Great Text For Environmental Design Management ! Flawless!.......2006-10-13
I live, study and work in the New York Tri-State region and this book is pretty great because the author also lived, worked and studied in the same region. Whats good about that? The Human Development and Expliotation is our region is very diverse and often connects directly with other prominent regions around the globe. The author basically covers alot of legalities, origins, design principles, and field work analysis really well.
This was one of the easier to read text in my classes, not because it is written in laymans terms, but he writes the ideas in a clear concise manner and covers alot of material with great efficiency using (the best I've seen in any enviro-engineering text) superb diaghrams, pictures and charts.
As a whole I felt the text demystifies alot of what this field is about so I usually recommend it to other non-environmental engineers, planners and designers that I come across in my school and work.
The book is expensive but I felt it was one of those few (if any) books you'll ever buy in college that is worth every penny.
This one is a keeper!
GREATEST ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING BOOK.......1999-02-05
GREAT!!!!!
94 S: Excellent Resource, Environmental Health professionals.......1998-10-15
I have just reviewed the ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND SANITATION 1994 SUPPLEMENT, by Joseph A. Salvato and Joe E. Beck. It's a great resource for professionals seeking a broader vision of environmental health practice areas and where we are heading. Prof. Beck obviously put a lot of work into conceptualizing this volume and working with the distinguished contributors. It shows. In particular, I found the first chapter, Stakeholder Focused Interactive Planning (SFIP)by Joe Beck and Steven Ison to be a brilliant piece on the desirability of (indeed, the imperative for our profession to) include the public in problem-solving and planning. I have used this process and mediated disputes ranging from siting controversies (haz. waste facility siting in Massachusetts) to determining future land use options at Hanford in the nuclear weapons complex. I commend both Beck and Ison for their clear portrayal of the paradigm as well as the steps one undertakes in conducting such planning. Federal government engineers and planners have been learning the hard way about what happens when decisions are made without public input and without regard to the values, interests, and expectations of so-called stakeholders. At Hanford, more than $20 billion in appropriations has yielded preciously little in terms of actual cleanup: one may wonder if Congress will continue to appropriate the substantial $6 billion a year for the Dept. of Energy's Environmental Management Program without consensus of the public on #1) the benefits or #2) the ameliorated risks from present expenditures. Current stakeholders come from a wide range of public interest groups and they do not get along particularly well. They do not have current programs or projects that reflect the use of the SFIP and researchers should be asking themselves, "Why not?" (Resources for the Future [RFF] has an on-going research project that tackles public participation in environmental decision making).
I would also like to comment on Ch. 6 "The Institutional Environment: Biosafety" by Darly Rowe. The importance of Dr. Rowe's conclusion that we must rely on consultation and working with the client on biosafety issues cannot be overstated. I also like the typology which places biosafety issues in proper perspective. We seem to be deluged with risks and risk information, and his approach is clear, concise and elegant. In sum, I believe that environmental health professionals can apply the insights in this series of articles in a way that will help supplant the "command-and-control" mentatlity that has battered so many of our colleagues and public health/environment inspectors, and baffled decision makers in the past two decades. Asst. Prof. R. Steven Konkel, Ph.D., EKU
Excellent reference book with questionable publisher support.......1997-09-14
This text is one of the most definitive AND USEFUL shelf references for the environmental health sciences. Detailed, accurate, wide-ranging on topics of immediate interest to the practicing sanitarian, engineer or the very interested non-practitioner.
Support from the publisher has been poor. For two years after the announcement of the current addendum, the publisher "disavowed knowledge" of an addendum. When published, the addendum had the same ISBN number as the complete text -- creating the unture appearance of a "reduced" price complete addition.
Salvato, could for the price of this text, be on a more current update of information contained in some chapters (2-3 year cycle). The scope of this work would justify numerous consulting authors. While it is one of the best shelf references and "learning texts" it could still be improved and be better supported by a publisher that sometimes seems to have insulated itself from the buying public.

Book Description
The definitive work on the subject, it offers you comprehensive and accurate coverage of the theory and techniques of ground water development. Provides not only a general overview of the topic with applications but also incorporates sufficient detail to be of use to professionals involved in any phase of ground water. Divided into three parts, the text traces the progression of the study of ground water from its origin through its development and exploitation. Part one deals mainly with the nature of ground water and where it can be found. Part two considers the parameters related to water well design and construction. In part three, there is a thorough review of well and well field operation, including monitoring for environmental protection. Although the focus is on high-capacity ground water producing installations, most of the material is also applicable to lower-yield wells.

Water Follies - a must read for water concerns.......2007-06-08
I gave this book to a friend who just completed an environmental science degree. She said she thought it should be required reading. She learned about some major water concerns in this book that she wasn't taught in classes she took on this same subject. If you are at all concerned about the future of our water supply, you must read this book. While most of us cannot fight the big battles that this issue requires, we can stop buying McDonald's french fries, farm-raised salmon, farm-raised blueberries, etc. Even if you aren't majoring in environmental sciences, read this book. It is an eye opener. We are all going to be affected by a water shortage in the near future. We need to be educated about this very severe problem. Those who control the water will control the world.
Pumping too Much.......2006-08-24
Glennon writes in plain English to warn Americans of the growing danger under our feet. We are pumping groundwater, the gift of fresh and wholesome well water, at an unsustainable rate across the country. Glennon ties groundwater to surface water and illustrates in terms that are as accessible as they are urgent that the United States is headed for a crisis of our own making.
Using a number of case studies, Glennon gives us a glimpse of the American approach to ground water. Throughout much of the US, ground water is considered legally separate from surface water. Within this legal framework, there are few restrictions placed on the use (and abuse) of a critical resource that respects neither property lines nor political boundaries. Indeed, the law encourages abuse with a use-it-or-lose it philosophy to ownership of ground water. Whoever pumps the most wins. Unfortunately, we are pumping so much ground water that rivers, lakes, and ponds across the nation are running dry--ruining many local ecosystems in the process and setting ourselves up for major economic ramifications. With the studies Glennon has chosen, he shows us the consequences of unrestricted ground water pumping for lawns, for agricultural uses, and in support of mining. In every case, Glennon demonstrates that we are doing grave damage to ourselves with our profligate pumping.
This book belongs on the reading list of all high school and college students, regardless of major or course of study.
The biggest pump wins!.......2005-08-28
If we say "Glennon covers all the ground" in a book about water, will the reader be confused? Let's take the risk, since that is precisely what the author does in this excellent study. From the ways in which water collects or flows on the land's surface to the movement of water deep in the earth, Glennon carefully explains how water accumulates. He describes farm, mining and even water for scenic tourist views.Water consumption has been an economic, social and legal issue since the colonies were founded almost four centuries ago.
The legacy of those early efforts to distribute water to thirsty farms and communities is a central theme of this book. As settlement moved westward, readily available water waned. Contention arose between early settlers and those arriving later. Farm use of water was challenged by mining and industry as communities grew. In the West, as available surface water was used or claimed, fresh sources were sought. These proved to be buried deep beneath the surface - "ground water". Ground water was a mysterious resource to many - it still is, according to Glennon. Although it's known that, like streams, ground water reserves must be "recharged", only a little is understood about the rate of inflow or, too often, the source of refreshment. In a nation that consumes over 5000 litres per person per day, the availability of fresh water is a major consideration.
Glennon presents a string of vignettes of water issues in the USA. The selection process allows him to present a spectrum of issues surrounding water availability and use. Although naturally focussing his study in the West where availability and variations in types of demand complicate an already complex area. The stops include San Antonio, a minor river in California, mining in Arizona and Nevada. The East isn't ignored - rivers in Massachusetts and Florida are impacted by groundwater pumping. A Florida case is most enlightening. Groundwater pumping drained moist soils, putting houses at risk and drying lakes. The lake problem was addressed by re-filling the lakes - with more groundwater!
Nearly every case demonstrates the level of ignorance surrounding how water moves and impacts its environment. The legal issues Glennon discusses air this problem admirably. The law considerations range from "the commons" [where all have access] to those who settle first gaining full rights which followers must adapt to or contest. Western court archives are stuffed with litigation records over access. In too many cases, decisions have rested on who needs the most water - the biggest pump often wins. Glennon explains how the science of hydrography and legal decisions over water are often at best disparate. In other cases the two disciplines are sharply at odds. His conclusion suggests these divergencies can be overcome. A number of compromises will have to be reached. The biggest problem, however, is establishing realistic priorities regarding consumption. The biggest problem is data. Collecting it while water is being consumed at astronomical rates won't be a simple task. The water is running out faster than reserves can be measured. When the USA runs out of water, they will seek it elsewhere - a fact all Canadians are well aware of. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]
A book any hydrology student should read.......2003-07-25
I read this book during a summer program dealing with freshwater resources throughout the world. It not only helped my progression through the course, but also gave me a new perspective on water as a resource. In the US most of us do not give a second thought to the water we use in our everyday lives. Even in regions plagued by drought modern technology adds to the illusion that water is everywhere and limitless. However, any reader of this book will tell you differently. It takes you through different case studies through out the country where water use has had dramatic influence on the environment we live in. It explains not just the science of the situation but also the politics often behind the scenes as well. I would highly recommend this book to any student, professor, or hobbyist with an interest in hydrology.
The same motives as Scheherazade.......2003-01-19
Most recent controversy over the use and conservation of America's fresh water has concerned the water visible on the surface - river and lakes. With that as an implicit focus, we frequently argue over where dams ought to be built, what fields ought to be irrigated and at whose cost, whether homes in flood plains ought to be insured at public expense, and so forth.
Robert Glennon, a professor of law at the University of Arizona, James E. Rogers College of Law, wants to draw our attention to invisible water, and to the question how we might best avoid either polluting or running out of it.
Early on, he tells the story of Ubar, a city of ancient Arabia, an oasis for the camel caravans of its time, and a place of fabulous wealth. Scheherazade spoke of Ubar in one of her thousand-and-one tales, as did countless bedouins around countless campfires. It became an Arabian Sodom, reputedly destroyed at the peak of its splendor by an angry God. What Glennon adds is that Ubar (in what we now call Oman) was a very real place.
In the 1980s, an amateur archeologist, Nicholas Clapp, led an expedition that successfully located and unearthed the fortress that had once guarded the precious spring-fed well that had made the city a port of call for those desert-crossing voyagers. It now appears that sometime between 300 and 500 AD, Ubar simply fell. It collapsed of its own weight, into a huge underground limestone cavern - the cavern that its wells had progressively emptied of water. The groundwater had held the city up, physically as well as fiscally. So Ubar, having exended its capital, sank out of sight, and entered legend as the "Atlantis of the desert" (T.E. Lawrence's phrase.)
Glennon tells this story for the same three reasons that Scheherazade did: to charm, to instruct, to survive.

Book Description
The EPA has established regulations which classify four types of disinfection byproducts - TTHMs, haloacetic acids, bromate, and chlorite - and requires public water systems limit these byproducts to specific levels. Most of the information required to comply with these standards is either scattered throughout the literature or derived from conferences or symposiums. Disinfection Byproducts in Drinking Water: Formation, Analysis, and Control pulls all the information together to provide a needed organized presentation of disinfection byproduct analysis, formation, and control. The author begins with an introduction to all disinfection byproducts (DBPs), including their nomenclatures, molecular structures, and formation. He discusses the effects of various water quality parameters on the formation and stability of DBPs in drinking water. He further examines DBP degradation reactions, the effects of various water treatment processes on the formation and removal of DBPs, various technologies for DBP removal and control in drinking water, and the formation and control of inorganic DBPs. The text also reviews past, current, and future regulations, as well as current analytical methods and data evaluation for disinfection byproducts monitoring. Bringing together the findings of many notable researchers in the field, Disinfection Byproducts in Drinking Water serves as a practical guide to understanding the formation of disinfection byproducts and explaining how they are analyzed and controlled. Chemists in plants and laboratories will value the analytical techniques offered in the book, and plant engineers will benefit from the formation and control information.

The Handbook of Groundwater Engineering provides a complete treatment of the theory and practice of groundwater engineering. This second edition includes new chapters on such topics as historical developments, infiltration and run-on under spatially variable hydrologic properties, sea water intrusion into coastal aquifers, groundwater and heat flow, groundwater model validation, scale issues, groundwater sustainability, the impact of climate change, and ecohydrology. It also contains updated chapters on elementary groundwater flow, transport processes, two- and three-dimensional flow, modeling the movement of water and solute through preferential flow paths, geostatistics, and more.
Customer Reviews:
The Handbook of Groundwater Engineering.......2001-05-17
A very conscientious textbook. The book covers a great deal of information including the occurrence of groundwater, groundwater flow, modeling, testing, geostatistics, solute transport, GIS, and remediation. The subject matter is complemented by tables, data, and graphs. which help explain key concepts and the mathematical equations used. I like to use this in conjunction with Handbook of Hydrology. A very good book for the practising professional.
A true comprehensive resource.......2000-10-31
This book is aimed at the practicing groundwater professional or advanced student. It is an excellent reference and review of almost any groundwater topic. Each chapter is written by an expert in the field. Each contains a well-presented discussion of key concepts and equations. The end of the chapter lists a handful of recommended references for further information followed by a comprehensive bibliography. This is your guide to the whole ground water field. If it isn't in here, you can at least find out where to find it.

Book Description
THE DRINKING WATER BOOK takes a level-headed look at the serious issues surrounding America's drinking water supply. Unlike water purifier manufacturers and public health officials, Ingram presents unbiased reporting on what's in your water and how to drink safely. Featuring all the latest scientific research, the book evaluates the different kinds of filters and bottled waters and rates specific products on the market.
Customer Reviews:
Why Should I Be Concerned About My Drinking Water?.......2006-09-26
Colin Ingram pulls the reader into his book by offering "Ten Quick Tips" to "wet" your appetite for the valuable detailed information that follows.
Ingram, who has years of experience as a scientific writer, articulates with clarity in this comprehensive guide to the importance of pure drinking water for maintaining optimum health. The chapter on water pollutants and the risk to health was startling. There is a logical order to the book as the next chapter deals with water testing and finding out what is in your water, and the best drinking water for good health. I was amazed to discover the various sources of commercial water suppliers and the number and variety of their products.
Several chapters deal with water purifiers and how they work. They include information on filters, distillers, alternative methods, and suggestions for combining types of purifiers. Ingram included suggestions on how to evaluate these systems, types of installations, a cost comparison of purifiers, and a comparison of the cost of bottled water versus that of a purifier.
I found the chapter summaries and author's recommendations especially helpful. He not only introduced primary and alternative methods, and combinations of purifiers, but also pros and cons of various views being expounded by vendors, environmentalists, and politicians.
The appendix, glossary, and index add to this compact, comprehensive manual on how to insure you are drinking safer water.
This is an important, informative, guidebook, calling for imperative action steps to do something about the water you are drinking.
Simple, common sense information.......2006-09-18
I've had an interest in safe drinking water for many years. The market is flooded (pun intended) with advertising and claims. Mr. Ingram has made a difficult field very understandable. So much so, that you can make an intelligent decision on how to ensure safe drinking water for your family. I bought more copies and have given them as gifts.
He claims to be totally independent and from the book, it seems he is.
I am a new author, finishing my book Common Sense, The Joy of Living Smarter. I am listing this book in my reference chapter.
A Candid Review by the Author.......2006-07-31
I wrote this book because after extensive communication with government agencies, universities, non-profit organizations and private sector manufacturers, I simply could not find objective information about drinking water safety and consumer options. Since I have been a professional writer and editor for over four decades, I decided to bite the bullet and do it myself. I spent five years researching material for this book and I have no axes to grind; just the desire for truth. This is the 2nd edition of this book. The 1st edition was hailed as the definitive consumer book on drinking water, and I believe this book is even better. You'll find that it contains the most objective, complete and easy-to-understand information on drinking water that is available, and this opinion has been confirmed by many authorities in the field of drinking water safety. Thanks for your time, Colin Ingram.
The best drinking water book you can buy.......2002-03-25
This book is well named, since it is the definitive book on drinking water. It includes extensive information on water contaminants, water testing, bottled water, and home purification systems. The information is well-researched, easy to read, and well-formatted, with simple charts and diagrams supplementing the text where necessary. I bought several books on drinking water at the same time, and this one was clearly superior to all the others. Don't waste time and money; buy this book first!
Good guide, but..........2000-03-04
This book is certainly a good guide for people living in the US who have to face polluted drinking water in their homes, but if you are a scientist working for some time already in the field of water treatment I recommend that you keep your fingers off this book. This book is certainly written for the broad public and doesn't offer much news for the experienced reader. Especially if you live outside the US this book is not very suitable. It's just a shame that "real" engineering books are always so expensive.
