As a training Lactation Cunsultant in a local hospital in Israel, I have been working with breastfeeding women for over two years. Often, differences in opinion between the Nursing Staff and Lactation Consultants surface. I found this book to help promote one uniformed goal; the breastfeeding mother. With all of Ms Biancuzzo's up-to-date research and information, and with the book's easy to read format, this book is a welcomed addition to my library.

If there is one flaw that I see in this book, it's that I can't find a way to integrate every game in this book. I love games and I love this book!
The activities in this book are suited for every education level, from an introduction to breastfeeding in a CBE series to a lactation counsellor program. There are ice-breakers, games to explore breastfeeding biases, and games to help you learn the chemistry, biology and physiology of breastfeeding.
The best thing of all - this book is timeless. While some information may require updating over time, the games will hold their own. If you teach breastfeeding in any capacity, you'll find this book helpful.
Great resource for giving presentations about breastfeeding.......2003-01-16
In the "Coach's Notebook: Games and Strategies for Lactation Education", Linda J. Smith has gathered games and advice for presenting breastfeeding classes. This is a source of inspiration and an aid for breastfeeding instructors. This book is a tool to use to help design and deliver professional-style presentations that are spiced up with games and activities in lieu of a straightforward lecture.
Smith feels that using games and activities adds an element of fun to the learning experience, increases the learners' attention span, and aids with the retention of the presented information. Smith has combined auditory, kinesthetic, and visual elements to appeal to the three different learning modalities.
Chapter one contains basic presentation skills combined with Smith's tips based on her many years of experience as an instructor and as a Lactation Consultant. Smith covers the structure, flow, and appropriate timing of each component of the presentation. (This information is pretty standard. If you already have read or learned the components of presentation skills this will be repetitious for you. If you have no training in presentation skills, this is useful information for you.) Discussion about the use of breastfeeding props, and the pro's and con's of using audio-visual equipment are included.
The challenge of deciding what to present is acknowledged as a common stumbling block. With all we know about breastfeeding, it can be hard to decide how to limit content to fit within a certain time frame. Smith provides good tips about how to pare down everything we want to present.
In Chapter Two, Smith provides five icebreaker activities to choose from. Later chapters contain six games for use with the general public and fourteen games for presenting specific topics or concepts in depth (such as to health care professionals or lay breastfeeding counselors who already know about breastfeeding). The last chapter contains ten games for any audience that contains "neat and nifty ideas from master teachers from around the world" which "convey the uniqueness of BF in creative and effective ways".
All of the games and activities in the book are well organized and easy to understand. Key information is easily scanned on the first page: the goal, the best audience for the game, the amount of time required to play, and how to play. Details such as trivia facts with source citations are included. Almost every game is complete and requires no research on the part of the presenter. However, thought must go into the planning of the presentation and some prep work with game pieces, game cards, etc. may need to be prepared ahead of time. Smith also recommends a practice run-through before the actual presentation.
Some examples of the activities are: learning the composition of breastmilk, really hearing what a mother is trying to communicate with sample statements, figuring out if a medication is compatible with breastfeeding, and how to evaluate research studies about breastfeeding. Games for the general public include a handful related to emotions such as exploring negative feeling related to feeding choices or past guilt about not breastfeeding. There is a breastfeeding trivia game complete with questions and answers. For games where the attendees discuss opinions or emotions, Smith includes the typical answers and details to elaborate on them. The games are categorized into trivia type games, multiple choice questions, and fill in the blank questions. Some games require the players to use breastfeeding references to look up answers and come to conclusions.
This book can save loads of prep time by giving all that is needed to play these creative and informative teaching games. Smith's years of experience in the field of lactation are obvious.
The only complaint one may have is that for the price, the reader may have wished for more presentations for different audiences. Meaning if you only want presentations for the general public you may wish there were more or if you only want presentations for breastfeeding counselors you may wish there were more. What is here is of high quality and very detailed, and still will save you loads of prep time.

"Feeding Mars" is a collection of scholarly essays on the theme of historical logistics. The essays, however, are sometimes very specialized and cover an enormous scope of time, which means, basically, that not all of them are interesting to everybody. The book is interesting, however, in that it tries to offer a counterpoint to Creveld's "Supplying War", qualifying its sometimes sweeping arguments. If you are interested in military logistics, its acquisition is certainly necessary.

Description:
Root-feeding nematodes may play an important role in generating spatial and temporal variation in natural plant communities, but little is known about the performance of the nematodes in the plant root zone. We studied the emergence, survival and reproductive success of the cyst nematode Heterodera arenaria, a root feeding-specialist that occurs in mobile dunes. The host plants of H. arenaria are buried regularly by windblown sand to which the plants respond by upward clonal expansion. As a consequence, the nematodes have to migrate upwards in the soil profile to find new roots for feeding and reproduction, however, not all juveniles migrate. We tested the hypothesis that the offspring from migrated individuals would perform better than from individuals that remained behind and discuss the advantage of this dualistic behavior. The individual performance of the cyst nematodes was better when their juveniles migrated to the new root layer. In the field, in the new root layer the cysts had more eggs and juveniles than cysts collected from the 1-year-old root layer. Under controlled conditions, cysts from the new root layer released their first juveniles faster than cysts from the 1-year-old root layer. However, the juveniles that do not migrate might be crucial for the persistence of the population. In the past decade in two extremely dry years, we could not find cysts in the new root layer. Apparently, summer drought constrains cyst formation, so that the cysts produced in the older root layers serve as a reservoir for the population. Such reservoirs could become more important when climate change will result in increased incidence of summer droughts.

Don't leave home without it.......2003-10-10
The best, simply the BEST, most comprhensive guide to camping and fishing a place that I have EVER seen. I would never go down there without having read this book. The camping info is 100% accurate, and the fishing tips are not bad either. I have found exactly the species of fish in certain areas as indicated on their maps numerous times. The fishing calendars are not too bad, but I would not rely on them 100%- there is a lot we don't know about how the fishes of the Sea of Cortez move up and down the coast. As the authors state in their book, if you go where they say, do what they do, and fish with what they suggest, there is absolutely NO WAY you won't catch fish every day you are down there. This is an absolute must for people wanting to camp on the beach and fish near shore. If you are not into fishing, or prefer to fish offshore for billfish etc., then as the authors are quick to say, you are better off with a different product.
This is truly the final word on Baja fishing from a small boat. Period. You are stupid if you go down there without having read this first. Period.
Very disappointing! :(.......2000-03-16
I bought this book hoping to get some insights for my up coming trip to the Cabo/Baja area. I was very disappointed. The book is FAR MORE a campers guide than a fishing guide. Inspite of being a 3rd edition the pictures look VERY OLD! And judging by the tackle, lures, boats and vehicles in the pics they all seem to have been taken in the 70's. As to fishing info, very general at best. Very little on specific tackle, riggings etc. And the "best times to fish" calendars conflict completely with just about all other guides (at least for the areas I was interested in). If you plan to trailer a camper or camp out it seems to have a lot of info on camp sites. But if you're looking for a Baja fishing guide, save your money.
Don't buy this book - save Baja for the rest of us!.......1999-04-22
This book is hands down the best book on fishing and on Baja I have ever found, and I have looked long and hard. Color pictures would be nice for the 4th addition, but they are by no means necessary.

This book saved me $$$$ on 1st fishing trip to Baja. Above that, it saved me much frustration and lent tremendously to the overall success of the trip. Have recommended it to many people headed for the beaches of Baja.
I have engineered, designed and built my own Baja trailer and would like to share this with the authors for any upcoming editions of this "Bible".
Also, I would like to see a review of the Porte Boat mentioned with the tin and inflatable boats. I have used this boat in Baja, Northwest mountain lakes, Puget Sound and Southeast Alaska (both freshwater and saltwater shoals). Please contact me for futher comments.

Well organized, concise and well explained. Everything is taught in the context of conversational usage so it's easier to remember rather than just memorizing vocab and grammar by rote. Highly recommend.
The CDs are useful for hearing pronunciation but that's it... They are pretty short.
Great adjunct to Russian lessons.......2007-08-28
What I like about this book/CD set is that I can follow along in the book as I listen to the dialogue on the CDs. AND, they speak slowly enough that you can hear the words and repeat them (unlike some CDs or computer applications where native speakers are rattling tongue-twisting words off at the speed of light...). I am using this as I finish up a 10-week adult school class taught by a native Russian. This will help me get to where I want to be communicating in Russian.

Five years ago, I began learning Russian with TEACH YOURSELF RUSSIAN. Though it was only through a combination of textbooks that I reached the point that I speak Russian, if not perfectly, at least comfortably most of the day every day, I think Daphne West's textbook was a good choice for my first exposure to the language. I should note that my copy of the book is the 1995 edition. I don't know how much has changed in successive editions--I should hope at least the annoying plethora of typos in my edition has been corrected--but so many recent Teach Yourself publications contain the same information as in the past with just some new formatting and more timely financial and political information.
TEACH YOURSELF RUSSIAN begins with the alphabet. I found Cyrillic fairly easy, but those who end up struggling with it can obtain Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script as well. The meat of the book is a series of chapters containing a dialogue (mainly a story about the usual English tourist, here one Anna Prince) with following vocabularly, new grammatical points, and exercises. There is often a reading passage dealing with some aspect of Russian culture or history. While the grammar can be pretty heady for those who have no prior experience with foreign languages, I admire how the amount of new vocabulary and idiom in each chapter is kept manageable, unlike the avalanche found in each lesson of the mid-1990s Routledge's Colloquial Russian. At the end there's an appendix with Russian accidence, which is nicely substantial for a Teach Yourself book. I cannot comment much on the cassettes, as I've always been surrounded by native speakers of Russian who read the dialogues for me.
While this is a pretty good main textbook, it does not stand alone. In my experience inflecting languages require much more drill than isolating or agglutinating languages, but the exercises on Russian morphology in each chapter are few and not terribly rigorous. I'd recommend supplementing TEACH YOURSELF RUSSIAN with Basic Russian: A Grammar and Workbook by John Murray and Sarah Smyth (London: Routledge, 1999) which has plenty of fulfilling practice. I'd also recommend getting a picture dictionary, such as the Osborne one or similar, which makes learning new vocabulary of everyday items enjoyable. And, as with every self-taught textbook, the glossary at the end of the book is worthless and the reader must get a proper dictionary. The Oxford one is a popular desk reference, but I've always carried around Random House Webster's Pocket Russian Dictionary and been happy enough with it.
But if you want to get started on Russian, get Daphne West's textbook, supplement it with other materials, and don't forget to get plenty of conversational practice with native speakers, ideally a couple of hours a day.

Not for the average learner..........2007-07-16
This course (Teach Yourself Ukrainian) is not a good buy for the average learner. It begins by trying to teach the cyrillic alphabet first, then introduces conversations, which are presented in writing as well as on the discs. The conversations are not broken down well, so they are difficult to learn.
How do we learn to speak as a child? We learn basic words, then how to combine words, then (much later) how to spell and write.
I would recommend finding a program that takes the above approach, not the one offered in this course.

I wouldn't suggest this if this is your first stab at any sort of russian block language. It's not exactly user friendly unless you have a teacher handy.This would be good if finding yourself further down the road in the language itself. But to become comfortable with the language first would help and this is a bit daunting.

- Hard for me to follow at the beginning and that's where I've stayed with my progress in this course. It immediately jumps into words and phrases without spending much time on basic linguistics like sounds, alphabet, word construction, logic and thought process. Logic and thought process are very important in understanding any language.
I contacted Rosetta Stone and they unfortunately have no current plans to teach this language.
Teach Yourself Ukranian Compete Course(Book + CD).......2005-10-14
Excellent series for learning languages. The books are small enough so that you can take it anywhere with you. The CD helps you to be able to understand the spoken language. I love it. You can learn at your own pace!I use the book and CD at home, on my computer to "see" the words that I am speaking; then I use the CD in the car when I am driving, to see how much I can understand.

The one point i took off is for lacking gradual switch to Ukrainian as the reader gains knowledge of the language.
It'd've been great practice and more of an immersion in the Ukrainian language.
This is indeed a very simple book, but it sure can allow itself to be one, since it's the ONLY BOOK on the market (more or less).
Ukrainian is the first slavic language and though had long existed in the doldrums of occupation, the trend in Ukraine is strengthening it as a national language and it seems like it's heading to be the 6th most widely spoken native tongue in Europe after Russian, German, English, French and Italian.
*note that it is practically useless for those with prior knowledge of other slavic languages. It is oriented at English-speakers.

Great for people going to Russia, not a student's guide..........1999-05-29
This guide is quite comprehensive. It starts off with the things you will need to know when you first go to Russia, like the alphabet, dealing with customs officials, meeting people and asking for directions, before moving on to other areas. Quite logical, and includes grammatical notes and various common coloquial expressions. Not so much for people studying in other courses as travellers who want to learn the langugae at their own pace while in a Russian-speaking country. But you really need the tape!
The best book in English to learn Russian.......1997-12-30
When I bought this book I didn't even know the alphabet, to-day I am a fluent Russian speaker, and I owe it all to this book! If you want to learn Russian on your own, this book is the one you need to do it. It really can be done!

I got this book for christmas... there is a lot of nice picture like the enzo and maserati mc12... also the lambo miura...and lots of old car which i don't care....however this book is about italian car design... and to tell the truth it is not much... just think of the old 1950's F1 cars... and most of the old car design looks like the new Ferrari 612, very boring... and some pictures of supercars.... must be mid engine of course...it is better if you just watch top gear than buying this book... the information is not really deep... even a car mag would have better information... but the picture is really really nice... the problem is how the car is describe.. read this book like you are reading a history book... i won't buy anymore book like this book.. well... except for books about Ferrari cars...

Pale images........2005-02-05
I bought the Auto Legends book because of very good references about the photographer Michael Zumbrunn. However, when I received the book, I was very disappointed. I have expected to see very nice publication with sharp and bright images of the unique cars. Instead, the photographs were pale and colorless. I am not sure, if the authors did that in purpose, trying to imitate old pastel-colored photography's from 40s, 50s. May be it is just bad prints?
The text by Robert Cumberford is very interesting and informative. The photographs of the cars are professional and impressive. However, this book is not at all comparable with the fantastic publications of Michael Furman's 2 books; Motorcars of the Classic Era and Automobiles of the Chrome Age, with extraordinary sharp and surrealistic photographs of the unique cars.
Printed and bounded in China, the book has waived pages and bad bound.
