This book is must for process engineer esp. engineer in Petroleun and Refinery business. Written in very lucid manner shows the author is not only technically competent but has extensive experience in the industry. His book on " Distillation Operation" is also highly recomended.

Good overview.......2007-08-17

Good overview and introduction for bioprocess engineering. However, it's not so good if you want to know more detail, but it does say it covers "basic concepts", which is what it does in a clear concise way.

Good material for upper level study.......2007-04-06

Pros: Good layout and order of material. Fairly clear in bridging theory with practice.
Cons: Bad binding, had to replace once already. Some of the example questions are put together poorly; i.e. bad data, poor use of equations and material.
Overall: 5 stars for effort and material, 1 star for quality and thoroughness = 3 stars overall.

VERY GOOD BOOK IN THE SUBJECT.......2003-07-16

This volme I have purchased yesterday from the local Book Seller. I had gone through first three chapters. Since I am teaching Biochemical Engineering to my Undergraduate and Post Graduate students for last three years, I understand this volume is very much helpful in addition to some volumes I have in this subject like, Biochemical Engineering by Humphrey, Aiba and Millis (Academic Press), Fundamentals of Biochemical Engineering by Baily & Ollis (Mc Graw Hill). However, in teaching the tutorials in this subject, an instruction manual consisting of solution of unsolved problems given at the end of each chapter of the book would be very much helpful. I have collected a such instruction manual (solutions to unsolved problems given in the Fundamentals of Biochemical Engineering)(Gift copy) from McGraw Hill Publishing Company . I hope any such volume might be available for Bioprocess Engineering by Shuler and Kargi. If so, I would appreciate for detail information and way to procure it. It will not only help the teacher but the students as well.

Good, but has glaring flaws.......2003-05-08

This was the book for my introductory bioprocess engineering course. I felt it covered the quantitative areas, such as enzyme kinetics, bioreactor design, stoichiometry, etc.., quite well. However, the qualitative sections, such as DNA replication, metabolic pathways, and cell function, etc.., are explained way too quickly and lightly for someone with little or no training in Biology. Upon reading a few pages into one of these qualitative sections, you quickly find the author throwing terms at you that he never defined (to be fair, it would take an extra 100 pages to define all of these terms). Also, the text has some really unfortunate typos, typos so severe they may actually hinder your learning (subscripts change for no reason, two different constants given the same symbol, etc.) Biology folks will be happy, but ChEs with no knowledge of Biology may want to stick to the section on bioprocess engineering in Fogler.

This introduction to nuclear physics is very clear and covers all the essential elements.

A student's perspective.......2004-04-23

This was used as the textbook for my introduction to nuclear engineering class. While the information as present and relevant, it is presented in a meandering way that doesn't tell you what's important. The problems presented at the end of each chapter expect you to remember numbers and formulas that may have only been mentioned in passing 7 chapters ago. Further, each step of the problems has been rounded, making the final answer very different from that gained by simply doing the entire equation all at once. This may have been understandable when the first edition was written, but we have progressed significantly beyond the slide-rule, and the new generation of nuclear engineers is operating with much more sophisticated technology. The available instructor's answer guide to the problems does not even give the location of equations and numbers, nor is there a comprehensive appendix with all forumlas and numbers.

This is another in the valuable "Concept Series" of books by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' Center for Chemical Process Safety. It's purpose is "to assist designers and operators of chemical facilities to understand and reduce potential hazards associated with static electricity." The book succeeds admirably in achieving this purpose for it's target audience. This work is particularly valuable as a supplement to the NFPA and API publications on the control of static electicty, providing a nicely balanced combination of theoretical background and practical example. The extensive References section is a very helpful guide to the literature. The book is well organized and very clearly written.

Highly recommended for practicing engineers who want to improve their understanding of static ignition mechanisms and who need to apply the published standards to real world situations.

There are few comprehensive books on the market on the subject of rheology Â- the complex science dealing with flow and deformation of matter Â- and these are several years old. At last there is now a book that explains the meaning of a science that many scientists need to use but only a few can fully grasp. It does so by striking the balance between oversimplification and overload of theory in a very compelling and readable manner. The authorÂ's systematic presentation enables the authors to include all components of rheology in one volume.

The first four chapters of this book discuss various aspects of theoretical rheology and, by examples of many studies, show how particular theory, model, or equation can be used in solving different problems. The main emphasis is on liquids, but solid materials are discussed in one full chapter as well.

Methods of measurement and raw data treatment are included in one large chapter which constitutes more than one quarter of the book. Eight groups of methods are discussed giving many choices for experimentation and guidance on where and how to use them properly.

The final chapter shows how to use rheological methods in different groups of products and methods of their manufacture. Usefulness of chemorheological (rheokinetical) measurements is also emphasized. This chapter continues with examples of purposeful applications in practical matters.
