Meditations upon the meaning of 'landscape'.......2001-07-17
I was attracted by the title of this book; there's so much to be learned by observing the suburban or rural landscape, which most of us drive through without really noticing or reflecting upon it. Someday a wonderful book will be written on this topic, but this is not it. Instead, John Jackson presents us with a series of 'musings,' for lack of a better word, about the vernacular landscape. At times, the writing takes on a stream-of-consciousness quality that leans too heavily toward personal reflection. Topics include the grid-road network of the US midwest, placement of county courthouses within town plans, the history of the 'box house,' evolution of the Arts & Crafts style of architecture, and the author's experiences in the US Army in Europe during WWII. Intertwined among these topics are passages in which the author reflects upon the notion of 'landscape' and what it means to him.
Intersting but a bit much........2000-04-07
This is a rather interesting book. The perspective it takes on history is unique. The basic premise is that you can learn a great deal about a society by the way they talk about and treat the land around them. I must admit, it made me look at my surroundings differently. It is a bit slow in places, and after a while I started to loose interest. However, overall I would say that this collection of essays is rather good. You should check it out if you have any interest in the field of landscape studies.
Book Description
What if there was a secret ingredient that could make every single one of your martial arts techniques better? Not only faster and more powerful, but more likely to slam home to exactly the right target every time. Maybe there is.
Timing is the art and science of ending a confrontation as quickly and efficiently as possible. In Timing for the Fighting Arts, authors Loren W. Christensen and Wim Demeere team up to teach you exactly how to get every last ounce of speed and power out of your techniques. Already strong and lightning fast? Prepare to get even better.
Whether you want to feel safer on the street or emerge victorious in the ring, this book is packed with inside information essential to defeating your opponent:
* Why many experts say timing is more important than speed
* How to put the OODA loop and Hick's law to work for you
* Why timing is both an offensive and defensive asset
* Which types of verbal distraction can give you the edge
* Why controlling your opponent's spine gives you an advantage
* Which tournament techniques really do work on the street
* How to set up multiple opponents to create timing opportunities
* Which tricks law enforcement officers rely on to buy time
* How you can improve your odds against a gun or knife
* Why timing is one of the most important things you can add to your training
Every one of these concepts is backed up by drills and practice scenarios so you can go beyond theory and put your knew knowledge to work in the ring or on the street where you need it most. If you're ready to take your skills to the next level, Loren and Wim are ready to show you the way.

Good ideas - not so good techniques.......2007-01-04
Not a bad book. it gave me lots to think about in my training.
the concepts contained in the book are excellent - some of the techniques they talk about and demonstrate (in pictures) seem a bit old school. without testing them and practicing them it is all just theory anyway.
got to practice this stuff.
Turn the autopilot off.......2006-05-01
Yes.. that's basically the main message of this book. Don't fight blindly.
The last chapter is loaded with series of drills that can sharpen your timing and fighting "instinc", while the earlier chapters are full with wonderful information to give you complete understanding of what fighting is all about, and why timing is important.
Just a word caution,
I often get lost reading those earlier chapters. The authors were very generous in providing us with details and examples that sometime we forget the main theme of the chapter we are reading (also because those details are written in very engaging and absorbing tone).
Wonderful book.
I am glad that I bought it...
A guide for intermediate to advanced martial artists.......2006-01-13
Timing in the Fighting Arts is a guide for intermediate to advanced martial artists, from boxing professionals to ordinary men and women honing their skills for self-defense. Written by two expert martial artists, both with extensive experience in police work, Timing in the Fighting Arts covers everything from Hick's Law (that reaction time increases the more choices one has - therefore it's faster and more effective to have one simple defense than a dozen complex ones) to improving one's posture to approaching a potentially dangerous person and timing a grab, to "need-to-know" information - and debunked myths - about translating sport fighting to a street situation. A wealth of recommended drills and exercises for physical self-improvement round out this valuable supplementary self-defense resource.

It's about time!.......2005-05-13
Face it, there are only so many hammers you can fit in a toolbox: they're all useless if the nail pounds you before you can pound it. Plenty of books tell you "what" and "how", this book tells you "WHEN" and if you don't have the opportunity it shows you how to make it happen NOW.
You will learn to create and exploit windows of opportunity in the real world and on the mat. It's not some woo-woo discussion of "timing" over too many cold ones. Techniques and examples are drawn from the experience of the authors BOTH outside and inside the dojo. They have found these to work for them, and you can make them work for you.
Christensen's extensive background as a cop and Demeere's background as both a bouncer (doorman) and ring competitor fit together to present a bigger picture than you might be getting from your dojo alone.
Both authors are long time students and instructors of the martial arts. If you are a dojo enthusiast who is looking for a bigger picture than the one you are getting in school, or looking for an introduction to pragmatic or "reality based self-defense", but find yourself put off by the frequent disrespect for the martial arts, then this book is a good choice for you. It covers similar ground to other books, but the authors do it without feeling the need to tell you that all your training is useless. In fact, they build on your training to help you get more out of it, and it's all done with timing in mind.
You also get pointers to further reading on topics that are covered only in brief and many cool new drills. I like the "statue" one especially, maybe you will too.

Extremely Detailed- Not a Quick Overview.......2005-09-07
I'm a graduate student and bought the book for a class at the seminary that I attend. Even as a graduate student, the books' geography is way too detailed for a quick survey of the land. But, if you are looking for a very detailed, informative Atlas, then this is the book to buy.
Clear and Accurate.......2000-01-16
This is my choice for a Bible atlas. The text and maps are clear and accurate. The map citation index and Scripture index are complete. The time line and color photos help to make this an interesting atlas. For Bible teachers, a complete set of matching overhead transparencies is available. My Bible college students have voted this their #1 choice.

Not just another Bible Atlas.......2007-10-15
At first glance I thought I would really like this book. After looking through it and reading parts of this manouth (at almost 10 lbs and 580 pages you won't be carrying this under your arms) I was wrong, I love this book!
I found myself drawn into the maps and text and excellant writings. The feel of the glossy pages and beautiful art and graphics is impressive. I found the text and history to be fair and balanced. The text is broken up into very readable sections, but take note, you will find yourself drifting from the text to the graphics in no time. It is worth the price and the time to explore and take in all this book has to offer.

Best Atlas of Bible Lands Ever Printed.......2007-02-12
My husband and I teach an indepth class on the Old Testament one semester then the New Testament the next semester alternating. We used the previous edition of this same book, but we were even more blown away by the new revised edition. Every student of the Bible needs to purchase one. They are priceles.
Fits Bible Study needs in every way! Buy It........2007-01-15
The Hammond 'Atlas of the Bible Lands' satisfies every imaginable objective I may have for an aid to Bible study. This is especially true since the book is published by people who understand people who use maps.
For starters, it includes historical maps from the very earlist period where an event in the Bible can be associated with a real historical location through the travels of Jesus' apostles, plus a map of modern Palestine.
Then, like every other serious atlas, the volume includes a wide range of maps which go beyond the familiar political boundaries. For example, it includes serious physical maps of Palestine, as well as maps of climate and economic centers.
Lastly, the volume includes a map of the entire Roman Empire (albeit with some important corners of the British Isles left off). While Christianity may not have reached Britannia or Hispania in the lifetimes of Peter, Paul, or the other early Apostles, it is certainly important to have the entire empire when reading New Testament and early Church Father writings.
The very best aspect of the volume is the modest cost for this marvelous volume. I've seen other books on this subject and none come close. I only wish there were some way of acquiring wall hanging sized blowups of some of the maps.
Book Description
This informative, best-selling atlas features diagrams, maps, and charts that provide readers with a thorough understanding of the Biblical past and present. It features a section on the geography of the Holy Land showing terrain, vegetation, and climate information. The chronologically arranged maps show important political changes, the course of empires, and the expansion of the early Christian church. There are also many color and black and white photographs of Biblical places, artifacts, and archaeological sites.

Atlas of the Bible Lands.......2005-07-23
This book has excellent and colorful maps plus descriptions of the Bible lands. The maps and information are so attractive that they inspire the reader to spend time with them. I teach a course entitled INTRODUCTION TO THE OLD TESTAMENT and this book is a required text. Reading the Old Testament is more easily understood as the locations and happenings are highlighted in this book.
Excellent Study Help.......2003-06-02
For the price this atlas out ranks the others by far. Most of the time it provides the exact map/information I need for my study. I have several others that I have picked up through seminary and later but this is the one I still turn to. It is a classic that is worth every penny.
Great Beginner Bible Atlas.......2000-06-21
The beauty of this book is its simplicity. Unlike some Bible atlases, this one does not have a great deal of text to sift through; just nice, easy-to-read maps.
There are also captioned pictures which relate to whichever map is on the page. The captions are simple and the photos are interesting.
Towards the end of the book, there are a few helpful charts, such as a Time Chart of Bible History, one on the Kings of Judah and Israel, The House of the Maccabees and Hasmoneans, as well as the family tree of the herodic dynasty.
This book would serve a new student of the Bible (or a younger student...grade school through high school) very well. It gives you a fair amount to information in a non-stifling style. It's easily well worth the affordable price.

Worthwhile.......2006-11-23
Buy this to get a feel of the land, not to reference quick information about an area. There are no specific boundaries, just regional approximations, and mimimal information about each area.
There are two kinds of maps, topography and layer-tint. I didn't find the topography map useful, but the layer -tint ones are great. They've used color to represent depth/height to a very precise level. Most maps are represented three times - Layer tint for 2 periods (different names) and topography combined.
Its all based on two maps, Holy Land South and Holy Land North and uses the same key of 20-odd place names throughout. The next section is a decreased scale of the same map, so of course its divided into an increasing quantity. Etc. The HL S and HL N maps are 1:650,000, then you go down to 1:275,000 & 1:150,000/100,000, all based on NASA information.
There are 8 panoramic photos in most sections. There's virtually no text. (Apparently thats in volume 2.) Both are very difficult to find. Sunday Software sells the first one. [...]
A cd comes with Volume 1 that you can 'fly over' the land. I wouldn't buy it separately for the topography flying. The layer tint flying is great. It also has six or eight great photos of each region (e.g. Judean Shephelah) and many of places. You can measure area, length, etc. and fly at different altitudes. There is text describing each place which is nice, since the atlas has none.
Beautiful and Helpful (but ISBNs are confusing!).......2005-01-26
This is a two-volume work with one ISBN. How confusing!
Both volumes are beautiful, but make sure you know which one you are getting.
VOLUME 1 has a white cover.
VOLUME 2 has a black cover.
Book Description
Nowhere in the world has a more tumultuous history than the Holy Land, that troubled bridge of land that links Asia, Africa and Europe. Today we are used to watching TV news reports covering the regionâs modern-day conflicts. It is scant consolation to know that equally world-shaping battles were being fought there thousands of years ago. These lands have always been a crossroads of peoples and the stage for a clash of cultures, and the region has bred more than its fair share of heroes, villains, invaders, saints and zealots. Their exploits were woven into a series of religious books chronicling the history of the region that later became known as The Bible. Whatever oneâs religious beliefs, the Bible contains a wealth of historical fact and an insight into the contemporary culture of the region. This book investigates the background of the Bible, not only re-telling the classic stories but looking at the latest archeological evidence to provide a thoroughly up-to-date account.

Don't miss this book!.......2000-02-26
If I Asked You Would You Stay was an engaging, imaginative book. Two teenagers are searching for their place in life. They stumble upon each other when he rescues her from drowning in the ocean. Its a very compassionate, yet hard felt book. The book moves at a slow pace. I highly recommend this book, even though the ending was a disappointment.
If I Asked You Would You Stay.......2000-02-26
In the novel, If I Asked You Would You Stay, there were two teens wondering and looking for their place in life. They have never met, but soon after they do, they fall in love. If I Asked You Would You Stay was a very good book. It was interesting and if I had to rate this book, I would rate it 8/10. (Ten being the highest and one being the lowest.) Although in some places it does move at a slow pace. Even though it moves at a slow pace, I recommend this book for anyone who likes to read adventure novels, but also for the people who like a little bit of romance in their novels.
It was a Great book but Slow.......1998-11-30
This book was about two teenagers that have not yet found their place in the world and have no idea where their future is headed. They are two very different people but learn to look deeper within theirselves and find caring and love for eachother. I didn't really like the ending and it was sorta slow for them to fall in love. But otherwise I recommend this book.
STALKED ALONG THE BOARDWALK!.......1998-06-03
This is a more adult-teenager story about two 17-year-olds who have run away (separately) and are trying to live on their own. One is seeking love; the other is fleeing it. The title is long, awkward and revealing. Set in a coastal resort in southern California, this book presents two lonely young people who meet when He rescues Her from the ocean. She fears pursuit from a vicious man while he cherishes a hopeless lost love.
His hideout is unusual and interesting: a hidden room above an abandoned carousel along a popular boardwalk. Can these two kids make it on their own, or even in tandem? Can he protect her from her Present? Can she help him overcome his obsession with the Past, which is not even his own? Very adult themes and situations, so this is not a book for elementary children.
Eve Bunting is a wonderful author whom I respect, for she deals with many serious social issues: --Teenage Runaways --Homeless People who live in airports --Orphan trains which transplant the unwanted children of NY city to midwestern farms --chemical poisoning of the land --responsible babysitting
