An Unbeatable Reference Source for Gems and Minerals!.......2001-04-17
This oversized "coffee table" style book, contains some of the most impressive gem and mineral photography in print. The photos were taken by Erica and Harold Van Pelt who are the most revered gemological photographers in the world. In addition, the text is well organized and flawlessly researched. Gems and Crystals really captures the magic responsible for mankind's obsession with gem minerals. I highly recommend this book to anyone with a passion for gems.
Product Description
The first comprehensive work to present both the outer and the inner wealth of 250 gemstones. Each gemstone is depicted in full color, with details of its chemical properties, sources throughout the world, healing powers, and appropriate fields of use.

Crystal coffee table book.......2007-08-29
I love the beauty of the pictures of the crystals out in natural locations. They are breath taking. The energy discriptions are short and to the point with the usual hardness and vibrational information. I greatly appreciate information regarding the misrepresentation of some stones as other more expesive or rare stone too. This book just plane feels good. There is a definate Christian spin to some of the energy discriptions.
very heartfelt..........2006-11-13
but otherwise a little lacking.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book; it really comes from the heart and has themes that differ from other book that encompass this topic. The entire book contains very encouraging, spiritual messages, and many are of a very Christianized nature, which gives it distinction from the traditional books. Nothing is inherently exclusive, so the messages presented are very open to all people of all traditions.
The weaknesses that prevent this stone from getting a five star rating really lie in the incompleteness of the work. Many very unusual stones are discussed, and all but very few have pictures to accompany them, though most of the unusual stones have very little information regarding their uses. The book does a beautiful job of including so many different gemstones, but their origins and mineralogy are totally left out of this work. Locations from which they come and the chemical formulae are found with each page, but there is insufficient data concerning any other of the scientific aspects of these stones. Some things, like relative refractive indices or easily identifiable physical properties would make identification of cut gemstones so much easier.
This book is not unlike a textbook; it is a sturdy volume meant to be treasured like its subjects. I am sure you will enjoy this one!
Great Book!.......2004-09-07
This book is awesome! It tells all about crystals and what they do. It shows a great picture, composition, hardness, color, and the source! I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves gemstones and would like to learn about the effects that they have on people!
Excellent Book!.......2000-03-20
This book contained vast amounts of information on every gem topic there is. It helped me tremendously in learning about gems. It also saved me a lot of money when I went out and purchased a ruby bracelet for my mother and diamond ring for my wife. I probably saved at least a thousand dollars just from using the knowledge obtained from this book. It is a great book and I recommend everyone buying it. It is a great investment!

Out standing.......2000-09-20
This book by Joan Randell is inspiring. I am knowledgable about gem stones, event though this is not necessary to enjoy this book. It provides a clear and inspiring understanding of how the Lord Jesuus Christ is reflected in gem stones in our everyday lives. I beleive its a glimpse into what the Kingdom of God or heaven, will be like. I imagine God wants to give us gifts, like gem stones, far above or beyond what we could think or imagine here on earth. If we think gem stones are great, God has even greater things in store for us. This book inspires one to think this way. Joan's book helped me at a critical juncture in my life when I was trying to decide whether or not to pursue the jewelry industry as a career. I can honestly say it provided answers and guided my thinking as I made the step into the world of gem stones. God is represented in all fascets of nature including the beauty of gems. Joan's book brings out the richness of this fact and makes one realize how great is the God to whom we pray.

Excellent reference book.......2001-02-08
I got this book a few years ago at a used book store and I still consider it my best reference book for minerals. I have a B.S. degree in Geoscience and used the book for a mineralogy course I was taking, many of the Geology students were impressed with the content of the book.
I especially like the inclusion of the Crystalography section. The book was orginally published in 1964, then again in 1967, so its pre-moonlanding, but does include a small section on Meteorites.
Mine is old and needs to be rebound, which I plan to do since the book is no longer published. Find this book!

A field trip of historic mineral sites of Earth.......1997-12-02
This is a big book, 9" by 11" by 1" thick in hardcover, of 488 glossy pages with both a general index and a mineral index.
This is a pictorial and textual "field trip" book of history and historical mining sites from all over the Earth. This features 100 of the world's classic crystals producing localities. Each site is accompanied by a text containing historical lore, and by multitudes ofold and new b&w photos, 667 of them, accompanied by many color photographs of crystal and gem treasures, each in its proper site.
A map in the back shows where the sites are, and a bibliography referring to each site, or chapter, with usually 2 references to each.
For the enthusiast of mineral history this work is just about invaluable. -DM

A controversial book it seems.......2007-07-25
An all round excellent book I found. I don't think it's old fashioned to belive martial arts are about personal growth and improvment more than beating the other guy, but some of the criticisms are valid. I enjoyed being trained, for a long time quite unknowingly, as a classical fencer. Therefore I thoroughly enjoyed this book and agree with the author ideas. But his constant attacks on sport fencing are tiring after a while and they are the only reason I didn't rate this book five stars. I always thought of fencing as a martial art more than a sport, but I accept that this is not the case for everyone. It's personal choice. Arguing in favour of classical fencing is one thing, but to simply repeatedly dismiss sport fencers as shallow idiots is unfair and boring. Not everyone wants to dedicate their life to fencing, some just want to swing a sword around and others just want to win competitions. Leave them alone to have their fun and count their medals Nicky, we'll get on with the real fencing quite fine without them!
This is Fencing.......2006-08-10
First of all, I find it important that the person writting
this book really knows fencing, because all his advises and
tips are from someone who has done fencing to a high level
(better for us)and is also a coach. What more do you want.
Excellent tips, excellent book
Not What the Title Says It Is.......2006-06-16
I've been sport fencing for over 25 years and picked up this book as a refresher on strategy. The title and introduction led me to believe that was the type of book that I would read. I was disappointed to find that nearly the entire book is a diatribe against sport fencing in favor of the classical fencing movement. Chapter after chapter stated in one way or another the basic idea of the book: "Modern sport fencing is garbage. Classical fencing is 'real' fencing."
I might have overlooked the author's diatribe, except that he really didn't have much else to say on the subject unless it was couched in his absolute refusal to acknowledge the validity of modern sport fencing.
I gave this book two stars because, within the incessant voice of the author's main point, he managed to slip in some words of advice that have slightly improved my performance on the fencing strip. This advice, however, was only useful since I could connect years of fencing experience with some of the hidden gems within the book.
If you are a die hard classical fencer, read the book as vindication of your choice of fencing. Sport fencers need not bother.
"REAL fencers"??! Oh dear........2006-05-04
Nick Evangelista has produced a book that is quite removed from most aspects of modern fencing. He has very strong views concerning how fencing 'should' be and seems rather irritated that they're not. As a result his work seems to at every opportunity take the form of a personal rant against modern styles of fencing. In fact 'The Inner Game' seems so full of personal vendettas and anecdotes to support them, that it's a wonder actual fencing tactics get a mention at all!
I suggest this book is unsuitable for those practicing the modern sport of fencing and would suggest works by authors such as Prof. John 'Jes' Smith as a preferable source.
It does concern me that those new to the sport could become extremely disillusioned by this work.
That being said he does make some useful comments concerning general approaches to training, placing a lot of emphasis on self discipline and correct practice.
In addition, all this talk of 'Real fencers' is at best a demonstration of the writer's ignorance. Nick may be a good teacher of classical fencing, however i believe 'The Inner Game' is poorly written and would not even recommend it to those who do wish to practice the classical style.
A Guide to REAL fencing.......2005-11-12
Another AWESOME book by famous fencing artist Nick Evangelista. This is a book made for REAL fencers and not the olympic woosy type. The book also explains grips, moves, etc. A MUST READ for any begginer or REAL fencer.
Customer Reviews:
Out of date.......2007-09-09
This book should be updated or taken off the market. All examples are way out of date - from technology to marketing to today's audience. Very little value. Ironically the aurhors encourage you to keep current and they are over a decade behind. A fluff piece that promotes their speaker's bureau.
Abundant Options to Profit at the Podium.......2007-04-02
Anyone who's ready to share their expertise on the plateform in small and large settings will find a wealth of resources in this book.
If you're just getting started, Speak and Grow Rich will overwhelm you with revenue opportunities. What I suggest, as a veteran speaker, is that you have pad and paper by your side to list the numerous products you can realistically create to start your speaking career and boost sales.
Every product mentioned in the book won't be beneficial for you, but the ones that link you with your audience will create untold revenue.
I found myself skimming some of the chapters, and that's only because I've been speaking for more than 10 years, so I know and practice much of what the authors suggest. However, I poured over the details in chapters 3 and 9.
The information on learning to craft contracts so that you make money from recordings and don't give away this intellectual property is priceless whether you're just starting or a long-time speaker. This tutorial was eloquently explained and not to be overlooked.
Speak and Grow Rich will help you to trade in your stage fright for bountiful checks you can bank on.
Blah, blah, blah!.......2006-08-25
I'm sure Walters is on to something, but I'm having trouble squaring the idea of my wife's constant chatter with this nagging sense that I'm the poorer for it.
I bought it twice ..........2006-06-06
... but the second time was in error!
As a professional speaker and consultant I am always on the lookout for ways to gather material to help my clients improve themselves (corporate and individuals).
To do this, I need to keep my presentation skills well honed. This book, although to some it may seem like "teaching grandma to suck eggs", it does contain many nuggets of invaluable information for speakers of various levels.
Also, I don't necessarily use all the suggestions and advice given however, the information is particularly good if you're just starting out our are a mid-level speaker.
Remember to have fun as you seek to be all you can be!
PS: I bought the book twice in error and could've returned one but decided to hang on to it!
