Book Description
Life in coastal sand dunes, salt marshes and shingle banks presents a variety of challenges to their inhabitants. By describing the interactions of coastal organisms with the physical processes shaping the granular deposits within and on which they live, the authors illuminate many aspects of adaptation, population dynamics, community ecology, zonation and ecophysiology. A wide range of biological principles and geomorphological features are illustrated and there is lively discussion of the relevant aspects of applied biology, environmental threat and conservation management. Well-chosen examples and case studies have been drawn from coastal systems around the world, particularly those of the British Isles, continental Europe and North America.
Book Description
This colorfully illustrated 15-minute exercise routine introduces readers to the basics of the ancient "bodymind" art of Tai Chi. The author approaches Tai Chi with fun and simplicity, making this a practice anyone can engage in and enjoy. Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese art of mind-body harmony, is designed to achieve a balance of mental and physical fitness. It combines elements of calming, focusing, strengthening, toning, and balance. Tai Chi is popular among all age groups, especially seniors, because of its low physical impact and tremendously positive impact on vitality.
John has developed and trademarked a revolutionary way to teach Tai Chi, called the New Forest Way. This simple method makes the art of Tai Chi easy for people of all ages to learn and use daily to improve their health.

A wonderful begining for a good day.......2007-06-08
It is very good, but it goes a little too repetitious for me...and the exercises are a little too slow, it takes more than 15 min to develope them, but they are great.
A Morning Cup of Tai Chi.......2006-06-30
My wife has health problems but was looking for a low impact form of exercise. This is it. She enjoys doing this.
simple and easy.......2006-03-09
I found this book very easy to follow and enjoyed it right from the start. I find the instructions very easy to follow
Easy and fun to learn............2006-03-04
I've tried 'regular' Tai Chi and understand and respect it, but this is a form that can be done right away and is easily remembered. I'm using it with my senior fitness classes and they love it!
Not really worth it.......2006-02-22
I purchased both the book and the DVD and felt that while that exercise program (DVD) was very good, the book was very different and not worth purchasing. I cannot even give it away because I think that it is such a waste.
Customer Reviews:
This is not entertainment.......2007-10-19
The LAW was something I used 30 years ago as a high school student; now I recommend it to my university students who need help writing. While the examples are a bit dated, the lessons are still apropos. Those reviewers who found it boring and tedious are showing their immaturity. This is NOT a novel, it is not entertainment, it is a how to book on how to WRITE an essay. Lucile Vaughan Payne wrote a fabulous little book 42 years ago and it is still useful today. If you cannot get past the lack of entertainment value then you will not be able to learn the lessons anyway. If you want to learn to write, get this book!
Pound for pound, price for price, this books is the Champ!.......2006-08-26
-Have many copies on my shelf; usually give them away to friends in writing need and it doesn't take long for me to get a big "Thank you" from them.
-I thumb through this book before every article I write.
-A classic
The Writing Bible.......2006-06-16
I am a college student, I attend Michigan State University and I was required to buy this book my last year in high school. Now our teacher DID NOT require us to read this book, but she made us all buy it... This was the best $6.00 I ever spent. This teaches you the rights and wrongs, and the ins and outs of Wrighting! I took a big step into going to a University right out of highschool - Writing being a weak point of mine, this book put me up to speed in 2 weeks. If you apply what you learn and write alot while reading this, you will see your self impove!! Best book to buy for someone in highschool, or first year in college. Or maybe if you going back to college. It's my bible, I look to it everytime I wright!
Pointless Book Lulls Students to Sleep!.......2006-04-02
Unfortunatly I was required to read this atrocious book for school. I am a very forgiving student when it come to books that are dull, but this one drove me past my limit. The examples are outdated and pointless. There are too many references to dreag racing and silverware.
Granted she might have some good points but you can't see them because they are buried so deeply in her ramblings. It was THE MOST BORING BOOK I have ever read!! It was difficult staying awake.
This torture may have been worthwhile if there was something to be learned. Unfortunately there is nothing to be learned!!!
You could condense the book down to ONE sentence- Writing is important, like drag racing, and never say the word there. Okay thats the book.I just saved you 7 bucks and the pain of deciphering the boring words in MICROSCOPIC PRINT. Ilearned as much froim her book as I do from SWEDISH PROPAGANDA that i do not understand.
Only Swedish propaganda wasd more interseting!!
Homeschool parents, rejoice!.......2004-07-25
I've purchased several expensive books, combed our library system, and spent hours online looking for a way to replicate my 4 years in A.P. English for my homeschooling kids. This magical little book is by far the easiest to apply to homeschooling formats, the most thorough, and far and away the cheapest solution to our problem. I can't rave about it enough.
Please don't be put off by some reviews here that call Payne's little book "boring"---it's not MTV, certainly, but it's succinct and gets right down to business in a chatty style. The examples are dated, true, but I find that a plus: teens are more willing to properly evaluate the arguments for or against, say, drag racing (a puzzling social "problem" to our kids)than more volatile modern issues that kick in a more knee-jerk emotional response. The dated examples are quaint rather than distracting, and they don't detract from her lessons.
Essays can be excruciatingly formulaic, or they can blend, in Payne's words, "fact with imagination, knowledge with feeling, never giving itself over wholly to one or the other. But its purpose is always the same: to express an opinion." Learning the format and developing elegant, personal style is what this gem is all about. And a book that combines an all-in-one guide to constructing an essay (as opposed to a report or a manual) combined with a VERY useful style section is really hard to find! It's funny, too--her crusade against the passive voice, "A Plan For Self-Protection" is a good example: "At this extreme, passive voice aquires a peculiar aura of its own, a subtle undertone of ah-how-sweet-and-sad-and-strange the world is(always pleasing to the young, and to the young writer almost irresistable). Resist it. It's just secretarial prose with its face painted: all dressed up but still going nowhere."
Thoughtful questions at the end of each short chapter help with comprehension. This would be a great "text" to use in a co-op setting, although it would work well with a student learning alone. Thank goodness it's still available!

Musicians practice. Athletes practice. And so, too, argues Judy Reeves, should writers practice. Her Writer's Book of Days provides a "writing prompt" for each day of the year, and then some: "Write about a time someone said yes"; "Write about leaving"; "Something seemed different." The more you practice, says Reeves, the more you write. And writing from a prompt, she adds, is like having "someone provid[e] the music when you want to dance." The prompts are the backbone of this book, but its pages are fleshed out with advice, inspiration, quotations from writers, encouragement, and a profusion of literary tidbits. Write from the sense, Reeves recommends. Audition words. Take risks. And when all else fails, amuse yourself with these astonishing tidbits from literary lives: T.S. Eliot, we learn, preferred writing with a head cold; Flaubert kept his lover's slippers and mittens in his desk drawer; and Friedrich von Schiller liked to invoke his muse by sniffing rotten apples. --Jane Steinberg
Book Description
Playwright and editor Judy Reeves has taught writing, led creative writing workshops, and participated in writing groups for years. A Writer’s Book of Days is a compilation of all that she’s learned from getting together to write with other people. She says, “the book came about because I saw the difference ongoing, regular practice could make in a writer’s life.” Practice makes perfect, and this book makes practice easy by providing writers and would-be writers with stimulating topics, helpful instruction, monthly guidelines, dozens of inspiring quotes, writerly lore, and tips for special writing sessions such as marathons, cafe writing, and other ways to make the work of writing more creative and fun.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding book.......2006-03-14
This is wonderful for kicking of thoughts or story ideas with a suggested topic for each day. Fantastic!
Great Help to Young Writers.......2006-01-29
This book is an excellent tool for the young writer. It gets you writing every single day with all kinds of helpful prompts. Also in this book are helpful hints, looks at how other writers work, quotes, and exercises. This is by far the most useful book on writing I have bought thus far. I highly recommend it for writers who want to write everyday, but struggle with it and don't want to keep an actual journal. Through these exercises, I have had more story ideas this month than I did all of last year.
like an old friend...........2005-04-14
This book is one of my favorites. The author has such a friendliness about her writing, as if she is holding a conversation with you over a cup of coffee.
Her writing prompts are creative and lively, and will get you writing.
I love the quotes. Just about every page has a quote from a well known writer about writing.
Judy has plenty of advice in this book. She also fills it with hers, and others writing experiences.
Although the book is arranged so that it follows the twelve months, it doesn't have to be read that way. Many times I've just flipped to a page and started reading. I always came out of it inspired and ready to write.
Fantastic for the Writer in You!.......2005-01-26
Every writer should have this book in their Library. The prompts can be used in any way but I like them as they are planned out by date. If you enjoy prompt writing or are just in need of extra support this is a fantastic book.
I do not recommend buyin her Kit as it is very similar to this book. And this book is the Gem to complete your Journal topics.
The Perfect Writing Buddy - Lots of Ideas and Inspiration.......2004-12-08
I am always on the look out for quality writing books which will inspire me as a writer and that I can recommend to others to inspire their writing as well. Judy Reeve's well received book is successful on both counts - exceeds my hopes and expectations in every way (except, perhaps for the unusual color choice of orange for a highlight color in the layout of the book.)
The book is simple to understand and implement. Each month of the year has a guideline, some interesting content with fun facts like James Michener started writing at age 40 and easy to follow tips of the month.
There is a writing prompt for every day of the year. No writer would be lost for ideas with this book close at hand. I can see myself using it and re-using it and re-using it.
Reeves comes across as a writing buddy sharing thoughts and guidance in perfectly reasonable and re-readable doses.

Write Write Write.......2007-09-01
This is the advice that is given in this wonderful little book. It has little one to two words or small sentence idea joggers for everyday of the year. The idea is to sit down every day for a set amount time and using thoes little joggers, write whatever comes to mind. Freewriting if you will, to help get your imagination jump started.
I, personally, find this very effective and fun. I have writen some really cute stuff using this, and some really bad stuff. And the joy of freewriting is that you don't have to stay on the same subject for the time you have set, you mind gets to wonder and your pen, or computer or typewriter, gets to follow it, and sometimes it is the pen, computer or typewritter that leads the way and your mind has to play cetch up. LOL
If you are having any problems at all with your writing style, or just want to branch out, or want to work through some things in your life, this is a wonderful little book to help you do it.
A Nice Gift.......2004-06-23
Judy Reeves has boxed together a book of prompts and practices along with cards that offer advice on the practice of creative writing.
This set is a nice gift for anyone who suffers from writer's block or who wants to embark on a career in creative writing. The book offers a year of writing prompts, recommended readings, many quotes from famous writers and several pages of open journal pages that holds all of the inspiration one might receive. The cards offer 25 suggestions for becoming a better writer, from overcoming bad habits to developing new ideas freely.
All in all this is a nicely packaged set for a gift to a would-be writer. For serious writers I recommend Reeve's more thorough book on writing, "A Writer's Book of Days". But any inspiration is good inspiration!
jumpstart your writing.......2004-02-07
If you do not have Judy Reeves' book, & are into cards & brevity, then A CREATIVE WRITER'S KIT will be a good addition to your daily writing exercises. You do do daily exercises, don't you?
Judy Reeves has a mission -- to get us writing -- not necessarily on the Great American Novel -- more on learning to write well, on recording our lives, on becoming articulate about our thoughts, on making the time for what satisfies us...writing!
A CREATIVE WRITER'S KIT easily fits into a pocket or bag, & thus is perfect for traveling. Perhaps the only thing "missing" is a slot for a pen.
Rebeccasreads recommends A CREATIVE WRITER'S KIT especially for students of & novices to the ancient art of writing. It is a unique gift for the writers & wannabes in your life.
Great for travel and gifts.......2004-01-25
I have finally admitted to myself that I am a musician who writes. I spend my daytime hours in a job that is noncreative and demanding. My spare time is spent in musical efforts so the time devoted to writing seems to fritter away. In the past, however, I found myself jotting down prompts from the "Days" book as I prepared for night-owl writing on choral concert tours.
Yes, this kit contains excerpts from Judy Reeves' book. I know that fact regardless of whether I am shopping from this site or in the bookstore. The editorial description on the site informs me. The kit's packaging contains chapter titles familiar to me. Obviously, "A Spirited Companion & Lively Muse for the Writing Life" is taken directly from the book's title.
I sought portability and have found it in this kit. I no longer have to search for index cards in my office clutter. Concert tours do require immersion in music, but when the performance is over, there is always time for people-watching. I can imagine personal histories or envision these people in different settings. It's only with Judy's assistance that I'm able to let my mind wander.
The kit I possess is the fourth one I have purchased. Each time I do a quick show-and-tell to a friend or colleague, I receive a bug-eyed response and a confession that this person "used to write" so I order the kit as a gift. One recipient was a computer manager who has a degree in English Lit. She called and thanked me for the gift: "I have never been able to sit down and just write...like I can with these prompts!!"
I've been pleased with my purchases.
Have to agree with the previous reviewer.......2003-11-24
This is a complete repackaging of "A Writer's Book of Days" and the blurbs on the package do NOT warn you. There is no new material at all. If you already have the book, then you have everything the "kit" has to offer.
