2 out of 5 stars stupid book.......2007-07-30

Ive gotten about half way through this book and really doubt if I can finish it. I learned way more just reading articles off the internet about the CO2 to O2 ratio and the importence of keeping CO2 in your system. To me this is a non-sensical book good for anyone that has no real breathing issues...I strongly recommend finding something else to read.

5 out of 5 stars Choosing Life through the Breath.......2007-04-03

We all know that we cease to be alive when we can no longer breathe. Dennis Lewis, however, understands that we cease to truly live when we are not consciously choosing to connect with our breath. Living the fullest expression of ourselves requires expanding our self knowledge, along with the expansion of our breathing. Mystics through the ages have understood this concept, and Lewis illustrates it beautifully in his book. You will learn ways to support your spirit, mind, body and heart through conscious breathing, and thus be much better prepared for change and challenges in your life.

5 out of 5 stars The One Thing That Will Never Leave Us..........2006-10-10

Our breath is the only thing that is with us from beginning to end...the breath is who and what we are...the breath is interconnected with Spirit and every time we breathe in and every time we breathe out, we are breathing in and out the One Creative Power that creates all of life out of Itself...

The breath does not judge. The breath does not condemn. It is the breath's job to sustain us at all times. I dare you to sit and breathe deeply for one hour. I betcha can't do it. If all of us decided to just spend one hour breathing deeply in and breathing deeply out, this world would be transformed in a day...it really would...because deep breathing calms us, centers us, awakens those parts of us that we have stuffed, repressed, or have just wanted to forget.

I've gotten to about 26 minutes of deep breathing and I cried like a baby. I had such stirring memories - future as well as past - as to what life could truly be about. Just like the book says, when we free our breath, we free our life.

That shallow little nose and mouth breath we do is not breathing, just like those Chicken McNuggets and that extra large coke is not sustenance. We need to spend time nourishing our bodies, our minds, our hearts, and our souls in ways that replenish us and awaken us to the beauty that just sits and waits for us to finally notice...

Breathe!

I mean, really, really breathe...it is a gift...it is the gift.

Peace & Blessings.

5 out of 5 stars breathing specifically for you.......2006-04-27

Lewis demonstrates how to find breathing practices most suitable to you rather than assuming there is one best way to breathe for everyone. Choose from seven different self-directed ways of working with breath. Want to reduce the stress load in your life? Breathing properly is one of the best places to start.

5 out of 5 stars everything it promised.......2005-09-29

I found this book helpful for stress relief, more conscious breathing and better sleep. It's well organized and easy to absorb. Aside from the practical applications it lays out, the book also offers good insights on why we don't breathe properly and the negative effect poor breathing can have on the body and on overall health. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars breathe deeply..........2006-07-07

This is basically a calender-a date on each page followed by an inspiring quote, a short page long (or less) essay/parable/real life story, a short prayer and an affirmation-rendering this book super-easy to read no matter how super-busy you are.
Although God and Jesus are referenced many times in this, and his other-Dare to be Yourself book, it shouldn't affect the healing these books are offering-anyone could read them-it's a live and let live deal.
You may want to keep some highlighter pens on hand. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Another beautiful addition to Alan's work.......2006-03-10

I love anything by Alan, and I lemjoy this book for its daily message format. I pick it up at the end of the day or when I feel a spiritual boost, turn to the date and read the passage. He never fails to uplift my spirit and help me get back on track. This would make a lovely gift.

5 out of 5 stars True Daily Inspiration.......2005-10-07

I've been reading daily meditations for many years but this one surpasses them all. I bought a bunch for those friends and relatives who are interested and they rave about it, too. Top-notch, first class book. You won't regret your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Still good the third time around.......2003-06-14

I hadn't looked at this book for a few years and recently started reading it again for the third or fourth time. There are some days when the reading doesn't really touch me and other days when it's exactly what I need to hear. I've attended three short seminars given by Alan and find him to be a loveable, real human being. I stayed around after one of the seminars and went out with a small group to have dinner with him. There are some 'teachers' who seem to don a mantle of self-importance and wouldn't consider breaking bread with a lowly seminar attendee. Alan is certainly not one of them. So, five stars to Alan and all of his books.

2 out of 5 stars A pablum approach to heart-centered living . . ........2002-10-21

This book came to me highly recommended, so I was doubly disappointed. Cohen does better in his other books, but this one is "spirituality lite," big time. The format is standard for this genre: A page for every day, with a catchy title. A quotation to spark your interest . . . his sources are varied, and this part is okay, though not particularly inspiring. music, contemporary writers, scriptures, with the most prevalent being "A Course in Miracles." Then comes a thought-provoking paragraph or two . . . and here the disappointment takes hold. Cohen tells obviously-created stories which he claims come from his personal experience, or trite examples from the lives of famous people. Sometimes he quotes stories from world religious traditions without attributing his sources (as on June 12 where he tells the well known Buddhist tale about the man and the tiger, stopping to taste a strawberry as he falls).

Next comes a prayer/meditation. These are good. If you do buy the book, turn first to these italicized sections near the bottom of each page. May 7, for example, "Spirit of Love, open my heart. Help me to be at peace with all my relationships . . . " Then an affirmation, and these range from excellent (as on May 7, "I create peace with my loved ones and myself" to the banal (July 10 - "God's timing is perfect.").

Save your money. Choose another book for your daily meditations.

ASIN: 1878086952

Book Description

"I live with a stable of nightmares," Martha Mason writes, "but hope keeps them in harness."

Some might wonder how Martha could have clung to hope at all. In 1948, on the day of the funeral of her adored older brother Gaston, a quick victim of the great polio epidemic, Martha was struck with the same dreaded disease.

After a year in polio hospitals, she was sent back to her home in the village of Lattimore in the cotton-growing hills of western North Carolina. She was completely paralyzed, with only her head protruding from an 800-pound yellow metal cylinder that breathed for her. Doctors told her parents that she likely wouldn't live for more than a year.

But the doctors hadn't counted on Martha's will, or the hope that drives her still.

An avid reader, she dreamed of being a writer, and after finishing high school in her iron lung, she went on to nearby Gardner-Webb College, then to Wake Forest University, where she was graduated first in her class and elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

After college, Martha attempted to begin a career as a writer, dictating to her mother, who had devoted her own life to Martha's care. But her father suffered a massive heart attack, leaving him, too, an invalid. Her mother, caring for both, had little time for Martha's dictation.

Technology revived Martha's dream. A voice-activated computer allowed her to write without assistance. She got it early in 1994 in a time of great despair. A devastating stroke had altered her mother's personality, causing her to turn on Martha, and eventually to revert to childhood. Martha had to become her mother's keeper, and to run a household from her iron lung.

To help her deal with the crisis, Martha began writing about her mother's selfless love. As she wrote, she found herself telling her own story, without self-pity or sentimentality, and with her usual courage, grace, and humor.

Breath will make readers laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. It is a breath-taking memoir, a powerful testament to the human spirit, and it proves Martha Mason to be a writer whose voice is likely to be long remembered.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring book, but not at all soupy.......2006-07-17

I recently saw a documentary on Martha Mason's life and wanted to know more about her, so bought the book. She tells the story of her life, before polio and after. It is an inspiring story (you think you have problems? how'd you like to live in an iron lung for over 50 years!) -- but it is so matter of fact and straightforward. One might wish for a few more medical details, but that is not the story she wants to tell us. The people who care for her come alive that you get to know them too. A keeper.

5 out of 5 stars A book you Can't put down!.......2003-06-24

This is a wonderful book. I absolutely loved it. I grew up in Shelby and today I live not far from Lattimore and I am just in awe that she has lived her life in this iron lung and kept her sanity!

This book brought out a gamut of feelings, laughing one minute, to sadness,to tears. As I read I think what a terribly sad life, but she makes it like it is perfectly normal, no big deal, she just has a tiny obstacle to get around.

It is impossible to put this book down when you start reading it , so be ready for no sleep till you finish the book. She is an excellent writer and even though I have never met her in person, she is a beautiful lady! My 15 yr old son has the book now and this will be a book we will keep forever and cherish it.

I bought a copy and sent to my Sister-In-Law and she read it in one day and called saying how much she loved it.

I highly recommend it. I think a TV movie of Martha's Life would make a wonderful Hallmark movie and hope some producers out there will get hold of the book and think about that.

5 out of 5 stars She's My Hero.......2003-03-22

Buy this book. Read it. When you are finished with it, give it to a friend. Then you will have behaved like Martha Mason. She has taken her life, read it over, and acted on it by sharing herself with others. This is the quintessential Martha. She has given so much to her long list of friends that they regard her as extraordinary.

I am one of the lucky ones, as I have known Martha all my life. That makes this review, then, unabashedly biased. No matter, because everything Martha writes will generously enrich your life. And she writes well. I was able to wrestle the book away from my father, to whom Martha had given an early release copy. We all were taken away by her writing style, not to mention the stories of early Lattimore, her brother Gaston, her helpers in the home, and many others.

Not unlike Martha, her favorite doctor has been an inspiration to me for many years. And not unlike him, Martha has been my hero for at least as long. (At least she listens to my stories and jokes!)

Buy this book. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A Profile in Courage.......2003-03-13

In Breath, one learns of Mason's survival of 54 years confined to an iron lung as a result of contracting polio at the age of eleven. This courageous woman survived beyond all odds and has excelled beyond belief. She graduated first in her class (at all levels), mastered a voice- activated computer, cared for an invalid mother, and has written this unforgettable memoir. Perhaps her highest achievement though is chronicled in the chapter on "My Fair Helper". Ginger, her longtime caregiver, arrived at Martha's door illiterate and a "diamond in the rough". Martha taught Ginger to read and write and polished her into the gem she is today.
Her account of her brother's death from polio in 1948 and her illness which followed is heart-wrenching. The care and support provided by her parents inspires awe.
She takes the reader back to the 1940's and her pre-polio days growing up in a small village in rural North Carolina. The childhood adventures of this "spunky" little girl and her friends remind one of "Tom and Huck".
This book is destined to become a best seller, and one can only hope that there will be another close on the heels from this author.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Beginning Yoga Book Out There.......2006-02-23

In my opinion, this is absolutely the best beginning yoga book you will find anywhere. It is not a book about getting into perfect pretzel shaped postures; it is not a book pushing Eastern philosophy; and it is not just another fad exercise book. This is a serious, well balanced, and gentle introduction to yoga. It's focus is on teaching yoga movements and postures in a gentle way that is accessible to anyone, and on introducing yoga as a means to improving your overall sense of well being and health.

"Yoga for Your Life" is organized into a set of lessons that guide you gently from simple movements towards the more familiar postures you might see in other books, but at every step of the way, emphasis is placed on adopting the postures to your body. This makes yoga accessible to anyone no matter what their age or physical fitness level or body type.

The lessons are beautifully illustrated with color photos of real people performing the movements in each lesson. There are no dry stick figures; there are no yogis in loin cloths; there are no unrealistic models. Just real people demonstrating each sequence of poses.

One of the most helpful features of the illustrated instructions is the way one's breathing is linked to specific movements of the body. Many yoga books describe this in words, but "Yoga for Your Life" has incorporated the breathing very clearly into the photo sequences of the lessons. By linking one's breathing to the movement of one's body, the whole experience feels more purposeful, and focused.

Throughout the book sidebars and other commentary introduce you to the ways in which yoga can be integrated into your life beyond just the physical exercises, but as with the postures, emphasis is on adopting what works for you.

Having tried several introductory yoga books, this is the one that really clicked with me, and enabled me to actually make yoga part of my life. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a beginning introduction to yoga book.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Find!.......2001-11-19

I wanted a book that would show me how to do the yoga postures. One that would focus mainly on the postures and less on the meditative aspects of yoga. I found both in this book. It has easy to follow step-by-step instructions which give you alternate forms of the posture if you are unable to achieve the posture at your range or level. The book gives you weekly workouts to let you know how long to try things before moving on to the more difficult postures. I have recommended this book to friends and family alike. A Great Book.

5 out of 5 stars Dean Ornish, MD on YOGA FOR YOUR LIFE.......2000-09-21

"Yoga is the most powerful system of stress management, but it is also more than that: it is a system for transforming our awareness and quieting down our mind and body to experience inner sources of peace, joy, and well-being. I highly recommend YOGA FOR YOUR LIFE as a practical and clear guide to getting started in yoga."

4 out of 5 stars A nice companion book to class instruction.......2000-07-01

This book is beautifully illustrated with real pictures of people holding the poses that are taught. The only issue I have with this book is that it is NOT a replacement for a real-live instructor. (I believe the authors even state that this book is not a replacement.) Also, there are is no instruction on how to modify the poses for specific injuries or how to take the pose to a higher level.

All of the flows and poses are pretty basic/intermediate. There are some inversions that are demonstrated.

This is a great basic instruction book for your own practice at home. I definitely would recommend this to any one interested in yoga, as long as they have a qualified instructor

5 out of 5 stars A Technicolor Yoga Book for the Body,Breath and Mind.......1999-09-06

This is one of the most beautiful yoga/art books currently on the market. When I first looked at the cover, I knew this would be a visual treat for my eyes. However, the cover did not tell me that the pages inside would contain a wonderfully sequenced practice for the body, breath and mind. As a teacher of yoga and one who incorporates many styles in a class, this is one of the books that I refer to for ideas on yoga sequences done in a "softer and gentler" style when other styles seem inappropriate. Viniyoga is a practice that allows everybody to do yoga, not just the young, the strong and the flexible. It is known as one of the most forgiving forms of yoga and the Pierces present the basic concepts in an easy to follow pattern. The only problem that I found with the book is that there is so much information crammed on each page that a beginner's mind may wander about before finding the essence of the posture. The models and the settings are visually stunning, the instructions are easy to understand and the use of arrows to describe the flow of the breath is very helpful for the student. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a gentle practice that requires minimum time and a willingness to try.

5 out of 5 stars Embodying the change we want to see in the world.......2007-06-26

This book is a life-changer. After working on it as an editor, I have recommended The Trance of Scarcity to a number of people, all of whom later made a point of thanking me personally for the rich wisdom they found here. Victoria Castle's Somatics-based guide to breaking out of the trance of "Not Enough" by adopting a greater attitude, both mentally and physically, is embodied brilliance. Her sassy wit, together with hilarious illustrations by Obadinah, make the book a real joy to read. Read The Trance of Scarcity and you'll surely experience greater ease and wisdom around the big money, prosperity and generosity questions. Oh yes, and joy is allowed. Buy this book for everyone you know!

5 out of 5 stars An invitation to come out of the trance.......2007-05-23

This book is a MUST for anyone who wants to connect with the SOURCE and the TRUTH of abundance and prosperity!

5 out of 5 stars The Trance of Scarcity.......2007-02-24

An inspiring yet practical book. The author has a humorous self-deprecating style as she shares her own journey of moving from scarcity to abundance. This book made me aware - again - that I am surrounded by abundance but, in my busyness, am so often blind to it. The book flows beautifully making the ideas easy to comprehend and to apply immediately. I am buying a copy for each of my five children.

Good book on changing one's perspective.
I especiallyl liked the reminder about expectations.

5 out of 5 stars gear shift from 'magical thinking'.......2007-02-21

Victoria Castle's book is an elegant and educated exposition of the Universal Law of Flow, but she's too grounded to call it that!.It is extremely readable, filled with robust contagious optimism and wisdom- from her own life and 20 years of coaching others. Whilst none of these ideas are new, she puts into a working framework the over-hyped messages of The Secret, and The Law of Attraction, and shows us the somatic ('in-the-body') practices that allow us to connect to our own real lives and play our part in the dance. Such a relief from all the 'magical thinking' that abounds out there - you know the kind of stuff - write your wish list and affirm it daily, and if it doesnt show up it must be your unconscious beliefs holding you back...sorry to be cynical, but it takes more insight than that! Victoria's book brings that insight. It is practical and inspiring, and gave me a great framework to understand where I get blocked, and how to shift my own body and thinking, to unblock and return to my natural generative state - a state of curiosity and connection that we can all experience, a state in which we feel naturally abundant and connected to life and our fellow beings. I urge you to go out and get this book - it will get you out of the trance and into the dance!
PS I was lucky enough to get to one of her workshops, just one week after finishing the book, and she is as wise and approachable in person as she is in the book - nice to see people who walk their talk...

Book Description

Craniosacral therapy is based on the belief that functions of the human system are maintained and integrated by a biodynamic force known as 'primary respiration,' or the breath of life. Found in the brain, spinal cord, and bodily fluids, this rhythmic pulse promotes healing and health. Written for students and practitioners but accessible to lay readers, this text presents the fundamental concepts and techniques of a method that redirects the cerebrospinal fluid to areas of imbalance, thus enhancing overall health. Volume One covers both the history and conceptual ideas fundamental to Craniosacral Biodynamics, as well as the more complex structural and tissue relationships.

4 out of 5 stars Sills has amazing vision, yet cluttered writing.......2007-01-13

I am new to the work of Craniosacral Therapy. I'm in the beginnings of a training program, doing some required reading, and this is one of the books.

Franklyn Sills is in love with what he does, there is no question about that. He writes with lucidity and sheer reverence for the forces of Life and how they unfold within is. At times his writing is quite moving and can actually take your breath away.

I believe he wrote this book with the intention to simplify and consolidate many of the concepts within Craniosacral Biodynamics and the Osteopathic work of people like Will Sutherland and Rollin Becker, and while that intention does come forth, it isn't executed all that well. This book ends up feeling much like an old textbook that needs lots of revision by someone other than the author yet with his supervision.

I say that because the concepts brought forth by Sills, some of them difficult to comprehend from the beginning, are cluttered and made more obtuse by his writing. Some of the content feels as if Sills thought of 20 different ways to say the same thing and simply listed them all sequentially. I think the book would be much shorter if those '20 ways' were simplified into one or two.

Also, much of the terminology in this field could stand to be simplified, there are too many words used for the same thing or very similar concepts, and that isn't by any means Sill's fault or doing alone, but it certainly shines through in the text, creating further confusion.

I would still suggest buying this book, as it creates a depth of discussion that few others in Craniosacral do, but I would also suggest picking up Michael Kern's 'Wisdom in the Body'. It explains the same concepts in a much simpler way, appealing more to the layman and explicating with out being obtuse or excessively flowery with language.

5 out of 5 stars A real gem.......2002-06-07

I love this book and the way Franklyn Sills expresses the osteopathetic and craniosacral principles with holographic theory and trauma skills. He very effectively interweaves models and principles associated with the Breath of Life and new models of working with shock and trauma. The emphasis on the fluids and fluid tides brings a balance to the more structurally oriented craniosacral texts. I am a psychotherapist and find the principles articulated in this book extremely helpful in working with shock and trauma as well as accessing more vibrant health and creativity.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing..........2001-10-03

Being a strong believer of Cranial Work, I was very excited to see a new book on the topic. However, I was disappointed that this book is basically just Sutherland's Cranial Osteopathy and Upledger's CranioSacral Therapy repackaged. It's very disappointing that as Cranial work is getting more and more accepted, so many authors are simply reinventing the wheel and calling it their own. The initial work of Sutherland and the subsequent developments of Upledger have yet to be substantially changed or enhanced by any other authors in the cranial field that I have found. Until then, my recomendation is to stick with works by Sutherland and Upledger.

5 out of 5 stars Trust in the Potency.......2001-08-27

Cranial Sacral Biodynamics is a wonderfully arranged book on the subject of Cranial Sacral Therapy which includes some excellent sections on Trauma Skills and clear illustrations of the techniques presented. Franklin's work marks a progression in the art of Cranial Sacral reading materials. Cranial Sacral Biodynamics is easily accessible to the beginner and will remind the most skilled practitioner of the essentials of this amazing technique. Most practitioners of Cranial Sacral work are familiar with the dedication and pioneering work of Upledger in bringing this much needed therapy to the forefront of modern healing. Those who have studied with Upledger or those who are new in arriving at this system of healing will be delighted with the ease and adeptness of this volume in conveying the foundations necessary to learn Cranial Sacral Therapy. I myself have been a student of the authors teachings and can attest to the power and effectiveness of his use of the inherent treatment plan and the safety of allowing the clients body to build Potency while re-establishing free/balanced flow of the Cranial Sacral system. The techniques presented on Focusing and Centering are essential to Bodyworkers of all disciplines. The skills contained within this study will help a practitioner establish a sacred healing presence which will enhance communication, healing efficiency, ethical standards, and allow the unfoldment of the Breath of Life in their professional practise and personal living.

Prepare to have some of your greatest fears laid bare in this collection of riveting, and often terrifying, "cautionary tales from the limits of human endurance." Based on interviews with accident survivors and the medical specialists who treat them, veteran outdoor writer Peter Stark offers mostly fictitious accounts (there is one based on a true historical incident) of people caught in life-threatening situations. In Last Breath, he thoroughly explores what happens to the human body and mind during drowning, a long fall, burial beneath an avalanche, hypothermia, dehydration, mountain sickness, the bends, malaria, scurvy, hyperthermia, and contact with a poisonous jellyfish. Stark packs enough historic and scientific information and page-turning suspense into each chapter to make them all fascinating and useful. And he answers some perplexing questions in the process, such as why those suffering from acute hypothermia often rip off their clothing in an effort to save themselves.

No, Stark does not have some unresolved death wish--he readily admits that he fears death. But he also understands that the fine line between life and death actually entices outdoor adventurers to risk everything for the chance to explore their own physical and mental limits. In fact, it is exactly this close proximity to death that makes the experience come alive for certain individuals with the overriding desire "to strip away the superfluous, to remove the protective boundaries between that thing you call a self and something larger." These are the stories of those who crossed the line. --Shawn Carkonen

Book Description

Sudden, extreme deaths have always fascinated us-- and now more than ever as athletes and travelers rise to the challenges of high-risk sports and journeys on the edge. In this spellbinding book, veteran travel and outdoor sports writer Peter Stark reenacts the dramas of what happens inside our bodies, our minds, and our souls when we push ourselves to the absolute limits of human endurance.

Combining the adrenaline high of extreme sports with the startling facts of physiological reality, Stark narrates a series of outdoor adventure stories in which thrill can cross the line to mortal peril. Each death or brush with death is at once a suspense story, a cautionary tale, and a medical thriller. Stark describes in unforgettable detail exactly what goes through the mind of a cross-country skier as his body temperature plummets-- apathy at ninety-one degrees, stupor at ninety. He puts us inside the body of a doomed kayaker tumbling helplessly underwater for two minutes, five minutes, ten minutes. He conjures up the physiology of a snowboarder frantically trying not to panic as he consumes the tiny pocket of air trapped around his face under thousands of pounds of snow.

These are among the dire situations that Stark transforms into harrowing accounts of how our bodies react to trauma, how reflexes and instinct compel us to fight back, and how, why, and when we let go of our will to live.

In an increasingly tamed and homogenized world, risk is not only a means of escape but a path to spirituality. As Peter Stark writes, "You must try to understand death intimately and prepare yourself for death in order to live a full and satisfying life." In this fascinating, informative book, Stark reveals exactly what we’re getting ourselves into when we choose to live-- and die-- at the extremes of endurance.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling in the Extreme!.......2006-12-04

I read this book in nearly its entirety on a flight home from NY. What a compelling can't-put-down read! I HIGHLY recommend it! This book contains fictionalized tales of real life experiences that humans have gotten themselves into when pushing themselves to the limits in the dangerous outdoors. There are chapters on hypothermia, heat stroke, dehydration, falling, drowning, high altitude sickness, avalanche, scurvy (a particularly nasty chapter), predators, malaria, and the bends. It's one of those extremely rare books that really make you appreciate the comfort of sitting in those cramped, poorly designed aircraft chairs.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't stop reading.......2006-02-02

This is not a book I would have normally bought. I picked it up at a Bookseller's Convention where publishers were giving away books. As a lover of books, I couldn't turn this or a couple dozen others, down. But this book is fascinating!

Last Breath is a collection of short stories fictionalizing the events--the why, how and results--when man pits himself, sometimes unwittingly, against the elements. For instance, the first story titled: As Freezing Persons Recollect the Snow: Hypothermia, follows a young man's journey from the moment he makes the wrong decision that exposes him to a snow storm in the Colorado Mountain to. . . Well, I'm not going to tell you the end. Each story is different, but each intriguing. Stark goes into detail on what happens in someone's mind and body as they face deadly element. Call me ghoulish, but I couldn't stop reading.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing work.......2004-02-03

This book is one of the best I've read in a long time. To the first reviewer, he clearly didn't understand this book, as is shown by the following reviews.

The author is brilliant, after the chapter on thirst I went to the fridge and drank two sodas right away. The writing is intelligent, you don't get the feeling he's trying to dumb it down to the lowest common denominator. There is just enough medical information to make you understand what is going on physically, but not overwhelm you.

I highly, highly suggest you read this book.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Non-Fiction.......2003-12-02

I first read a chapter of this book in paddler magazine and the way Peter Stark described the drowning of a kayaker (Chapter 2: A River of One's Own) in detail right down to the amounts of oxygen remaining in his lungs at various periods of time. The entire book is written as en ewcellent blend of fact and fiction and while the scenarios are not true they are composites of true stories, and some of Stark's imagination, which gives them a realism that pure fiction can't match. The facts Stark gives are sound, he obviously did his homework and he even gives a bibliography so you can check out some of his sources. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get outside.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book.......2003-01-31

This book just blew me away. A wonderful blend of fact with realistic, fictional stories to make the points really come across. I couldn't put the book down until I finished it straight through the first time I read it. It's so well written that I've been able to enjoy rereading it several times.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly effective.......2006-12-09

I have read several books by S.N. Geonka and his followers, but none really gave me insights into the actual technique. It is explained in detail here. I understood it,applied it in my practice and it has definitely given me new insights into this particular style of Vipassanna meditation. It was intense, a lot of emotions materialized and my sensitivity to bodily sensations is makedly increased. I've have been practicing "noting" as well as "just sitting" for a while. Both techniques have been effective also, but this Vipassana technique is more refined.

The book stated a strong case for practicing the precepts of Buddhism in addition to just meditation. The explanation and tie in to the laws of attraction and Kharma were very clear and well thought out.

Any one interested in Vipassana should try this book. Anyone interested in integrating meditation and Buddhism into their lives, but have yet to make the jump, should also try it.

"It's been said that we learn more from our mistakes than our successes - and I think that's true - but only if we eventually have success; otherwise we just keep making the same mistakes over and over." ~Marshall Glickman

Learning to take care of our bodies by eating correctly and exercising seems a true journey all on its own. When you decide to incorporate a style of meditation into your life then a whole-body Vipassana might bring you more peace of mind. It is a sensation-based style of meditation.

Marshall Glickman has a beautiful writing style and his ideas connect perfectly with the modern reader who may or may not be familiar with meditation. His ideas are presented in a way that makes meditation come alive. I used to think meditation was complete stillness and lack of thought, but there are ways to focus on sensation that bring you to a deeper understanding of yourself. Some of the intellectually intriguing aspects of this work include:

The Power and Pleasure Principle
The Biochemical Basics of Pleasure
The Neurochemistry of Karma

There are chapters filled with instructions on how to meditate, but the real highlights of this book are the insights into living life effectively and understanding how our bodies function on the chemical level.

"Focusing on sensations puts us more directly in touch with what's motivating us, while at the same time helping to free us from the storylines which tend to obscure our feelings. In this way, greater awareness to our sensations increases our emotional sensitivity." ~Marshall Glickman

If you have trouble settling into a meditation session, do yoga first. It helps your body to work out all the extra energy that might keep you from sitting still. You can also meditate while reclining in bed or while sitting in a chair. You don't have to meditate in a guru-style seated position. I normally meditate while laying flat on my back after an invigorating yoga practice. Some of the most blissful happy places I've ever been have been after doing a Chakra Yoga workout. I finally understood the place meditation could take you. I like imagining colors inside my body and working with sensations and the release of negative thoughts. I've noticed that when I do meditate I think more clearly and can solve problems more effectively. When I don't meditate, chaos creeps into my life.

After reading this work, you may also enjoy Tobin Blake's "The Power of Stillness: Learn Meditation in 30 Days."

5 out of 5 stars Glickman fills a contemporary Buddhism explanation niche.......2005-03-27

"Beyond the Breath" is written by a fellow baby-boomer in a style and vernacular completely comprehensible to those of us in the West. As such, Marshall Glickman fills a modern Buddhism explanation niche.

For example, the First Noble Truth of Buddhism is, "LIFE IS SUFFERING" which I'm sure this sounds completely dismal and off-putting to the average Westerner - a real hindrance to investigating Buddhism further. Most people I know would probably respond with, "Well, isn't life basically good? Isn't life what you make it?" This is hardly something that Tony Robbins or Dale Carnegie would say. So I suspect that to the average Westerner, "Life is SUFFERING" seems like an exceedingly negative premise.

The author, however, puts a subtle spin on the First Noble Truth which, in my opinion makes Buddhism a lot more appealing. The author suggests, "Something is always a bit off," or "Things are never just right." I prefer, "Life is good and we can make it better." This positive marketing is good for Buddhism.

Marshall supports traditional Buddhist notions on materialism by citing a study that found that any pleasure we get from owning things hinges on one-upmanship - hardly a source of lastly fulfillment or happiness. There is also an interesting section on the experiences of organ transplant recipients that dramatically demonstrates the body-mind connection.

Another truly useful and powerful distinction I learned from the book is that detachment is accepting what is, not dissociating from or ignoring what is. So paradoxically, acceptance leads to detachment.

Like the author, I too have completed several 10-Day Vipassana courses as taught by S.N. Goenka. As a result, I can truly say that "Beyond the Breath" is especially helpful in that it points the reader towards a powerful and personal experience of transformation, which is the essence of Buddha's message. You can read a book on swimming while sitting comfortably in a deckchair then making up a story about it, or you can read a book swimming and jump into the pool.

"Beyond the Breath" is a must have for anyone interested in improving the quality of their life using the proven, non-sectarian, and ancient technique of Vipassana meditation. The information in this book will undoubtedly result in many more people "jumping into the pool." Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, insightful guide to meditation and mindfulness........2005-02-24

This is a practical and insightful guide to meditation as a practice
and mindfulness as a way of being. There is also abundant theory in the form of a spritual and psychological approach to life.
This is a very clear, personable and well written book which offers a diverse array of insightful quotes from many interesting sources.
My only complaint is the picture of buddha on the cover because I believe that this image limits the very universal and secular insights that are presented so well in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Job well done Marshall!.......2004-09-01

Its very hard for me to write this.

I practiced vipassana for seven years and talk about some highlights in my review of John Coleman's book elsewhere on my review list.

Marshall does a really good job of explaining vipassana and many of the points he makes particularly on morality and ethics - which are frequently lost in the hunt for "groovy feelings" - are exactly the points I would make.

I have very fond memories of goenka-ji and sitting with him - his discourses are masterly (though as one with "the gab" too I distrust eloquence without active right action being manifest in the speaker - something hard to judge without knowing the teacher intimitly.)

I take issue with simplistic "no-self" positions - I am not an individual - I am more like a flock or a school of being within - neither am I viable without the matrix of fellow beings of which I make a part outside this skin. But what I am does not have to be ugly, futile or absurd and deciding to look for this ugly "truth" and "surprise surprise" finding it within the (locally) "unconditioned state" does not impress me.

The high buddhist state is not a summit of insight - it is merely an apex in a multidimensional polygon of many apexes - several of I have visited and returned in a worse state than Messner after conquering Everest alone without oxygen. The are not ultimate truths - they are evidence of the shape and edges of reality - my place is somewhere in the middle.

I no longer formally meditate nor look for peak experiences (my poor old mind is a bit done in after "The lap of god watching him build the world" (where there is no chaos - nor random neither "noise" only "signal" throughout) followed a year later after five nights without sleep and before being taken to the nut house speachless and almost without movement - by "Sitting in the place of god being the builder of the house" (Best left to Him/Her/It)

Since then I have visited only one lower peak this spring "Where the world is just getting ever so slightly better each instant rather than ever so slightly worse" otherwise known to buddhists as the buddha in the Pure Land (not talking about chanting meditation here folks nor any formal meditation.)

What do I do and have I done these last years since stopping formal meditation as no longer fruitful?

I follow harder precepts.

#Always try and tell and do the truth.

#Take complete responsibility for your actions. (this trumps the former)

#Watch desire and aversion like a cat at a mousehole. (this is essential for the other two)

Now I sweep creation with the contemplation of the ebb and flow of desire taking place perhaps of the ebb and flow of breath - and sweeping the entire conscious sense plane - or rather letting it sweep itself as directed by desire/aversion in its new responsible grown-up guise.

I live through a very great deal of (objective) suffering mine and others'. I live through it cleansed and encouraged and not downhearted.

I shout and get angry - I drink and sometimes am drunk - but always with compassion (founded in responsibility) to the fore. I bicker enthusiastically with my latin wife.

I have acess through my exploration of desire to a number of past lives - my task is to ease them with new truths unavailable to them.

We have moved on 2,500 yrs since the bodhi tree - truth has evolved - no one man can hold it in this era - we all have to have our little piece and to proceed with scientific method and knowledge of both our evolution and of reality.

I am diagnosed (you should know) with Type one Bipolar disorder at times 'Schitzo affective') It is like having a wooden leg or a scarred face - no handicap to wisdom or its promulgation. Mind you "Just because you're seriously ugly doesn't mean you get to be in the Fellini Movie"

May all beings share my blessings - may all wake up to find themselves part of the tending and gardening of the Pure Land. that is always in the making and never perfect. (The adjective "pure" - otherwise evil - is tempered by the noun "land" unable to be an absolute - just "fine stuff".)

"Perfection" is the new evil

"Sin" (getting it wrong) is the new prayer

"Groovy Feelings" are the new gold of Mammon".

Waking through the mall and watching yourself buy just something you need - is the new meditation. (More correctly these things are "contemplation")

Messner has "discovered" the summit of Everest in the true and human way - as part of our home planet - no need to go there again - any apex is "the edge" - Damma is about the Middle - that has not changed since the new moon in June 1956 when I was born. Nicely in time for this new dawn.

See my other reviews to be sure I'm too crazed for my opinion to matter! (Arf!)

(I am a member of no group or cult though I find myself articulate and "initiate" in all I've come across - good or bad)

Now Marshall - go back to that very nice man with the big stick. - Who said what he did was "wrong" and if so what's the problem? - it was effective and deeply compassionate it seems to me. Perhaps you should ask him to do it again so you can see why it affronted you so. Personally I'd have done it with my tongue and you'd have liked it even less.

Don't crave or dread "The end" the world is not a movie that you consume.

"What about the suffering in Africa?" - we CAN and must fix it - if necessary with concrete things and systems like tanks (hopefully the type that hold water), policemen and the banning of secret off-shore banking. (My "practice" is four hours a week with "The Economist" - small print, deep samadhi!)

If in doubt walk in nature.
