Book Description

Lured by idyllic memories of ancient cities, spectacular mountains and, most of all, dreamy afternoons spent chewing the psychoactive leaves of the Qat tree, Kevin Rushby set out to travel from the highlands of Ethiopia to Yemen. It was a fascinating and dangerous journey, peopled with an extraordinary array of characters -- criminals, Islamic scholars, an exorcist, and Cedric the travelling companion from hell. Eating the Flowers of Paradise combines classic travel writing with an explanation of the rich and varied culture surrounding the drug qat. Legal in the U.K. but banned in the U.S., experts variously claim to be as mild as tea or as addictive as cocaine. In the Yemen, it is central to the life of the country, and, as he goes, Rushby explores our attitudes towards substance abuse and addiction.

In this book, he said it doesn't take very much Qat to get a high. Kevin Sites documents that he tried the leaves and he said it would take a huge bundle of qat to feel even anything.

5 out of 5 stars Taking the high road to Qat'land.......2006-08-17

Ever since I was a kid, I've always wanted to visit Yemen. Like author Kevin Rushby, I didn't want to do research there, earn money there,. or take anything away from Yemen. I just wanted to see, hear, feel, and know what that faroff land was like. Thanks to my dear President and his warloving cronies, I now have a snowball's chance in hell of ever achieving my dream. Keep on shootin' George, you'll definitely solve all problems that way. I must say, though, that the next best thing to a Yemen trip could be reading EATING THE FLOWERS OF PARADISE. Though the story of the author's voyage centers around qat, a leaf from a tree which grows in Ethiopia and Yemen, whose leaves are chewed to induce a feeling of dreamy well-being and melancholy happiness, this is a travel book par excellence. While Rushby starts his solo voyage in Ethiopia, his lack of local language, and the general lack of information about Ethiopia other than what he sees and does himself, do not entrance the reader. (Nor does he travel in the more interesting parts of the country.) He meets some wild characters [a Nigerian gem smuggler named Cedric or Arthur or...?] and has a few strange adventures in Djibouti, on the Red Sea coast. It is when he lands in Yemen that the book really gets good. Rushby speaks some Arabic. Yemeni rural people come alive in this book, their villages, the hospitality of all, the terraced mountains where qat, coffee, and other crops are grown, the magnificent, rugged scenery of remote parts of the country. Readers may pick up some recent history, some facts about former times, and details of qat growing and use, but this is a very existential travel book, not given to long-winded explanations. Rushby makes no bones about it. He wandered the Yemeni "outback" looking for good highs. He found plenty. Chewing qat with the locals was an excellent way to integrate himself in Yemeni society, where large numbers of people chew qat every afternoon. Rushby records all sorts of bizarre or culturally fascinating incidents. Some of the bizarre ones have to do with his own behavior and qat-induced dreams. When I finished the book, if someone had offered me a ticket to Yemen, I would have flown out that very evening. Sadly, this colorful, fascinating book is as close as I'll ever get. Two other books on Yemen that make a great trio with Rushby's book are "Motoring with Mohammed" by Eric Hansen, and Steven Caton's "Peaks of Yemen I Summon".

4 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Trip.......2006-08-09

Kevin is a good artist. He vividly describes his travels, and you feel that you are there. For those places in Yemen where I have been, I felt like I was there again. He is accurate in his descriptions, as well as poetic- a rare art. His book is focused on a destination- traveling the old qat route, and this helps give more cohesiveness then you find in most travelogues. There is a rare vivid description of demonic manifestation and folk Islamic exorcism, in great detail. As an added bonus, the ubiquitous Tim Mackintosh-Smith shows up again, as he seems to do in every book about Yemen. We can see some of the same journeys Tim reports in Yemen, but from the perspective of his fellow traveler. And there is even an oblique reference to the boat of Eric Hansen from Motoring with Mohammed.

I value this book for the same reason I find it wanting. I wanted to learn more about qat- what I couldn't find anywhere else: how it effects you, to what extent it is addictive, what the side effects are. There is too much contradictory material in the literature, and so you almost have to go to an addict to discover these questions. And now having read Kevin, I am fairly sure that I will not do qat again.

Kevin is also a drug addict. He denies it, pointing out the difference between an true addict and the average qat user like himself. But what he describes has all the earmarks of addiction. Certainly, there appear to be no withdrawal pains- and again, information I had been unable to verify elsewhere. But also he describes a constant desire to have the leaf, and a feeling of incompleteness without it. It has become the center of his life, and the life of many Yemeni, to hear Kevin tell it. They become quite cantankerous without their daily qat chew. This also is addiction. He also describes the side effects, depending on the variety of leaf, such as horrifying dreams and even an inability to fully comprehend life around you. Some of the dreams Kevin describes I'd frankly describe as demonic. He doesn't mention the increase in mouth cancer caused by the use of DDT on the leaves. Most significantly, it has a profound effect on the user, as told by Kevin. We learn that it changes your personality and emotional state, making you babble as if you were on marijuana, unable to remember the immediate past but to focus with great clarity on the distant past. It keeps you up for two days at a time, depressing appetite and sex drive significantly, which is helpful, as qat production leaves less arable land to grow crops in the poorest Arab country in the world. After stimulating you for hours, it leaves you slightly depressed. It seems to have the visions of LSD, the relaxation of marijuana, the depression of alcohol, and the addiction of caffeine and tobacco combined. It seems to be the perfect Soma- except that it tastes like hard, dried tea leaves without sugar.

But I don't want my mind altered, not even by Soma. It doesn't matter that there are no withdrawal effects- I don't want to experience demonic dreams and have my mood altered by a substance. I'd rather experience being drunk on God than a leaf. So I am quite thankful to Kevin for so vividly describing qat and how it works. Unfortunately, he is all praise of the plant, and does not realize what it does to him and many Yemeni.

2 out of 5 stars Walking through a Qat Haze.......2001-09-20

A book about a journey through Ethiopia and Yemen should have been interesting; this wasn't. Thank goodness Cedric arrived because the Ethiopia section would really have dragged. I admire the reviewer who read this in just days; it took me weeks. The section on Yemen was more interesting but at the end I thought: "what did he learn, about either the country, qat, or himself?" I think he discovered nothing; and if he did it certainly was not in the book. I cannot help but compare people like Rushby with Burton and Thesiger (perhaps because they themselves love to) and the comparison always favors the earlier explorers and writers.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2001-08-14

As travel writing goes, this was an okay book. Nothing memorable, but he did go to some interesting places and is a decent enough writer. That said, he also seems to be a bit of a twit, which became annoying at some points. It is actually amazing that he survived the journey, doing things like setting off to walk across the desert in Yemen from point A to point B, carrying a single bottle of mineral water which he then drops on the rocks.

Book Description

Following the original steps of pioneering naturalists, Gail Fishman profiles thirteen men who explored North America's southeastern wilderness between 1715 and the 1940s, including John James Audubon, Mark Catesby, John and William Bartram, John Muir, and Alvan Wentworth Chapman. The book is also Fishman's personal travelogue as she experiences the landscape through their eyes and describes the changes that have occurred along the region's trails and streams.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars To the Garden of Eden.......2002-01-03

The paradise of the southeast includes such cities as Charleston and natural areas as the St. Johns River, Cedar Key, and even the "Garden of Eden" in the Florida Panhandle. Fishman covers the more famous explorers such as Audubon, Muir, and Bartram but my appreciation goes to her for introducing me to some of the lesser known naturalists such as Hardy Croom who found new plants such as the Florida Yew, and the explorations of Dr. John Small and his weed wagon botanizing in the Everglades. The nations appreciation should go out to Roland Harper for researching and helping to preserve the Okefenokee Swamp.

Fishman mixes the travels of the naturalist with useful background natural history, and her own trip through the area traversed by the naturalist. Often this provides useful contrasts, but at times was superfluous; did it really add anything to the history to tell us that her car broke down or that the water in the campground shower was too hot? At times she projects her own personal emotions into the historic figure for example of William Bartram "He felt fear and must have sometimes felt a great loneliness". At times she also projects modern sensibility onto the times, for example though we may all now agree that the plan to drain the Everglades was "incredibly stupid", but it would have been more valuable to present an understanding of the culture of the late 1800's to understand this better. Despite these criticisms, I appreciated this book and hope that perhaps she does a follow up of some of the more recent naturalists such as herpetologist Archie Carr or ornithologist Arthur Howell.

    Book Description

Sailing Through Paradise describes a single-handed four-month-long sailing trip from the Florida Keys to the Virgin Islands and back. Illustrated with color photographs taken by the author, the book is a visual treat for the armchair traveler as well as a resource for anyone planning a similar trip. It touches on topics of interest such as planning a route, anchoring techniques, customs and immigration, understanding weather forecasts, and repairs at sea.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars a good reference for those contemplating Caribbean Cruising.......1999-07-16

If you've read Tristan Jones, Harry Pigeon, Joshua Slocum or Frank Mulville, you may be disappointed in this one. Harris' account has plenty of factual detail that would be useful as a cross-check to other Caribbean cruising guides, such as the Van Sant he mentions. Unfortunately, I got the feeling he was more interested in getting the voyage over than savoring the experieces and people he meets.

The sailing purist will wince at the author's persistant reliance on power in anything less favorable than a beam reach. Also, I was surprised that he would knowingly attempt a Gulf Stream crossing with an inadequate reefing system and a defective auto pilot. This is not a book for cruising beginners (like myself) looking for pointers on seamanship.

I found the book stylistically monotonous with its persistant use of present tense, active voice and picture captions that are direct quotes from the text. A good, frank editor could have made this account more enjoyable.

To read Kayaking in Paradise is to experience the sensation of knifing through crystal-clear water at a good clip--and without even leaving the sofa! Subtitled Journeys from Alaska Through the Inside Passage, the book is the result of a three-month sea-kayaking expedition from Alaska to Vancouver, British Columbia, through the Pacific Northwest's fabled Inside Passage. Along the way, the author and photographers meet up with salmon fishermen, loggers, and 20th-century pioneers--not to mention the occasional pod of orcas. Images of calving glaciers, fog-shrouded coastlines, and kayaks moving gracefully through cold, glassy water are accompanied by maps and travelogue-style text.

5 out of 5 stars Transform your skiing.......2005-06-16

Unlike most of the ski books I read, this book helped me zero in on my attitudes-- all the little mental numbers I did on myself while trying to improve or just enjoy skiing. It helped me focus on areas I had problems with, without heaping criticism on myself. It changed the way I learned by teaching me constructive things to replace that inner critic with. "You look so loose and relaxed," an instructor who had worked with me before commented. This book shows you how to allow yourself to learn unencumbered by fears. Things I read here helped me when I learned to inline skate, and pavement is a lot rougher than snow.

5 out of 5 stars Helped overcoming fear.......2004-02-20

I can only recommend this book. I have been fighting fear on the slopes for three years. This book seems to have freed me of fear. Thanks a lot!

5 out of 5 stars 26 years of skiing, 6 teaching, and this book is #1.......2002-02-10

I rad Inner Skiing about 6-7 years ago, and it changed my skiing life. Most everything written about skiing (and other sports, as far as I can tell) is about technique, tricks, how-to's and so on. Inner Skiing is about being a skier - about the fundamental relationship we have to the snow, the mountain, the skis and ourselves.

Discovering who I am as a skier (and what my fears, my doubts, my anxieties look like) have exploded this sport for me. This book works on the emotional, intellectual and physical levels - I use the discovery tools on myself, and with my students, and get incredible results.

Even if you don't ski, this book is great - I've used some of his approaches in many areas of my life. They're fun, they're doable, and they help me focus on what's really there, not what I imagine. And beyond that, they open up incredible opportunities to play, explore and have a great time on the slopes or off.

The earlier edition of the book poo-pood technique - I don't agree with that, and my sense is the book took a bit of a hit for that. There's things to learn about skiing, and taking lessons from a great instructor will make a huge difference whether it's your first day or you've been at it for decades. Nonetheless, I recommend this as book #1 for anyone who wants to ski, or who wants something more from their skiing. ANd for the instructors out there - read it!

5 out of 5 stars For any one with physical weaknessess, take a look........1999-09-27

Physical weakness has plagued me for over three years. This book is giving me the confidence to trust my body all over again. Due to agoraphobia I have become weak. After starting this book I am now giving my body the credit it deserves. He suggests dealing with doubt, worry, and fear.

Take a good slow look at this book. If it helps, let me know. Steve

                Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Preparing to Write an Ethical Will.......2006-02-24

I purchased Barry K. Baines, Ethical Wills: Putting Your Values on Paper, at the suggestion of a friend who had read it and been inspired to write an ethical will for her children. It seemed like a good idea to me. We cannot help but relay our values and beliefs to our children--they pick them up by osmosis. I think, though, that we seldom sit down and think through what we would LIKE to convey to our children, including ways in which we have not lived up to our values or would like them to do better than we.

At the same time that I bought Ethical Wills: Putting Your Values on Paper, I also bought Rachael Freed's Women's Lives, Women's Legacies: Passing Your Beliefs & Blessings to Future Generations. I prefered this book. It may be that I prefered the second book because, as a woman, it spoke more to my concerns, but I think not. Dr. Baines focuses on his work with the terminally ill, and the healing power of putting our thoughts on paper. Many of the examples he gives read like old Polonius's hipocritical, "Neither a barrower nor a lender be...," platitudes that most in this culture would accept. Ms. Freed takes us on a journey of discovery--discovery of ourselves. Whether done in a group, as Ms. Freed suggests, or independently, as I would most likely tackle such personal writing, her topics are likely to bring us to a deeper understanding of ourselves and enable us to create a more personal document for our loved ones.

                5 out of 5 stars A Must Read!.......2005-11-06

Ethical Wills is a must read for each and everyone of us! Not only is it fascinating to learn about the history behind such wills, but the workbook he provides the readers with is such an valuable tool.
We all need to be concerned about writing an ethical will while we are still able to communicate our wishes. My late mother had Alzheimer's and it was so very devastating and frightening to see her no longer able to communicate her wishes. Thankfully, we had spoken about what she wanted her last wishes to be long before Alzheimer's destroyed her mind.
I do not know if I, too, will one day suffer her same fate so I am taking all of the necessary steps NOW while I am still able to communicate to make my final wishes known. This book has been an invaluable help to me as well as another wonderful new publication by Renata Marie Vestevich. "Grant Me My Final Wish: A personal journal to simplify life's inevitable journey." This book is a wonderful companion to Dr. Baine's book. While his book is a workbook of sorts, Ms. Vestevich's book is a beautifully bound journal that you can write in whenever you have time. These two books work beautifully together. Ms. Vestevich's book leads you gently through the process of making your final wishes known to your loved ones. She guides you through the process of making that ethical will in a very compassionate manner. There is even a place within the journal for you to place beloved pictures and write down special memories.
None of us likes to dwell upon our eventual death. However, having seen my mother destroyed by Alzheimer's and her being no longer able to communicate even the simplest of wishes, I strongly urge all of you to take steps now to make your last wishes known!
These two superbly written books...each very special in their very own way..will help you do just that.

5 out of 5 stars Quick easy-to-use guide to writing ethical wills.......2003-11-18

Dr. Barry Baines provides a thoughtful explanation of ethical wills, describing for readers the historical context of the practice and outlining how people today can leave a lasting legacy for their loved ones by putting their values on paper. The guidance he provides in this handbook makes it possible for anyone to write an ethical will, whether they've just learned of the practice or grown up reading ethical legacies of their ancestors. This is an excellent guide.

5 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Ethical Wills.......2003-08-04

Ethical Wills: Putting Your Values on Paper provides a terrific introduction to ethical wills, with historical background, specific guidelines for writing an ethical will, and a variety of samples. With its reader-friendly tone and clear suggestions, Ethical Wills makes a useful handbook for anyone interested in creating such a document. I especially appreciated the sample wills to show a range of approaches.
This book was a great help to me when I started writing ethical wills. As a member of the Association of Personal Historians, I help others record their own ethical wills and family stories. I keep this book in my professional library and recommend it often.
My only beef? It's too short! I wanted more samples and more history. Guess I'll have to wait for Dr. Baines' next book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to ethical wills........2003-08-03

I found this to be a wonderful guide to ethical wills. As a video biographer I often find that clients wish to speak about their values and beliefs, and tell their loved ones how important they are. This book enabled me to aid my clients with this aspect. The time spent on values is often one of the most touching and commented on parts of the final video. I found out about this book through the Association of Personal Historians, as a member of this group the author has contributed greatly to our knowledge in this area.

                4 out of 5 stars A Pleasurable Read.......2003-04-02

Saharan Boy is an interesting coming-of-age tale set in the Western Sahara circa 1980. Psychological overtones meld with exciting adventures to make this novel a pleasurable read. I especially appreciated the author's sharp insight and knowledge of the area's people and customs.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for teens.......2003-03-22

I would highly recommend this novel to teenagers looking for a good read! Saharan Boy is a classic teen "coming of age" story that addresses the universal questions faced by all adolescents: "Who am I? How do I become a man? How can I make a difference in the world? Will anybody listen to me?" With lots of action and adventure thrown in, teens will be hooked!

                5 out of 5 stars Epic Journey.......2003-03-19

This young-adult novel, written for adults as well, follows the travels of a Moroccan boy searching for his father who is a prisoner of war in the disputed area of the Western Sahara. This novel, about a boy's coming of age in the face of poverty and war, is full of details of Arab culture and life in Morocco. At the same time, Hamid's journeys take the reader through Morocco from the city of Fes to the Sahara Desert.

                4 out of 5 stars About a Saharan Boy.......2003-03-18

Richard Bellamy has written an interesting, well informed narrative of the life of a young boy growing into manhood in a very different time and place. This book can give the young reader a real sense of the many historical events occurring in Morocco during the 1980's, and how they shaped the life of Hamid, the Saharan Boy.
