a rut. Belle feels less than cherished, and decides to leave the relationship the same day that she learns they are expecting a child. This is a beautifully told story about forgiveness and making an effort to enhance your relationships beyond flowers and gifts.
A Solid Short Read.......1999-05-04
This book was great for on the run readers. The novels are short and to the point, but are still genuine and portray a message. I finished the book in two days while traveling. Check this one out!! =)
Book Description
For a decade now, the authors have been conducting interviews for Hungary's Oral History Archives, with the children of those Hungarians - national heroes, as they are generally seen today - who were imprisoned for their involvement in the 1956 revolution. The vast body of material that has been collected, and is now at the disposal of sociologists, psychologists and others in the academic community, forms the basis of this volume.
This is a documentation of memories of the revolt and, more particularly, its aftermath. The virtually spontaneous ten-day uprising exerted a lasting effect on the fates of the families of the more than 20,000 who were imprisoned and 229 executed by the régime in the harsh reprisals that followed the crushing of the revolution (the last of them as late as the early 1960s), with active police surveillance extended to tens of thousands more. This intimidation, and the attendant social and economic devastation that it wrought, bore especially hard on the psyches, upbringing and education, and hence the subsequent opportunities and life courses of the children who grew up within those families.
The material is grouped by theme: e.g. the effects on communication within families, changes in social status, how relatives and friends reacted, and what sorts of problems these children encountered in pursuing their studies, in trying to assimilate into society as adults, and in relating to those fathers who did return. In an appendix, the editors present detailed biographies of the people most directly affected, offering an unparalleled glimpse into the fates of those they interviewed. The documentation includes letters that the children wrote to their imprisoned fathers.
Customer Reviews:
a poignant memoir.......2003-05-17
Culling over forty lengthy interviews, historians Zsuzsanna Kõrösi and Adrienne Molnár show us in detail how the lives of the children of those repressed after the 1956 Hungarian revolution were wrested from them, figuratively speaking, over several years. Thrust into poverty and degrading manual labor, barred from secondary school, stigmatized by friends and society, these children arguably suffered more than their executed fathers. Kõrösi and Molnár are both research fellows of the Oral History Archive at the Budapest-based Institute for the History of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. They explain how this research grew out of the Oral History Archive's brave efforts in 1981 (when still illegal) to gather oral testimonies from over one thousand "witnesses of twentieth-century Hungarian history" (p. 2). Given the campaign orchestrated by communist authorities thoroughly to expunge the memory of the revolution and stigmatize it as a "counterrevolution," the Oral History Archive's work has proved invaluable in preserving Hungary's historical heritage. Carrying a Secret in My Heart consists of nine short chapters, a bibliography, biographies of the forty-two interviewees, and their poems and sketches produced as children. This highly readable memoir is apt to educe latent childhood memories in readers, especially those who have themselves lost parents or siblings, as they "bond" with the increasingly familiar interviewees.
The chapters trace - through the words of the interviewees - the several stages of the childrens' experience, from the revolution and their memories of it, the sudden poverty and heavy responsibilities during the father's imprisonment, patterns of communication within the family, and social stigmatization; to the adjustment after the fathers' release from prison (those who did survive), the public exoneration of the victims and their families in 1989, and the adult childrens' present-day reconciliation with their pasts. The age of the interviewees varied at the time the revolution first broke out (the student demonstration of October 23, 1956). Four of the children were over ten years of age, sixteen were between seven and ten, eight were between four and six, and fifteen were below four years of age (p. 6). While the younger ones retain only vague visual memories of red stars and statues being desecrated, the older ones recall participating in marches and standing in long queues for hours - often at 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. - to buy bread and milk. One respondent remembers accompanying his mother to the hospital (one hopes because she lacked a babysitter) and saw bodies writhing in pain, missing legs and arms. One man's intestines were hanging out (p. 14). The children intuited the revolution's end by the shift in mood at home. Some recall their mother's pleas that the father emigrate to save his life. Most cannot remember their fathers' actual arrest because they were either not present or too young to remember (p. 21). A few can still hear their fathers' last words as they were taken away. "You are the man of the family now; you must help your mother!" one interviewee, Tibor Molnár, was told - a heavy responsibility for a ten-year-old (p. 22).
_Carrying a Secret in My Heart_ is well worth reading and will interest not only historians, but political scientists, sociologists, and psychologists as well. ---Johanna Granville, Stanford University

Not Bad For a Firstimer!.......2006-12-15
It would be fare to say that I know the author extremely well. ;-)
So, I'll let the 'book jacket' itself do the talking:
"A book for Everyone Who's Ever Been in Love, And for Anyone Who Would Like to Be...
When one is truly in love, he does not speak merely from his mind--no matter how clever a thinker he maybe...
One does not speak merely from his lips--no matter how eloquent a speaker he may be regarded...
When one is truly in love, we find that he never speaks from the mere surface of his soul, but from the very depths of his heart...
What you hold in your hands is not merely a 'book'. What you hold in your hands is the innermost part of a man in love. What you hold in your hands is the deepest part of a soul, drawn from the most earth-shaking time in a man's life. The time when a man bares all, gives all, and dares all--for love. You hold in your hands the most intimate part of himself that a man can share with a woman.
You hold, My Secret Heart..."
