The Brazilian Amazon region holds a very special place in the minds of the world's nature lovers as a vast wilderness of tropical forest splendor; and southern Brazil's Pantanal area, an immense wetland, has a well-deserved reputation for its tremendous wildlife-viewing opportunities. Ecotravellers to these regions want to experience tropical forests and other stunning habitats and catch glimpses of exotic wildlife: toucans and parrots, monkeys and anteaters, frogs and toads, crocodiles and snakes. In this book is all the information you need to find, identify, and learn about Brazil's magnificent animal and plant life.
--Identification and location information on the most frequently seen animals.
--Full-color illustrations of more than 500 of Brazil's most common insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, and fish-the species you are most likely to see.
--Up-to-date information on the ecology, behavior, and conservation of the animals.
--Information on Brazil's habitats and on the most common plants you will encounter.
--Brief descriptions of the most frequently visited parks and reserves in the Amazon and Pantanal regions.
Easy-to-carry, entertainingly written, beautifully illustrated - you will want to have this book as constant companion on your journey.
Customer Reviews:
Not a field guide, but a good read.......2006-07-04
My wife bought this book for me for our recent trip to Brazil, including the Pantanal and southern Amazon. The book is excellent on some points, and severely lacking on others.
Since this book covers the gamut from insects to birds to reptiles to amphibians to mammals, I knew right from the start that it would have a very limited usefullness in terms of identifying individual species that we were seeing, and I was right. I was travelling with a couple of friends who are wildlife biologists. They too had the book. We all stopped carrying the book when we were out because it wasn't worth the weight in our packs. There are simply far too many species left out of this book for it to be useful as a field guide. With so many species, many of which look quite a bit alike, you will very rarely be certain that the animal you just saw is exactly the one in the book. For those who find it important to know exactly what you just saw, this book is not for you. If you can find it, Aves Brasiliera (All the Birds of Brazil) is a much better choice, IF you can find it. Our guide at the All the Birds of Brazil book, and it was far better, though obviously only covered a narrower topic than this book.
Now for the good. Before the trip, I read this book cover to cover, which is very unusual for me for "field guides". I found the book to be very well written, with good (though sometimes rather general, as I would expect) information about the ecology of the two regions, as well as general information about the species covered. Since Brazil contains many species that are vastly different than what I normally see in North America, I found the guide to be an excellent introduction for my trip, and though I only used it to identify individual species several times, I found that my detailed reading of it before the trip often useful in at least narrowing a bird down to type. So I could look at something and say, "Oh, that's a manakin of some kind." Beyond that, I relied on our EXCELLENT guide and his extensive knowledge or his birds of Brazil book.
To illustrate the above, this book contains (by quick count) plates and descriptions for 187 birds. During the nearly three weeks I was there, I saw 257 different species of birds, and I didn't see, and there are a lot of birds in the book that I didn't see. It's easy to do the math and figure out that the book is not good for (nor is it designed for) identification, per se.
So my recommendation: If you traveling to Brazil and don't already know a huge amount about the region, buy this book, read it before you go, maybe even take it with you as an evening reference, but for identifying individual species, you're better off using the knowledge of an experienced guide.
Oh, one other minor gripe. Despite the generally very high quality of the physical book itself, the humidity in Brazil appears to have accelerated the deterioration of the book. One would think that for a book designed to be taken to a wet climate, more care would have gone into making it withstand that climate. Maybe I just got a bad copy though.
So despite the short-comings of the book, which are largely by design, I give this book 4 stars. It is well done.
Brazil-Amazon.......2003-02-23
This book attempts to cover the whole gamut of wildlife for the Amazon basin and Pananal. It can't do it; no book can. It did make an admirable attempt and as such is a great book for the tourist traveling to the area. On a recent trip north of Manaus, it covered 98% of the bird life. It is concise enough that the occaisional bird wathcer will be able to identify most birds. It is not quite as adequate for other species- fish are very superficial, as are reptiles. I would like to see these expanded. This is a terrific guide for the tourist- concise, adequately complete, and easy to use.
good reference for specific ecosystems.......2002-07-31
I used this book for a recent trip to Brazil's Pantanal. The book is specific to only two geographic areas: The Pantanal and the Amazon, admittedly, Brazil's biggest natural draws. However, since the Pantanal and the Atlantic rainforest were my destinations, the book's usefulness was only partially utilized. Also, it is a heavy volume, and when considered with the other guidebooks I packed and used for cross-referencing, this book was by far the heftiest.
The book does fill a unique niche, that of ecology and natural history guide to these two unique wild places. No other book that is easily carried provides as much enjoyable natural history reading on the Amazon and Pantanal. The illustration plates are uniformly excellent, but it is not noted whether species occur outside of the Pantanal and Amazon. Many species do occur outside, as I quickly found out. Eliminating the rest of Brazil all together just seems a bit restricting. An average traveller to Brazil is most likely to make a stop in Rio de Janeiro, perhaps visit the easily accessible Parque National de Tijuca, and wonder if what they're seeing is that similar looking bird in their book.
Brazil is a big country, and no guidebook has yet to cover all its flora and fauna in one volume, in English, and travel-sized. This guidebook attempts to cover at least the animals and birds of Brazil's largest natural treasures, and succeeds for the most part. Given its quality of illustrations and plates, written descriptions of behavior, ecology and geography, this book is a good when used in conjunction with other bird and mammal guides.

Amazing read!.......1999-12-26
Few books have ever excited me as much as this one. My copy has a sticker that says it won Best Guidebook of the Year and this book deserves it. The author has obviously traveled herself through the Amazon and she gives a lot of "up close" tips. But what makes the book so special are also the articles written by other people--scientists and shamans who work with tribal people. The chapter by Dr. Meyer who had a shamanisticc experience with an Indian tribe and fire ants is just incredible! I wasn't even planning to go to the Amazon when I visited Brazil but somehow this book ended up in my hands and changed my life. Whether you are going to the Amazon or just want to read about it,get this book. I loved it!
the best of what is around, but be careful.......1999-01-15
Not many books are available about Amazonia, and indeed this is a very useful one when trying to find information on excursions, guides, food, health... but some remarks on the cities and their inhabitants are quite superficial. The way people live in cities such as Manaus or Belém should make us think of more than what colorful the marketplaces are, if we intend to understand a bit of what's happening in the Amazon, and in Latin America. The inclusion of detailed maps of the cities and some budget hotels could greatly improve this book.
Excellent!.......1997-10-05
Excellent! Absolutely indispensable for the Amazon traveler - not only is it packed with useful info, but Bloom clearly understands the local cultures in a way that few travel writers do. Highly recommended-

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, especially for those who have been fly fishing and have struggled with some of the techniques.......2007-10-10
I have fished the Bighorn a number of times with a great guide and found this excellent for not only learning new techniques but also for preparation for future trips.
this book sucks!.......2007-10-04
the diagrams are terrible. i challange ANYBODY who has never tied a fishing knot before to decipher a single one of the diagrams in this book. the pictures in the section on casting are even worse. UGH! i can't believe i listened to all of these five-star reviews. if you are a visual learner like i am, than please, listen to me when i tell you to AVOID THIS BOOK!
I am an idiot and it helped me!.......2004-10-21
This is an awesome book that covers everything one might need to know about flyfishing. I am totally green in this subject and I feel like after reading the book, I have an understanding about the basic principles of the sport. It covers everything from equipment to tying flies, from the basics of casting to detailed information about trout and bass.
One small gripe, however, is that there are a lack of pictures in this book. I am a visual learner and it would greatly help if the book had illustrations of how to fly fish a stream, where the fish hide, and so forth. I found that the Orvis guide was extremely helpful in the illustrations.
Excellent Book!!.......2004-07-15
This is an excellent book. I've read a couple others on the market and this is by far the easiest book to understand. This book cuts through all the garbage and tells you exactly what you need to know from what to buy, how to practice, how to choose a fly, and what to do once you've caught that trophy fish.
If you are going to only buy one fly-fishing guide this is by far the best choice.
Great Book - Bad Title.......2002-05-07
If you can get by the title, this is a really good book. Follow the instructions and you will catch fish. I refer back to the book all the time.
Book Description
Christopher Keane has spent 20 years in the business, learning the truths--and the tricks--of writing a selling screenplay. In How to Write a Selling Screenplay, he takes writers through the entire process, from developing a story to finding the best agent. Using an annotated version of an often-optioned screenplay of his own, and citing examples from movies ranging from Casablanca and Lethal Weapon to Sling Blade and The English Patient, he discusses how to create three-dimensional characters, find a compelling story, build an airtight plot structure, fine-tune dialogue, and much more. Keane's tips on the difference between writing for film and television, as well as his advice on dealing with Hollywood movers and shakers, make this an essential companion for people writing their first--or their fortieth--screenplay.

The Brokeback Passion of Harry Potter Kong.......2006-01-08
As Chance the Gardener says in BEING THERE, "I like to watch." As one who also likes to watch, this 'blockbuster release' time of year always makes me wonder....Could I do 'that'? Just how hard is it to do 'that.? 'That' being writing a screenplay and whatever comes after. A mystery to most of us watchers. This time I decided to seek answers to these questions. I naturally sought a book, which, for this quest, is Christopher Keane's HOW TO WRITE A SELLING SCREENPLAY.
CASABLANCA screenwriter Julius Epstein's foreword to this book closes with, 'Good luck and welcome to the terrible, wonderful world of screenwriting.' Why terrible/wonderful? By the time I finished this book, that was crystal clear. I learned that this pursuit isn't for the faint of heart or the thin-skinned. Screenwriting is demanding. It's daunting. It requires utter focus. It's frustrating. It's exciting. It's lonely. It's rewarding. There are lots of rules....There are no rules...
In this informative, engaging primer one can learn these rules and gain valuable insights into the wild and crazy film business itself. You might learn from this book that your idea is better suited for a play. Or a novel. Or a TV series. It's just as important to know what isn't a good screenplay idea as what is. Saves time! Throughout, I found that this book teaches about writing in the larger sense as well as screenwriting in particular. Chris Keane walks us through the many facets of this discipline that comprise the whole; the all-important story, character, plot, structure, dialogue, format, collaboration and re-write among them. He illuminates all of these aspects with references to specific films. And the book is peppered with personal anecdotes from the author's career. I found these to be invaluable insights. And one learns that once the screenplay is finished, the real work begins. This book will be helpful in the vital hunt for an agent, a key piece of the process puzzle.
I particularly like that this isn't an 'Ivory Tower Theory' book. Though Mr. Keane teaches this art, he also does it. And he has written novels and written for TV. As it's said today, he's been there-done that. I trust and respect this experience above all.
Whether you want to be a Chance the Gardener and 'just watch,' or you want to try actually writing a screenplay, I suggest you have Christopher Keane's book by your side. It's a helpful tool, seems to me. The more we know about the film process the better the 'watching' or 'doing' will be. This book will enhance the watching experience and make the 'doing' more manageable.
I've been trying to come up with a logline for this book....So far? 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the make believe.' Logline? Very important. See HOW TO WRITE A SELLING SCREENPLAY, Chapter 5.....
The tools you need to get started!.......2005-12-13
Chris Keane's book is absolutely powerful for the screenwriting novice, such as me. His instructional approach is easy to understand and encouraging. He explains how to begin -- how to keep motivated -- and how to pursue. His simple exercises show how to develop your story, character and structure -- then, he lets you know what to do next. Mr. Keane is a gifted writer and an excellent instructor. I highly recommend this publication for anyone wishing to achieve a screenwriting career.
Best Screenwriting book ever.......2005-12-12
As a beginning screenwriter the advice in this book can not be ignored. This book will give you the confidence to write that first draft, the most important step. Addressing everything from structure and formatting to agents and Hollywood business, this book is a must have for anyone who dreams of seeing their work made into a feature film.
Not just for screenwriters.......2005-02-14
While this book does have a lot of insight on writing a screenplay (especially the first screenplay), there are a lot of thoughtful points about aspects of writing like story, character, and structure that are useful for writers in any genre. This was the book my playwriting professor required us to read, not as playwrights but as writers. Definitely recommended.
Great on Structure and exercises.......2004-05-25
I got so much out of this book. What is also great is he gives you tons of insite on how to work on getting an agent. Plenty of examples. This and Mckee's Story are must haves!

Customer Reviews:
Extremely dissapointed.......2007-09-27
My daughter loves where is baby's belly button book so I thought she would enjoy this; but I was wrong. I am returning this book immediatley. We teach our 14 month old to speak correctly and this book promotes made up baby talk. I would highly discourage buying this book if your child is first learning to talk.
Not a good teaching tool........2007-09-06
I bought this book with the idea it will help my child develop a good vocabulary and I was sorely mistaken. I enjoy the other books in this series, so I expected this to be the same. This teaches children to say "goo-goo and ba ba".... I was very disappointed. I plan to give this book away. I have not read it to my child once. He is 21 months old and needs to learn real words, not gibberish like this.
Not as nice as some of her other books.......2007-08-27
Some of the "baby says" are not realistic. Who's hungry baby says "ba-ba"? I guess my son didn't drink from a bottle long enough, but he always refers to food as "yum-yum". Also, some of the flaps cover the whole page and are very difficult to lift.
I love these books!.......2007-08-04
My 5 month old son loves this book along with the other books I have by Karen Katz. It keeps his attention and is fun.
Ok book.......2007-08-04
My son loves the lift-the-flap books, and the book itself is cute. The words in the book feature "gaga" and "googoo", so I didn't really like reading this to my son, as I was trying to teach him real words.

Book Description
When young readers join this spirited romp with a menagerie of very vocal animals, they’ll discover not only what the hippopotamus says but also what yaks, kangaroos, giraffes, and caribou say.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book for little ones.......2000-03-20
I have a two and a half year old daughter who reads this book along with me (with all the appropriate roars, honks, hisses etc) at least twice every night since I've bought the book. The storyline is simple with bright illustration and very engaging. It would appeal to any little one as they are usually fascinated with animals and love to mimic all the different sounds. I highly recommend this book to parents of young children.
A most excellent book!.......1999-10-29
We borrowed this book from the library and have had to renew it so many times we have lost count. My son, who is now 21 months old, loves to read it, and can tell you what all of the animal noises' are, so we enjoy many hours of reading it together. I expect my 4 month old daughter to enjoy it just as much when she is old enough.
