Anyone who kayaks--or would like to--will get a laugh out of Kayak: The Animated Manual of Intermediate and Advanced Whitewater Technique. Author William Nealy draws on his 12 years of whitewater experience to combine instruction and kayaking philosophies with his offbeat sense of humor. Through animated diagrams, Nealy explains intermediate paddling techniques, different types of Eskimo rolls, river rescue, and running a river at flood stage. The chapter on hydrotypography ("the art of using watery features to your maximum advantage") provides an excellent tutorial on river dynamics. The book's animated style is especially useful for illustrating the dynamics of eddies, ledges, holes, and other river features. Despite the humor, safety is Nealy's primary message in Kayak.

If you paddle rivers, you want this book!.......2004-04-08

Most introductory paddling books begin with equipment and clothing, run through basic strokes and present a couple of simple moves, eddying out and peeling out, for example, with some fundamental river information thrown in at the end. The assumption is that you will learn what you need to know on the water.

This book is different. It may very well be the best introduction to flowing water on the market. Though it is supposed to be for advanced paddlers, the information and techniques it imparts are useful to boaters of all skill levels. It teaches you to approach a rapid and to figure out how it works, and what it will do to you when you get into it. Nealy's cartoons are humorous and engaging, and offer him a visual means of explaining a sport that doesn't generally translate well into print.

I generally re-read my copy a couple of times a year.

Nealy does a great job of conveying his to-the-point descriptions in terminology that even the most novice of paddler can understand. Keep in mind that this book is geared towards the paddler that has been in the water a few times, but it is still a great book if you have never even sat in a kayak. As far as a read, it is great. This is a real page turner with tons of diagrams. I had absolutly no question about what the author was trying to say. Overall, it is an excellent book and well worth the money

If you buy one book on whitewater kayaking, this is it. Very informative, lots of tips and extremely funny. All presented in a cartoon format with a unique 'time-lapse' approach.

Particularily good are the sections of whitewater river reading & scouting; various rescue techiques both for yourself & others; and big water technique.

While my Russian grammar is relatively solid, I have been noticing a lack of vocabulary knowledge. In an effort to remedy the problem, I purchased this dictionary. Needless to say, it has done wonders for my Russian vocabulary.

I work in a restaurant as a server, and I carry this dictionary around (usually in my pocket, it fits nicely) and basically just look up any word, item, phrase, etc. that pops into my head. For example, tonight I saw someone wearing a yellow shirt, so I looked up the words "yellow" and "shirt".

In addition to vocabulary help, it has some VERY useful and very comprehensive grammar tables in the back, listing all of the major case endings and verb conjugations. These tables go a long way in helping you form phrases and complete sentences with the words you look up.

Physically the dictionary seems very sturdy. I've been using it for several weeks now and the binding is holding firm. The cover is also made of a nice plastic material. This has obviously come in handy since I work in a restaurant. I've spilled sauce on it, dropped it on a wet, dirty kitchen floor, and abused it in many other ways, and it always comes out clean-as-a-whistle.

The dictionary doesn't have every word, and in some cases it lists two words without adequate explanation about which to use in which instance. But this has to be expected in a pocket dictionary. My recommendation is to use this on the go, and keep a heavy-duty, full dictionary at home so you can clarify any questions regarding word usage.

For anyone trying to master Russian I highly recommend this dictionary. Use it well and often and you will quickly multiply your vocabulary and even increase your grammar knowledge.

I bought this dictionary right before my first Russian course, and I was impressed by it's cool/durable cover, small size, etc. but not impressed with its content. Although the interface and layout make words very easy to find, my problem is that it's not easy to find out if something is an adjective, pronoun, noun, etc. So, it gets a "D" in the grammar department, but I would suggest it as a quick reference for going on a trip or something of that nature. Other than that, I would go with the Oxford version if you really want to learn the language and have the words "defined."

I'm entering my third year of Russian study, and I am becoming frustrated with this dictionary. It is the only one I used the first two years, and it served me well during that time. The small size is convenient, and the grammar tables in the back have been invaluable. However, I have found (especially in the English to Russian section) many inaccuracies, and the Russian to English section lacks many words that are necessary--even fairly basic ones. If you want a good jumping-off point, this will suffice, but pretty soon you would be better off buying a reference grammar and a more complete dictionary.

This dictionary consists of two sections: The English-Russian part and the Russian-English part. Whereas the Russian-English section is geared towards American English, the English-Russian one is definitely British (with a Soviet flavor). The reason for this is the fact that the two sections are compiled by two different authors who may even not have met. The English-Russian section is taken from the Romanov's pocket dictionary (a Russian author who did his best, but living behind the iron curtain, obviously didn't have enough exposure to the living English language -- be it British or American. The Russian-English section is pretty good for a dictionary of this size. I specifically liked it because it is based on American English.

This dictionary is liked by so many people because it has so many neat things (English speakers find the grammar clues very helpful even though they are so concise). The definitions of the English words are coded with special characters to indicate what area of special interest they refer to (such as medicine, military, chemistry, etc.) So, the idea behind this dictionary is great. The unfortunate thing about this dictionary is its English-Russian section when it comes to the Russian equivalents of English words. They are often not accurate enough and sometimes plain wrong. They get especially bad when it comes to subtleties like the difference between glimmer, glitter, gleam, glow, glisten, glint, etc. Mr. Romanov uses the same Russian words to define almost all of the above English words, which makes it impossible to find the correct equivalent. This is true for so many words in this dictionary that it renders it almost useless for both English and Russian speakers when they achieve the upper intermediate level, and the correct usage of words becomes crucial to their language study.

Another problem this dictionary has is the inability to find in the Russian-English section every Russian word used as a definition in the English-Russian section, and vice versa. This feature is called "mirroring" and is a sign of a good bilingual dictionary. Since this dictionary consists of two independent sections, they do not mirror each other at all. Therefore, when one needs to clarify the definition by performing the reverse lookup, this dictionary often fails.

The positives of this dictionary is the stress marks and grammar clues given for English speakers in a concise and effective way as well as the flexi-cover that protects the dictionary better than regular paperback. Unfortunately, the binding is not heavy duty, and pages start coming loose after moderate use. (It happened to me, but it may have been a defective copy).

Summary: This dictionary used to be the only choice for those going on a travel to Russia and needing a Russian-English-Russian pocket dictionary featuring Russian pronunciation and grammar. Langenscheidt came up with a new edition of a pocket Russian-English-Russian dictionary in 2001(ISBN: 1585730580, the cover says "New"), which seems to have gotten rid of the Romanov's section. Hopefully, the new edition is better than this one.

For those living in North America and wishing to study Russian as well as for Russians who want to learn American English, I would recommend Kenneth Katzner's English-Russian Russian-English dictionary (ISBN: 0471017078) along with a good grammar book. (For Russians I would also recommend a Longman Dictionary of American English -- pocket or full size -- for American pronunciation and simple definitions in English). This combination may be too bulky for traveling, but it provides better knowledge base for serious language study.

Have you ever wondered what the inside of your body Really looks like, but were never satisifed with the kinds of pictures you find in a text book? This book is what you've been looking for. Highly recommened to anyone with an interest in the human body. The book also contains a lot of information on how the body works and how its 'engineered' but all that takes a back seat to the amazing pictures.

You have to see this book to believe it! I stumbled across a copy in our local bookstore the other day and just couldn't believe the incredible photos and anatomical images in this work of art. Actual photos of men and women with their inner anatomy superimposed like a 3D x-ray over the photo. The poses are not your standard DaVinci's Man kind of pose either---we're talking yoga, dance, etc. If you're familiar with Alex Grey's artwork, this is just like that only with photographs. Highly recommended to medical professionals, curious laypersons, practitioners of yoga and fans of Alex Grey.
